The best thing about this restaurant is the beautiful decor and facility. We ate here yesterday for Fathers Day and the food was mixed: The appetizer was small biscuits and this was outstanding. By far the best thing of the day. The drinks were a Mimosa and Bloody Mary. The Mimosa was good but the Bloody Mary was terrible and tasted like very cheap vodka was used. The entree was a pork BLT and Hamburger Breakfast Sandwich. The BLT was good but the Hamburger was greatly undercooked I live a couple of blocks from this place but won't be back. The food is just not that good...many other better places read more

We had reservations at 12:30. We arrived at 12:28 and by the time the server approached the table it was 12:40. At that time he told us the kitchen closes at 1pm so if we wanted food, we had to order at that time. Food was good not great. Avocado toast had a small spread of avocado on less than half the toast. Egg on burger over cooked and waffle was flavorless. Amount of food was good and traditional breakfast looked great. At 1:20, we cashed out with the server and about 10 minutes later with plates still on the table, they turned off the lights. Not some of the lights....ALL THE LIGHTS! I walked to the kitchen and hollered but no one was there. They literally left us in the dark restaurant with what appeared to be by ourselves. We walked out the front door (push bar so it locked when you left) and as we walked by we caught the bartender sound asleep on the coach in the lounge area. Why take reservations if they can't serve us that late? Why not say you need to leave instead of turning the lights out and abandoning us? Unreal! read more

This meal was like all the bad Nicolas Cage movies. After it's over you wish you had never watched it. What a disaster this meal was. How can we stop the production of Nicholas Cage food? Demand better. The Yard is a farm to table, open areas concept, exposed walls, with a bar wall separating two dining areas. This makes you guess, " are we a bar or a restaurant?" This establishment, I believe would be considered fine dining. Not so fast. The staff is not ready. After being seated for 5 minutes I finally had to stop someone, who turns out is my waiter(Barney Fife). I ordered the bison carpaccio. My waiter came back 7 minutes later to confirm and put my order in. The carpaccio came. The whipped goat cheese added a beautiful creaminess along with some tart finish. There were pickled apple and fennel slaw which is a standard touch. Nothing extraordinary. And the portion was so minuscule a skinny super model would have complained. Next I choose the Braised Wild Boar Osso Buco. Guess what? BARNEY took my order, ten minutes later he came back to see if I was ready to order! Ridiculous. So out comes the boar. The boar was cooked perfect but lacking in flavor. A sweet soy or wine reduction sauce could have saved it. Paired with it were sweet corn grits and broccolini. Corn grits needed salt but had good texture. Oops Barney forgot to tell me their out of broccolini so he substituted with greens beans, "Hope that's ok". After it's on the table. Green beans like everything else needed flavor. So give this place a try, ask for their best waiter(Barney), bring salt and pepper and afterwards you will feel like you watched another Cage movie. Yikes!! Lots of regrets on this one. read more

Back ground: I have moved back to Birmingham with my wife 5 months ago. I live downtown in the historic loft district. The "E" hotel and there for "The Yard" is right around the corner. I am 61 and need a different kind of place then my younger millennial friends. Let's talk about "The Yard". The Bar: Excellent with TV's, old time luxury bar feel, jazz music and friendly. The liqueur selection is average to below average but the atmosphere makes up for it. For the first time last week, I went into the bar with my wife for a very nice and rare afternoon adult beverage. Four drinks, bill before tip was $44.00. You make the call on if it is too expensive for your taste. The Restaurant: Today I went for breakfast. Atmosphere was GREAT, the staff was all over me and I was wear a ridicules Tommy Bahama Shirt with shorts. I sat in the main room with my journal and computer. My intent was to do some work and have some breakfast. Food: Coffee, excellent however no one ever offered to refill my cup. Surprising. Breakfast was Eggs Benedict. Not on an English muffin, instead on a biscuit. Food was really good but something was missing. The plate was huge but the eggs benedict were alone and lost on the plate. This presentation was disappointing. The server brought my bill out with my eggs, I noticed, did not like it and figured it was just shirt (see shirt description above.) The Coffee and Eggs were $23.00 before tip. You make your own call. Over all Conclusion: I will not go back for breakfast again. Sol's on Morris Avenue is still my favorite (and under $10.00 for an excellent breakfast). I will go back for the bar, my kind of place where everyone will know my name. Dinner, questionable. Limited menu and the prices are Highland Grill prices. I will give dinner a, maybe. I hope this helps everyone. Be well. read more

Stayed at the Elyton Hotel - Autograph Collection in downtown Birmingham AL. The Yard is the restaurant inside the hotel. It was closed Sunday night for dinner but I did get to enjoy it for breakfast. Was empty on a Monday morning. Has a really neat wood and brick decor and cool bar. I did say it was Monday morning right? Yeah so no bar for me this time. . Breakfast menu looked really good with several options I wanted to try. Waitress suggested the Avocado toast but I need something more since I am flying out today and will probably not get lunch. Picked the breakfast sandwich and it was BIG! Came on a huge biscuit, but they served it with butter and jelly in case you wanted to make them separate. Also had a nice small salad also. Big picture windows line the outside allowing in plenty of light and a good view to people watch. Cool place to check out day or night. read more

I was on a business trip and stayed at the Elyton. I had a meeting at 8:30 so went to The Yard for a quick breakfast before my meeting since the restaurant was adjoined to the hotel. I ordered scrambled eggs and bacon. Pretty simple and quick to prepare so I thought. I waited for over 20 minutes and no food. Because of my meeting, I had to leave without eating. I did get a cup of coffee but never offered a refill and was never advised as to when my meal would be ready. I would not recommend eating at The Yard especially if you have to be somewhere. read more

This was an excellent restaurant. I was worried about the only Chardonnay because it was from New York, but it was delicious. The house red was Zinfandel. They did not have a Cabernet which is hat my husband drinks, but he really liked the Zinfandel. I ordered the roast chicken and it was so crispy, it was more like fried chicken. It was outstanding, salty, crispy, delicious. The smashed potatoes were like potatoes I make. They are boiled to get tender, then smashed and fried to get crispy edges. I loved that meal. My husband had charcuterie which was excellent. The only thing I didn't like was the fried okra app. It was too charred and cut so thin. The manager checked in with us he was really nice, as was the wait staff. I can definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

Just walking in im thinking this was going to be a great place to have a drink before I left town, well it started off (Not so good) I walked to the bar no bartender and all the other staff just walked by, I said nothing at first but then 5 minutes had passed and enough was enough I stopped a young lady that worked there and she said she was not the bartender but would assist me, FINALLY SOME SERVICE!!! I ordered my usual and she assisted wonderfully. Later I asked about menu's because I had not been presented one initially but realized they closed in 35 minutes I just said it was ok. After which I saw a gentleman of "lighter" persuasion walk in and immediately a host showed up and seated him. Well I am in Birmingham so I guess I have to charge it to the game. We were very excited for a dinner date with friends & decided to give The Yard a chance. We had made reservations & arrived 15m early ONLY to find a sign on the door that said "The Yard Is Closed." We don't receive a notification that they were going to closed & the people at the Elyton couldn't give us any information. So if you are thinking about giving them a try CALL before going just to make sure they are even going to open. Very sad but made the best of it & found another local restaurant for our date night. read more

This is probably my first and hopefully only one-star review. This place is hype, It only looks all fancy and posh, but they have the worst service and the most distasteful of foods I've ever had. We were here for a weekend brunch, we were seated and never attended to for the next 20 mins. After the long wait when the server did turn up, we only got water and the order was never taken. Finally after the unpleasant service experience the food that did arrive after another thirty minutes was as unappetizing as could be. The coffee that I ordered at the very beginning never arrived until the check was called for. An overall awful experience. read more

Disappointed! Scratch this restaurant off my list!!! After looking over several brunch menus in Birmingham, I made reservations for a Valentines Day brunch for two. We came here with news that the newly renovated hotel and restaurant had recently opened. What can I say, I'm a sucker for new spots in the Magic City! My family was in town and I wanted to pick a great spot for brunch. Right now The Yard is only serving breakfast food on Sunday. I was really hoping for a true brunch but we went with it anyway to give it a shot. (by the way, I don't really understand the restaurant name. It doesn't really fit, imo.) Service was oh. so. slow. I really wish this wasn't the case. Our server was pleasant, but not overly excited to serve us. We waited for a good 30-35 minutes on our food. Then we heard a plate or pan crash in the kitchen. I can only think that that was our food because it was another 10 minutes before our food finally came out. I know the restaurant is new and just getting opened but there were only 4-6 tables full of customers while we were there. Hardly busy. I really liked the ambiance of the hotel and we did enjoy the food once it came out. Everyone was pleased with what they ordered, and with a party of 7 that's pretty good. I had the eggs, over medium with sausage, biscuit and gravy. The biscuit had a great texture and the gravy had great taste too. The eggs were just right and oozed perfectly in the center (great job). All in all it was a fair experience. If the service was sped up I think it would be a five star review. Maybe once they finalize the brunch menu and get the Mimosas flowing the traffic will pick up. I'd say give them a few more months to work out the kinks and then give it a try! read more

I want to give a better review because the food truly wasn't bad, but the pricing is absolutely insane and for that reason I really can't give more stars. My husband and I drove to Birmingham from Atlanta for a concert and decided to have a nice dinner while in town. I used a reservation app to find and book the restaurant. That may have been where we went wrong, because I didn't know that The Yard was a hotel restaurant and we solely booked off the menu descriptions. In addition, we absolutely didn't need a reservation even for a Friday night because we were literally the only customers when we walked in. When we left, I think there were maybe 5 tables total seated. We decided to order the cheese board and the bison carpaccio as our appetizers and my husband ordered a lemonade as his drink. Our server made the lemonade for him since they don't regularly keep lemonade. I'm not sure what it was made of (I am thinking sour mix) because it very much tasted like a cocktail without the alcohol. I loved it, personally. My husband not so much. The cheese board was good, but $26 for 3 cheeses, 6 olives, a small chunk of honeycomb, a tablespoon of mustard and 2 pieces of toast (each sliced in half) is a bit steep for me... I loved the Brie-like cheese and we asked what it was. It's called Dancing Fern, made in Tennessee, and is a Reblochon. Delicious, amazing, a deep nutty flavor (and the server gave us her unfiltered negative opinion of the cheese that was so unexpected it made me burst out laughing). There was also a neutral, firmer white cheese and a blue cheese as well. The olives were fine. The honeycomb was extremely waxy. Not like normal. I was picking bits of wax out of my teeth. The toast was good but we ran out of it quickly and when we asked if we could get more we'd told it be "a couple of dollars extra" which we declined, because it's toast... The carpaccio was a hilariously small portion, literally 6 bite sized pieces of shaved meat for $17. It was not particularly flavorful either. For our entrees we got the venison loin for $40, and the burger for $26. My husband ordered the venison medium rare and it was certainly cooked on the rarer side of medium rare. He liked it. He gave me a small piece to try and it wasn't my thing. It was served with green beans and creamy grits. My burger was... interesting. The flavor was for sure there. The bun was so uniformly round and shiny that it felt artificial. The patty was also obviously not hand pattied. I don't know if it was a previously frozen patty, or if it's just that they use a mold, but that patty was like the bun- perfectly round and uniform, even with a little rim around the edges. A puck, if you will. It was cooked medium to my asking, but made me feel weird seeing how... manufactured it looked. For me a definite negative was being the only table in a pretty spacious restaurant with plenty of seating room. They have a generally open floor plan and part of their kitchen station is visible from the dining floor. It was uncomfortable to have all the wait staff walk back and forth past our table and looking at us (as the only people there...) and being able to see the cook staff waiting for us to put in our order so they could get to work and then sitting back down on their phones when done. If there were more patrons inside I would have never noticed. Again, I wish I could give more stars, because the taste was good, but the pricing point is way out there and doesn't reflect the quality. I would have gladly paid like $65-80 for this meal in any other city in the world. But our bill was over $100 for two apps and 2 entrees (and one entree was a burger...) and that's just not justifiable for me. My husband felt the same and said if it weren't for the price he would happily recommend the restaurant for those visiting town. read more

Went on New Years. They had a limited menu, which was fine. It was a 4 course meal. The first course we had the panna cotta. It came out frozen solid. They said it was intentional, so it "holds the form." Drinks took more than 30 minutes even though the restaurant was not crowded. For a $100 per person meal, it was not great. Would not recommend. At least not during New Years limited menu. read more

First of all let me say clearly, I would suggest this place if not for 1 thing, price. Service was great, food tastes good, fairly quiet and good location. As well, my family and I are acquainted with many of Bham restaurants and make it a point to visit new ones often. So we can say with experience and knowledge that the price was too high for what you received. Especially the appetizer selection. But I do strongly encourage you to make your own call. We had brunch here after a weekend stay at the Elyton. I loved the decor and atmosphere and the food was really good. I travel a good bit and stay at plenty of hotels. I would eat here even if not staying here. The breakfast/bunch was large amounts of food and very well done. I had the OG and my husband the Mobile Bay omelet and he said it was one of the best he has had. He has also traveled extensively and grew up near the coast. The omelet was overflowing with seafood. The biscuits were large, fluffy but substantial, the bacon was excellent and the grits were rough cut and savory (not a creamy bowl of cheese which is also good, but these were more traditional hearty grits). read more

I stayed at The Hotel Elyton this weekend for my birthday. It was my first time staying here even though I stay in Birmingham quite a bit. I usually stay at the Westin in Uptown. I may do a review on the hotel later but I want to review The Yard restaurant. So a friend in my group ordered a burger from them the night before and while she said the burger was "okay" but not $23 okay the homemade chips were clearly cooked in old grease which I tasted. Even so the next morning I needed to eat something to get me together after a long night of celebrations so I ordered breakfast. Pic below. Eggs was eggs, breakfast potatoes were good but the bacon was burnt to a crisp. The conecuh sausage, I hate to say was cold and burnt too and I wouldn't have believed that either if I didn't see/taste it myself. How could you mess up Conecuh sausage the best sausage EVER!!!! I have anxiety thinking about it. Oh and they didnt have any bottle water? read more

Hate that I'm having to write this because The Yard used to be one of my favorites. They must have a new chef. I brought my mom for a pre-Mother's Day brunch and the food was awful. Neither the eggs nor bacon were made to order (that was corrected but still not edible). Biscuits were undercooked and cold. In all, I had cup of lukewarm coffee for brunch. There's something apropos about this restaurant being located on the "heaviest corner on earth" and the human rectum. More specifically, the increased likelihood your rectum is going to want more vacation time physiologically air-gapped from your brain and 'heavy' consequences of being subjected to the gastroenterological torture test that is the food served here. I'm only taking the time to write this review for two reasons; 1) to give at least one star for the server who provided sympathetic, not good service but sympathetic, service (and likely brought their own lunch to work), and 2) provide as much of humanity as possible the most far-reaching word of warning possible. READ AND HEED! This restaurant cannot be bothered to change its posted menu outdoors on Sunday's to let passers by know what's for brunch. I watched no less than six groups of people walk up to the posted menu outdoors, observe a menu with dinner offerings, and continue on their way. This restaurant charges more than $12 for "S'mores French toast" that comes with two tablespoon of blueberries that are likely plated and left under hot lamps to wait for the rest of the order. There's NOTHING "only the best and freshest ingredients" about this French toast. I'll leave the picture of this 'brunch' dish here for you to decide, but not sure how long it will be available since Sysco Foods might claim ownership ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The brunch 'hamburger' is a grease pit of two animal protein patties, an over-easy egg, and a dollop of some kind of jelly. That's it. Served with chips, it's brown diet-only for your colon. No pickle, lettuce, tomato, onion, or anything else. Velvet waffles for chicken n waffles?! No, no, no...I don't care how "artistic" my surroundings are at the Yard. The FOOD should be the art, and not because my toilet looks like an abstract expressionist studio for fecal action painting moments after consuming food from what appears to be a kitchen full of 'not my job'/'act your wage' types. I spent 4 nights at the Elyton Hotel and The Yard is their full service restaurant. While there, I had 3 breakfasts and 2 dinners. Most outstanding was the perfectly cooked filet mignon; excellent flavor and perfect size. The scallops were perfectly cooked but the sides were unusual and too salty. The breakfasts were okay but ordering from the menu took too long. The oatmeal was overcooked to the point of being a white paste without texture. read more

Came here for dinner and cocktails on a Friday evening. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. Staff was very friendly. We actually sat at the bar so there was no wait. The restaurant is in the newly renovated Elyton Hotel in downtown Birmingham. Nice addition to the city. A little on the pricier side in terms of entree's with not a whole ton of options. Filling but not overwhelming with huge portion. There has to be a happy medium but I understand I guess. Just wish there were more options food wise for $36 buck entree. Again not a bad dish. Giving this place five stars mainly for the service. Our waitress, Annie, was super super nice and helped me out with ALOT of question. I'm usually not one to eat all "fancy" like, but if you want to go out and treat yourself/significant others then this would be a nice place to go. They did not have to many options to choose from, but I got some kind of chicken plate on vegetables and it was pretty good, but nothing to special about the taste. It did look very beautiful when brought out to me. My boyfriend got the meatloaf. Neither one of us really ate at the actual restaurant. We got the chicken shawarma as an appetizer and it was delicious! Annie also asked us if we wanted some jalapeño cornbread they had made extra so between that and the shawarma we filled up before we even had our meal! We didn't mind because that meant leftovers for the next day!! :) I honestly wouldn't go back because of the pricing, but if you are looking for some alright food and good quality customer service this is a nice place downtown! While it might look nice from the outside, the food is absolutely bland. The shrimp appetizers were both over cooked, the tuna looked like it was peeled off a nigiri box from Publix, and Every. Single. Dish. Needed salt. It was ridiculous. The fish portions were uneven and I kid you not when I genuinely ask if the chef knows how to cook using any sort of seasoning. It's almost as if the food is colored with food dye to give the illusion of flavor and then when consumed, you realize you're eating mush. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WITH A PALATE. The servers were kind, but there was clearly no communication because when called to confirm the reservation, they said they had a tasting menu and when we got there they said they had just cancelled it. read more

Came here for a dinner on a weeknight. It's decorated very well and feels modern but comfortable. We had the sweetbreads and pork belly for appetizers. Both were good, but not great and the portions were very small. I had the Black Angus filet. It was just ok, considering the price of it, it should have been much better. The steak was undercooked and charred on the outside. We shared the dessert sampler, all three options were really good and the highlight of my meal. I think the portions and the quality do not live up to the high prices placed on the cuisine here. read more

Ate here this morning for breakfast. Service was excellent and the food was even better! First of all, if you serve me coffee as I'm sitting down that's a great start to the service; not to mention the coffee they served (complimentary) was amazing! Two of us had the bacon, cheese, and fried egg biscuit. It was delicious and came with a flavorful slaw of some type. The third member of our party had the skillet breakfast hash and it was wonderful as well. I was also pleasantly surprised that the fruit bowl was not melon, and had fresh blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries! We had mimosas after we finished which were made with only a little OJ, just how I like them! I will definitely be returning! read more

Brunch review only!!! Had a girl's holiday brunch on a Sunday. So in keeping with the stunning interior of the hotel, the restaurant decor does not disappoint! It gives me rustic glam vibes - cool pendant light fixtures that give off a warm glow, beige and brown tones in the fabrics and furniture, mixed seating arrangements (booths/tables). The service was excellent on our visit and should've been because it was not busy at all at 12:45pm, which was nice for us! The menu had a good variety of brunch options, with customizations if requested. The only thing I was disappointed in is the lack of meat options - no turkey or chicken sausauge options for non swine eaters. I ended up with the veggie omelet that came with the stone ground grits and I added a biscuit since our waiter was talking them up! The omelet was delicious and was stuffed with cremini mushrooms, bell peppers, spinach and onions. The grits were very creamy and hearty. The biscuit was standard but they had cute little jars of jams and a house blackberry spread that was quite tasty! Overall it was ok, the lack of meat options is the deal breaker for me when there's soo many other places that offer more variety! I'm sure I'll be back but it won't be because I picked it! read more

We live downtown and so wanted this to be a great brunch place. Sadly, we won't be returning. The experience started off promising when a very nice gentleman seated us at a window table and quickly got us coffee and water. He said our waiter would be over shortly. Well, 15 mins and we still didn't see a waiter and as we started to look around a waitress noticed us looking. Clearly we were not in her station but she came over to take our order. She said she wasn't sure if she would be our waitress but would get our order in. I ordered a mimosa to start and a couple of biscuits. Again, another 15 or so minutes passed before our biscuits came out. We had to ask for the mimosa which was half OJ and half champagne ($10). Things stated to look up when eventually our breakfast came out. My husband's Elyton OG was very simple, two eggs, two strips of bacon and he substituted potatoes for grits. The toast my husband ordered on the side came out after he finished his eggs. My breakfast skillet was swimming in grease (see pic). I could barely eat a third if it. Both dishes were way over salted. The biscuits were clearly not a local recipe and the jam was low grade jelly. The experience was a real disappointment in that while the location and space was really nice the service was marginal and the food was terrible. We will take our $50-$60 elsewhere next time. read more

This came pretty highly recommended to us, so we stopped by for brunch on our way out of town. Got cathead biscuits, which were super underwhelming. The pepper jelly toast was just stale bread with chopped peppers on top- no jelly in sight. I got the yogurt and berries, and I'm convinced the yogurt was expired- in addition, there were exactly 5 berries and a tiny pinch of granola. The All American breakfast was alright, but the s'mores French toast and spicy chicken with red velvet waffle were both very, very dry and underwhelming. The saving graces were the coffee and that we had a 20% off coupon from hotel. Also... said online that they were booked, so we jumped through lots of hoops to make reservation (as it is Father's Day and we were expecting a crowd) and there was literally only one other family sat in this empty restaurant. My husband and I stayed at The Elyton Hotel and had breakfast at The Yard the morning we checked out. Although the restaurant was not busy (Monday morning), we had a relaxing dining experience. Damien served us. He was definitely attentive refilling our coffee, which was a delicious brew of Royal Cup! My husband ordered the Eggs Benedict which had a crawfish hollandaise sauce. It came on a biscuit instead of an English muffin, which he enjoyed. I ordered the Mobile Bay omelet. It came with a side of stone ground grits (which needed flavor) and a delicious biscuit! The omelet consisted of folded eggs with the crawfish & shrimp on top. I've never had the omelet fillings on top and preferred this! The flavor was delish!
