New Owners! - Disregard reviews before October 2012 - it's not the same place! Owner Rich is an attentive, energetic, and friendly person (not to mention interesting as heck - are you a rocker? traveler? then he is your man). We had a wonderful breakfast and even better service. We chowed down on corned beef hash and blueberry pancakes made by Rich's son. Our daughter (lives locally) found out where we'd gone and screamed "No! they are so rude!" But she (as with these pre-October Yelpers) was refering to the prior owners. We tried the Worker Bee based on the super reviews on Yelp....but were so disappointed! Food was okay, although my "over easy" eggs were almost hard -- otherwise it was just usual breakfast fare. The owners were polite, but not really friendly. The cafe was mostly empty, so they weren't too busy, just not interested. Jaime seemed annoyed to have to make a pot of decaf coffee, as "most people don't want decaf early in the morning." We tried.....but no love. Too many other choices in Carp to go back. read more

NEW NICE OWNERS, YEAH. GOOD FOOD. I have lived in Carp for 12 years and have only eaten at The Worker Bee twice because I found the food to be very greasy and the wife owner was mean and nasty. BUT GOOD NEWS - new owners, good food (I had a breakfast special - corned beef hash, eggs and homemade biscuit) and the owner/waiter was very friendly and informative. But they need to lose the bees and all the kitsch - which are only dust collectors and make the place feel claustrophobic. I wanted to throw them out myself. And I hope they make the lunch menu more interesting. Carp needs a new restaurant where the food is consistently good and interesting. I hope the new owners won't live in the past and will wow us with something new and interesting. Get rid of the bees and the bad karma! read more

Took a friend visiting from out of state to Carp for the day and had a late breakfast there. Fantastic food! So many gluten free options on the menu. We had an amazing gluten free french toast dish with blueberries, whipped cream and a side of farm fresh scrambled eggs. The gluten free cinnamon-raisin bread they use is amazing. My husband and I ate at the cafe Monday morning at the recommendation of the hotel clerk. We were sorely disappointed! Nice location, nice atmosphere, nice music but that is where the nice ended. I ordered the French toast w/blueberries. It came out looking like a soggy blue mess! It would have been better if they would have just used fresh berries on top. My husband had the grilled biscuits and gravy. It was tasteless, like it was out of a can. Paprika was sprinkled on top for presentation, whoo, hoo - not impressed. Wife and I were traveling and needed to change drivers, so jumped off the highway into Carpentaria and saw that this place had a good rating on Yelp so stopped in for lunch. I spent a weekend in Carpenteria and read the good reviews about this place and decided to go. It did live up to the reviews. The food was fresh and very good. A definate place that locals frequent makes the experience of dinning there all the better. This place is overrated and overpriced! I will never come back to this place again! Although the owner seems nice, the service sucks and the food is mediocre and not up to the overall 4 star review. I ordered an omelet that included the hash brown. Don't order the hash brown cuz it's a very nasty wet greasy hash brown! Never seen anything like it. In addition, I didn't ask for butter in my toast and I don't even use butter at all, they just assumed I like butter and smothered my toast with butter! I didn't want to return it because I was hungry and already waited about 15 minutes. When I asked the waitress about not asking for the butter she said that all bread are buttered per the menu. Classic, greasy spoon diner that specializes in breakfast. In the past I've heard complaints about the service and brusk treatment doled out by the owners, but when we went the service was nothing but pleasant, helpful and all around cordial. I'd say the place is aware of the bad comments because it seems like they're trying to do something about. I heard a waiter ask patrons a couple times while we were there how the service was. Great food, great service! Food seemed to take a little while coming out but that could be because the people next to us had muffins and oatmeal while we had omelets and chicken fried steak. Food was definitely worth the wait though. Omelet had all the veggie choices you wanted for no extra cost and I got my favorite combination and it was so much better then most places! The goodies were actually cooked together not just thrown in the middle to warm up and the biscuit was fluffy and moist. Even though food took a bit we were getting consistent refills from the staff and help if we wanted anything. I definitely recommend them. read more

just got back from Carpenteria and i know its been awhile since we have been to the THE WORKING BEE CAFE and we knew the original owner and thought maybe we would stop by and have a great breakfast and found out they had new owners and along with the original owner went the quality of the food. I could taste the grill that made my waffle and they were very bland. The salt and pepper shakers and sugar shaker were not cleaned in awhile. Very disappointed to say the least. I will say the hospitality was great but they really need to get the quality of their food and presentation in order. read more

Love love love this sweet place. I sit on the back sweet patio (with more seating recently added). It is dog friendly and Joseph is so great. He brings Otis ice water every time and if it needs to be refreshed he brings more. The food is amazing and so well seasoned. Four of us just went to The Worker Bee for breakfast for the first time. We all had something different and we all really enjoyed the food. Rick, the owner, bakes all the gluten free items and will tell you every ingredient used. My sis ordered the gluten free French toast. The bread was cut thick and she was in heaven. She can't eat any domestic wheat so this was a real treat for her. I had an egg scramble and it was delicious!! I couldn't figure out why it was so much more flavorful than usual until I found out that Rick only uses free range farm fresh eggs and I think they come from his chickens!! The rye bread he serves was hearty and really good. My bro in law is a vegetarian and he had a grilled cheese and avocado sandwich with fries. He said it was really tasty and he really liked the fries which had a light seasoning which boosted the flavor. Key words here are fresh, flavorful, yummy and welcoming. Rick is totally into his food, his customers and his music. He's also a musician and loves talking music, his grandkids and his food. He's a bundle of great energy and he makes you feel like a regular customer. Awesome breakfast place in Carpinteria. Definitely worth the wait. The decor is adorable, everyone was friendly, and the food was yummy! Try to get there early, though, as there seems to be more of a rush the later it gets in the day. And like someone else said - not good for big groups as it's only got around 12 tables or so. read more

We had breakfast here june 9th and the food was good, we stopped here again over the weekend and ordered the same thing , eggs benedict ( extremely undercooked eggs, and burnt biscuits , and pancakes , which were rubbery and tasteless, and the blueberries were just thrown on top( not included in the batter) . I don't know if a new cook was hired, but we couldn't believe the difference in quality in one month!! The owner was very rude and outright denied that anything was wrong( he's apparently in the wrong profession ) he even told us never to come back, as if we would . Being from Texas and all, I know small diners and dives. This place is top on my list for Central California and mom and pop establishments. Don't go in expecting quick, grub 'n go cause Ma 'n Pa don't wanna move that fast and quite frankly they don't have too. (Remember that Carpinteria is a small, lazy town) They want you to come and chat it up with them. Wonderful biscuits and gravy and everything truly southern! I don't leave reviews as often any more, as there are few unique places left in Orange County, where I currently live. While staying in Carpinteria for my Uncles wedding, my family and I were looking for breakfast on the 4th of July. Based on Yelp rating, we chose the Worker Bee Cafe. Everything was as expected. Both Mom and Pop were there, Pop in the kitchen and Mom working the tables. Service was very friendly and attentive, the food was good, and the decor was homely. Two large families came in after us, and after they were seated, the staff gave the kids a big bucket of toys to keep them occupied. I wish I could find more places like this in the OC, but places like this give small town their small town charm. read more

The Worker Bee is the best breakfast place within 20 miles! The Worker Benedict is by far my favorite breakfast anywhere. The gravy is fantastic, poached eggs perfect, and the hash browns are the best anywhere. We come once a week and have been doing this for over a year. We drive 20 miles also. We stumbled upon this adorable restaurant on our way to Wine Country . Our waitress was friendly and helped steer me in the right direction for food. They have a very extensive menu including Gluten Free options. I got the Potato Skins with perfectly poached eggs. I am a poached egg snob too. My hubby got the Breakfast Burrito with Jalepéno bacon! So - we read some reviews and sadly almost passed this place up. Thankfully, our alternative looked terrible so we came here and were so so so thrilled with that call. Delicious French toast, the owner is super attentive, and the service is pretty on point. As pointed out in other reviews, hash is a bit greasy, and the wait is a tad long - but guess what...it's a diner! It's all about atmosphere and grease!!
