We visited Carpinteria for the first time as a little summer escape from the heat in Simi Valley, and after arriving hungry, we came across this place. What a great find! The restaurant was busy, with tables pretty much full both inside and outside, but luckily we were able to get seated without a wait. I ordered the fish tacos, my son had the linguini pomodoro, and my wife ordered the cioppino. Everything was delicious. The seafood tasted incredibly fresh, and the fish in the cioppino was so tender it practically melted in your mouth. The broth was rich and savory--maybe a little on the salty side, but we still really enjoyed it. The service was another highlight. Everyone was kind, friendly, and welcoming, and you could tell the staff was working hard to make sure everyone had a good experience. I also really liked how diverse the menu is. There are plenty of choices for different tastes, whether you're in the mood for seafood, pasta, tacos, or something else. Overall, this was an awesome first experience and a great discovery during our trip to Carpinteria. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town, and we're looking forward to trying more dishes from the menu! read more

This used to be one of our favorite spots in Carpinteria, which makes it especially disappointing to leave a 1-star review. Unfortunately, after giving Teddy's by the Sea multiple chances, the problems have become too consistent to overlook. We've had repeated issues with online orders--food mixed up or not prepared the way we ordered it. On one occasion, we even found a piece of plastic in our lobster mac and cheese. But the most frustrating issue has been the completely inconsistent closing time. They advertise that they're open until 8:30 PM, yet we've shown up as early as 7:40 PM and been told they're already closed. This hasn't happened just once--it's happened to us multiple times. We really used to enjoy coming here, but between the order mistakes, the plastic in the food, and never knowing whether they'll actually be open during their posted hours, we've finally given up. If you advertise that you're open until 8:30, customers should reasonably be able to expect you to be open at 7:40. read more

I wish I could base this review on solely the strength of the warm service and the charming location (albeit not, in fact, by the sea). Alas, I need to consider the food which was a serious letdown. The Kale & Quinoa Salad would pale in comparison to a college dining hall salad bar, but with the beach town markup. There was a dearth of the listed ingredients, a vacancy filled by cabbage and carrots (neither listed). The dressing actually tasted promising but was only noticeable for approximately two bites, thanks in part to the inadequate mixing on account of poorly chopped kale. Driving back from Santa Ynez to LA, we popped into Teddy's by the Sea for a quick lunch. Seated immediately out front, and bonus points for ample parking in the back. I ordered a Bloody Mary. It was good, but I later spotted a "Mary by the Sea" on the menu that sounded like a clear upgrade. Would have loved that to be mentioned. Easy upsell, missed opportunity. My friend got the margarita flight and was very happy. We started with the ahi nachos, then each had a cup of clam chowder and split a wedge salad. The ahi nachos were solid but felt like they were missing a little something. A hit of citrus or spice would have taken them up a notch. The clam chowder was thick and really well done with a great clam to potato ratio. The wedge was classic and fresh. A little light on the bacon, but honestly, no complaints there. There are lots of eateries in Carpinteria, but this is definitely one of the better ones. I had lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. Although this place is very popular it wasn't especially crowded that day, so we were able to get immediate seating. Most of the seating is outdoors, but they do have some indoor seating should that be your preference. There are heat lamps at each table in the outdoor area, which is nice if the weather requires it. I ordered the crab cake sliders which I thought was nice and tasty. It comes with a potato chips or french fries, but I upgraded to sweet potato fries for an additional $2. I don't believe the restaurant has their own parking lot, but there is ample free street parking nearby. read more

I was up in SLO and I was looking for a dog friendly restaurant to have lunch at in Carpinteria on the way down the coast. I choose Teddy's by the Sea and I'm so glad I did. We showed up at 1pm on a Friday and parked in the back. They gave us a great patio seat and my little dog was happy to be sitting with us. My housemate ordered fish tacos with their amazing house made potato chips and I got the crazy good ceviche. Great little bar inside, cool vibes and amazing food. My wife and I live in Ojai and go to the beach and lunch in Carpenteria a few times during the summer. We've been to Teddy's twice before and thought the food was just OK but I overpriced as the location was tourist friendly. We went the other day and it seems Teddy's has dropped down from 4 to 3 stars. The crab cakes were smaller than last time, they were barely warm and at $20 for 2 small cakes they were seriously overpriced. They tasted just OK - I've had better. My wife, who tends to add salt to her food found the clam chowder too salty - I tasted it and agreed. My fish and chips were good but a little too greasy. The only beverage we ordered was an Arnold Palmer - total bill with tip was just over $80 for a mediocre lunch. Price is what you pay, value is what you get - the value is just not there so we won't be returning on our next trip to Carp. read more

Excellent! We loved this place! Right in the heart of Carpenteria, nothing fancy, excellent food! We sat on the patio with our little dog...great view of the passers by and the burger place next door was hopping! I will say that our server was a bit slow and lacked personality... we told him it was our first time here, he wasn't eager to recommend any dishes. I asked him about the seared tuna and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "ya not real popular, people order it some like it some don't." Ok? The food here is very good, not spectacularly incredible but would definitely recommend it and go again. Here's the breakdown on a couple dishes: Bacon wrapped dates: delicious and a good portion. Teddy's Tropical Ceviche: plenty of fish and tortilla chips but I tossed the giant pile of red onions that came on top. Personally I would have preferred red peppers instead like the way the Mac and cheese came, but that's just me and I'm sure they would have kept the onions off if I'd asked but I didn't know it had them. But it was really delicious nonetheless. Lobster Mac and cheese: is Langostino Lobster? No. Are they using langostinos as lobster? Yes. Would I have ordered langostino mac and cheese? Yes. Am I annoyed that they are calling langostino Mac and cheese lobster Mac and cheese? Absolutely. Was the langostino Mac and cheese good? It was excellent. Lots of langostino and delicious cheese blend. Tommy's margarita: great! Loved it. Classic margarita! Rincon margarita: smoky and gingery. Over gingered for my taste, need a balance so we can taste the other ingredients too. Mai Tai: good but kind of the same problem; all pineapple. Service was friendly, good natured and efficient. Well, things have certainly changed. Cousin in from New York, spent day at beach, hungry, Super Bowl Sunday, so nobody there lol. We order ahi nachos, make quinoa salad, and fish and chips I proceed to get the worst meal I've ever had there. Ahi not that fresh. Kale salad: inedible. It looked like a whole bag of huge pieces of tough, unchopped kale thrown in a bowl. A few pieces of Parmesan, where's the quinoa? Couldn't eat much of that. Fish and chips: warm , not hot and crispy, doughy batter, lukewarm fish. Sweet potato fries lukewarm not crispy, usually my favorite only had a few of those. Ate the fish, we were hungry. DO NOT TAKE CHILDREN HERE. This was the worst place possible to ever eat. There was a group of drunk people. Starting flights, screaming swear words, and nothing was done. The bar tenders just kept giving them shots. Children were inside and absolutely nothing was done about it. Everything about Teddy's is mediocre. Bland and slow customer service. Unobservant older gal monitoring the 35% tables occupied by guests could care less about the actual customers experience and focused getting the tables cleared for the absent customers. Calamari was chewy, topped with banana peppers and served with "lemon aioli" aka straight mayonnaise. Tartar sauce was another slightly off version of pure mayonnaise. Fish and chips were OK, but super light portion of fish and off putting dipping sauces. Grilled/fried chicken sandwich saturated in mayonnaise, no garlic detected, ad quite flavorless despite arugula and red peppers. Portion was faulty underwhelming. Throw in 2 sodas and we are at $71 for a mediocre lunch at best. Best part of the restaurant is the patio. Would not return and this was our 3rd attempt. read more
