We visited Carpinteria for the first time as a little summer escape from the heat in Simi Valley, and after arriving hungry, we came across this place. What a great find! The restaurant was busy, with tables pretty much full both inside and outside, but luckily we were able to get seated without a wait. I ordered the fish tacos, my son had the linguini pomodoro, and my wife ordered the cioppino. Everything was delicious. The seafood tasted incredibly fresh, and the fish in the cioppino was so tender it practically melted in your mouth. The broth was rich and savory--maybe a little on the salty side, but we still really enjoyed it. The service was another highlight. Everyone was kind, friendly, and welcoming, and you could tell the staff was working hard to make sure everyone had a good experience. I also really liked how diverse the menu is. There are plenty of choices for different tastes, whether you're in the mood for seafood, pasta, tacos, or something else. Overall, this was an awesome first experience and a great discovery during our trip to Carpinteria. I wish I could base this review on solely the strength of the warm service and the charming location (albeit not, in fact, by the sea). Alas, I need to consider the food which was a serious letdown. The Kale & Quinoa Salad would pale in comparison to a college dining hall salad bar, but with the beach town markup. There was a dearth of the listed ingredients, a vacancy filled by cabbage and carrots (neither listed). The dressing actually tasted promising but was only noticeable for approximately two bites, thanks in part to the inadequate mixing on account of poorly chopped kale. There are lots of eateries in Carpinteria, but this is definitely one of the better ones. I had lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. Although this place is very popular it wasn't especially crowded that day, so we were able to get immediate seating. Most of the seating is outdoors, but they do have some indoor seating should that be your preference. There are heat lamps at each table in the outdoor area, which is nice if the weather requires it. I ordered the crab cake sliders which I thought was nice and tasty. It comes with a potato chips or french fries, but I upgraded to sweet potato fries for an additional $2. I don't believe the restaurant has their own parking lot, but there is ample free street parking nearby. read more

The crab cakes were smaller than last time, they were barely warm and at $20 for 2 small cakes they were seriously overpriced. They tasted just OK - I've had better. My wife, who tends to add salt to her food found the clam chowder too salty - I tasted it and agreed. My fish and chips were good but a little too greasy. The only beverage we ordered was an Arnold Palmer - total bill with tip was just over $80 for a mediocre lunch. Price is what you pay, value is what you get - the value is just not there so we won't be returning on our next trip to Carp. read more

Driving back from Santa Ynez to LA, we popped into Teddy's by the Sea for a quick lunch. Seated immediately out front, and bonus points for ample parking in the back. I ordered a Bloody Mary. It was good, but I later spotted a "Mary by the Sea" on the menu that sounded like a clear upgrade. Would have loved that to be mentioned. Easy upsell, missed opportunity. My friend got the margarita flight and was very happy. We started with the ahi nachos, then each had a cup of clam chowder and split a wedge salad. Teddy's Tropical Ceviche: plenty of fish and tortilla chips but I tossed the giant pile of red onions that came on top. Unobservant older gal monitoring the 35% tables occupied by guests could care less about the actual customers experience and focused getting the tables cleared for the absent customers. Calamari was chewy, topped with banana peppers and served with "lemon aioli" aka straight mayonnaise. Tartar sauce was another slightly off version of pure mayonnaise. Fish and chips were OK, but super light portion of fish and off putting dipping sauces. Grilled/fried chicken sandwich saturated in mayonnaise, no garlic detected, ad quite flavorless despite arugula and red peppers. Portion was faulty underwhelming.
