The kitchen was wide and bright with a picture window over looking the land view behind the Inn. Just to the left of the bench starts the entry way to the next room and the heart of guest gatherings, the dining room. Wide pine floors, post and beam. Beautiful country style dining room table with a bright window on the rear wall. Way better than a hotel that is for sure! Continue past the dining room and enter the next room, the living room. Roaring fires, parcheesi, the game of life, reading magazines about vt real estate, the New Yorker, and just lounging in a vt country setting. That's how I spent my NYE 2014 with my wife and baby to be in the living room. This living room with it's wide pine floors, Christmas tree with lights and hydrangeas from Kim's garden, rocking chair and oversized brick rustic fireplace, oriental carpets...half way into this room on the right wall is an entry way back to the rear of the dining room. Just before the dining room is a small bar area and coffe station. VT craft beers and VT coffee and teas! Also the storage area for games and a CD player, a small bar sink as well. The breakfast each day were amazing! The homemade granola was out of this world, the scones, waffles, sausages, baked pear were out of this world. Again, way better than a hotel could ever do. The bedroom we stayed in was Babcock. It had a queen sized bed with lots of pillows and a nice semi firm mattress. We also had a small TV and a private bathroom with shower and tub. Always a nice touch! It had wide pine floors too. Outside of the house is a large deck and hot tub. We didn't try it but I think a guest did on the first night we were there. I think you should book a night or two at this Inn and enjoy all of what VT and the Mad River Valley has to offer. We had a great holiday vacation.

Kim and Bob are such gracious hosts. They knew the valley so well and were so friendly and fun! Kim's breakfasts would make even Gordon Ramsay cheer! The puff pancake with marscapone and fresh berries was A-mazing. The room was exactly what one would expect at a beautiful inn: fluffy pillows, down comforter, large private bath... The lake is beautiful for swimming and other water sports, and they have a lot of stuff available to borrow - kayaks, canoes, paddle boards. Food was good - some really good options for the breakfast and dinner buffets, and the outdoor pizza place was good as well. I tried a mocktail or two that were pretty good, and they had a bunch of local brews on tap and in cans, which some of our crew sampled and seemed to enjoy. The lodge itself was nice to hang around as well - really liked the big central area, including some recreational stuff like puzzles, board games, pool, ping pong, and the fitness center had some good stuff there too. Sitting outside looking at the lake and mountains was really nice too, or standing on the dock in the morning. Oh, and the free concert series was really cool - I discovered a new artist to listen to while there! Overall a really beautiful spot that I would absolutely visit again!

Spectacular ice skating on a 4 mile loop around a beautiful Vermont lake, a truly unique…read moreexperience, comfortable and friendly accommodations. The skate trail is as wide as a two lane road. Tons of space for every level of skater. There is a rentals shop with hockey skates, figure skates, trail skates, and "support" accessories for those just learning or not super stable on skates. The trail is cleared daily, but when there is a snow storm it takes longer. The ice conditions are totally weather dependent. We've been here 3 times, one time the ice was smooth and very easy to skates on, one time we couldn't skate at all because the weather earlier in the week created slush, which then froze, and was so bumpy skating wasn't possible, and then it rained and the skate trial had 3 inches of water on it. This year, the trail opened earlier than ever (Jan 9) and this week (Feb school break) the weather was perfect for skating! Mostly smooth ice, some bumps in some spots, but easy to avoid, and it is a lake, so to be expected. The hotel is perfect for families with kids of any age. There were many multi-generations groups here together. They do lots of kid oriented things in addition to the skating (a movie theater, DJ and dance floor, ping pong, heated indoor swimming pool, billiards, a variety of games and puzzles. Free-range kids everywhere. The restaurant serves the basics. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We ate here for one dinner, and tried the Beet salad, the pork dumplings, the soft pretzels, and the Ruben sandwich...and all were good. This place is not luxury. It has a classic historical hotel feeling about it, with lots of old photos on the walls to prove it. This place is a good value in the winter. Everything you need, friendly staff, beautiful views of the lake restaurant and bar on site for breakfast, lunch and dinner so if you don't want to leave once you get here, there is no need to. Between the four of us, we had the Filet Mignon, Iberico pork tenderloin, day boat scallops, and the lemongrass-infused striped bass. Every single dish was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. It's rare that everyone at the table loves what they ordered, but that was definitely the case. Chef Dylan Taylor's new menu is fantastic, and it really shows. Everything felt fresh, creative, and thoughtfully prepared without being overdone. The dining room is elegant but still feels warm and comfortable. Dinner started with an anchovy amuse-bouche that had a nice savory taste. They even offered a free glass of champagne for my birthday. The grilled octopus was nice and light, and the cauliflower was okay with the dish. It was a smaller potion, but left room for the remaining courses. The tagliatelle was cooked well and the tomatoes and mushrooms added nicely to the dish. This was a nice sized portion, and definitely filling. The chocolate raspberry tart was more on the chocolatey side. Maybe my least favorite course from those I had, but nonetheless still good. The check came with petit four which was a nice touch. My waiter, Sergiu, was delightful and made me feel welcome the entire time. I really enjoyed my dinner here and would look to return.

I'm currently in love with Lawson's Sip of Sunshine and they had it on tap so it was going to be hard for me not to enjoy the place after that. When we came in one night and I wanted wine, I was surprised to find that I really liked the white the bartender (who was super nice) poured for me. He didn't have much of a red selection, but the white was so good I'll forgive them. The best part of this bar, though, is the availability of both foosball and darts. There are two dart boards and darts hanging out in the main room but if you want a nicer set you should check with the bartender and be nice- much better quality darts. It appears that they don't do food anymore, but they did have a French bulldog running around at one point which is much better than food. The Hostel is also one of the pickup places for the local free bus which was also super convenient. So even if you aren't staying there or right next door feel free to get your drink on, call the bus driver, and get a free ride home.

Coming from 2 hostels on this side of the US with more influx of guests, I was confused by why there were no signs on how to enter for check-in or a reminder of lobby hours. There was nothing in front saying guests should go to the back to enter but yet there are steps leading to a front door that I later found out is always locked. No instructions on how to locate the lobby in the email either. I stayed in a 8-bed dorm room above the restaurant and check-in office. The room faces the road so you'll hear road noise since the one window is left open for the portable air conditioner. There was another dorm room right behind. Light sleepers will need an earplug. The bathroom was very clean, colorful, and had modern, cute features. Other things to note: - Not sure there is a shuttle (common with other hostels in the region) - Not sure there are lockers - There are bedside lights by every bed and power outlets are on the bottom bunks only. - The dorm room had a ceiling fan and portable air conditioner - There was Body wash in the shower but no shampoo or conditioner. - There are 2 or 3 toilets and 1 shower upstairs in that building. - The kitchen fridge is cute but small in size for the number of beds. - There are 2 living/sitting rooms - There are some board games available - There is a restaurant on-site. - A brew of coffee is made every morning. - There was no stove to cook
