Keane Valley is about 30 mins south of Lake Placid and only an hour from Plattsburgh. It's an incredibly beautiful area with plenty of hiking, waterfalls, peaks, rivers, and crystal clear lakes. The Roostercomb Inn is the perfect location because most of the trailheads we went to we're 5-15 minutes away by car. It's right off the main road in town, next to Black Mountain Coffee, and down the street for a little market named Valley Grocery. The Inn is mostly hostel style with 6 bedrooms varying from queen size bed, to twins, to even bunk beds with communal bathrooms. There's 2 bathrooms with showers/tub, and 2 bathrooms with just toilets. The suite we rented had it's own private bath, which to us was worth the extra money. The inn has a fully stocked kitchen so you can cook all 3 meals a day if you want, though I would recommend eating at least one meal at Forty Six restaurant down the street! There's two dining tables inside, and an outside table on the back patio which also has a grill, lounge chair, place to hang wet clothes, and a gorgeous view of the mountains. There's a fire pit out back, and the garden around the inn has beautiful flowers. The bottom floor of the front of the inn has a real fire place, some super comfy chairs for lounging, and another small kitchen with dining table in case there's the need. The rest of the downstairs are living quarters for the tenants. This building is from the 1800s, and although the hallways are a little crooked, there's so much character to this place! Most of the furniture is hand made wood and there's a lot of unique touches throughout. I will say that the bed definitely wasn't queen size and that the mattress needs to be replaced. Most guests probably sleep quickly and leave early, but we were really wanting to enjoy our time without our son and sleeping in was one of the goals! Noise levels weren't really a problem from inside, but there is a church across the street that chimes every hour and you can hear road noise. I also need to add that the windows need some curtains, because they don't block the sun and at night they are very lit up from the street lights. These are just a few touches that would've changed our stay from a 4 to a 5 star. I would say that being a suite they might want to add some more upgrades for couples who might be celebrating their wedding or anniversary. However, we would definitely stay here again! The little details in the room like the blow dryer, soaps, kitchenette that had both a coffee machine and hot water kettle were so thoughtful! They provided coffee beans and grinder for fresh coffee. They also had a tin with different teas. They provided all the cups, dishes, and silverware you would need so you could stay in your room. There's a small refrigerator and microwave as well. The closet had a cot bed that could be used for children, as well as additional pillows and blankets. There was a dresser for storing clothes, and a small electric fireplace. Magdalena is one of the owners and she was quite charming. She gave us recommendations of hikes in the area, and was very accommodating when asked for help. She gave me some of her chamomile tea when I didn't see any in our room or the shared kitchen, and she allowed us to come back and shower on our last day after we had checked out. We were hiking and swimming, and taking a flight later that night, so it was really nice for her to let us come back, especially since it ended up pouring rain in the afternoon! This place is quaint and lovely and has all the things you need for a wonderful vacation in the North Country of New York! The location is the perfect mix of small town amenities & close proximity to the nature trails! Check out my pictures as I've included some of the trails that were just a short drive from the Inn. Very quaint motel in the middle of the mountains…read more We arrived in the early evening and was greeted warmly by the person at the front desk. The room we stayed in was very clean with a little view into the woods. Beds were comfy and the shower had good pressure. I did wish there were a desk or additional bedside tables as we quickly ran out of surface space to keep our things on. The only space available was one bedside table, a very small shelf with half of it taken by a lamp, and the top of the microwave. Nonetheless, it was a very pleasant stay and the breakfast offerings were great for those looking for a little sometime before hitting the road.

Bedrooms are simple, but nicely decorated and clean. The beds are very comfortable too! Kitchen has everything my mom needs when she's in the mood to cook, or my dad is just as quick to throw some burgers on the grill. The kids love the huge lawn that they can run around on and play games, while my favorite part is the screened in porch where I can watch the kids and the great view of the lake at the same time! Of course the view is better from the private beach and the whole family enjoys having a bonfire down there at least a few times during the week. Looking forward to next year already!

The Inn is run by a lovely couple Cheryl and John who couldn't have been more helpful. We originally reached out by email, which was respond to quickly. Then the email was followed up with phones for payment, which was extremely reasonable for this over the 4th. After speaking with them it felt like we had known them for years. The motel's office was really the owner's living quarters- basically it was a living room and bedroom with a 15-foot service counter. Between cigarette coughs, the owner checked us in and introduced us to her dog Bailey- named in honor of Bailey's Irish Cream. Yeah, that kind of set the tone. One of the prominent landmarks at the Hilltop Motel is it's 20-foot tall satellite dish that was apparently last maintained during the Carter administration. It sets new standards in the international world of paint-peeling competition. Despite the gargantuan satellite dish, the TV in the room only pulled in 5 stations, and two of them were duplicates. And as for the ambience in our room, well, let's suffice to say that it was an old-school motel room. Old showers, old windows, old everything. At least it was cheap

It's a tidy, smallish, clean room with a very comfortable bed and en suite bathroom that features a stand in shower. The decor in the room is nicely quirky and the room is in the front of the building, facing the town park, lake, and the main road through town. A window mounted air conditioner provides capable, quiet cooling. There was a bit of noise one morning as a group of motorcycles passed by but it was a minor issue. The lobby of the Inn is on the side of the building - there is an obvious sign. Check-in was handled by a gentleman named Anthony. Keys (real keys) were provided for the room and for the lobby door as the lobby was locked after hours. Anthony walked through the policies, toured the public areas of the hotel, and then a tour of the room. All of the rooms are upstairs - I don't recall seeing an elevator and the stairs are a bit narrow. There's a coffee maker in the hall for free coffee and snacks and cold beverages that are $1 each on the honor system. The Inn offers a buffet breakfast for $20. I didn't partake in the breakfast due to my dietary preferences but my traveling companions mentioned that it was a standard and satisfactory offering - eggs, bacon, sausage, pastries, cereal, tea, and coffee. The public areas are on the main level. There's a comfy, well stocked library, an interesting collection of art, a gift shop, and some outside seating. The Inn sits across the street from a town park that sits on the lake. It has a pavilion and some seating scattered about. The free Wi-Fi was always available and seemed adequate. Parking is available on the street for free. The Westport Marina is just down the hill from the Inn and includes The Galley Restaurant and Bar along with a gift shop and full service docking facilities. JAMBS on Main is a block away. It's a deli and offers a variety of fresh morning coffees along with fresh, warm pastries. I do recommend the Inn and would stay there again if my travels took me to Westport.

A couple of warnings: you are staying in a house that was built over a hundred years ago. All things considered, it's in great shape, but as of now, the exterior drastically needs a paint job. The Victorian nature of the house makes it look a little like the Psycho house. Don't give up, just go inside! However, once you are inside, you are in heaven. Karen is the nicest person you could imagine hosting a B&B. She was very excited to be sold out for a special event at the Star Trek tour. The place looks great inside (see my photos). We stayed in the Rose Room. The room was huge, with a very good bed. The bathroom is large as well. We loved everything about it, except for two small things. The jacuzzi tub does not have a shower. I did not notice this when reserving the room. Of course, a bath is fine. The only other complaint I have is that the wifi did not work in our room. It's a very big house, so I was not completely surprised. Our cell phones worked fine (Verizon). Wifi worked fine in the living room, which is also a very comfortable area. There is a flat-screen TV with Hulu in the living area (which happens to have the Star Trek episodes...). There are very large lawn areas outside the house, which would be perfect for events like wedding. I saved the best for last. The breakfasts are amazing. All home-made. In four days I put on three pounds! With my wife being vegan, we are used to getting no choice for breakfast, but she gave multiple vegan options every day we were there. KAren is really sweet and tries very hard to make everyone happy!
