I can't say enough good things about The Wine Source. When I first went in seeking a hard-to-find liqueur (which they had), I noticed the 'specialty foods' area with chocolates, fresh bread, cheeses, and meats (charcuterie) - it was the start of an obsession with the store. Bill, the cheese and meat expert, chatted with me for nearly an hour about the different cheeses and their origins/qualities. The cheese selection is enormous; the best I've seen of any local store. They even make their own fresh mozzarella in the store! Charcuterie is limited to about 10 items on a rotating basis, but it's all excellent. Meats are from Molinari, Fra' Mani, and other well-known producers. I've been back numerous times since. You can always get a free sample of any meats/cheeses, cut exactly how you want. They are not quick - they are precise and careful to give you an excellent product. The usual decline of customer service in modern times cannot be seen here - they deliver personal, knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive service to all. Any small extra price difference is well worth it. The wine selection is good, although a bit more expensive than Beltway. However, unlike Beltway, they can source unusual spirits when no one else can. Luxardo Amaretto? Check. Maraschino liqueur? Check. French fruit eau de vies? Check. Same with many others - this is my go-to place for the unusual, and if they don't have it, they'll get it. Trust me, I've tried all the other well-known ones in the area, and The Wine Source is the only one to deliver. Make sure to sign up for the email newsletter, informing you of free wine tastings (weeknights and weekends every 1 to 2 weeks), new wines, cheeses, means, and other artisanal products (such as Rick's Picks!). The free tastings are very good, offering 4-6 beverages of a highlighted or in-season drink with a complementary cheese. The staff knows their products inside and out! In short, go here. The Wine source is pretty close to where I live so I come here on occasion and they do have a nice selection of wine. I buy beer here too but the wine is really the draw. Wells is closer to where I live and i love Wells but I do like to stop by the Wine source to see if they have anything different or interesting as far as wine goes. Its also nice they have a decent selection of other liquor and some random stuff you might not find elsewhere. Coffee for instance. plus they have everything else you might need for drinking at pretty reasonable prices. If i lived in the area it would be my wine shop for sure and I like my wine. This is my FAVORITE place to buy my alcohol. They have a great selection, helpful staff and sometimes they even have wine tasting events at the store. This is also my go-to place for meat/cheese/wine night. I will buy a couple different types of meat (proscuitto, coppa etc.) and get a couple different cheeses (goat, hard) and a baguette. The meats are very thinly sliced when you order them and the cheese selection is very diverse. The olives are also very good. Great selection of wine and craft beers. They also have a lot of liquor and cheese and olives. They offer wine tastings on most weekends, which although I've never attended, my roommate speaks highly of them. There are always plenty of employees to ask to locate things and everyone is very helpful. There isn't too much parking out front (probably enough for about 5 cars), but I've never had an issue. You can try all you want, but you absolutely cannot find a single bad thing to say about The Wine Source. Their prices are close to or quite possibly the best in Baltimore. And on top of what are already great prices, they always have a great selection of items that are on sale. The selection is incredible. So this is pretty much the spot to get your booze. The selection is out of sight - all the usual stuff cheap and a few creative and hard-to-find labels. Plenty of craft beers from all over in 22oz form will ensure you're taking at least one home each time you're there (You know you want one just based on the boss label. It's okay broseph, go for it.) There's also a nice selection of artisan cheeses, and all the expected glasses, openers, and drinking accoutrements are present. This is the spot that mandates a cart. Not sure why it's called The Wine Source because the beer, liquor, and cheese selection is just as great as the wine. I'm not a wine person but I love coming here for everything else. Definitely the best selection of beer in Baltimore. (Which unfortunately isn't saying much). But snobbery aside I do appreciate all the efforts the Wine Source makes to have small single bottles, six packs, and larger bottles of a wide variety of beers. I also noticed they do growler fills which is pretty awesome! The liquor selection is also superb, I was delighted to find Rogue Gin and Bulleit Rye here. Tastings galore too! Tried a couple Spanish wines one day and the person serving them was very knowledgeable (and generous with serving size!) Haven't been to any other tastings but they always sound great from what I see online. You'd think such a gem would hike up their prices but nope! Always on par or lower than other spots which is great. Only wish it were closer to where I lived and something ran closer than the light rail that wasn't the godforsaken 27 bus. read more

I was stalking around a display of French Rosè wines taking pictures with a wine app on my phone. There were soo many options I didn't know what to choose. I live in Mount Washington which really isn't far away at all from Wine Source and I am always fulfilled with the selection and prices for the beers and wine here. That being said, there are better wine stores in the city. Not necessarily better beer stores. I really like the atmosphere, friendly staff, and accessible location. Hands down, favorite place to buy beer/wine/spirits/chocolate/coffee beans in Baltimore. A wide selection of goodies available at the store, and they're even able to place a special order if there's something you want but isn't there. They also have a rotating growler selection and weekly events held for tastings. Fantastic chocolate section with hard-to-find chocolates made in 'merica. LOVE this place. I'm delighted to have such a high quality beer, wine and spirits store in my neighborhood, especially within walking distance. I'm a big cider fan and they regularly carry both Strong Bow (UK) and J.K's Scrumpy. They also carry a great selection of beers, especially stouts. I even saw a display of Brew Dog's Tactical Nuclear Penguin, a $70 12 oz near-70 proof stout. Customer service is excellent, if busy, and very knowledgeable. Recently they helped me choose a Port as a gift for a friend. I plan to ask them for help with a tequila for a gift soon too. read more

I have to start by saying that liquor laws in Maryland are ridiculous and the cause of much shopping strife - Please feel free to join the 21st century and put alcohol in grocery stores! That being said, The Wine Source has been a wonderful source for fulfilling our boozey needs. They have a fantastic selection of beer, wine, and hard alcohol for pretty reasonable prices and I LOVE that they're open on Sundays!! The Wine Source is the great big liquor store located just off the Avenue in Hampden, which makes it desperately convenient for any number of nearby BYOB places. We happened to be there on New Year's Eve, but given the number of cash registers and staff members I gather this place is hopping on most days. The wine selection is impressive and well organized by country and style, but they also have a large beer cooler. They have a cheese case up front if you're feeling fancy or if you want to pick up some Zeke's Coffee to go with your wine. read more

This is my favorite store in Baltimore! The interior of the store is modern and gorgeous, the staff members are incredibly helpful, and the prices are just right. I was so excited when I first came here and saw that they have cheeses from a local creamery near my hometown in Northern California! They also sell delicious fresh bread and excellent coffee. They have a pretty good sale section for wines in the front right of the store. Since I'm not extremely knowledgeable about wine, I appreciate the combination of helpful staff and the addition of "no brainer" labels to some of the wines to guide customers to the right option. I very love this place. It's not convenient to my home so anytime I'm dining or shopping in Hamden I try to stop in. They have a vast assortment of bitters and cordials, so it's a great place to stock up when you want to feel like a mixologist at home. Also, the cured meat and cheese area is excellent! Possibly the west wine assortment in Baltimore city. I don't often buy my wine from here, so I'm not sure the prices but I do look around, and the selection is excellent. The store is large, spacious, and pleasant. The prices are fair, and the selection is great. If wine isn't your thing, they have an impressive beer selection and several aisles of the hard stuff. I've always received excellent service -- from the many times I've asked for advice to fit a sub-$8-a-bottle budget, to the times I've wanted to splurge on a special occasion wine, to the recent planning and delivering of several courses worth of wine for my wedding--the staff has been unfailingly courteous and helpful. I've been in to craft beer for about a dozen years. The scene has gotten packed and vicious, with doughy white drunkards canniablizing one another whenever a hot new release comes out as if they were 30 fetid rabbits crammed into a small cage. As such, I have stopped chasing rarities. It's not that I'm above it morally, or anything. Just that I moved away from the midwest and lost all my connections, and I'm too damn old and tired to go about bribing new clerks just for the privilege of buying beer. Here's an example of how bad it's gotten. Two years ago, christmastime, I stumbled into a bar in the Chicago suburbs. They had a case of Proprietor's Bourbon County Stout sitting next to a pile of raffle tickets. I'm not a betting man, but what the heck, I put ten bucks down and, hooray, I won! Only--only I didn't win a bottle. I won the opportunity to buy a bottle, for 40 bucks. Nuts to that. I mean, I paid for it, but the process just seemed dirty and exploitative. I asked the dude what the raffle money went toward, hoping it was like a charity or something, and he said "we use it to buy more beer." There was not a hint of shame or self-awareness in his voice. Anyhow, what I'm getting at is, I'm not writing as someone who has access to the "inside scoop" of where to get rare stuff around Baltimore. I'm just a regular beersman. And from that perspective, the Wine Source is easily the best spot in the city. The selection is wide and very-well curated. It leans toward local and regional beers, with a very respectable selection of European imports (getting rarer and rarer to find that, these days). They have two separate Belgian sections (abbys and wilds), with a decent rotation of beers in each. You can buy packed or growlers/crowlers, and refill prices are dirt cheap. Better than New York state, even. The package selection is very broad, but the draft selection leans toward whatever is presently popular. My only complaint is that instead of rotating some old stock, they just knock down the price. Right now I am consuming some Rouge Mocha Stout, which was very reasonably priced at 11/sixer but is clearly at least 8 months old (it tastes a little like a porter, a little like canned tomato soup). So, as always in life, you should be leery of products that seem slightly under-priced. Overall, quite good. It's impossible for me to say how good exactly, since I'm out of "the game," as it were, but from a pedestrian's vantage point it's the best you can do in Baltimore. read more

Oh Jesus. This isn't a wine store; it's a wine church devoted to Bacchus. The Wine Source is the best wine store in Baltimore in terms of selection and service. They have almost every varietal and geographic region of wine, and carry half-bottles, magnums, and imperials, which I've seen in very few wine stores. Their beer selection made me want to cry: Wine Source carries almost every SKU of Rogue, Unibroue, and Mikkeler, which I consider, in my grossly unprofessional opinion, three of the best microbreweries in North America. Their sales staff are probably some most knowledgeable I've encountered. I asked one of the hipster-looking sales staff if they had any Condrieu (a viognier from an obscure wine-growing region in the Northern Rhone Valley); she apologized that the store didn't carry any at the moment, but she offered a Chateau-Grillet as a substitute. That's ridiculous that she could answer that without referring to a winebook. I'd give the Source 5 mics, but since it's Yelp and not hip-hop, I'll settle for five stars. read more

The Wine Source is totally part of the Hampden Renaissance, having formerly been located in the Rotunda shopping center. You will find amazing beer offerings, super-helpful wine recommendations, periodic tastings, great cheese and deli meats, fresh Bonaparte breads, Kirchmeyer chocolates, gourmet choices, beer by the case, and on and on. Baltimore's best wine and beer shop and a major addition to the Avenue scene. You cannot go wrong here and you certainly will make it a regular stop if you live nearby. Everything is organized by region. I love the little section dedicated to just Maryland wines. They could use more Berrywine Plantation wines though, that stuff is tasty. Just like juice and made an hour from the city, in Mt. Airy, MD. Tons of beer, both chilled and not, and a full liquor/mixer selection (my favvv). They have computers that allow the staff (or you) to look up whatever you may be looking for and you can order it. Sweet! There is also a nice cheese & crackers selection. The girl working at the counter will let you sample any of the cheeses! Which is AWESOME!! She is incredibly knowledgeable about them too, as we had a lot of questions and asked her to suggest certain types. Everything from cow, to goat, to buffalo they have a wide range of selection. There are larger blocks to small sample size ones you can purchase. They are also open on Sunday which is awesome since, ya know, Baltimore is strange and doesn't sell alcohol on Sundays. Whomp whomp. So when you're looking for a glass of wine to wind down from weekend activities, or to ready yourself for the work week (?!) go here. read more

Amazing! You know a wine store is serious when there are grocery carts available. I love the Artists wall - for the Bohemian on a budget. They select quite a few wines to put on the wall each week and discount them to around $10. Not only affordable, but saves me time picking out a wine because it is good enough that they picked it! Don't let the name fool you, they have a great selection of beer as well. Many craft and micro brews. You can even create your own 6 pack (although it may get pricey). The cheese section is to die for as well. They have 2 certified Cheesemongers from the American Cheese Society - so cool! read more

This used to be my old liquor store when I lived in Hampden. Oh... those were the days. Tear.... another tear. Anyway, it was really sweet to have a liquor store this awesome in walking distance. Every Friday, we'd hike up the avenue, walk around the store a while and figure out what we wanted to drink that weekend. Margaritas? Vodka? Sunday Bloody Marys? (well, that was never a question...). But the selection is superb. You'd think it was an expensive kind of place because it's so nice but it's actually very decently priced. It is obvious that the ownership and staff really care about their customers. The service I have received here has been exemplary. I am a craft brewery fan and like that I can order one beer, sit in on a meeting and mix and match a few more to bring home. They are probably a little more expensive, but I am willing to pay a little more for the over-the-top service. Props to them.
