Ended up taking a stroll over to the store at lunch today to grab a few beers for some upcoming YouTube live streams,. And while the selection is still a little low for beer, the overall selection of what was chosen was pretty decent. I will say though that you still need to check dates as some were a little older than I would purchase. However, what I did price is that if you are a wine fan then you may actually fare better than that of the beer. They have a decent amount on hand and a few spirits as well, but wine seems to be their biggest play. Prices on the beers were now more comparable than my previous visit, so ours to them for getting that more in line with their competitors. Overall, it's an oaky spot for a quick pickup, parking is little though or you will overpay for the garage. So, definitely more suited for foot traffic for sure. read more

I really enjoy going to this place. It's such a convenient location for residents of the downtown/Mt Vernon. If you are driving here, parking may be a little difficult (as the surrounding streets are pay to park). There may be better locations that allow for easier accessibility via car (as I'm able to walk). The owner is very knowledgeable of the wine selections. So if there are questions, feel free to ask because there is a good selection to choose from. I do feel that the liquor selection is slightly limited (and a little over priced), but that's the price you pay for convenience. Store size is small, it's fairly clean. Things may be a little difficult to find if you're familiar with the place. Look at the labels at the start of the aisle to help navigate the various wine aisles. read more

I've been to this place a few times during my time here and every time was outstanding. After looking on Yelp for in the area liquor stores this seemed like the best option. It's located downtown on Charles and Saratoga. My first stop in here was on Thursday afternoon 5/24/12. We were in town for the annual Maryland Deathfest and definitely needed a place to stock up on drinks throughout the weekend. The place is perfect and just down the road from the venue. Once I walked in I noticed they had a lot of wine, hard liquor, and a good selection of beer. After looking through the beer I went with some Yuengling. As I was walking up to the register I grabbed a pint of whiskey but don't recall the name. The service was great here. I was in and out but fellow show goers and other shoppers had questions and the staff was knowledgeable about what they have to offer, legit. I stopped in here again Friday and Saturday. Both days were also good. I had different people helping me but they all do good and are cool. Next year I know where I'm coming back for my drinking needs. read more

I was looking for some nice whiskey as a gift for someone. I love whiskey but know nothing about it. The owner (I believe he was the owner), knew everything about the massive selection he had and really helped steer me towards the perfect choice at exactly the right price point. He recommended it so highly, I got a bottle for myself, and it might be the best thing I've ever tasted. I've never written a review for a spirits store before, but the selection was SO good, and the staff was SO friendly and knowledgeable that I really felt like I needed to. "Local Libations" is how this liquor store briefly describes itself. For a small space, the owners have managed to pack a pretty decent selection of wines and a small selection of liquors. All the staff are friendly and quick to offer suggestions if you're not sure what you're looking for. Convenient location for picking up a bottle of white on your way to Sushi Bar Geisha, just across the street. Go to their website to sign up for their mailing list, which will notify you of tastings and other goings ons. I usually get my wine at Bin 604 in Harbor East, but it was rather inconvenient as I live further west and don't have a car. I will definitely come to this store more often. read more

Urban Cellars just opened up in December in Charles Plaza across from the Super Fresh. As they describe themselves - "We are the only fine wine store in the central business district of downtown Baltimore." Stocked with international wines, hard liquor and beer they have great variety. Along with very reasonably priced wines, the staff seem to be very knowledgeable. The other cool thing is that they have wine tastings. You can tell the target audience is the striving wine connoisseur. A simpleton at wine like myself was still able to navigate the selection and pick out what seems to be a nice pinot noir. My experience was excellent and lasted under 5 minutes. We were dining at Puerto 511 and didn't realize that this was a BYOB establishment. The server gave me the business card of Urban Cellars and sent me on my way. It took 3 minutes to walk there. When I arrived I told them my situation, and they knew exactly what to do. They asked me what dishes we were ordering, and was it ceviche, I responded yes. He said that this wine is slightly sweet and that it would go well with the bite/acidity of the ceviche, and that normally he would recommend a more acidic wine but not in this case. I took the bottle, paid for it without even looking at the label, and headed back to the restaurant. Screwtop bottle which made it easly. When I opened the bag and took out the bottle, I saw that this was a Mosel Riesling from Germany. My wife and I had our 30th anniversary trip two years ago which included two magical days on the Mosel river drinking Riesling wine and soaking up the romantic, beautiful, classic, sunny atmosphere. I would return to the Mosel in a heartbeat. So this brought all those memories back. Oh and the wine was excellent and went perfectly with the ceviche. Great choice. Great wine, great service, fair price, fun atmosphere in the wine store. What more could one want? read more

Urban Cellars is right in my neighborhood so we mostly use it when we are in serious need. For the most part I like the beers they offer but I do wish they would diversify their selection. I can tell that the owners would like to but this choice is probably all about the market they serve. We've only bought one bottle of wine here and it was good - lined up well with their review of it. If you are thinking of placing the order online so it will be ready to pick up - think again! I went into their site and placed an order for 4 bottles of a specific kind of wine. I scheduled the pickup and then received two emails. One thanking me for the order, the second confirming the order and the pickup day and time. I drove into Baltimore (about a 25 minute drive) on the specified day in the specified window. I paid for parking - because there isn't anywhere downtown to park for free during the week. I walked into the store, with the confirmation email in hand. The guy behind the counter seemed surprised. He looked and me and said "we don't carry that wine any more, I no longer work with that distributor" and then he just sat down again. There was no apology, there was no offering of a substitute, no interest in keeping the business whatsoever. I asked why I would get a confirmation of the order from them, and his excuse was the perennial favorite "we are switching computer systems". (OK, full disclosure here, I'm an IT person - this excuse makes me CRAZY!) Needless to say, I left extremely unhappy and will tell anyone who listens how bad this experience was. Not only did they not have what I ordered, there was clearly no attempt to retain business or apologize. Will be interesting to see how long this attitude keeps them in business. Me? I've shopped here several times over the years. Recently, I asked the shop keeper for a recommendation on a particular wine category (Rose, Chardonnay, etc.) and they responded "I don't really drink Rose..." This has happened twice in the past year. You go to a wine shop not just for the wine but also for their expertise, which this shop is sorely lacking. I wonder if the management has changed, because when I went here a few years back I had a great experience and the people who worked here seemed very knowledgeable. It's a shame for this shop, because there are other small wine shops within a 1-mile radius that I now frequent. read more

Urban Cellars was a relatively recent addition to the downtown area of Baltimore, and personally the best part is being so close to the local grocery store too. The proximity allows those of us who aren't used not having booze in the grocery store to get a bottle of wine/case of beer conveniently. While the prices are a little higher than other liquor stores in the "ghettoer" areas of town, it's well worth it given it's location and its clean appearance. I live close to this place so I've been several times. They never cease to satisfy me no matter what I'm looking for. Just the other day I brought two miniature sky vodka bottles and some OJ for $1.60 each. They also have great wine selections. You can find the cheap stuff for $10 a bottle (usually the way I go) but they also have the more fancy expensive bottles too. So convenient. They have EVERYTHING in such a small space, even liqueurs to make special cocktails or drink straight. The wine and craft beer selection is vast and when in doubt, always ask for a recommendation because they really know their stuff. I went here as I was visiting Baltimore for a training. Great display and selection of wines. However, signs for wine selection were very difficult to read-too small and writing was dark against dark interior design. I saw a lot of high end priced wines with little option for accessing name brands that I was familiar with like Barefoot, Naked Wine, or Skinny Girl Wine. As, I enter the guy at the register who was Oriental ( i don't' know if he is Chinese, Korean, Japanese) did not greet me when i entered. This shop has a very knowledgeable staff which comes in handy when there are so many wines to choose from. UC has a great location to me being right in the middle of so many businesses and residents I'm sure people take advantage of having a classy looking, cleanly run establishment to purchase liquor from as oppose to the rundown eye sores that plague the city. Also great to have room to come in and get a good look at what you may or may not want before you buy it.
