Went for the first time yesterday and oh my!! It's so yummy and FRESH! I was pleasantly surprised to see they had tofu! I was expecting to eat beans or veggies so lots of points for that! I got the tofu burrito but do wish their signing was better. I didn't see another sign (far away from the menu) that they also did bowls! I always prefer bowls because I get full fast and eating a whole burrito gets me stuffed! I do agree with another reviewer that they included a lot of rice but it was yummy. I am definitely looking forward to eating from TWE again! I do wish their dining area was open though. That was a bit of a bummer. There was a sign that their AC wasn't working which is even worse for them! I hope that gets fixed soon. And with COVID and all, I totally understand the hesitance in having people eat in. read more

Not necessarily a dine in environment or atmosphere, but the option is definitely available. If you just want to grab a seat quick during lunch or have something super casual, there are tables available and a small dining room. Typically they are not, the takeout orders are very busy. I would expect a 10 to 25 minute depending on your order and the time of day/day of the week. They have tons of options, basically every meat choice that you can think of, and I believe some vegetarian options, including tofu. They have tacos, burritos, enchiladas, salads, bowls, soup, and more! I believe they also offer a Tres leches cake as a dessert option! I usually order a chicken burrito with fajita veggies and sour cream and salsa and I have never been unhappy, that I can recall! The burrito is a good size and they load it up pretty decently with the toppings... everything goes well together! I think given today's prices and inflation, they are priced pretty normally compared to others in the area however, I still think that $18 for a burrito without any chips or salsa or crazy additions is a bit astronomical. I guess that's just where we're at, and not their fault, especially if they are using quality and fresh and ingredients! read more

We were looking forward to this, and it so underdelivered. The staff was friendly, and that's as positive as this review will get. Our food was expensive for the subpar quality: paper plates and plasticware should have tipped us off. The chips, guacamole and salsa were obviously shipped in from a factory (the guacamole was more yellow than green, and no flavor). My daughter got a beef/black bean quesadilla that tasted like dog food. My burrito was loaded with dry rice and limp lettuce. My wife's enchilada didn't even arrive warm. It was enchilada ingredients with shredded cheese that hadn't quite melted. All for nearly $40. The Whole Enchilada has been renamed by our family to "the Enchilada Hole." Chipotle is better quality and Taco Bell is cheaper, and both are better. read more

This place has half-decent food but is grossly overpriced, especially relative to what you get. Most burritos are around $7, and guacamole costs almost a dollar extra. The quality of the food is passable but not outstanding. It markets itself as "healthy" but everything is too salty. The portions, however, are quite small. A $7 burrito here will not fill up a person with even a moderate appetite. There are no sizes; you can't get a larger one if you want more or a smaller one if you want less. The style of the food is not very authentic; the only shred of authenticity is the hot tomatillo sauce available in a squeeze-tube on the side. The variety is also lacking; there aren't that many choices and in my opinion, the choices available aren't exactly the most exciting or tasty ones. The atmosphere? It's a hole in the wall with a few tables barely big enough to seat two comfortably, and a very narrow line of bar-style seats up against the wall. Passable decor and half-decent music. But I can't figure out what you're paying for. The bottom line is that this is a fast-food burrito place with substantially jacked up prices. There are a lot worse restaurants out there, but I'd still recommend avoiding this one. Ethnic food in Guilford is, almost always, disappointing. Everything is toned down. Whether that's to accomodate unadventuraous palates or because of lack of skill in the kitchen, the bottom line is that you're not going to find really good Mexican, Thai, Chinese, etc., here. Hope you like eating with bugs, bathrooms, and the lights off. The dining room has chairs piled in the corner and that thing in the darkness.... Yeah that's a toilet. The bathrooms face the dining room and the doors are always left open. Did I mention the dirt. The food itself is hit or miss. I have had a good burrito there, but recently it's mostly just undercooked rice and diced tomatoes. Also that good taste only comes if you are able to overpower the skepticism that comes with the atmosphere. Oh, and don't bother reading the menu. I grew up in Southern California and have been all over the Southwest. I love Cal-Mex and Tex-Mex, and I keep hoping to find a decent place for this type of food in Connecticut. Sadly, I'm still searching. This place serves bland, non-Mex burritos and enchiladas, along with completely unrelated foods. Yup, call it Connecticut-Mex. You won't find anything close to whatever - Mex you crave. Even the chips and salsa are bland. I don't know how this small chain can survive. My grandmother brought home this ranchero chicken burrito salad late last night for me. I figured I'd give it a try before a went to bed. I took one little but and let me tell you, I was thinking about it for the rest of the night. The next morning it took all of my willpower to wait until lunch to eat it. It wasn't like any Mexican salad thing I'd ever had. It was like an open burrito. It had everything in the ranchero chicken burrito layered on top of a tortilla with some lettuce (not overwhelming lettuce. Just the right amount). My husband and I have been loyal customers to the Guilford and North Branford locations for years. We go in at least twice a month. Today my husband ordered salads that were made incorrectly. When he got home with them I decided to go back to get the correct order. After driving 15 minutes back, the woman in the Guilford location was rude and refused to correct the order. I don't know if they were ordered incorrectly or if there was a miscommunication, that's neither here nor there. I've worked in several restaurants and I can't imagine refusing to fix an order! She would rather lose our business than fix 2 salads. There are too many great restaurants on the shoreline who bend over backwards for their customers to be treated this way. We will NEVER bring our business back to the The Whole Enchilada. It's overpriced anyway. Good riddance read more

They just started $5 burrito specials, which is totally worth it. Otherwise I probably wouldn't spend the normal $7 when there is so much burrito competition in the area! The burritos are pretty tasty and not at all bland (try the curry chicken burrito!). If you are getting takeout from here, ask for chips (free, but they don't usually include them unless you ask) and make sure you take plenty of salsa with you. read more

We were craving some Mexican food last night and decided to give the Whole Enchilada a try .. even after some not so stellar reviews from my dad and other Yelpers. We tried to call to place an order for pick up, but got the answering machine: "can't come to the phone right now". Well, that seemed positive, they were too busy serving delicious authentic comidas to customers to come to the phone. So we showed up - hmmm - they were open but not a customer in sight. My wife ordered the burrito salad with black beans, I got the soft chicken tacos. She reported that she was hungry enough so she ate it. My tacos were a bit bland. Chicken didn't have too much flavor, and the salsa also was quite plain. The lettuce was nice and fresh and crispy! Some sour cream would have been a nice touch - I don't remember that being offered as an option. Overall, our food wasn't terrible, but I've had much better, more authentic and more flavorful Mexican dishes. The service was nice and friendly. My advice for this place: spice it up a bit amigos! read more

I've been here I would say at least a dozen times in the last two years. They've been very very good. However the last two times I've been there it's been downhill. I'm not sure if its due to opening another location maybe the people who usually work here went to that location or different workers in general. I'm not even sure if it's this location I never pick up the food someone else does but the point is it's the same owners in the same chain if you will restaurant. They always forget the cheese on my beef burrito even though we always request/ remind them. 2 weeks ago on a Thurs. asked for sour cream on the side & they put 8 lbs. of it on I do like a lot of sour cream but not that much. The rice had no flavor / seasonings & they didn't put any sauce on it no tomatoes & hardly any black beans. I ate 1/2 of 1/2 & gave the rest to my father who will eat anything & everything. So this past Saturday they ordered again since they are always in the area. The sour cream was on the side this time. However again NO CHEESE & the rice no seasoning no flavor. No salsa or tomatoes whatsoever tons of lettuce which I didn't even think was on there. Hardly any black beans. I ate 1/2 & wrapped other 1/2 in foil put in fridge. About 2-3 hours later I got a little hungry so I heated it up in the microwave. I cut it up in 8 only half of that and started to not feel well so I threw out the rest. Then i ended up getting sick! So pretty much I think I'm done with them! My mother was fine she gets the vegetarian vegetable thing which is not really my thing. My father has a stomach of steel. I'm actually better off eating Taco Bell I go to the one in Branford every now and then and so far everything to me correctly and I've never gotten sick and I am NOT a fast food restaurant eater. I'm very disappointed because in the beginning they were very good I was excited that there was a good Mexican restaurant with decent food and now I'm going to have to find another one. We like to support local stores and restaurants in Guildford and rarely have anything negative to say about any of them. However, I have given the Whole Enchilada more than enough chances to impress us, each and ever time we return they seams to get worse. Ordered some take out this week to enjoy with our friends. Simple stuff like Nacos and burritos were the worst I've ever had. If 4 people had the same opinion then that a consensus. The nachos were soggy and didn't even include salsa or guacamole( that's extra$) Their Beef Burritos were mostly rice and beans and had no flavor. This place should be ashamed of their food quality. Beyond that, their prices are EXTREMELY HIGH especially for crappy food. They don't seam to care either. NEVER AGAIN!!!!! read more

I'll start by saying I gave it 4 stars based on it being a fast food restaurant which it is. All the other reviews said it was dark in the bathrooms were dirty I found it to be just the opposite. The food here is very good, with a good variety of choices. They cook it quickly when you order, and the prices are reasonable. The ambiance is that of a quick, casual restaurant, not a sit down waiter service place. It is clean and the staff are friendly. I would say my only "negative" would be that because they strive to be healthier, they don't use the heavy ingredients that you normally find in Mexican food.
