I'm A nod to the rural TX farming and railway that represents east TX. Decor includes broken down tractors, votives surrounded by barbed wire (all fake- no safety concerns), an old pickup, and tons of plants like fiddle leaf figs and pothos. I noticed there is a lip on the front door so don't trip- the travel path can be challenging for those with mobility impairment whether that be a wheelchair user or someone who shuffles their feet (as many clientele in the area). Likewise the lighting is pretty and dramatic but limited in several areas where there are steps and the accessible parking isn't too identifiable at night (to the left of the entrance). Just be careful. For hearing impaired folks, it was a bit loud at 7:30 for conversations but by 8:20 it was noticeably quieter if hearing aids were needed to discern tabletop discussions. I added myself to a yelp waitlist but this wasn't mentioned. But the wait wasn't too bad. There was a family of 8 ahead of me that seemed to throw the hostess for a serious loop. She put together a table which they immediately rejected, asked for another that containing a reserved placard then a third. In between she came back to the stand and looked at me inquisitively - so I asked for a table for one- but then she said it would be a minute. I got the "table for one" treatment- offer for a less comfortable high top in what the bar area- and then I thought we were headed to that 2 top by the bathroom every restaurant dooms single diners with, but was pleasantly surprised to be offered a 4 top. The menu reflected what was on their website- always a good sign. But the waitress was not able to handle the volume. I waited 10 minutes before even being greeted. When she did come by to say she'd be right with me, I could hear a nearby table asking for a pen to pay a check after a wait and another table she had served beverages seemed to be a little irked they hadn't gotten a ticket yet so I figured it best to adjust my ordering accordingly. The fried green tomatoes were a perfect temperature- this can often be a challenge to have them still hot but not scald your tongue prior to the rest of a meal. I think thinner slices help achieve this. Coated in cornmeal not flour mixture made it a challenge to stay on, but the homemade ranch is perfect and makes up for any pieces you fish out. The tuna tataki is approachable- wise choice for an area that is less likely to have a palette looking for wild combinations. I'd feel comfortable introducing someone to tuna with this dish. The concept of tortilla chip with seared tuna (possibly ahi) with crispy fried onion strings and grilled bell peppers and a bit of ponzu sauce is great but swimming in ponzu, the tortilla chips were not strong enough to hold the tuna and their being heavily pre salted really made the whole dish way too salty. I'd love to see this reconfigured with unsalted tortillas cut in half and fried, just a drizzle of the ponzu sauce, and keep the onions and peppers. the grilled peppers adding that smokey flavor really could shine then. And to be clear that was the stand out detail- would love to see more of that combo. For the entree I went with a grilled salmon since I've had two NY strips in Chicago this week. The salmon was definitely fishy so not as fresh, but the jalapeño compound butter really helped cover this so I'd recommend opting for that over an herb butter. The grilled asparagus is a little oily but grateful for a vegetable that wasn't frozen and heated. The Parmesan on top adds a good bit of flavor but again watch out for salt blindness. I would normally say how can you mess up a loaded baked potato but actually I had a terrible twice baked one at a stupid expensive steakhouse this week. They did not scrimp on the toppings- every bite could come with a bit of cheese, sour cream, chives, and real crumbled bacon. Frankly this was the type of potato you think of when you think of home. Solid. Now the tea. This was what I was most curious about given the city of Trinidad has notoriously bad (safety has even been questioned) water. The restaurant has invested in a filtration system and promoted it online. To be honest one of the main reasons I was convinced to try the place. There is a lingering taste that it's been processed but nothing I would reject and the peace of mind frankly would keep me coming back. Now my tea glass could have been refilled more often (ran empty twice), but in this instance, that's a testament to water being drinkable. For service I would say they were a little overwhelmed as tables nearby were left unbussed, but the food was never cold and was served very timely so they have that down. I also want to acknowledge the guy at the table next to me was blowing his nose loudly and incessantly using the restaurant napkin so my heart truly goes out to that staff having to deal with that. Best place around Cedar Creek. Always good food, reasonably priced, except for specials - which are a bit expensive. Enjoy the live music, which used to be every weekend but now is sporadic, so check the events page. My only complaint, which I have personally expressed to the staff there on several occasions, wish they would expand wine list. Only 1 Chardonnay available, always hoping for at least one other, less $ option. What about just a good 'ol' house wine even? read more

Great New stop in Trinidad. Small menu but they execute well. Awesome ambiance and quite frankly one of only 2 decent places to eat within 30 minutes. As has been mentioned in other reviews they do have some execution issues with being out of ingredients and wait times (more waiting for food and drinks now more than waiting to be seated). I choose to rate them positive because I want them to continue working these issues out and to succeed. Felt like they might finally be hitting their stride as a consistent dinner option, but our most recent experience would suggest not. New fall menu. Ok. But it's not a Michelin restaurant. Can't they just keep the items on the menu that people like? It's cedar creek lake for goodness sake. Seated right by the live music after specifically requesting to be seated at one of the several open tables further away. The hostess just shrugged her shoulders and said "Sorry". And the wait staff? I made a reservation for 9 people. I confirmed that morning the reservation was good to go but when I arrived, they only had 6 settings, then pulled up 3 extra chairs so we were all crammed together. There were extra tables that were available around us, but when we asked to have a table added onto our table, the management said no that they couldn't. The hostess was precious, and I felt bad for her under that management. The waiter was great, good attitude. Honestly, the restaurant was nicely decorated. They had live music-- not too loud or obnoxious. She was actually a good singer. The food was good. I just couldn't get over the fact that we had reservations and they weren't willing to reserve the appropriate amount of seats for us. If it's too big don't take the reservation and then they weren't even apologetic about it whenever we addressed it with them. Didn't get any extra seats- they could've moved a table. No apology. We will consider going back when weather is cooler & we can sit outside & just order an appetizer. Our first experience (on our 39th anniversary) was a nightmare. Horrible service. We ordered fish. 1hr 30 minutes later we got fish which was not close to being even warm. My husband took 1 bite & pushed his away. I tried 2 tiny bites. It tasted funny so I was done. We had shared the wedge salad. It was just OK & we were hungry so we ate most of it. They didn't seem concerned, but removed charges. This next day I was sick for most of the day. Don't think I ate enough fish for it to be the culprit. Lettuce and dressings can also make me I'll if they are tainted. Ambiance is very nice and the place was packed. Our fault for making reservation at 4:00 (next available was 8:00) BUT they did not explain on phone it would be lunch menu. We were NOT told between 4:30 and 5:00 you can only order appetizers and salad. We ordered soup and salads and the very nice waitress came back and told us we could not get the soup. Keep In mind - restaurant was pretty empty of customers. We told them we'd like to just pay for the drinks we ordered and the appetizers we had eaten. They charged us for the soup (which they came back saying we couldn't order) and salads we ordered but did not eat. Sorry, Whistestop. My husband and I decided to try this place out for dinner. If you don't have a reservation you are pretty much treated like a 2nd class citizen. The waitress handed us our menus and told us to find a seat at the bar. Neither bartender on staff greeted us or even acknowledged we were there. I finally asked one of them if we could get something to drink and place an order. We pretty much felt like an inconvenience the whole time we were there.
