Great New stop in Trinidad. Small menu but they execute well. Awesome ambiance and quite frankly one of only 2 decent places to eat within 30 minutes. As has been mentioned in other reviews they do have some execution issues with being out of ingredients and wait times (more waiting for food and drinks now more than waiting to be seated). I choose to rate them positive because I want them to continue working these issues out and to succeed. There are not other options nearby and if they work on their issues this can be a local gem.

    Making memories...priceless!!!

This place is a dreamboat and so are the people that work here. As the eloquent Billy Bob quote goes, "A ten.. a fu*king ten."

The Whistle Stop was a must visit on our recent Texas visit. The service was great, food outstanding and the ambiance was cool and comfortable. Sampled a wedge salad, chicken fried chicken and the steak. All were great and well prepared. Every night has a different special, Thursday night was seafood.

Service was nonexistent and they blamed the kitchen. Even the slow drinks were blamed on the kitchen. ‍

There were overhead heaters around the outside bar but somewhat strangely the door to the main building was kept open and there was no heat inside. Our waitress wore a puffer jacket both inside and outside. Brrrr. When the waitress came around to take our orders, since I had never been here before, I asked her what was the best thing they did, what was their standout menu item. She didn't have an answer and seemed confused. Then she walked across the room and pulled something off the wall and came back to our table. She said these are our specials and proceeded to run down them. Ok, weird since why wouldn't they always go through the specials, and this is also not what I asked. So I asked her again in a different way, what are they known for. She was still confused and then just ran through the regular menu items. Ok, so absolutely no useful guidance on the menu and their food. Anyways, I ordered the steak frites, medium. It came out with absolutely no sear and was rare. Additionally the cut was very fatty, with large chunks of fat on each piece of meat. Yuck. The lady had the 456 cheeseburger and said it was delish. Rating edit: Downgraded from 2 to 1 stars after a nasty case of food poisoning started the next day.

I had the carbonara, and honestly, it was almost too pretty to eat. The service was a little slow, but it actually gave us time to soak in the atmosphere and admire how beautiful the restaurant is inside. The vibe? Absolutely check. The cocktails were not our favorite, but that definitely won't stop us from coming back to try other drinks on the menu. What makes this place even more special is that it's a true mom-and-pop restaurant sourcing food locally. You really can't beat that. Supporting local while getting an amazing meal is always a win.

Pink and honest in the middle, warm and willing, bread holding it all together like a good road holding a long drive. Nothing flashy, nothing trying too hard just flavor that knew where it came from and didn't apologize. The arugula salad came sharp and clean, green with intent, that bitter edge that wakes you up a little and reminds you you're still alive. It wasn't there to impress you. It was there to balance things out, like a deep breath between sentences. I drank Earl Grey tea, steam rising slow, bergamot drifting up like memory, like train smoke somewhere far off. It felt right. The kind of tea you drink when you're not rushing anywhere, when the world can spin without you for a moment and that's okay. Fern in the Wild isn't trying to reinvent eating. It's doing something better. It's paying attention. To ingredients. To pace. To the quiet pleasure of a meal done right. I left feeling fed in more ways than one--like I'd stopped long enough to hear myself think. That's rare. That's worth something. I'll be back.

My friend and my girlfriend both ordered their espresso martini that my friend claimed was the best espresso martini in town, while I got the bartender's recommendation of the Animal Style, a pineapple and jalapeño infused tequila with strawberries, cardamom bitters, and a lemon peel garnish. Normally, I hate any drink that is spicy. I cannot stand a Bloody Mary because I don't believe drinks should be allowed to be spicy, but this one, for having jalapeño, is not spicy at all. If anything, it's slightly savory with its tropical flavor. The bartender was great. They have appetizers and tapas as well and as my girlfriend sat down, she really wanted just one of their fresh oysters. I ordered her just one to try and it was $4.25. They gave us the smallest one they could find. The tiniest oyster of all time. I guess size really didn't matter because according to her it was very good. I would go back and have a few more cocktails, but it is a nice place to hang out on the square on a Friday night. A good time to be had by all. RIYL: The finest, most $15ish cocktail you can find.
