Sometimes you just have to do a thing. For years my bride has been talking about making the pilgrimage to the Whistle Stop Cafe. Not months. Not weeks. Years. And after enough years pass, a man learns there are only two choices: take the trip or hear about the trip that never happened until the end of time. So we did a thing. The cafe sat there like it had been waiting on us since 1957. The kind of place that reminds you of all those little Southern towns that somehow survive despite progress doing its level best to pave over every memory worth keeping. Inside, the food was everything we'd hoped for and then some. The Bennett Bar-B-Que was worthy of its reputation, the fried green tomatoes were exactly what fried green tomatoes ought to be, and the peach cobbler should probably require a note from your doctor before ordering. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, which is something my grandmother never imagined would be written in a sentence about Southern cooking, but here we are. The wait staff were genuine, quick with a smile, and blessed with that rare Southern talent of making you feel like a regular customer even when they know full well they've never seen you before in their lives. The atmosphere smelled of coffee, history, laughter, and a thousand conversations that probably started with, "Y'all ain't gonna believe what happened..." Naturally, after lunch we had to walk around town. Partly because that's what you're supposed to do in a place like that, and partly because the peach cobbler had shifted our center of gravity. We wandered the streets, admired the old buildings, and soaked in the kind of small-town Southern charm that doesn't come from a committee meeting or a tourism brochure. It comes from years of people living their lives in the same place and caring enough not to ruin it. Sometimes life doesn't require a grand adventure. Sometimes all it takes is listening to your wife, driving down a country road, eating too much cobbler, and spending an afternoon in a town that reminds you where you came from. Whistle Stop Café Today we visited the iconic Whistle Stop Café in Juliette, Georgia, the town made famous by the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. The drive from Social Circle takes less than an hour, but once you arrive it feels like you've stepped into another era. Juliette is a tiny town with only a handful of buildings, many of them antique stores, gift shops, and historic structures. The railroad still runs directly through town, and trains remain very much a part of daily life. The café opens at 11:00 a.m., and it was immediately obvious that this is a popular destination. We signed the waiting list at 11:47 a.m. and were seated around 1:30 p.m. Even more impressive, when we left around 3:00 p.m., there were still approximately a dozen groups waiting for tables. Considering the restaurant is only open Thursday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., that says a lot about its popularity. Fortunately, waiting in Juliette is part of the experience. During the wait, we explored the town, visited the shops, and watched four trains roll through on the tracks beside the restaurant. Around here, wait times can almost be measured in trains instead of minutes. Juliette itself is worth exploring. The old mill building still stands beside the railroad tracks and serves as a reminder of the town's history. There are antique stores, souvenir shops, movie memorabilia, the Juliette Opry stage, a small courthouse building, and even a decorative outhouse humorously labeled "Juliette Police Department." One old pickup truck parked in town featured a skeleton behind the wheel, creating one of the more memorable photo opportunities of the day. Inside, the Whistle Stop Café feels exactly like the kind of place you hope to find in a town like this. Historic photographs, vintage signs, railroad memorabilia, and Fried Green Tomatoes movie memorabilia cover the walls. Nothing feels manufactured or staged. It feels authentic, comfortable, and connected to the history of both the town and the film. Our server, Chris, was friendly, attentive, and welcoming despite the busy dining room. One of the more interesting details involved the booth where we were seated. According to the story shared at the restaurant, the booth is associated with one of the memorable scenes from Fried Green Tomatoes, including the famous barbecue discussion and the line, "That's the best barbecue I ever had." For lunch, I ordered the blackened catfish special. Alongside it were collard greens, cornbread, and one of the most unusual side dishes I've encountered in quite some time: Brussels sprouts prepared with cinnamon and brown sugar. It may sound unusual, but the sweet and savory combination worked surprisingly well and made the Brussels sprouts one of the most memorable parts of the meal. The homemade lemonade fit perfectly with the Southern atmosphere of the restaurant. The café had temporarily run out and was making a fresh batch while we were there. We also learned that the popular seven-layer lemon cake had already sold out for the day, which wasn't surprising considering the crowds. What makes Whistle Stop Café special is that the experience extends far beyond the food. The active railroad, the historic buildings, the movie connections, the quirky attractions, and the welcoming atmosphere all combine to create something unique. This is not simply a restaurant. It is a destination. Between the trains, the historic town, the movie memorabilia, the old mill, the skeleton in the truck, the packed dining room, and the Southern atmosphere, we ended up spending much of the afternoon exploring Juliette rather than simply stopping for lunch. The food was good, the service was friendly, and the setting was unlike anywhere else we've visited. Sometimes a restaurant review is mostly about the meal. A small place in an out of the way location in Juliette, Georgia where the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was made, so a tourist stop for sure, but man was the food and service good when we recently went there. The service by our friendly and funny waitress Beth was top notch. We went early , getting there 15 minutes before they opened at 11. There were already a dozen folks waiting on the porch already! They had a sign in sheet by the door so there was no rush or guessing when to go in as they called parties from the list. The dining rooms is not big and there are lots of antiques and movie posters on the walls. You really felt you were back in a restaurant decades ago. The train tracks are right beside The Whistle Stop so the name is appropriate. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were great with the somewhat spicy remoulade sauce they came with. I then had the pork chops and my wife had the chopped steak. Both were good. The veggies we saw all looked good. The Brussels sprouts were roasted with sugar I think as they were sweet. The mashed potatoes were good the turnip greens were just OK as was the cornbread. Our total bill, for two lunches and 2 teas was about $55. We got a sampler platter that consisted of some fried green tomatoes, onion rings, fried okra, and chicken fingers. The sampler is big enough for two people. The service is excellent. Once you get inside our waitress named Nicole made the experience all worthwhile. All the other people that work there were very helpful and very nice as well. The ambience is overwhelming right online with the movie. Lotta antiques small town wonder. Next to the rail line. Air-conditioning and fans are not excessive so your heat sensitive don't go in August cause it's gonna be hot. We comes from Central Florida so we're used to the heat, but it was not as humid as we have it at our place, so it was comfortable to me. Can't say enough about Nicole. She was very nice. We wanted for nothing. She was always there with a smile and took good care of us. So I finally made it to the famous "The Whistle Stop Cafe" but unfortunately due to my travel plans I arrived at ten minutes after 4 PM and they close at 4 PM and i found it to be locked up tight although I could hear the pots and pans clanging as the kitchen staff was cleaning up. I was able to walk around the property and snapped a few pictures but it was still a little disappointing being I may never be this close to this historic site again. The production designer for the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" selected this location which has no connection to the fictional book, this building chosen to be the Whistle Stop Café was formerly an antique and hardware store. It was redesigned as a cafe, with a horseshoe-shaped counter to allow for optimal camera angles, with the success of the movie it has become somewhat of a roadside attraction. Set as the iconic café in the movie, the Whistle Stop Café got its humble start in the little town of Juliette, Georgia. When filming was done, the restaurant remained open and still serves classic southern dishes and of course, Fried Green Tomatoes, everyday! They are open Thursday - Monday, 11a-4p. Because of the movie, I looked this place up recently when we traveled north to the mountains. It was a small departure from our route but we left FULL. The food was amazing!!! Good home cooking. The fried green tomatoes were actually very delicious, and I also ordered a burger with potato chips as well... All cooked well done! It's as friendly southern as their delicious fried food. It's in an antique building with great vibes. The people are friendly and they immediately ask if you're ordering the fried green tomatoes. We even found Smoky Lonesome's cabin! The food is VERY good with TONS of choices. The list of available side dishes fills a giant blackboard over the counter. Portions were generous. I live in Warner Robins, ga, and I drove my family all the way to the Whistle Stop Cafe for my mother in laws birthday. I completely wasted my time. I have a baby around 7 months old. Not only did the seater skip my family three times, she was incredibly rude about it. Mind you the restaurant is practically right on top of a rail road where trains come and go consistently. Once we were seated, my baby was talking, kinda a high pitched squeal. He was so happy seeing all the new things. Our waiter was super sweet, he catered to us and my happy child the entire visit. But I had a cook, come all the way out of the kitchen and bend down into my face to tell me to , hush my child. Later through the visit, the same lady shouted another rude comment about my child. I really loved the sweet little town. It was so cute how we could just walk around and feel the quaintness of things. As far as the actual restaurant, there was really only one employee who had a great attitude. Everyone else just seemed so stressed that they couldn't really be friendly. I'm from the south so I was surprised by that... the restaurant decor and vibe was so adorable and on point to really remind us of the movie and memories. The menu was good. I had the bbq, green beans and butter beans... it was ok. The meat was the best part of my meal. The bread we got was super dry... the green beans were not flavorful and the butter beans were ok. Mom had country fried steak. It was very good. The gravy was tasty. The collards were good but not flavorful. Okra was decent. Fried green tomatoes looked like they weren't good but ended up tasting great. We also had the buttermilk pie which was decent as well. I was surprised with the level of service, I expected it to be better. And the food quality I also had an expectation for it to be better than it ended up being. Everyone should make a stop here and check out all the shops on the street. Wait was about 20minutes, as it's a smaller place. Heard that the wait can be as high as 2 hours - but if that's the case, just go shopping in the meantime! It's not hot inside and I love the atmosphere. The staff are so sweet and attentive. The fried green tomatoes were absolutely delicious (and I'm not even a fan of tomatoes). I also ordered the Powerman's Burger and it was easily one of the best burgers I have EVER had. On June 4th, I decided to take my mother to the Whistle Stop Cafe for her birthday. Really wanted my mother to have a great birthday & with an experience at the Whistle Stop on her special day. Also had my Sister-in-law & her four kids with me as well. We signed the book at 1:07pm.. They called two families that showed up after us to come dine in before us. We didn't get called in to eat until 3:20pm. We sat out in the heat for two plus hours with four kids. Finally when we get called in & have a seat. The owner Elizabeth Bryant starts yelling from the kitchen to shut that baby up. She yelled that baby needs something. She came from the back kitchen with a bowl of mashed potatoes & told my sister-in-law that she needed to feed her baby & shut her baby up. She said, that she has someone (Jacinda Bryant) in her kitchen that has seizures & can't listen to baby scream. At the same time she is telling us to shut our baby up. There was a train going by that was super loud. She went back to the kitchen. A few minutes went by while waiting for the food. Then more yelling from he kitchen window started. The owner Elizabeth Bryant started yelling "Shut that baby up" at least three times for the whole restaurant to hear. The baby was in a happy mood & never cried once. She totally embarrassed us & ruined our experience for our first time. I will say the food was good but very expensive. The services that we received from our waiter was excellent, he was man. This has been a jewel in a bucket list for some time now. I am definitely a fan of context... so, for me to JUST review the food, service and atmosphere would be to short change this journey. I will not do that! The first leg of the journey had us shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Locust Grove, Georgia (awesome name for a town I must say). Which will be a different review. Back to the fascination of the Whistle Stop Cafe. If you know or appreciate anything about the movie Fried Green Tomatoes and its historical classic story, you'll love this cafe! The first impression was, that we took a step back through time, our first step out of our vehicle and onto the main road in Juliette, Georgia! The small road in is walkable and surreal. There are gift shops on one side, on the other, the Old Train depot. The Cafe itself overlooks the Train tracks that take you further back into the 19th Century. Your footsteps make hard noises on the wide front porch to the Cafe. There is a sign in sheet, whereby the waitresses would come out and fetch ya, when a table or booth was cleared. We encountered two couples leaving after having lunch and both greeted us with smiles and How y'all doing? And we done ate all the food jokingly. Southern charm on full display, it isn't dead. We could not wait to enter the Cafe from 1882. Chris, " short for Christine", our waitress sat us in a booth with a " get in on there and I'll get you in on the other side" , loved it. It is a given that we would have Fried Green Tomatoes as an appetizer. So, bam, hot out of the frying pan and de-freakin-liscious! Our meals included the Fried chicken tenders, just enough pepper to give them a punch and the classic macho cheeseburger. With sides of fries, coleslaw, rutabaga and cornbread of which I have never tasted their equal!! For dessert, and oh they have dessert, a blackberry cream cake with whipped cream. To say the experience was all we could ask for and more would be too few words. Our lunch ended with a most amazing conversation with Chris, short for Christine, our waitress and now friend. Chris spoke of the flood of '94 and what all the town went through. Her family history and their state of sheer happiness in comfort there in Juliette, Georgia in Monroe County. Her family are close knit and all live within a well worn path that connects their homes. She told us stories that painted a picture of a better...vanished time. So, the food is amazing, you could not find a more friendlier atmosphere and way affordable. Yet, the experience of it all was more deeply stirring to my blood than any imagining could ever bring!! Just as I expected. Excellent food in a quaint little diner. We of course started with a basket of fried green tomatoes that neither of us had ever tried. They were delicious and the dip had a nice kick to it. We both ordered Bennett's BBQ sandwich and it comes without Bennett's BBQ sauce so you can add as much as you want as needed. I tasted the BBQ and it was already spicy but I added the sauce to it anyway and it's delicious both ways. I got onion rings and my wife got fries. Both were really good. I loved the movie Fried Green Tomatoes so it was neat eating at the place a lot of it was filmed at. It's a nice area. The cafe is a sweet looking spot. We ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes for an appetizer. They were delicious. For lunch I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and squash casserole. I loved it all except it could have been warmer. The squash casserole was my favorite. My husband ordered a cheeseburger and chips. He liked it a lot. The servers and the kitchen staff do a very nice job of taking care of folks and each server can tell you their favorite dish of the cafe. It ain't like Ruth and Idgie, and it ain't like it was with the previous owner. I used to go to the Whistle Stop regularly, and it was always a nice experience - good food, ample portions, and good service. I moved to North GA, but had to go to Macon today, so I stopped to get a veggie plate. Make sure you check your order because this is an example of what I got - and paid a high price for it. What you see in the three containers is a comparison to demonstrate what I paid $6.95 plus tax for - the middle container of black eyed peas. When I ordered the peas, I was told that they were only selling the crocks - that I could not add them to my order as an individual serving. When I saw the container was barely half full after I left, I called the restaurant. The lady told me I had ordered an individual order, and I told her that I had ordered the crock, and that it was a pint - and only half full. Then, she claimed it was a quart (I have it staged by a quart), and that it was full because she had filled it. I asked for a half refund, and she said, "You ain't getting no refund - and you can suck on it." I told her I would call the owner and get my credit card company to issue a refund. She said, "Good luck with that because the owner is our mama." On the plate, there were plenty of apples, but as you see, the other veggies did not even cover the bottom of the plate. Truth is, they were running out (erased the choice after I ordered) and gave me what was left and charged me $14.50 for this plate. The peas were supposed to be peas and onions, but it was peas and bacon. I can't eat bacon. This place is about making money off the movie name, and as the young woman demonstrated, they could care less about their product or service because people will come because of the name - and they can just tell people to "suck on it" if they don't like it. If you are a fan of the movie , "Fried Green Tomatoes" then a stop at the film's Whistle Stop Cafe is an absolute must! The small town of Juliette, Georgia is home to some of the original set from the 90s flick and here you can walk the same streets as the film's main characters and dine at the same Whistle Stop Cafe that Idgie & Ruth worked at in the movie. The cafe serves up classic southern fare in vintage country digs and looks almost exactly the same as it did in the film . I am from Charleston, SC and while the fried green tomatoes here are not the best I've ever had as a Southerner , they came out piping hot and a perfect crispy texture with a nice flavor . They are a must try simply because of the novelty of visiting Whistle Stop Cafe! We also tried the Rooster Strips : Fried chicken tenders. These were great! The batter was light , the chicken was fresh with a light crunchy texture. They were busy and our server did a great job . Our food came out fast , fresh and hot !
