I loved it here, we stayed on the nights of 29 and 30 December for a quick pre NYE break. We got a 2 nights for the price of one deal provided that we ate in the restaurant both nights.
I was relaxed from the moment we turned up, massively hungover from a wedding the night before, but the staff and all the people in the pub were really laid back and friendly and the bacon and tomato ciabatta healed me almost immediately. For dinner that night I started with a bloody mary (10/10), then had scallops, follwed by hake fillet with white beans and chorizo and sherry jelly. All really good and reasonably priced.
We were feeling a bit better the next day and went shopping in Bath and to the spa. As a result we were more prepared for a proper dinner. I had a bloody mary to start again, then smoked haddock and leek risotto. We had a free glass of English white wine with the starters, which was really good (of which more later).
I had phesant for main course, which was alright, but the cauliflour cheese side dish was great especially when mixed with my chestnut mash. I had an apple pie sort of thing for dessert and then coffee and petit fours then a double brandy while sitting on the massive comfy sofas and reading the internet.
Breakfast both days was excellent, including duck eggs from ducks that actually live at the pub.
The English wine we were given was for sale as it was from a vinyard round the back of the pub. It was also really cheap given the quality of it so we bought 6 bottles.
A great place and highly recommended. read more
