We started out with two different breads and baked Camembert cheese/caramelized onions, then grilled asparagus with blue Monday cheese and walnuts. Most ordered fish and chips of course. Three had truffle macaroni cheese. One ordered beef sirloin with Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. Then we shared several desserts--chocolate mousse with honeycomb and sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. The servers were all attentive. They brought several pitchers of citrus/mint infused water for our tables. Cozy setting.

Big mistake. I had jerk chicken which was the most disappointing thing I had tasted for a long time and almost inedible it was so hot and spicy. I have an asbestos tongue but this was ridiculous. I suspect that the 'cook' had just smeared jerk paste over it instead of creating a marinade. Worse was the fact that she dismissed the complaints of everyone, by saying that was how it is supposed to be. Err don't think so. There are ways of dealing with complaints and this was very badly managed Other meals were small, bland and ordinary. I would go back as it's a lovely pub, but would make sure that the chef was on duty before I ordered anything.

When the food arrived in my head I was already questioning why the portion size was so huge but as soon as I had my first mouthful i was in heaven. Don't tell my mum but this was on a par with her cooking. I couldn't even finish my dish and I'm a big eater. Colleagues eating with me were glazed over with joy when eating their dishes, jerk chicken, spicy prawns, steak sandwiches. The Jamaican chef came out to see me when I finished and I wanted to give him a hug. Thumbs up from all around. If you want a true Caribbean dining experience visit this place, the service is outstanding and I've been sneaking back a couple of times a month for my fix when my mum is on a cooking strike. Chef always pops out to see me and it's nice to be welcomed by all the staff.

We walked out there with the dogs (which are welcome and the pub even provide treats and water) and had a lovely Sunday lunch on their terrace followed by a game of table tennis in the garden. It's not just the garden and the settings that make this place so wonderful, it's the service, the food, the home made honey and everything that goes with it. The worst thing about the Wheatsheaf is having to leave. Highly recommended.
