Despite seeing some negative reviews about the food, I decided to give this place a chance since opinions seemed mixed. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a big mistake--this is definitely somewhere I'd recommend avoiding. I ordered oysters, and they were served in a shocking condition: with a worm crawling on them. When I pointed this out to the server, she dismissed it and claimed it was normal and "comes with it," which was honestly concerning. A manager eventually stepped in, took the plate back, and offered to replace the dish, but by that point I had completely lost my appetite and declined. Overall, the experience was unsettling, and the food quality was far from acceptable. Not worth the risk.

The Wharf has been our favorite restaurants in Old Town for years. It is so cozy, the food is delicious, and the service is great. Plans changed, and I ended up going alone last evening. They were so attentive. I enjoyed a wine special ( Vermentino from Barboursville VA), the tomato-based MD seafood chowder, and the baked shrimp topped with crab. I was considering dessert. The server told me the oatmeal-coconut pie was his favorite, so I tried it. It was delicious--not a typical combination but so yummy. Don't miss this place when you are in Alexandria.

Stopped in to escape a cold winter night with a friend to warm up. The service is excellent, and our waiter was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions and gave great recommendations. However, cleanliness was a concern for me. The bathroom was gross, the lemons were bad, and the clam chowder clams were so gritty, I hurt a tooth. The food itself was just OK and that was disappointing for such an expensive place. The bread tasted very off to me & that was so disappointing because I love fresh bread with butter. My steak needed more seasoning and the asparagus wasn't anything exceptional. The star of the night was the mashed potatoes. Overall, I don't think I'll be back but it was a good place to try out.

This gem is a go to for a date night. It has a historical feel as the building is modified from its original build from early Alexandria (centuries old!). I visited for maybe the 5th time. Each time I visit is great service, ambiance, and food. Last night, however, was a bit subpar with food but the service and hospitality were excellent. It was valentines dinner on a Friday night and the restaurant was packed, which may had led to the food not being as great as normal. I ordered a filet mignon cooked medium but received a filet cooked almost well done, tasteless, and chewy :( the amazing drinks made up for the sub par meal. I will return of course.

This is a solid choice for good food and superior service. I've been here multiple times and never miss a chance for the she crab soup. It's one of the best I've ever had. Very elegant setup that's perfect for celebrations, date night, or any time you want to feel luxurious.

The outside of the restaurant looked a little fancier than it was inside. The ceiling was full of wires and staples so it wasn't as romantic as I had hoped but this is an older building so I can't fault them. We sat away from the bar and arrived around 7:30. The restaurant was pretty empty but then again it was a Wednesday. We were offered tap, still, or sparkling water and crusty bread with butter. The butter was nice and soft which is always a nice touch. We got a half dozen oysters. I was kind of surprised there was no mignonette but then again, it wasn't listed on the menu. It came with cocktail sauce, horseradish, and lemons. I got the horseradish crusted salmon and it came with garlicky spinach and some mashed potatoes. The salmon was pretty big and I couldn't finish it all, not for lack of trying. My husband got the rockfish served atop some succotash, it was very good as well. The prices were on par with the area. The waitress was attentive and checked on me to make sure my specially made drink was made correctly.

The food is absolutely delicious!! Our server was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu! Not annoying but kept drinks filled as needed and bussed the table at appropriate times! We sat outside as the day was perfect weather and there was a violinist busking in the area! I highly recommend it. It's on the pricier side as it's a fine dining type of establishment.

My wife and I came here for Winter Restaurant Week and we had a great time! We had a full 3-course meal: Apps (Caesar Salad & She Crab Soup), Entrée (Salmon Oscar), and Dessert (Basque Style Cheesecake). You can't go wrong with Caesas Salad, but it was okay. Nothing special. My wife enjoyed the crab soup but the sherry took away from the experience. It wasn't bad though. The Entrées were BANGIN!!!! So gooooddd... the salmon, postatoes, and grilled asparagus - was "LIKE THAT!" It was so good, we were apalled. The entree alone sealed the deal for us. We WILL be coming back. Customer Service was so personable, and the waiters were "ON IT!" Super attentive; 10 out of 10. We weren't fans of the cheesecake. Just not what we were used to (i.e. New York Style) but it wasn't "the worst," or bad. It was decent. All in all-- We're gonna have to come back and try some other dishes.

We come here almost every Christmas Eve and we love it! We split a fee appetizers, order lobster and steaks, and then split a few different desserts. The service is always amazing, but I definitely recommend getting a reservation because they are booked during the holidays. The restaurant is busy, but is also moderately quiet allowing for an enjoyable dining experience. Highly recommend!

Pictures from the outside make this spot seem much more fancier than it actual is. There was a leak from the ceiling in the middle of the dining room. The wooden paneling on the walls looked unwell. The waitstaff was over dressed. Pasta and sauce had some nice kick to it. Lobster was pretty standard and the sides balanced it well.

I came here for lunch and ordered the broiled old-town seafood platter that came with rockfish, shrimp, and a crab cake. The only thing I would recommend is perhaps adding a veggie instead of fries. However, the food was seasoned and delicious. Also, the complimentary bread they give you is good and soft. The inside is spacious and they also offer outdoor seating. I decided to sit at the bar. The bartender was nice, and patient, and continued to check on me. Another recommendation or gripe, they don't offer sweet tea, so I stuck with drinking water.

Visited The Wharf this past Sunday for an 8pm reservation. We lucked out with street parking as there was someone pulling away when we arrived. The restaurant was rather empty inside as most people were sitting outdoors on this cooler evening. Inside, the restaurant is cozy with a nautical theme. We ended up being seated indoors next to a window near the bar, and had the space all to ourselves. My date and I ordered from the Restaurant Week menu, which had limited options compared to the regular dinner menu, but figured it was the last day of Restaurant Week, so why not? We both had the She Crab soup and crab cakes (+$10 up-charge) for our appetizer and entrée respectively, and while he had the bread pudding, I had the cheesecake for dessert. Service was excellent, but as expected when the restaurant is hardly at half capacity. The bread we were served upon sitting down was delicious and paired well with the creamy She Crab soup, which comes with oyster crackers; however, the proportion of soup to crabmeat was slightly disappointing - I would have liked for there to be more chunks of crabmeat in the soup, but honestly, who wouldn't? The crab cakes come with two decent sized cakes with only a small amount of filler, but would have looked slightly more appetizing if broiled for just a few minutes at the end of cooking, so that the top is slightly browned and not so soft (as if just reheated in a microwave); the dish is served perfectly salted with grilled asparagus as well as mashed potatoes. It's a good value for the price (despite the $10 up-charge)! Neither the bread pudding nor the cheesecake were anything to write home about, so probably could have skipped that unless you ordered from the Restaurant Week menu, which includes dessert. Overall, The Wharf was a solid experience. Although I wouldn't make the drive specifically for the crab cakes here, I would definitely come back to try their other seafood dishes!

    Great atmosphere!

Hank's Oyster Bar - Alexandria VA…read more For many years, Old Town Alexandria has been a dependable friend to restaurants and to those who visit the same. As an Old Town resident, I first visited Hank's Oyster Bar 15 years ago, when its space on King Street was a beloved, if cramped, destination for guests from all over the DMV (and beyond). Since then, a sibling Hank's Oyster Bar established itself when the Wharf arose from the docks of the historical D.C. fish market on Maine Ave. SW. Around the same time, the King Street Hank's relocated from King Street to its current location at the intersection of N. St. Asaph Street and Montgomery Street. The location makes sense - parking at the former location was just about impossible. Parking is possible at the new location, but it's still in Old Town, so plan ahead if you're arriving by car. The restaurant's location now is in the northeast quadrant of Old Town - about eight blocks north of the intersection of King Street and North Washington Street - and can be reached from the Metro Rail Stations at either King Street or Braddock Road, using the DASH free buses - Routes 30 or 31. (Exit the bus at Madison St & N Saint Asaph St if using Bus 30 or 31 from Braddock Road; exit the bus at Montgomery St & N Saint Asaph St if using the bus from King Street Metro.) Although I have yet to try it, Hank's Pasta Bar also operates from this location as well - although the website reflects the pasta menu is intended for carry-out orders only. Still, if the folks in the kitchen set their minds to offer diverse pasta dishes the same way they approach serving oysters and seafood, you're likely to be in particularly capable hands for carry-out and delivery service. For my recent visit, I was looking for a light lunch served at a place with a decent bar, and Hank's fits that description. At the recommendation of the host, I took the elevator up to the rooftop floor - a light, spacious, clean, and hospitable dining room. I ordered the appetizer griddled crab cake (a single grilled cake with Cole slaw, $19) along with a Narragansett lager and Maker's Mark. A perfect selection for a light lunch, all in a relaxed and comfortable space.

Along with the two dozen oysters that we had, we also had the shrimp Poboy and seared Dorado. Both were amazing probably the best po boythat I've had and the fish was cooked perfectly. The poor boy was super buttered. I had Texas toast to accompany the fried shrimp and the shrimp was perfectly cooked not chewy at all. There's a good amount of mayo and sauce along with the sandwich which made everything very flavorful and it was lighting up with the coleslaw that I combined on the top. Perfect light crisp from the shrimp and bread. I like the oysters they're great for Maryland; little bit of brine and they tasted fresh. I liked the marinara sauce that came with it. We ordered a second dozen since the first batch was quite good. I've tried better ones on the West Coast, but for the East Coast these were quite good. If you don't taste much, you should definitely chew a lot more on the oysters and the flavor will start to come out. The Dorado was cooked perfectly and the sauce of it was amazing. I think it was some sort of basil, oil, and other sauce combined, but regardless it tasted so good. It reminded me of a fish dish that I got back in Washington state. The drinks were good but quite strong. I had the not your nana's banana, but I was not a fan since it was quite strong. We got the watermelon punch which was great. Wish we had gotten two of those. The atmosphere is good although quite busy we came on Valentine's Day so they're a lot of couples and most of the tables were filled, but we were still able to sit down on a small table next to the door a little bit cold when the door is open, but it's understandable since the restaurant is is making the most out of the space we still enjoyed our dinner. Service was OK. Our waiter was nice, but it sort of seemed like he was putting a fake smile on. I get it though we're probably his 100,000th customer that he's seen. Regardless, we had a good experience and I'll definitely will be back here.

Our assigned server only came to our table twice--once to take our order and once to drop off the check. It was another staff member who actually provided a majority of the service - she brought us warm bread, delivered our food, and refilled our drinks multiple times. When it came time to pay, I paid in cash using a larger bill. The server assumed I was giving a large tip and was about to walk away with no intention of giving me my change. I made no comment of "keep the change" I then had to awkwardly ask for my change back so I could leave a tip separately. He proceeded to ask how much change I wanted, putting me on the spot and feeling pressured to leave a large tip (mind you, I was going to already leave a tip). Because of this, I ended up leaving a much larger tip (over 50%) than I had intended, especially considering the level of service he provided us. I understand that I could have been more firm about asking for all my change back, but guests should never feel pressured or uncomfortable when paying. Overall, the service experience with our waiter overshadowed what could have been an otherwise enjoyable visit.

He took exceptional care of our table, was professional, attentive, and truly elevated the entire dining experience. He walked us through all of the specials -- from the Chilean sea bass to the espresso-rubbed filet mignon -- and everything sounded so good that we ended up trying a little bit of everything. And let me tell you... every single dish delivered. For appetizers we had the Rockefeller oysters, whiskey shrimp and kale Caesar salads. For entrees, I personally had the red snapper entree and the scallop entree, and I also ordered the ribeye for the table. Other dishes included the espresso filet, a Mediterranean branzino along with another entrée featuring crab cake, shrimp, and salmon. Everything was flavorful, perfectly prepared, and beautifully presented. Everyone at the table thoroughly enjoyed their meals. One of the highlights of the evening was when Ibrahim smoked our drinks tableside for us. It added such a fun and memorable touch to an already special night. He also took the time to explain the history behind the restaurant, and it was such an informative and meaningful story. Learning about the history made the experience feel even more special and gave us an even greater appreciation for dining there. Overall, it was an outstanding birthday dinner and an experience I will absolutely remember. I will definitely be returning, and if you're looking for a beautiful restaurant with amazing food, wonderful service, and a memorable atmosphere, I highly recommend checking them out. Go hungry, enjoy yourself, and have fun -- you won't be disappointed.

Service had a rocky start. We also had a reservation but were initially told they couldn't find it without much effort to check. The wait times were extremely long about 30 minutes for our appetizer and an hour for our entrées. After waiting that long, 2 out of 3 of us had to send our food back because it was undercooked. That said, our waiter Reuben was very kind and did what he could to turn things around. He comped some items and brought out bread pudding, which ended up being the best thing we had. The ambience in the bar area was decent, with nice smaller tables and good music, but it was so loud we could barely hear each other. Food overall was hit or miss. The calamari was just okay, but the breading was falling off and the sauce was runny. The clam chowder was actually pretty good, according to my friends. Unfortunately, the entrées were the biggest letdown; one steak came out rare instead of medium well, and my salmon looked slimy and unappetizing. Overall, between the long wait times and disappointing entrées, I wouldn't return. I do appreciate our waiter Reuben though for trying to improve the experience, so shout out to him!
