I was in DC for a meeting in Old Town, and was looking for a restaurant that was within walking distance of my hotel. I saw that a new Peruvian Japanese fusion restaurant had just opened a few months ago and was only 2 blocks away. I did a little research and found that Ghazal Amir, the restaurateur behind the Crab Cab, a seafood spot in Capitol Heights MD. was the owner and chef. That was all I needed to see - as I lived in MD for over 30 years and became a huge fan of crabs! The restaurant interior is very pretty - it has a nice soft vibe to it. I went on a Monday at 5:00, and had no trouble getting a table. Of course, seafood was the reason I chose Finn and Fire, so my choices were all 'from the sea'. I started with the Curry Crab soup. I've had a LOT of crab soup, but never with curry. I like Indian food and thought it would be an interesting dish. It was! The soup, with a flavorful curry broth, rich coconut cream, spices and pieces of crab was so delicious! It was a great start to the meal! Next up, the Shrimp Tempura with a spicy mayo. I was so anxious to try a shrimp, I forgot to take a picture before I ate one! The attached picture reflects 3, but there are 4 shrimps with the dish! The shrimp had a light, golden, delicate batter with an airy crunch. The shrimp were butterflied and were fried perfectly straight. They were tender, lightly seasoned, and came with a slightly spicy mayo dip. They were excellent. I ordered one more appetizer - the Lobster and Shrimp Dumplings. The dumplings were delicate, thin and smooth with a perfect texture. The minced lobster and shrimp inside was juicy and very tasty, with a great seafood flavor. They were drizzled with a savory sauce and were scrumptious! Now, for the main course....a Crab cake. One crab cake was all I could eat after such great appetizers...and it didn't disappoint! Like the soup, I've had hundreds of crab cakes - this was a unique and memorable one! With large chunks of fresh crabmeat, and very little filler, it was heavenly! Attended their soft opening in July and returned for lunch in August. This place is a hidden gem in Old Town and sets the bar high for decor, service, and their menu. Creatively crafted rolls and cocktails, the owner is a self made chef and entrepreneur and her team; Adrian, Nikka, and Thomas are all genuinely hospitable and kind. So I found Finn and Fire to be a bit of a mixed bag. The Peruvian dishes were very good, but the sushi was just average. The portions were also small for the price. The sushi also came out after the rest of the table's dishes were served, which was unexpected since everyone else had steaks and crab cakes. I split ceviche and oysters with a friend and ordered the spicy maguro for myself. If I had to do it again, I would order a chef composition in addition to the roll because I was still hungry! I also ate half of my husband's kimchi truffle crispy potatoes. Those were excellent. Overall, I would give it a 3.5. I liked it but didn't love it. read more

Very quick service for the night we went. One thing I'd flag is that their website stated they have happy hour 9PM to close every day. I figured we wouldn't partake because our reservation was at 8:15, but I asked about it and was told that they don't do that. They should remove that from the website if that's the case, or specify if it's only certain days. The space is beautiful. It is very elegant and exudes fine dining experience. Love the location in Alexandria. The servers are great and attentive. I couldn't even tell that they just opened a month ago, so kudos to the staff there! The food options are pretty solid. They were out of the nigiri or sashimi options and only had their specialty rolls that night, fine. The spicy maguro roll was good. The crab curry soup may have been the best thing we tried on the menu. Everything was just "ok" or "good" nothing to really write home about. On top of the first items mentioned, we also tried the wagyu dumplings, shrimp tempura, crispy rice salmon, truffle fried rice, and broccolini. The only major let down food wise was the kimchi truffle crispy potatoes. I wouldn't try those again. I'm not sure if I'd try this spot again, but we did keep it pretty light with shared apps. I was really excited to try Finn & Fire because it presents itself as an upscale restaurant. However, outside of the beautiful aesthetics I unfortunately left very underwhelmed and unimpressed. My friend and I ordered at the exact same time, and we specifically asked for her food to come out with my entrée. That didn't happen at all. She received her soup AND entrée before I even received my appetizer. By the time I finally got my food, she had already finished eating and boxed up her leftovers..I received it 10 minutes after she finished her whole meal. It completely took away from the experience of actually having dinner together. Food-wise, the curry crab soup was SO good and easily the highlight of the meal. It was flavorful and had a nice amount of crab. My friend ordered the garlic butter chargrilled oysters and thought they were too salty, although she did enjoy her fried rice and said it was flavorful. I ordered the salmon rice crisps but didn't realize the salmon was tartare, which I personally don't like, so I sent those back. They were gracious enough to remove them from my bill. Unfortunately, my chicken Primavera pasta was disappointing. The pasta itself was bland, the sauce was a little watery, and the chicken breast was dry. I also wasn't offered Parmesan, salt, or pepper- no one came by to check on how the food was. I also had trouble getting our waiters attention. Our waiter was very nice, so I definitely want to give him credit for that, but he simply didn't check on us enough. Once our food arrived, no one really came back to see how everything was (except one time). I had the same small glass of water from the time I sat down until I finished my meal...no refill. My friend had to go to the bar to get me a glass of water. The cleanliness was another concern. My friend went to the restroom and found it in pretty bad condition: the toilet was clogged/overflowing and the trash was overflowing. We actually overheard another customer bring it to the attention of the owners, who appeared to be sitting at the bar going through receipts. One other thing I found strange was the placement of the sushi drop-off/pickup station. It is literally along the path to and from the restroom, so people are walking out of the bathroom right next to uncovered food waiting to be picked up by servers. What made the placement even more confusing was that there appeared to be an actual food-prep/service area with a sink directly across from it. Overall, there were a few positives: the curry crab soup was excellent, my friend enjoyed her truffle fried rice, and our waiter was very pleasant...but for a restaurant positioning itself as upscale, the food pacing, lack of attentiveness, cleanliness issues, and some of the food itself just did not meet my expectations. I really wanted to love Finn & Fire, but unfortunately, this visit was a miss for me. I was really excited to try this new restaurant! It's been buzzing all over social media and it's right in my backyard. I have to admit that I was a bit underwhelmed. I'm hoping that they are still working through all the kinks, but customer service is critical and it was very lacking. The food was decent. I sat at the bar and ordered the creole butter oysters, hamachi yuzu and the wagyu dumplings. The oysters were delicious and I'd definitely return for them. The hamachi was very fresh. The dumplings were terrible! The dumpling wrapper was mushy and the wagyu inside was flavorless. As mentioned, I sat at the bar. I was halfway through eating my food when what appeared to be a manager. A woman with dark colored hair (who I overheard asking the bartender to make her a cocktail) asked me and another patron if we could move to accommodate a family of 4 with two children. I ignored her at first because another woman seemed to oblige her request. She then asked me again and then proceeded to start grabbing my plates. I stopped her and told her I'd move them myself. At that point, she asked what I was drinking and offered the next one on the house. I was extremely irritated. Also, sitting two children at the bar is highly inappropriate. The bartender poured me another glass of the wine I was drinking but only gave me a half of the serving I originally received. It was free so I didn't complain, but also not what I was offered. I will say that the restaurant is gorgeous and beautifully designed. I loved the look of everything including even the door to get inside. I'm so excited about this new spot! We didn't go for the soft launch the month prior, but we went on their fourth or fifth day open and we were pleasantly surprised! Usually new restaurants have to work out some kinks, but the service and food were really smooth! The space itself is very cool and well decorated. We ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice, lobster dumplings, tuna nigiri, salmon truffle nigiri special, and two rolls. Everything was delicious except for the dumplings. Unfortunately the cook on them was a bit off so they were super super slimy. It was off putting. Everything else was amazing! We loved the hamachi roll with the jalapeño and the salmon nigiri special! We didn't try dessert or cocktails, but we will definitely be back! I visited Finn & Fire during their soft launch before the official opening, so I wanted to keep that in mind when rating my experience. The service was exceptional, and the hospitality from the owner and management really stood out. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care about creating a great experience. The food was okay overall. Asian cuisine is one of my favorites, so I tend to have pretty high expectations. My favorite dish of the meal was the broccolini--it was flavorful and easily the standout for me. There were a few dishes I think could use some refinement, and I personally would make a few adjustments, but that's to be expected during a soft opening as the team works through the details. I think Finn & Fire has a lot of potential, and I'm looking forward to coming back after they've had some time to settle into their official opening. Really cute inside! They did a good job with the renovations. I only tried the Japanese side of the menu which was better than decent but not amazing. I would def come back to try the pasta or steak. I really wanted to give this place a high rating, but I'll be honest, the prices are exorbitant. $500 for a table of 6 for dinner. The food quality for the price was just not matching up. I wouldnt necessarily call this place "upscale" as advertised. It is similar quality to most restaurants in old town, nothing more special. The portions were also quite variable. Some dishes came with a side, while others had none and a side had to be ordered separately. I've broken down my opinions below. 1. Drinks: Drinks were delicious. I ordered the golden hour. Very heavy on the apricot flavor. Loved it. Prices comparable to other restaurants at $15-$20 a cocktail. 2. Dumplings: 5 wagyu dumplings. Super flavorful, really enjoyed the filling, though small in size. $16 was way too high for the amount of appetizer you're receiving. 3. Shrimps Tempura: 4 total. avoid. If you just want breading and no shrimp this is for you. This was probably the lowest quality item of the night. 4. Barbecue Jumbo Shrimp: $36. Comes with mashed potatoes though not listed, so I ordered a side. Only came with 5 shrimp. But, was quite tasty, would order again. 5. Seafood Pasta: $34. Very rich and flavorful, we felt like there could've been more seafood for the price. Portion was large. 6. Prime Filey Mignon: $48. Cooked great and tasted delicious. Charged an additional $4 for cowboy butter. No side. Steak was quite small for 8 ounces. 7. Truffle Fried Rice: Tasted good, nothing to write home about. I think I could've made something similar at home. $9. 8. Fired Chicken: $34. Came out later than all other dishes so my friend had nothing to eat while our entrees had arrive. The chicken was large in portion but again, no side. 9. Tres Leches: $13. Delicious. Loved, and felt the portion was reasonable. Overall- this restaurant is overpricing their food. Their happy hour is nearly half the price for most of this food. Example: $24 of a sushi roll normally at happy hour $11, make it make sense? The amount they're charging, there should be a side with every meal. The decor of the place is beautiful. Staff were super welcoming. Honestly, I liked the food but will probably never return as I feel we were robbed with the variable portions, additional add on pricing for butter and sides, and the advertisement of "fine dining" with the quality and size of food as a normal restaurant. I'd save your money and go have 2 dinners for the price of 1 here. read more

Based on the items I had at the bar it was a great experience! I came in close to kitchen closing time and they were still happy to oblige and prepare the food I ordered so I appreciated that. I really think the Nigiri rolls were the highlight. Very well made and delicious and would return just for them. The lobster bisque was good and the oysters were well done ! The filet mignon was maybe little undercooked from what i ordered but it was perfect and i also ordered with a side of creamy mashed potatoes, simple, but done really well. Paired it with a glass of rosé sparkling wine, great match! Ordered some sushi while waiting for my main food, it was really fresh, and the hamachi, salmon sashimi was a standout. Absolutely loved the restaurant. It's gives a very Tulum vibe with the decor and aesthetic. I went in around 2pm on a Saturday which was during brunch hours but you could also order from the dinner menu which we ended up ordering the Wagyu dumplings off that menu. Everything we tried was really good Wagyu dumplings: 4.5/5 I liked the taste and the flavor was good. Just wish we got more but 5 for $16 isn't bad for it being Wagyu. Classic ceviche: 4.5/5 One of the best ceviches I've had in the DMV area. Nice flavor and I liked the puréed sweet potato instead of chunks like some places do. It blended so much better in my opinion. Just need a bigger portion of plantain chips but they'll give more if you ask. Creole Oysters: 5/5 Half dozen charbroiled oysters with a creole garlic butter. No notes, absolutely delicious. Tres leches French toast: 4.5/5 I was nervous about it being tres leches because I'm not a big fan of French toast that is on the soggy/not fully cooked side and tres leches is usually a more moist almost soggy (in my opinion) dessert but this was not soggy at all. Loved it just wish it had a little bit more tres leches flavor. Truffle fried rice with egg: 5/5 This was soo good. Just the right amount of truffle flavor. Literally no notes! Crab cakes and egg: 4/5 The crab cakes were mostly crab and very little filler at all. Big chunks of lump crab. Eggs had good flavor. Only thing I didn't like 100% was the kimchi sauce on the kimchi potatoes. Wasn't a big fan of the sauce but there were a couple pieces that didn't have sauce and I did like that. If I order a brunch dish again that comes with potatoes I would just ask to not have the sauce that they are tossed in. Passion Pisco: 3.5/5 I liked this drink but I'm more of a sweet cocktail drinker not really citrus/sour but it is still good even though it's not my normal drink of choice. Golden Hour: 5/5 Now this is my style of drink. On the sweeter side but not too sweet. Really liked this. Overall I loved the food and atmosphere. I celebrated my birthday dinner at Fin and Fire in Old Town Alexandria, and overall, I had a good experience. The menu had a nice variety of options, and I ordered the filet mignon with fried rice, along with sushi and a mocktail. The filet mignon was good, and the sushi and mocktail were enjoyable as well. The fried rice, however, was extremely underseasoned and seemed to have no salt or flavor at all. I'm not sure whether that was intentional, but it definitely needed some adjustment. Our waiter was very kind, attentive, and helpful, although he appeared to be covering a large section of the restaurant, so we understood that service might take a little longer. My brother's curry-style crab soup was excellent--honestly, one of the best things I tasted that evening. He also enjoyed the seafood pasta, and my mom was happy with her meal. The portions were smaller than I expected, but I understand that the restaurant serves more of a tapas-style experience. I would still return and try more items, especially that soup. With a few small tweaks, particularly with the seasoning and portion sizes, this place has a lot of potential. Overall, I'd give Fin and Fire a 7.2 out of 10. Visited on a weekday with a reservation. We were immediately greeted and seated upon entry. Our server Isaiah was very knowledgeable about the menu and provided great recommendations based upon our personal taste profiles. Since we visited during the soft opening the entire menu was not available but we ordered one of the signature maki rolls, chicken pesto pasta (the chicken breast was a little dry) and seafood pasta. The spicy maguro was amazing and the portions for the pasta dishes were large and very hearty. We ordered two mocktails which have a strong citrus profile but were very presented and very refreshing. The music playlist was extremely relaxing and very enjoyable to listen to and for the soft opening the restaurant was not full but I would definitely recommend reservations to ensure a table. We understand they're newly opened and hope they're able to work through some of these early kinks. No lump crab as advertised (more like a sprinkle), 5 overcooked salad shrimp (very small) no flavor, every plate looked different, no sauce, too much sauce. I even ordered one to go and wish I would have cancelled the order... picture attached. Hot food to go packed in a paper to go box wrapped in plastic wrap. The box was soggy, sauce dripping through the box... please get the proper to go containers. This reminded me of a corner store carry out. Considering this restaurant was highly recommended, we were extremely disappointed. Dangerous Safety Hazard and Shockingly Poor Management The food and drinks here are amazing, but the management's handle on safety and customer service is unacceptable. We came to celebrate a birthday, which took a terrifying turn when the birthday guest took a sip of her white burgundy and discovered a large, sharp sliver of glass in her mouth.When we brought this to the manager, she removed a single appetizer from our bill. Given that a guest was almost severely injured by their glassware, we asked for the dinner to be comped. This request was flatly rebuffed. To make matters worse, the manager's parting comment was, "Things happen." A delayed entrée is a "things happen" moment. Serving a dangerous glass shard is a massive safety failure. Prioritizing the bill over a guest's safety and dismissing a near-medical emergency is disgraceful. We will never return. read more

We were excited to try Finn & Fire after seeing all the positive buzz, beautiful Instagram photos, and glowing early reviews. Unfortunately, our experience didn't live up to the hype. We had a 7:00 PM reservation and arrived about 20 minutes early. The restaurant was only about half full, yet the welcome felt disorganized. The hostess seemed unsure where to seat us, and after we were finally seated, we waited over 12 minutes before anyone acknowledged us or even offered water. It took even longer before someone finally took our drink order, and then another wait before our food order was taken. The service never really recovered from there. We started with the salmon and yellowtail sashimi, which was the highlight of the evening. The fish tasted fresh, had no fishy odor, and the flavors were clean and well-balanced. For our entrée, we shared the ribeye with Peruvian mash and broccolini. We specifically asked for the steak to be sliced since we were sharing it, but that request was overlooked. While the steak was cooked exactly to the requested medium-rare with a nice crust, it lacked the rich flavor you'd expect from a $68 ribeye. It also arrived only warm rather than hot, making the fat firmer than it should have been instead of melting in your mouth. The broccolini, Peruvian mash, and ricotta sauce were all fine, but nothing memorable. I understand Finn & Fire has only recently opened, but first impressions matter. The opening weeks are when restaurants establish their reputation, and every detail--from the greeting at the door to the final bite--needs to leave guests wanting to return. Unfortunately, this visit felt more like a restaurant still trying to find its footing than one ready to justify its premium pricing. The décor is beautiful, and there is definitely potential here. I genuinely hope they work through the service issues and elevate the execution because the concept is promising. For now, if you're looking for an exceptional steak, I'd recommend Oak Steakhouse. If sushi is what you're after, Kissaki remains the stronger choice. read more
