A great little bar with an outdoor patio that hosted a Bunna Cafe's Ethiopian Pop Up Dinner. This place has a very laid back vibe, I immediately liked it upon walking in. One of my go-to coffee shops in Williamsburg. Friendly staff, great space, and chill vibes. They have both indoor and outdoor seating (which is great during the summer/warmer months). It's a nice place to meet up with friends, or get some work done. They've got an abundant amount of outlets inside, so you'll never have to worry about your laptop running out of juice. It can, however, get a little cramped inside towards the back since the tables are pretty close together. Don't forget this is also a bar! Awesome selection of spirits as well as a knowledgeable staff who really know how to make proper cocktails. This may be an example of grade inflation or just genuine stoke-ity.But I love the West. This is my go to coffee spot/bar/place I used go to trivia. They have both Kombucha and Cold Brew on tap! That is neat. Mornings offer pretty standard coffee fair, they get their pastries from balthazar and other local vendors. Sometime's they'll have donuts from Glaze (droooool) but apparently they're hard to transport in the summer heat (booo!). It does seem to have a lot of people on laptops at all times, which isn't my favorite thing in the world. But hopefully all those a-holes will buy their coffee here and move over to Starbucks to do the whole self-employed squatter thing. Backyard is quite nice, although I really hang there. I usually just stop by for my iced coffee and then retreat back to apartment to recover from my hangover/sadness game of thrones is over for the season. The West is my "go to" local coffee spot for pretty much everything. I come here... - To work on my computer when I don't want to stay in my more than tiny apartment (come during 'off' hours, tables are hard to come by) - For a quick coffee from the takeout window - When visitors are staying with me for the 'not Starbucks' coffee experience - For those coffee dates where maybe you do want alcohol after all (decent variety of beers on tap) Overall, the coffee is good (iced coffee or soy caps are my go to orders) usually made quickly by the friendly staff. Beer here is also a good option and a low-key place to meet people. Sometimes it is impossible to get a seat and the waits can be long, but hey, that is to be expected. My only two complaints are a) that it is cash only (why?!) and b) They have a health grade 'B' which makes me nervous but doesn't keep me away. read more

I walk around this city like a damned ghoul for hours at a time when I have a day off or surprise free time, because I have no idea what to do with myself when work cools down for a moment. I guess I've just become so acclimated to the run-and-gun, ignore-your-friends, date-by-proxy thing that is NYC that I don't know how to have fun, and instead, I look for a place to cool my heels with a good cup of coffee while I stare at the Susan Sontag book that I carry around in plain view, hoping to find the focus to read it. The West is the best place to reconsider your life. I sit here often, sometimes with friends, sometime by myself, but always with a cup of coffee and then later a Celtic Ale and some shortbread cookies. The cucumber water is a nice touch - the self-serve refreshment removes the embarrassing inconvenience of asking for water, and COMPLETELY does away with the shame that comes with demanding your bartender to slice you a fresh cucumber. The bathrooms are normal. I appreciate the fact that there's a nice man in the deli across the street also. The West has never given me shit for eating chicken in their business. It's seriously a winner. I seriously recommend wasting your time here than anywhere else. The people are nice, the coffee/brews are great, the decor is cozy, the garden yard is a nice place to eat your chicken, and it's conveniently close to a lot of chairs. read more

WiFi + Coffee + Booze. Sounds like the right kind of recipe to rev up my engine and drive. A calm, quaint place to get work done on a Sunday. The West has a decent amount of indoor and outdoor space to sprawl out your book bag, laptop, and books, or limbs if you're looking to relax. Start off with some coffee and reward yourself with a beer and a shot just before Happy Hour ends at 8PM. I appreciate the variety of liquid fuel. There's even a side window if you are on the go like a drive by shooting. I happen to stop in on a night where they were projecting Breaking Bad on a screen. I'm not quite caught up with the season, but this is very good for future reference. This drew a casual, unruffled, crowd of people, which I can appreciate. None of that boisterous yelling at the actors on the screen. There wasn't too much to the ambiance, and nothing that I disliked about the service. I couldn't say I loved the menu selection, and although they mentioned food I wasn't certain there was any. Maybe my favorite place in Williamsburg. Bartenders are all nice guys, and no bullshit either. Honest, real, nice people. I'm a Second Stop fanatic -- it's my Zen Palace. That being said, I like West a lot. The coffee is good (I just had one of the best espresso shots of my life a few minutes ago), the music is never bad, their vegan muffins are awesome, they don't care if you camp out on your laptop, and -- like everyone else says -- the staff is super friendly. The West follows what appears to be a well-worn formula for serious cafes in NYC: a clientele consisting of Macbook-toting 20 to 30somethings; young staff; a hip-hop soundtrack (not an essential, but surprisingly common). The interior is the variable factor: in nearby Blue Bottle for instance, it's modern hues of wood and white walls. Here it's ye olde with touches of hipster: dark wooden bar and tables with a carefully faded mirror lining the wall facing the bar. I had a flat white and my girlfriend a latte. Both decent. They've really done a good job of building this place out. The wooden bar, bar tables and floors are solid. You can feel the love aka good carpentry when you step in. We attended a pop-up dinner via Bunna Cafe here tonight and really enjoyed the space! I loved that there was a diverse crowd of readers, drinkers, and artists- there was even a model posing to be sketched in the corner. It's a nice spot for the community and those seem like more and more of a rarity. read more

2.5 stars Came here to support a mini theatre group. I thought it was weird to have a play performance at a bar, well at least this one with such a small stage. The West is a small and narrow dive bar in a gentrifying neighborhood. Place is okay, but maybe because it was a crowd attending the performance, it made the space very annoying to move around. I saw a few posters advertising special hosting events, and I still wonder how they can fit to do that. The bartender was helpful and friendly, quick to service. The bar later made popcorn to accompany the play but decided to make this an opportunity to charge $1 on a styroform cup filled popcorn. I just didnt think it was necessary to find profit in these small things. (I read that they have free popcorn nights, so why bother?) i am just bothered by the principle of it. They get business from the drinks everyone was buying for the performance! Also there is a huge hole in the bathroom, easily can be peeked through. i dont get it. Cheap drinks, but I can easily find a bigger and better bar for the same prices. meh. read more

The coffee is really tremendous. The beans are some of the best quality around. Beyond that, the service has always been typical terrible Williamsburg hipster fashion. The first time I came, the guy at the counter was more interested in talking with his two lady friends than taking our order. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else because of his attitude. The second time there was a counter person who was training a newbie. I told her three shots over ice, please. She looked at me confused but did not ask to clarify. I figured, hey, I tell every coffee shop the same order and it comes out the same every time. So, there shouldn't be a problem. While she's dropping the shots, she seemed to get more perplexed and irritated. She went to go help a guest who was at the outside counter. The shots sat there for well over 2 minutes. In the coffee world, any shot that's dropped and given to the customer in 12 seconds is dead. But, whatever, it's iced. I'll deal with it. She finally comes back to the shots, finishes them off and hands me three separate shots of espresso over ice in three separate plastic cups. What?! She then looks at me and charges me $7.50. Cash only. I told her to re-make my order the way any other barista would make it in any coffee shop in any type of location while I walked back to my apartment to gather cash for this Bentley of coffees. I came back, she made it, I paid $7.50 for three shots. The price is ridiculous, but the coffee is some of the best I've ever had. If you can get over the fact that in order to get amazing espresso you have to dip into your 401k and get a shitty attitude from your "maker," then keep going here. This place is also graded a B- whoever cares about Bloomberg's annoying attempts to regulate everything. read more

This is one of my favorite gems. Great atmosphere, bartenders are always super friendly, and the music is never not on-point. Pro tip: It's the perfect place for freelancers/late-night workers who want to get away from their own couch. Great wifi and they'll let you stay as long as you like (open till 2am!). The west is perfection of exactly what it's trying to be. A lot of establishments (especially in big cities) get caught up in the hype of being something huge and lose sight of what their mission is, not this place. The west is located on a corner in Williamsburg, very cozy and a decent amount of foot traffic. It's feels like it's not located in that spot which is why I loved it! It felt a bit divey but at the same time was refined and simply felt like the neighborhood spot you want to frequent. The back porch was a fairytale, so intimate an vibey but with character. My fiancé needed a pick me up and saw they had cappuccino so we were in. I think it was $4, wonderful pricing, and it was a a textbook coffee. I on the other hand, ordered the beer and a shot special - gennesse and a well shot for $5, the perfect way to start the evening before spending way too much on an overpriced cocktail. Decent coffee, the breakfast sandwich was a "one bite and throw away" thing. While the girl working warned me that they used hard boiled eggs not scrambled (for the love of god, WHY?!?) I wasn't prepared for how awful it would be when paired with blackened to a crisp bacon on some bread. The pastries are pretty decent and the space is cool. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole pushing Jameson shots thing, I don't really want to party where I work, but I do love Jameson shots, so it's like a catch-22. I've never ventured to the outdoor space but it looks super cute. The space itself is vast and people don't ever seem to be crammed in. There's a nice counter area in the front for folks who don't want to disturb folks working on their laptops. Also a walk up counter (with dog treats) for to go ordering. I'm just writing a review to say how nice the staff is! The girl working here was super enthusiastic, and it is so hard to find people with enthusiasm nowadays! I welcome it whenever I can find it. This cafe has beer in addition to all your basic coffee needs. They also have tea selections, too! The environment is why I keep coming back, to be honest. I went here one evening when I was going crazy from doing schoolwork in my apartment for too long. It was the only coffee place with wifi nearby that was open at 7pm on a weekday, so I packed up my laptop and headed over. The inside was dark and the room was narrow with several high tables set up along the length of it. I ordered a soy latte, which I enjoyed - not the best cup of coffee I've ever had, but certainly good. My main complaint was with the layout of the place. I do understand that they operate as both a bar and a coffee shop, so they have limited options as to how they set up their space. However, the high tables in the middle and the seats along the wall in the back were not conducive to working on a laptop. They had a couple lower tables, but definitely not enough. It was also a little dark, which I can't really complain about, since I didn't go during typical "coffee" hours. All that being said, I had no issues finding a power outlet, which is surprisingly difficult to do in a lot of coffee shops. The West has a good concept and good enough coffee (and drinks it looked like, though I didn't have any), but the execution is lacking. read more

This is an awesome place to get some work done while imbibing alcohol, coffee, or both. The dark atmosphere and rustic wood interior makes me really happy. Definitely my kind of place :) They also screen movies in the back. The only reason for the four star rating is the fact that the Prosecco I ordered here was flat and not great quality (kind of my fault for being a wine snob). I also wasn't amazed by the Manhattan they made for me once....too much sweet vermouth for my liking and lacking in complexity. But take i'll take it for what it is; It's not the kind of place you go for elaborate handcrafted cocktails or super high quality wines. I wanted to give this place more stars because I could see its potential, and the friend who recommended it (and accompanied me there when I went) gave it such high ratings. However, my experience wasn't *great*. I definitely intend to try it again since I am optimistic. 1 - The friendly barista chatted me up until I bought the maple latte special, which was $5 and sickeningly sweet. I'm super open-minded and I love autumn spices, but this was too much for me. It had enough sweetness/flavor for a drink 2-3 times as large as it was. When I was about halfway through, I asked if they could top me off with black coffee, and the woman (different person) was super nice about it, and that solved the problem. I guess $5 for an oversweet-latte-and-a-half isn't too bad. 2 - Decent pumpkin muffin, small, not too sweet/buttery, probably overpriced but I didn't notice. 3 - It was a cold, rainy, dark day and the door was open. It was freezing. My friend and I were literally shivering. Finally I asked if I could close the door, and again, they were super nice about it. The West Cafe is close by my apartment and I get coffee and breakfast there at least once a week. I've had the egg sandwich - sliced hardboiled eggs, melted cheddar, siracha aioli on multigrain or ciabatta (the multigrain is amazing) and a turkey/cheese pastilito (basically a croissant with turkey and cream cheese baked inside - yum). I like their coffee and they have pretty cheap drinks. They seem to have a lot of events there like trivia, comedy shows, and magazine launch parties, but I haven't ever gone in for one. The staff is friendly and will talk to you about the different beers or kombucha if you ask. Its very home-y and casual. There are flowers in mason jars on the tables, which I find cute. read more

So I love, love, love The West. My friends and I stumbled upon this place after we tried to get into The Brooklyn Winery to watch The Walking Dead but they were closed for a wedding! So we wandered further into Williamsburg and came across The West, which also shows The Walking Dead on Sunday Nights when the new episodes air!
