I came here for the first time on a weekday afternoon (after glimpsing it from Barcade across the street in the past) and was pleasantly surprised. I was hunting for a cafe with WiFi access to work on my laptop and decided to try The West. I initially ordered an americano and a lemon poppy seed muffin. The coffee was great; muffin more average, but this is probably my fault for ordering a muffin marketed as low fat (more fat=more delicious). I plugged my laptop into one of the open outlets and worked there for the better part of the afternoon. The atmosphere was very laid back, at least when I went, and you can spy other people on their laptops working as well. I noticed someone else ordered a bagel and having not realized that was a menu option, I promptly asked the staff whether they still had bagels. Finding out they did luckily had a few bagels left, I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel toasted with butter - this was the highlight of my visit! Truly better than a fair share of bagel shops I've been to. They also have a nice outdoor backyard area to sit and work. I will definitely come back for the nitro cold brew as well as their happy hour drinks! read more

I've been coming here for coffee pretty frequently and it's turned into my go-to spot. Good coffee with some nice breakfast options. It's also a bar and has a lot of room to chill and do some work. I haven't been at night yet but I feel like I would enjoy the bar scene just as much. Customer service is always very good. read more

I have worked over 14 fancy restaurants ,and visited houndreds of them and I live in NYC. I have two words about this place. -"FOOD HAS FLIES INSIDE" (probably bc it sits there for hours or days) - Server are rude and dirty , they touch "THEIR NOSE FROM INSIDE AND YOUR FOOD" and if you tell them not to, they will be rude Being clean , polite, and most importantly serving clean and fresh food is a requirement in this bussiness. My review is going to be unusual. Before I arrived, I had slipped on an uneven sidewalk plank and scraped my elbow. Consequently, when I walked in, I was clutching a bottle of water over the area where my elbow scraped the pavement. When I walked up to the counter, the barista noticed me clutching the water bottle, and I explained what happened. He gave me a bag of ice and a towel to help reduce the swelling on my elbow. The West! It was my first time here and I had to go for the Matcha Latte. I'm a fan! However, I distinctly asked for less ice and it seemed like the Barista added MORE ice than usual. It's around $6.50 for a cup of Matcha Latte which isn't all too bad. Matcha Latte: 4/5. It was extremely smooth. Oat milk seems to be the way to go! My go to coffee spot. I live right in the area so I stop here regularly. They have awesome coffee and delicious food. I personally love the breakfast burritos. The pastries are very good too. They also are great about me using my own cup as to not waste a plastic cup. Their back patio is quiet and inviting. I want to like this place. It's so close to my home. It has a backyard. They serve bagels (my love for bagels is strong) I have a lot of visitors who love coffee; I would love to recommend this place to them. I hesitate. Having said that: I did recommend it as a cafe with outdoor space to my most recent guest. She reported no negative experience. I use the KeyCafe on occasion. The only interaction I've had to have with the staff is to display my vaccination card and driver's license, in order to enter the space, and reach the keycafe box in the back. Unclear why it's necessary to display my I.D. to reach the keycafe box at the coffeeshop (by day), but fine. First two occasions: rude, slow staff. The most recent occasion (female bar person): pleasant and welcoming. I will revisit and edit in the future. read more

This is my partner & my local coffee shop that is around the corner from our flat. We usually go on weekends but with the pandemic, we go every single day! They have taken necessary precautions and have only opened the take out order windows for their customers and specify social distancing and mask wearing. Free wifi was the reason I came here. It's surprisingly hard to find a good place that serves food, coffee, has decent seating, and free wifi. The place is pretty spacious and there is a lot of tables. The tables are good sized and there are outlets with extension cords in between every seat so there's enough for everyone to plug in their laptop. What surprised me though was how good their food was! The sandwich I had (the turkey one) was delicious with warm bread and fresh ingredients. I'd actually come here for the food as well as the wifi. The drinks are good. Nothing out of the ordinary (I'm no coffee expert so I just judge based on flavors and unique drinks). Only small issue is that all the seats are really hard and uncomfortable. Came here to pick up a quick bite. I thought it was simply A-ok. I ordered the Avocado Toast. To be honest I think it's pretty ridiculous to charge $7 for avocado spread, goat cheese, cucumbers, olive oil, and red pepper flakes on top of one slice of bread. In terms of atmosphere, it's kind of a cool vibe. You can have coffee and beer at the same place! It's a bit too dimly lit for my liking though. I'd imagine it would be hard to study here but plenty of people were doing it. I haven't tried their coffee, will review once I have. read more

This place has very good coffee and food (re: fresh bagels) . They've also got a uniquely stocked bar. Service is reliably friendly, but speed and not-being-hungover can be hit or miss. This is above-average as far as independent coffee shops go. The interior seating was recently remodeled in an attempt to attract a more lively (and higher-margin) bar scene in the evenings. I think this is a great idea because it also increases the amount of seats available for single customers with laptops during the daytime. This change in scenery and a "no laptops after 8 pm" rule, however, has prompted backlash from the local coffee shop wi-fi trolls (as evidenced by several recent reviews). Here's what really matters: people who don't pay for wi-fi at home aren't spending much money while camped on their iMacs and killing the vibe for anyone who wants to have a drink and a conversation. The West is going to sell a lot more alcohol in the evenings because of this change and it's going to be better for everyone except the freeriders. read more

I'm a huge fan of the West. If you get a pumpkin spiced latte, get it from here. Only spot I'll drink one from. The mochas are delicious as well as their regular iced lattes! Great quality coffee. What is unique about this spot is it doubles as a full bar. A great memory from years ago is taking my friend visiting here to get us started with our day of sightseeing with some coffee. The barista discovered it was his first hours ever visiting New York, and at 10am gives us two shots on the house of Jameson! Above and beyond. It was incredible. We always talk about it. Their breakfast burrito with bacon is also so good, they've really perfected the simple yet delicious breakfast staple. It's not too big, just right. Great little coffee shop. read more

This bar gave us one of our favourite nights on a recent trip to Brooklyn. After going to the Then She Fell immersive theatre production around the corner (must see: so good) we settled here for a debrief which ended up being hours of drinking, good-times and music. Bar staff were super-cool and friendly (not standoffish hipsters like some Brooklyn bars) and they had a very decent range of beers available. Highlight though was a bunch of musicians rolling in from an open-mic night nearby who proceeded to have some awesome impromptu loose-bluesy-jams into the wee hours. They were seriously good, and having the whole bar partaking in a few sing-a-longs was a seriously good time. read more

This review is for the Sunday Waffle Brunch I had this past winter at West Cafe. At the time Chef Ayinde was guesting as the chef on site and I was inundated with emails/posts from my veggie brethren demanding that I go and check out the magic that was going down on the weekends at West Cafe! When I arrived I promptly had to make an ATM run as they do not accept credit cards (booo). Upon my return I put in my order for a Strawberry Shortcake Waffle, a side of Mac n' Yease, and a mimosa. I had an 8-mile hike to get to immediately following brunch so I happily made room for the plate of calories coming my way. Wow, Chef Ayinde sure didn't disappoint: Mac n Yease is so cheesy you will swear there's a block of cheese tucked in there. The waffles were dense and chewy with an avalanche of vegan whipped cream and strawberries--very good. I polished that all off with some mimosa activity (pretty standard--I would just go for the coffee). The next time I decided to hit west cafe up for some waffles---they were gone?! *manually snatching fourth star away* Overall nice, relaxed vibe--I'll be glad when they stabilize their menu situation. read more

I actually never came here prior to COVID even though I'm from the neighborhood but since the beginning of COVID, they were one of the few places serving coffee and food. They always had a long line so one day I decided to try the coffee and I have to say it's really tasty and strong. I've been there several times now and mostly order the cortado with soy milk. I have also ordered their vegan banana bread (which was one of the most delicious breads I've had) and have ordered the salmon lox bagel as well as the humus toast which is spicy. I remember the bagel being too bready and overpowered the cream cheese and salmon. And the hummus toast was wayyy too spicy. I didn't like it at all. Overall, I'd go back and continue to order the coffee and try different food. read more

Bright and (somewhat) early Monday morning this lovely cafe was open to save us from the meager post-holiday weekend pantry. Never mind that we had to hike several blocks in the post-Christmas blizzard snow-drift closed streets!! West Cafe had fresh coffee and even a few vegan baked treats to make the effort worthwhile. They even had cleared a path from the street to the door to make our trek inside that much easier. Obviously they take service and coffee seriously. It was appreciated!! THANK YOU!! The varieties of food offerings change up a bit but it's interesting stuff. I hope to catch brunch there sometime. I've heard rave reviews of the Bagel Brunch. Tables are eclectic but with plenty of workable outlets nearby. I didn't ever notice it being overly noisy (except once but that was overly loud-talking customers, can't fault the cafe for that). I came and sat after work one week because I needed a place to work on my freelance work and none of the coffee shops are usually open past 7. That's tough for someone who has a side gig but also works 10-6. Enter: The West. With a great selection of coffee AND cocktails, this place has it all. I stumbled on this place the other day when I was in the neighborhood and find myself with an extra hour to get some work done. I was pleasantly surprised with their food menu. Went here on a Sunday afternoon, Super hipstery bar and not in a great way. I appreciate what they're trying to do, mixing beer and coffee, but I sat down at the bar, which was empty except for one other person, and it took 10 minutes for one of the three bartenders to get to me. Also the menu was incorrect, and I wanted to white girl hard. The pumpkin beer that was listed on tap was not, in fact, on tap. Come onnnnn, it's October, I want my seasonal beer. I wait all year for it. I am shameless in my love for all things pumpkin. I digress. There weren't any TVs, and the back patio looked nice. Didn't try the coffee or food but both looked good as they passed by. Not sure what a vegan BLT is, but if you want one, this is your spot. I had the stout that was on tap, it wasn't particularly memorable, which is neither good nor bad. May return to this spot in the future. Not sure. A regular at The West for a number of years and Monday (8/4), I had the worst possible experience that has absolutely turned me off to the place. In the last couple of months, a number of new coffee spots have opened blocks away from their location. Once the wild, wild west of Brooklyn, Williamsburg has become gentrified with a Starbucks newly added to Grand Street. For those of you skimming this, my horrible experience can be summarized as snotty, hipster unprofessionalism. Normally the staff here is cheerful and friendly but this Summer there seems to have been a turnover of employees. On Monday, a guy with bleached hair and a new girl were behind the bar. I asked whether they had bacon because normally it is in serious demand and they run out. The girl responds "Oh, we don't DO bacon..." (Blank stare). I reply "Okay- that's weird." She says "You can look at this menu of new sandwiches." I ask "What kind of ham is in the ham sandwich." The guy from behind her "Uh- the pink kind. You know, from a pig." Girl (haha- then blank stare). I reply "Well, I was inquiring in case it was a special kind." *As a side note, there is no way the written word can convey the amount of disdain these two were emanating my way.* So I decide on trying the new salmon sandwich. $8 got me a small, premade, ice cold sandwich from the refrigerator with damp greens of some kind. You know the kind you try to bite and the bread won't rip because it has been in the fridge too long? Disgusting. I had my computer with me to do work; the main draw of the place is the expansive seating options for those working on laptops. The internet is not letting me connect so I return to the counter. In all the years that I have come here the staff has always been very friendly and approachable about resetting the router. With these two, OF COURSE, it's another epic story of nasty attitudes. After their insistence that "I just keep trying" and they "Don't want to click the button on the router to interrupt anyone else," which by the way is complete BS because other times willing-staff have done it with no problems and only success, I say "Well, I don't know if you guys realize the kind of energy you are putting out there but ever since I've walked through the door- you two have been very rude towards me and have made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable." At this point, the guy seems to wake up, apologizes and offers to reset the router. For this amount of hassle and trouble, I won't be coming back. I'll go to Gimme! I stopped by this place because I was in the area for a few hours and wanted to get some work done. With its cozy inviting atmosphere, this cafe seemed like a nice place to set up camp for the evening. I walked up to order a tea and the frumpy barista informed me that she'd be shutting off the wifi in about 15 minutes. Funny, I thought to myself, but seeing as how I didn't need wifi to complete my work, I sat down and took out my laptop anyway. The unpleasant young lady then walked up to me and told me that what she meant was "we don't want any laptops open now because a band is about to go on". Oh. Well that pretty much negated my entire purpose for coming to the cafe in the first place. I'd understand if there were a lot of people there for the show and they needed the standing space, but there were maybe 15 people tops in the entire cafe, and I'm pretty sure my laptop wouldn't have bothered anyone. I guess what took me aback was how rude and unpleasant the lady was, and how I wasn't offered a refund for my tea, which I clearly bought just so I could sit and get some work done. You ever have that dream where you're wearing a three-piece Savile Row suit (for some reason) and you walk into a cafe and lock eyes with a mysterious woman with an afro and a cherry-red sun dress and this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT2BloTgw7k) starts playing and everything moves in slow motion? I think this is the cafe in that dream. It's a combination bar/coffee shop which is great when you aren't sure if you wanna get buzzed up or down or both. They have kombucha on tap as well as a good little selection of drafts and a decent sandwich menu. When I came in it was very welcoming and the gentleman at the front counter answer my questions and helped me to make a decision. I would recommend this place. This is a hidden gem of a cafe. The space is cozy and there are plenty of seating areas to work, chat, or relax in. The staff is really friendly and happy to help you pick out your next drink. I've had a variety of espresso drinks but may favorite is actually their kombucha on tap. It's really hard to find it on tap and their pick is delicious. Bonus points for having a loyalty card! This is the best thing to happen to this side of the neighborhood in a long time. The coffee is great, the atmosphere is perfect, the staff is super friendly, they have FREE WI-FI with ample outlets and power strips for us computer junkies, and on weekends they do a special waffle brunch that is delicious. a beautiful little cafe and so happy it's here! also - its cash only - but these smartypants put a ATM right outside the door.
