Really disappointing. Beware of the salesman waiter! I was excited about eating lunch here. I looked at the menu ahead of time and noticed it was more affordable at lunch - that is if you don't order the "specials" the waiter insists upon! We tried to order a few dishes but he was pushy and insisted on the specials...they were okay but not amazing. Well, when our check came, the specials were double the price of the lunch items! Had I known this, I would've eaten elsewhere. I carefully consider where I'm eating on vacation and look at menus ahead of time. This restaurant should be upfront about the price of their "specials". It felt deceitful. Being our last meal in Ireland, I wish we would've chosen a different spot. read more

I've eaten here twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner. COST: Very, very reasonable, especially when you consider there is a BYOB policy WITHOUT CORKAGE! SURROUNDINGS: Not bad, pretty plain and simple with a mish mash of vintage items. Not very well put together, but equally it is not bad either. Its cosy and small and even though the tables are close together it is surprisingly private STAFF: Both times I found the staff friendly, helpful and they seemed to have a real joy for working in the place and genuinely appreciating their customers MENU CHOICE: Lots of choice but not too much. Something for everyone BOOKING: Impossible to get tables without booking for both lunch and dinner. However I reckon if you went in for a late lunch at about 2 or 3 you would easily be accommodated without a booking FOOD: For lunch I ordered the chowder and I was blown away. I am obsessed with chowder and am often disappointed, but not at the VC. I had also ordered a lamb shank for mains. I was horrified when I saw the size of the chowder. It was huge. I wanted to eat every scrap of it but felt I couldnt because I simply would not have been able to eat the main which I couldnt really cancel. The main was also huge. Over all The portions of food are too large, even for my husban who is a big man with a big appetite. If youre having lunch and if youre having the chowder, dont have anything else. I wasnt overly impressed by the dessert. In fact I found the chocolate dessert too sweet and lacking chocolate flavour and the fruit crumble too sharp Dinner, yet again could not resist the chowder. Its different every time. This time myself and my husband shared a chowder and so were both able to eat our mains no problem. I had ribeye. The best thing about the main was this little pot of spring onions and bacon in a kind of a creamy sauce. I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever eaten. It was the star of the dish! Again I was disappointed by the dessert. I didnt order one beccause I really was disappointed at my previous lunch. However my husband ordered dessert, cant even remember what it was. I had some of course but was glad I hadnt ordered one myself. OVERALL I ENJOYED THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE AND I WILL CERTAINLY BE RETURNING. IT IS GREAT VALUE, GREAT SERVICE, GENERALLY GOOD, GOOD FOOD AND THE CHOWDER IS TO DIE FOR. Favorite spot in Dublin. Getting a reservation can be very difficult, so plan ahead. Space is tiny, and it's BYO but they keep some beer and wine around if you forget. Food is amazing and service is just as good. read more

Very reasonable lunch for quality. I had the pan fried hake with gnocchi. It was in a soup/sauce with greens, cherry tomatoes, and mussels. I also suggest ordering the bread. This is a very small restaurant, so reservations, especially for dinner are recommended. At dinner, they have 2 seatings, 6pm and 8:30pm. read more

This is an absolute hidden gem in Dublin. Any time i mention it to people they don't seem to know it exists. Not in the best of locations but its worth the extra effort! The decor is nothing special and the place is tiny, with tables slightly on top of each other but it is all worth it because the food here is outstanding. I have been 3 times now and never has it disappointed. The highlight for me so far has been a smoked salmon risotto which will forever be on my list of best dishes I have ever had. BYOB and no corkage fee so I was sold on it before I event walked in the door. We brought some prosecco to start which they put in flutes. We then had starters of scallops or goats cheese salad, both of which were tasty and beautifully presented. For main, I had the special of Sea Bream and risotto. I had to de-bone the Seabream which I dont particularly enjoy when Im out for a meal. Dessert was beautiful and the atmosphere was warm and cosy. Tiny, with about 30 seats, I took a small group of Americans here for a good meal before they went home. We weren't disappointed and had a lot of fun with the menu and then a lot of fun with the food! Corkage is free so some of our party popped out to get wine in the local Spar. The food here was amazing. Being from New York I've eaten in the best restaurants. This place ranks at the top. Service was great. Open kitchen. They are so friendly and accommodating. I didn't have a lunch reservation and they got me in. It's packed for lunch and dinner. Make sure you have a reservation. The prawn risotto was splendid and the lamb shank was as well. For desert, you have to have the half baked chocolate cake with ice cream. This place is truly a gem. Compliments to the cooks and staff. read more

Best food we ate all week in Ireland. We had a very fulfilling lunch here and I believe this restaurant provides a great value at lunch time. Delicious, fresh, and great portion sizes. It's no surprise that VK are booked out until July 2015 (we found this out upon getting the check and inquiring about the next booking). 2 courses for €28 or 3 courses for €34. Small, quirky, retro, buzzing and casual bistro. We were seated at 8:20pm and by 8:30pm all 64 seats were full. The food was well presented, delicious and generous in portion size. It wasn't a case of "where is my food on this massive white plate?" that you may get in some Dublin restaurants. Three of us had the amazing smoked haddock chowder with chorizo and samphire which was a burst of contrasting flavours. Wow. One had hake wrapped in Parma with a side of a risotto ball. For mains, three of us enjoyed the succulent lamb shank with a medley of roasted veg. I loved how there were little 'blobs' of sauces around the plate such as mustard, wine reduction sauce and pesto! Our fourth diner had the dinner special, a pork belly which was eaten in its entirety. We shared one dessert- awesome boozy berry crumble. BYOW without corkage was a big bonus as the ENTIRE bill for 4 was only €131! You could spend this per person for an equivalent meal in Dublin with menu wine! Will return--- in July! :-) read more

From the outside, it does not seem to be much, but the menu is really unique and the food lives up to (and exceeds) the description on the menu. Soup was great. So were the mushrooms. They don't serve alcohol, but you can order from Mulligan's next door, which just adds to the novelty. read more

Spending some days on holiday in Dublin from the NYC area. This place is amazing and I'm sure to dream about this place. The seafood risotto, the haddock, the cod, the lamb shank... Believe the reviews. We had to "settle" on lunch as I only tried making a reservation one month out. Great food, great staff and reasonable prices. Lunch servings were huge. Quality was excellent. Disgusting!!! I went for lunch with a friend recently having had a great experience on my last visit, I so was really looking forward to eating here again. We had a later sitting for lunch so some of the menu options weren't available which was fine. When were arrived we were welcomed by a VERY loud man whose was friendly but a tad over animated. The table we sat at was beside a wall that was covered in flies. In fact I spent the whole of my lunch swatting them away! It makes you wonder about the hygiene of the place. We both had muscles to start which tasted nice at the time but sat on my stomach afterwards and which made my friend sick when she got home. My menu stated that my main dish had chorizo in it, which was fine, but it completely overpowered that rest of the dish to the extent that I could not taste anything else. So I sent the it back and when I explained why I couldn't eat it to the waitress she became very rude (having been pleasant earlier) and remained that way for the rest of our lunch.At that stage we just wanted to leave. All in all this was an extremely unpleasant and expensive lunch and needless to say I will not be going back. Avoid! read more
