Hi, I have noticed a lot of billboards up around Austin these days regarding Buckner Villas Alzheimer care unit (it used to be called "the Harbor"), and I just want to say run as fast and as far as you can from this place. In my opinion, the staff is lazy and disinterested in the residents once the bosses are gone (i.e. nights and weekends)...
We had my mom in there for a few months, and she suffered a broken hip within a month. I realize that elderly people fall, but I feel that we were misled by Buckner at every step of the way.
When I saw how bad she was after her fall (mainly because she hit her face when she fell), I demanded that she be taken to the hospital. I was about to call 911 when they were like "can we call a private ambulance for you? It will be much quicker". I said OK, as it sounded reasonable at the time, but I believe they handled it in this manner so that it wouldn't negatively impact their rating with DADS. Also, they claimed that they had a nurse perform an evaluation after her fall, but in my opinion, the evaluation was an exercise in CYA. I saw another resident fall after my mom's fall, and the procedure that I witnessed was that the resident was lying on the floor for a few minutes before an aide noticed, the nurse came by and performed a perfunctory evaluation, and the resident was deemed fit. For the next 2 or 3 days, the resident who fell was in rough shape. I thought that she might have suffered a concussion, but hey, I'm not a nurse or medical professional, so I may have been mistaken. Obviously the crack staff at Buckner deemed her fit, so she must have been!
While my mom was there, I personally know of 3 other falls, 1 of which resulted in the resident winding up in a wheelchair. Buckner never reported the falls to DADS. I believe that since no call was made to 911, then it never happened, so Buckner doesn't have to report it. (I know they didn't report the other falls because when I called DADS to file a complaint against Buckner, DADS informed me that there were no falls with injuries reported by Buckner)
I looked into suing them, but since there is a cap on negligence suits, the lawyers that I spoke to didn't believe it was worth their time (financially speaking). The reason I believe that DADS didn't substantiate my complaint was because Buckner is a confusing place, I believe DADS went to the wrong unit (the campbell center). Also, it was explained to me by DADS that cases ending in death get much higher priority and more resources. I guess a broken hip for an elderly person isn't that big a deal to DADS...
There are other Alzheimer care places in Austin, please check them out prior to sending your loved ones to one. Go see them after hours when no managers are around and see how the staff is, are they sitting around doing homework, talking on the phone, reading the newspaper, or are they paying attention to your relative? Do you observe residents walking around unaccompanied? If your loved one is ambulatory, this may be a fall hazard...
Lastly, the nursing home section seems well run (I believe it is called the Campbell Center), and I'm sure the regular assisted living part is fine too. (otherwise the resident would leave, right?) This review only applies to the Alzheimer care facility within the larger Buckner campus, it was known as the Harbor. Not sure about the new place, I have no intention of having anything to do with these folks ever again! read more
