My family experienced repeated problems with severe understaffing that appeared to affect nearly every aspect of patient care. At times, it seemed there was only one nurse or aide responsible for as many as 17 patients. Whether that was the official staffing ratio or not, the level of care reflected a facility stretched far beyond its limits. The most upsetting experience was waiting well over an hour after using the call light for help with toileting. By the time anyone responded, my family member had already soiled herself. We ended up providing the care ourselves most of the time because we could no longer depend on timely assistance. On another occasion, a broken bathroom call light left her stranded for approximately 45 minutes, forcing her to attempt an unsafe transfer on her own and creating a serious fall risk. Unfortunately, these were not isolated incidents. During visits, I regularly saw multiple call lights going unanswered, families wandering the halls searching for help, and patients waiting far too long for basic care. At one point, while patients were waiting for assistance, several staff members were gathered in a back room eating together, leaving the floor seemingly unattended. Employees need to stagger breaks. The food was another major disappointment. This facility promotes itself as a high-end rehabilitation center, yet meals were consistently poor quality and lacked the fresh, nutritious foods patients need to heal. My family often felt compelled to bring outside meals, yet there wasn't even a microwave available for reheating food. I was also concerned by several operational issues, including the use of a shared open ice cooler instead of a more sanitary dispensing system. Delays in laboratory testing that could impact dialysis patients, where timely lab results are critical for safe treatment. There was no onsite lab and lab results were not posted or available for 2 days. What saddened me most was seeing vulnerable patients--including veterans and retired healthcare professionals--left waiting for basic needs such as toileting, hygiene, and assistance. No one recovering from surgery, illness, or dialysis should have to worry whether help will come in time. I understand that healthcare facilities everywhere face staffing challenges, but patients and their families deserve safe, compassionate, and timely care. My hope is that management addresses the chronic understaffing and operational shortcomings so future residents receive the level of care this facility promises. They enjoyed the friends they made, the activities they were afforded, the excellent food created right there on the property with excellent chefs and kitchen staff and access to all manner of activities from a Military Ball for resident veterans to trips out an about the Austin area. LGV has Independent Living apartments as well as an attached Assisted Living section for those times when a little extra help is needed. The staff is caring of the residents and very protective - try to get into that place today without a mask.... I highly recommend LHV as a place to set down roots in your later days.

Unless a family member can be there day and night to advocate for your loved one, they may be left sitting in a wet brief, not fed when they require assistance, and isolated behind a closed door. Call buttons often went unanswered, and our loved one was not consistently repositioned or changed in a timely manner. Staffing appeared inadequate on both weekdays and weekends, but the weekends felt like a ghost town. When a medical concern arose, it seemed the immediate response was to send the resident to the hospital instead of first attempting to address the issue in-house. We were then expected to pay approximately $500 per night privately to hold the room during the hospital stay. Otherwise, we were told the resident's belongings could be packed up and the bed released. Families need to ask about this policy and understand the financial consequences in advance. Based on our experience, the facility seemed far more focused on revenue than on attentive, compassionate care or meaningful rehabilitation. We entered with the hope that our loved one would receive consistent care and therapy and regain strength. Instead, we felt we had to monitor every aspect of the care ourselves. Please visit frequently, ask detailed questions, get all financial policies in writing, and do not assume that a beautiful facility guarantees quality care. Beware of the caring and patient demeanor prior to intake - it all falls apart once they have you there. You have 5 days to show that you can do rehab ad then they start charging private pay at $15,500. This is a journey to say the least and I am hopeful that y'all do not have to go through the skilled nursing circus we have been through - they call it "skilled nursing", but they have 1 nurse and the rest are care workers who know very little.

Heartland wasn't a perfect match for Mom, but it was a great match. I checked Mom in based on prior reviews, so I had high expectations. There were some bumps along the way, but I was really impressed with how dedicated the people were to meeting Mom's needs, making her comfortable, and resolving any issues that came up. Mom spent about three months at Heartland paid for by Medicare as rehab and about three months self-pay in their nursing care. It's all the same care, it's just a matter of who is paying. She spent a week on their assisted living floor trying to live independently, but it just didn't work. What I was struck by, at all levels, was how approachable everyone was. From the aides to the administrator, everyone was there for Mom and for our family. I wish I could name each of their names (I have them all written down here somewhere), but I'd miss someone important and I don't want to do that. More than anything else, Mom wanted to get back to her apartment at her old assisted living center, but Heartland took much better care of her and she was just too ill to return to her old lifestyle. Ultimately, Mom died at Heartland. I could wish for a better ending to her story, but not a better ending to her life. She died comfortably, loved, and well taken care of. Thank you Heartland and each of you who worked with Mom. I would have no hesitation recommending Heartland. Visit for yourself. The Skilled Nursing Section of the facility is managed cohesively, with a strong underpinning of compassion and motivation to achieve individual goals for their patients. Despite COVID, they never compromised the level of care, ever. We are very grateful to have leaned of this facility and sad to see my mother-in-law leave. I would go so far as to say they have treated our family like family. Cora in admissions worked with us to explain the finances and answer all questions. She's stepped back in when finances became tighter. Amber, the Executive Director has always shown us kindness and compassion and gone to bat for our family. The maintenance staff got Grandpa's TV working a few times so he could continue to watch his baseball. They then moved Grandpa's hospital bed over to Grandma's room and set it up for us when he passed. Sandra, the director of the Memory Care Unit is such a loving leader to the residents and her staff. The Christmas party for residents, staff and family was so generous and fun. It's so hard to not be able to see Grandma in person because of COVID-19 and it makes it even more important to know that the staff in the memory care unit treats Grandma as if she were their own Grandma. I thank the Lord that we found them.

Never called her vulnerable 71-year-old daughter/caretaker to let her know, had no signs on her door, and the caseworker had no idea. The absence of a Quarantine sign allowed my sister to walk right in, find our mother unshowered and throwing up (had thrown up all night). They reported she had been taken to breakfast and lunch amongst the other patients. Terrible protocol.

They brought me to a small room with a bed that had no rails and very little support. The feel was like a hammock, not good for someone right out of the hospital. I was on a restrictive diet yet the first night I was there I was given steak cut up and some sort of sweet potato. I ate it, I was so hungry. A day went by and the next morning I was told they were calling an ambulance to take me back to the emergency room. I had blockage in the intestines. (This was reason for my emergency surgery in the first place!) My biggest complaint was my medications were supposed to be sent to them when I left the hospital. When I inquired, they didn't have them. I had my last pain pill at 2:00 that afternoon. It was now 9:00 p.m., I was told I would have to wait until the pharmacy opened the next morning. I had an incision down the middle of my abdomen and nothing for pain. Horrible and incompetent!! I was finally given medication for the pain 9:30 that morning. I couldn't sleep the pain was so intense. Around 3:00 am I called for the nurse, I was in tears and covered with sweat, my hospital gown and sheets were soaked, and I was chilly. The person who finally came told me they had no other clothes for me to wear. No offer to change the sheets, she got another blanket and threw it over me. The fastest response time was 20 minutes, I know because I watched the clock. I felt frightened and trapped when that door closed, no one came and checked on me on a regular basis. When I was readmitted to the hospital, I felt such relief! I would be taken care of and no longer felt afraid. Be very careful where you send your loved ones.
