The Conservatory is Austin's best and most affordable option for mid-grade independent living for seniors. Every resident has their own apartment with a communal dining room (adjusted for Covid), transportation, group activities, and amenities such as a senior-focused gym, movie theater and dog park. And they have safety features such as wearable alarms, and wellness checks if residents don't open their door by noon. Our mother has been there for 4 years and it has been a great place for her. Most other places cost more and offer less. I looked at every other option in town, and you would have to pay significantly more (like $2-3,000 a month more) at a luxury facility to get better accommodations and services. Meals are included, but residents do have full kitchens and most will buy some of their own food. The cafeteria food quality can go up and down, especially with Covid. Generally, the management is responsive to any concerns you may have and will work with you to resolve issues. They always seem to do their best to see that residents are happy.

I am the Business Office Manager here at the Conservatory at North Austin (TX). I will celebrate my 1st-year work anniversary in early May 2022. I have worked in the Senior Living industry for 4 years. I feel that this is a spectacular independant living community, with a stellar staff, dedicated to quality customer service. We each work hard to ensure the happiness and comfort of the residents The company, Discovery Senior Living, has nearly three decades of experience owning, operating, and managing successful, award-winning senior living communities, of which The Conservatory at North Austin is one. Come for a visit, tour the community, have lunch and talk with our residents. You'll love it! I do!

I decide to write this review as a warning to any prospective employees. The residents are great, but if you end up working for JACK the Food Service Director, you will soon regret it. HE IS A COMPLETE BULLY. He is extremely condescending and incredibly immature for an [old] 65 year old man. Many people who work under him readily admit how much they hate working for him which is why the kitchen can't keep anyone.

The time had come. My elderly, disabled veteran father was no longer in the shape to live alone in a drafty old farmhouse in rural East Texas. Maintaining the multi-acre yard, making endless home repairs, and dealing with general upkeep around the property had become unworkable. Declining health (especially vision, hearing, and balance) were making driving a dangerous proposition, and the lack of reliable health care providers in close proximity meant many missed appointments due to absence of safe transportation to caregivers over 45 miles away. Social isolation and risk of serious injury was growing. Most importantly, no responsible blood relatives who cared to help lived within a 5 hour radius. Something had to change. After months of gentle persuasion (and after a few serious falls), Dad finally agreed to come to Austin to be near his children and grandchildren, but only on the the condition that his new apartment home provided as much privacy & independence as he desired. As his kids, our conditions were that the place be convenient for us to access, offer onsite transportation & enrichment activities, have staff members like angels, and provide a community of seniors who were clearly very happy to live there. We searched for weeks and visited several options in the Austin area, but nothing could top what we found at The Conservatory at Wells Branch. Here is just a sample of the amenities included with their inclusive monthly apartment rental fee: --gated parking area --secure entry/exit system with key fobs for automatic door opening --24/7 concierge service --24/7 alert pendant for falls and other non-911 situations --onsite home health services (for those with doctor's orders) --30 gourmet meals per month in the elegant dining hall --daily continental breakfast and happy hour in the bistro --weekly housekeeping services --basic cable TV --gym & fitness classes tailored to elders --outdoor pool --game room with regular card & domino matches --library, lounge, salon (with fee-based services via contracted operator), and business center onsite --movie theater with regular screenings of new films, sporting events, etc. --onsite church services on Sundays, one Catholic, one nondenominational --weekly outings via 21 passenger van for shopping, cultural events, and entertainment --transportation via town car for medical appointments within a 25 mile radius --monthly live performing arts from local musicians and others When visiting, we were impressed with how many different residents came over to chat with us to describe their positive experiences living there. Some we met had lived there more than 5 years and stated that they'd never want to live anywhere else. All of the staff members we met were invariably friendly, patient, and kind, but their job was to sell us on this place, so the resident testimonials held more sway. After checking out the property and seeing the 690 square-foot single bedroom apartment that would become Dad's, we enjoyed a great meal in the dining hall, which is staffed by a chef and students from a local culinary school. Observing so many happy seniors going about their days, as independent as they wanted to be in a range of health & mobility, gave us further confidence that this was really the right place for Dad. An important question was cost. In our family's case, we found the monthly expense to be significant, but reasonable when all of the services and amenities were considered. We were able to negotiate a 20% discount by signing a 2 year lease and locking in that rate for the first 24 mos. See listing on Caring.com for basic pricing info. Also worth mentioning: the fact that 3 of us siblings who agree on almost nothing could present a unified front of support for Dad's move to the Conservatory was itself a minor miracle and says a great deal about how fantastic this place is. It's been about a month now since he moved in, and I'm so thankful that we were able to find such a wonderful place in which our patriarch can thrive through his golden years with lowered stress and higher joy. It has been a relief to now be able to see him almost every day, and to know that even when I'm not there, he has several levels of care available to him on his terms. Best of all, I know that I'm now not alone in sharing the burden of his care, as I have a team of caring staff and neighbors to help me keep an eye on my dad's day-to-day well-being. They even give him a call each day if his door hasn't been opened by noon just to say hello and ensure that he's okay. The Conservatory is family owned, with senior apartment living communities for ages 55 plus in Austin, Keller, Spring, Plano, and The Woodlands. Additional amenities are available for a fee, such as covered parking, private garages, and more. We were told it is never to early to start looking, and I wanted my mother to have a say in where she goes. This process is so overwhelming. Angel (same name as me, hehehe) the Executive Director is very knowledgeable. She was honest and upfront. She cared more about my mother then trying to make a sale. She gave us advise, and told us things to specifically ask for when touring facilities. The staff were warm and friendly, everyone had a smile on their face. We came at the perfect time and were able to participate in the ladies tea club. I was so surprised to see how many residents lived there that didn't appear to have dementia, that really put my mother at ease too. Some places we toured everyone seemed very far advanced, and it really scared us. My mother and I both sat in the car crying after one tour. When we left Colonial Gardens we felt good, like there is hope at the end of this dark tunnel. When the time comes, we will be back. I posted some photos so you can see how great it looks.

There are more and more Alzheimer stories that we all hear but now, I know first hand, just how horrific the whole situation is. Not can be, might be, IT IS AWFUL FOR EVERYONE! We visited all available facilities in our area and feel so very fortunate to have discovered Colonial Gardens. I wish that I had the know how and or/skills to get the word out about this facility because with the increase in numbers coming our way, there should be more built like them! The place has only 16 residence. It is modeled after a home of the era of the residence early life. They all have their own room and bathroom. They are given private showers. They share a nice cozy living room on one side with a large dinning room on the other. A deck and beautiful backyard are off the dinning room. There is lots of outside light shinning thru and the place is absolutely always clean. Upon entering there is always a pleasant aroma or you smell something good cooking for mealtime. We have been with them for almost one full year now. We are a very large family so my father has at least one visitor every single day so we feel comfortable that his care is consistent and good. We learned of the great difficulties of the disease from the years of home care prior to his move to Colonial. Therefore, we have great respect and deep appreciation for the folks who choose to work in this profession. Unfortunately, there is frequent turnover in the staff because the industry does not at this time, adequately compensate these professionals. We are fortunate at Colonial, because the management works hard to find folks that bring a good work ethic and a good heart with them every day. I do hope that as a society, we get this corrected soon. While I absolutely hate that my father is not at home with us, I know he is actually receiving better care than we did and or could provide him at home. He is moving thru his days at his own pace, doing what he wants to do and he is safe, content and cared for my many.

I waited months for my appointment, only to find that the doctor was unable to open Longhorn MRIs during the visit because she doesn't know her access code. She was able to login into longhorn but didn't know how to zoom or view the images, battling with her computer keys. This was very frusterating because why am I here if you cant even open and read MRIs?? I was told I would receive a follow-up once she gained access, but its been 4 weeks and I haven't heard anything. She stated that my EMG results from another provider "chart did not match the summary" and she made an order to go redo it! I sought a second opinion at UT, where I was told the results were, in fact, consistent. She prescribed me medication and warned me that it might cause alertness and difficulty sleeping. However, I experienced the opposite effect and became extremely sleepy and miserable all day. After two weeks of being drowsy, miserable and ignored and chasing, I finally received a response via EMAIL stating that the medication would cause sedation --contradicting what she originally told me with NO further guidance!!!! I asked if she can prescribe me something else?? and its been 2 weeks.. GHOSTED AGAIN. It has now been four weeks, and I still have not received an after-care summary, any update regarding my MRI, or guidance about adjusting the medication. Communication from the office has been a depressing degrading nightmare. The first week was the hardest nobody was answering the phones or calling back, my follow-up appointment was delayed from four to five weeks as a result. It also took nearly two weeks just to receive information about accessing the patient portal, which does not even allow direct messaging with the doctor, you must go through the front desk via email! I noted "prefer not to disclose" under ethnicity on my intake forms, but she asked about the origin of my last name. This made me uncomfortable and makes me wonder if this extreme neglect is due to racism because I do not understand the good reviews. When you are dealing with a medical issue, every single day matters because it could bring you closer to getting better, yet I have now spent 4 weeks being ignored, without guidance, medication, just sitting here wasting time!!! This is no way to treat people who are vulnerable!! This place wasted my time off of work and money. Thank god I made a back-up appointment with Ascension neurology.
