This is a good place for a family meal for a bit of entertainment with the Teppan grill. The food is what you would expect. I had salmon, steak and shrimp and they were cooked well. No special flavors or ingredients, just cooked on the grill in front of you. The service was pretty slow. We were craving late night sushi and this was one of our only options for takeout. We called to order and the food was ready within 20 minutes. We ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box and a few rolls. The chicken bento was a good portion, and it came with rice, stir fry veggies, fried dumplings, salad, miso soup, and California rolls. The bento was good but the chicken had a bit of a Smokey flavour. We also ordered a spicy salmon maki, and a green dragon roll. The total for our order was just under $50. I am weary to write a review having only been once and I can't imagine it due to the cooked food so I can only assume it was due to the raw fish. Ambience is alright, restaurant in a strip plaza, interior is simple, there are regular tables for sit down dining and there is one teppanyaki table that seats 16, 4 per side. Not a fancy place but good ambience overall. We ordered the For 2: $83 steak, shrimp, lobster tail, chicken combo. It comes with fried rice, salad, miso soup, and ice cream. Also ordered some sashimi and an avocado and cucumber roll for the kid. Fried rice was super tasty. Green salad was pretty good, Miso soup was ok. There were lots of food in comparison to other teppanyaki experiences. The steak was a lil tough but tasty, chicken was amazingggg, lobster was good and plentiful, shrimp was tasty. Heck even the bean sprouts were tasty! Service was pretty good, though only one or two servers at a time so when it gets busy lots of yelling in the kitchen. We ate a lot. The Kid ate lots during dinner too and loved the roll and the cooked food. Sashimi cuts were thick and overly chunky. Tasted ok but yeah yummy trouble after. Do not waste your money coming here for Teppanyaki. There was no interaction from the chef whatsoever. No fire, no tricks, no "dancing" with the knives, no acknowledgement from the chef that we were at the table other than putting food on our plates. The food was overly salty and small in portion. Due to the size of our group there was an automatic 15% tip added to our bill. Booked for my daughter's 15th bday with 3 of her friends. They required a min charge of 25.00 per person, so we found when we started ordering. We obliged understanding it is premium seating. Service - not personable, kept telling me to order more without even knowing I wanted spring rolls and edamame too. We were not even asked if we wanted another drink. I'm also sure they talked about us in Cantonese, you get a feeling when they giggle and banter in front of you. Then we got hit with a $40.00 service above the $213 meal order. Sat at the teppanyaki table for my birthday dinner, loved the fact that the chef cooks right in front of the table. This element makes you feel like you're experiencing an authentic Japanese dining occasion. Had the jumbo shrimp and steak dinner combo, came with salad (fantastic dressing), miso soup (average), stir fried veggies (great), and fried rice. Both the shrimp and the steak were great. Food was very good, however didn't match the traditional Japanese vibe the chef provided. This could have been a personal issue I found, but the teppanyaki menu didn't seem to provide us with many options that would have made us feel like we were dining in Tokyo. This issue does not take away from the deliciousness of the food... however I can't help but think that if they wanted to provide you with a traditional Japanese dining experience, they should have picked a genre of food that supports that intention. read more

Visited this place today for lunch with my wife. I think this restaurant name should be changed as The Villa fast food. Food is decent but the service is THE WORST. We placed ordered yellow tail sashimi, chicken beef tepanyaki and salmon teriyaki meal. All the food was good and enjoyable but the server ruined our mood. From the start to the end, she was just cold and rude. She doesn't come around and check what we need or how the food is. She was looking her phone chatting with her coworker while I was trying to have the eye contact to place an order for take out. I ended up giving up to get her attention. She as a server makes me annoyed that looking for a tip but doesn't cares about customers. Food comes from kitchen, delivered to the table , doesn't care about customers , once the customers leave, clean the table. After living in downtown Toronto and having the luxury of experiencing some great sushi houses, I didn't know what to expect from a place in Whitby. I was pleasantly satisfied by The Villa and I will be back. The portion sizes were beyond satisfying and the flavours were surprisingly good. They could be compared to a good sushi house in Toronto. One area I feel needed some additional attention was the tightness of the rolls. I prefer to have my sushi be tightly packed and remain in tact while trying to eat it. It was pretty damn good. I love the Villa!!!! I have been going to the Villa for the past couple of years and it never disappoints. The food is always fresh and delicious, and just as Shawn S. mentioned, there are many choices for those who don't like raw fish. My friends and I meet there all the time and have a great time chatting while feasting on our sushi and drinking a glass of wine. I love all of the sushi dishes I have tried (spicy salmon and tuna rolls, yellowtail sashmi, dragon roll, and the japanese fried rice is the best!!) The service is excellent and if you have a large group and reason to celebrate, then make a reservation to sit at the table where the chef will prepare your meal right before your very eyes. Employee's did not clear any dishes and were eating chicken feet next to us, while serving us and were talking with food in their mouths to customers. The I enjoyed was the steak. I've been going to the Villa for years and have always loved their sushi but yesterday our office had our Christmas lunch there (as we have done in the past) and the experience was terrible. We had made a reservation for our large group so we could all sit at the teppanyaki table (it was made clear prior to our arrival that a few of us were not ordering from the teppanyaki menu). Once all of our group arrived, the server constantly told us we had to order from the teppanyaki menu if we all wanted to sit at the table, and when some of us ordered sushi, she proceeded to make our group change seats so all of the sushi eaters were in one corner and the teppanyaki eaters were together. This happened a few times as people ordered. It was ridiculous, we should've been able to sit in whichever chair we wanted to instead of having to move. The server was rude and made the whole experience awful, fortunately the food was good. read more

Not impressed. I was referred to this sushi restaurant by several people. Someone said it was as good as sushi in Vancouver so of course we needed to try it. We went on valentines day so maybe the high volume decreased the quality. There other sushi restaurants in the area that are as good but less expensive like sushi motion and takemono. I have probably eat at The Villa more than any other restaurant in Whitby. Possibly more than any other restaurant, period. In my experience it's rare for a restaurant to put out food this consistent but I feel like I have been going there for ten years or so and I have never had a bad meal. It's the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to and I have been to a few. I'm vegetarian so my go-tos are any of the spicy rolls--avocado, broccoli and asparagus. All amazingly good. Always fresh. I've yet to find another sushi restaurant that even comes close. Also great are the croquette, agetofu and tofu steaks--all delicious. The spring rolls are good and remind me of mini Indonesian lumpia. And the edamame is...well. Edamame. It's good but there's only so much you can do with it. The service here is always friendly and attentive. It's always clean. I never feel rushed to leave. The only negative thing I can say is that it's not closer to where I live. read more

It is a huge amount of food. Menu says don't share the tepanyaki because it's calculated for one person... I should have shared. Chef is amazing and so is the food. Hot table and sushi both. The "villa sushi" is the most delicious one I have probably ever tried. Only bad thing, the waitress was incredibly rude. Believe it or not, she actually shushed me when I was trying to clarify an order for her because we were a big party (I thought I was helping, I'm a server too). My favourite dish hands down is the spicy asparagus rolls. If you haven't tried them, do it. Amazing! The only beef I have is they take forever to give you the bill. I went into my car and waited, after 5 min, went back in the restaurant only see the staff all standing around the section that they make the sushi almost every staff there was digging their nose. One guy I had my eye on him, he was digging and rolling whatever come out of his nose, then he flicked it. This is one place I always visit when I'm home spending time with the family. We actually remember the owner who was a waiter at our old favorite sushi joint, and when he mentioned to us that he was starting his own place (around the time when the quality was starting to slide) we promised him to check it out. Five years later and this is the place for my mom, cousins and me! I strongly STRONGLY recommend the spicy avocado roll. It is thick and velvety, and there is no fish, so it is a good introduction to people who are "new to sushi and scared to try", and the flavors are spot-on. Everything is good here, and I've even had some of their cooked items, like the lunch curry, and it was filling and enjoyable. I came here to eat with my family. The food was delicious and I wanted to try the hibachi table. I ordered the steak bento box and it came with California roll, vegetable / shrimp tempura, and spring rolls. A lot of variety and very filling! I would come back to eat for sure. Only downside is that they do not have any activities available for children. My nephew was kind of bored waiting for the food to come. Also, the service was pretty terrible. The servers just didn't seem to understand the concept of serving, like making room at the table and not expecting the customer to make room. And also, don't put hot soup in front of a toddler. Went here based on reviews. Restaurant was empty we were only ones there which made me suspicious. Friendly and nice staff but food was a huge disappointment. Maki rolls were cold. So could have went to metro. And steak was so hard and fatty we couldn't eat it. Iced tea not Cold. No napkins until asked. First and last time to eat here.
