    Sushi & sashimi
    Daniel T.

This place has now changed it's name to makimono. I came in for dinner all you can eat (which is usually better than lunch all you can eat) & out of all the Makimono locations I've been to (pickering & ajax) this place is hands down the best location. The sashimi is nice and buttery with the right amount of fat content. The fried rice was perfectly done, it complements all the side dishes well - especially the chicken teriyaki. The sushi and maki rolls were okay, nothing special without soy sauce and wasabi. The staff at this location are pretty nice. They are all attentive for refills, quick with serving food, and friendly.

Update: we frequent here enough to know that the quality has gone down and is really hit or miss. The service honestly sucks, they servers don't really greet you or do a good job with customer service. They're attentive, sure, but that's really the bare minimum when you're attending to people through their orders via an iPad. The quality of sashimi has gone down; they have squid sashimi which is nice but their salmon is often not as fresh even for ayce quality. Disappointing because this is still probably one of the better places for sushi, but certainly isn't amazing, even for Durham.

Tatemono-new Makimono Worst place ever I don't want to say something bad so I just say don't even go there the worst service ever...... you can see they don't like their work food was so so ..... Never again

Tatemono gives lunch menu and charges double for dinner. Shameful. Manager Vincent calls me a liar. Nice.

So we came in tonight and we're given the lunch menu even after asking why the options were limited. They never answered. So we filled up on the lunch menu (15.99) but have been charged 27.99 each because they can't change the price now! Vincent the uncaring manager did nothing but call me a liar for the situation. I eat here 4-5 times a month with work and will be no more. Absolutely atrocious customer service. Tatemono should be ashamed.

In the mood for some good Japanese cuisine Tatemono pops into my head and I instantly need to fulfill my craving. Came in on Saturday night around 6pm and the restaurant is starting to fill up. The hostess asks if we want the AYCE or regular menu. I never order the AYCE here .... maybe I will one day but for now Regular menu it is. ***So Update - The last time I was here the water tasted like poison HOWEVER I have to say it tasted muchhhh better now and props to Tatemono for adding lemon to the water as well. I know I want a Bento Box (more bang for your buck) so I instantly flip to that section of the menu. I decide to go with Bento Box D which also comes with miso soup, salad, rice and fruits. BENTO BOX D $13.49 2 pcs shrimp and 5 pcs vegetable tempura, 1 pcs tuna sashimi, 2 pcs salmon sushi, 3 pcs California roll, 3 pcs gyoza, Choice of teriyaki salmon, chicken or beef I love the salad here it's served ice cold and the lettuce is always fresh and crispy and by far the best dressing at any asian resto I've ever tasted! Next comes out the sushi portion of the bento box which is plated separately. California rolls are prefect, salmon sushi fresh as it comes and the tuna sashimi equally fresh with no fishy taste. And then my heavenly bento box arrives. I decide to go with the beef teriyaki. I love that they ask you how you would like your beef cooked. Out it comes a heaping pile of beef cooked perfectly medium rare in that delicious teriyaki glaze not too sweet loved every bite. The tempura this time was soo crispy as were the gyozas perfectly cooked. We also decided to order an appetizer of Beef Skewers (3pc) - Skewered beef tenderloin glazed w/ teriyaki sauce The beef was really tender and delicious but had I realized we were getting such an ample portion of beef in our bento box I would have skipped this. Overall a fantastic meal! Service here is really good as all the waiters circle around and are able to assist you at anytime. They are always good at removing plates and keeping your glasses full. Portions here are huge which is why I don't feel the need to order off the AYCE menu. I definitely will be back the next time my Japanese cravings strike!

We opted to not go AYCE which is always a good idea when you have a 2.5 hour movie after. Here's a tip if you order a dynamite roll for $6.99 just get one order if you are average hungry as the rolls are HUGE! About twice the size of the AYCE version. We also had the $12 bento which they forgot to bring the Miso soup and salad and didn't know what type of fish they were serving. Service today was also pretty slow given that they were not that busy.

    You know what this is.

No good. Expensive, but the quality is no better than you can get at the grocery store.

Food lacked flavour and freshness. The only shining light was Basil Chicken. However it was cold. Food came fast and furious.

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The TakoYaki was soft and loaded with the delicious sauce. The Gyoza were enormous. We were both 100% satisfied with our visit and will be back for sure.

The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. It was a larger bowl than their regular size and my ramen came topped with lots of corn, some mushrooms, bean sprouts and 6 large pieces of chasu. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.
