We've been loyal customers for over five years, but after eating their usual chicken fried rice tonight, both of my children became violently ill within 30 minutes. When I called the restaurant to report what appeared to be food poisoning, the manager showed no concern, offered no apology, and simply asked, "What do you want me to do?" He dismissed the issue because no one else had complained. Due to this alarming lack of accountability, I will be notifying the health department for proper investigation. read more

Came to this AYCE sushi spot after a day of snowboarding. We were a group of 8 and we made reservations beforehand. The restaurant is a decent size but if you're planning to come in a bigger group I would suggest reservations as this place was more than half full when we got there. This spot is pretty comparable to any AYCE sushi spot (quality, price, menu). We went on a Saturday night so we were able to try some of their weekend/holiday specials. Those were by far the best rolls on the menu! All in all, this sushi spot was pretty regular and if I were really craving sushi and I was in the area I would probably visit this spot again. read more

In short - regular dishes seem good, but avoid the sashimi. Delivery is sometimes cash only, which detracts me from ordering - make sure to clarify on the phone! The good: -Beef short ribs are excellent! The flavour will kick you in the pants, and I will order exclusively for this. One time the meat was more chewy, but I'll go back nonetheless. -Pan fried udon: good, a safe bet. Chow mein flavour & comes with miso soup. -Black bean chicken: a little salty, but good. The ugly: Sashimi offerings were pretty terrible. Ordered the Sashima Combo B (tuna(s), salmon, tai, butterfish, hokigai & tako). Most of them tasted overly fishy or had that slight tang. I will generally demolish 30-40 pieces of sashimi in a sitting, so I gave it a fair shot, but I just could not continue. Came here on recommendation from a friend and was not disappointed. One of my favourite restaurants of any kind in the Durham region. The food is delicious, I've already tried lots on the menu and it all tastes great. Plenty to choose from, and very reasonable pricing, especially the $11.75 lunch all-you-can-eat. The staff are very friendly and attentive, you don't feel rushed, and it is a pleasant atmosphere. If you're a fan of Azian Cuisine in Oshawa (another great restaurant), consider coming here instead. Tokushima is my go to craving food. The decor of the restaurant let's you know that you are in for some traditional Japanese food and also a fun experience to share with friends or family. I am a huge fan of all Asian food culture and of all the places I've had it this is my favourite. They serve fresh, affordable and delicious foods that everyone can enjoy. Some of my favourites are the beef teriyaki, tempura calamari, and the pork wonton soup among many others. Of course the restaurant is mostly known for their sushi. I haven't tried a lot of sushi. But, some sushi loving friends of mine who have visited the restaurant said it was amazing. I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good time and great food for good prices who appreciates Asian cuisine. read more

Under the recommendation of our friends, we gave this place a try. Let me start off by saying that I'm a sushi lover, hence why I couldn't eat any of this food. Firstly, the service was mediocre, nothing special. Lunch on a weekday was $13, which is pretty expensive considering the food was not edible. For our first round, we ordered our usual, salmon pizza, shrimp/sweet potato tempura, chicken fried rice, chicken teriyaki, and beef short ribs. I was quite disappointed when I didn't see seaweed salad there (who only has seaweed salad on their dinner menu???) The salmon pizza was tasteless, there was way too much pepper on my chicken fried rice and the short ribs were mediocre. Don't even get me started on the chicken teriyaki. We asked our waitress about it after ordering our second round and when it came out (15 minutes after asking about it), we were disappointed. There was no taste to it and as well, too much pepper. During our meal, the waitress said there was a last call for lunch. What? I have never heard any AYCE sushi say that there is a last call for lunch, unless they close mid-day. The second round, we got: calamari, vegi udon, and spicy general tao chicken. The calamari basically consisted of soggy batter and slime. The udon's broth tasted like fish and the general tao was alright. After explaining that the food wasn't to our liking, they charged us $5 for not finishing our food. Good customer service would've taken off the charge but overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for good sushi. If you're in Durham, make a 15 minute drive to Makimono instead. read more

Been here since it opened. This place has been something I wanna go to if I'm craving some sushi. Knowing this place, I'd say the atmosphere is good for couples, groups, family etc. I've seen all sorts of groups coming to this place and they don't seem disappointed. Food: Delicious! I love the sushi menu, appetizer, dessert, you name it! Services: Ok, maybe if you come in only with your friends and no one is around - I'd say the service is good. Once the peak hours has come and there's a lot of customers...don't get surprised that the service is going to go down on your part. I've been to this place and there are times where i have to wait 30 min for my sushi - and most of the time they'd forget my order and i'd have to write another (all-you-can-eat) Prices/Menu: Cheap cheap cheap. That is all. The reason I can tolerate the late hour services is that this place still gives cheap all-you-can-eat Lunch ($11.99) and regular menu itself is also cheap. Has wide variety of selection from Japanese to Chinese. Overall, I'd still come back to this place (I've been coming back ever since I first came here anyway). We came here for dinner before a movie with some friends; they live close by and have said its a pretty good place for sushi so we took them up and headed here on a Friday at dinnertime. The place wasn't too busy when we arrived and it never quite seemed to fill up, which was odd as its not very big. Out of the four of us, I was the only raw-fish eater in the group, everyone else had cooked dishes, and only one other person was having sushi, so I did my very best to try as much as possible to get a sense of what it was like. I ordered my usual sashimi, salmon, butterfish, and those came quickly and before anyone else's food arrived. The sashimi was good, cold and tasty but not the best I've ever had. I did end up ordering more and it was more of the same tasty sashimi. We ended up getting some Chicken Caraga, which was quite good and Beef Rolls, which were surprisingly good, considering I don't much like beef at all. Very tasty, fairly tender (considering it was beef). We also got various kinds of tempura, including shrimp and onion rings - both of the tempuras left something to be desired. They weren't cooked enough, so the outside wasn't as crispy and light as it should be, and the onion rings were just kind of gross. Given, its onion ring tempura, but they should have been super crispy and they just weren't. I ordered the Spicy Butterfish Rolls from here, which are my favourite, but I wasn't much a fan. I was glad I hadnt ordered more because they were hard to finish. My friend also got another kind of roll that was just plain gross. Overall, the rolls here weren't impressing me and I wouldn't order most of them again. We all split some rice and noodles, which were quite good, although the rice was salty, and some wings, which were terrible. I don't know how you can screw up wings, but they managed - they were overly fatty and just gross to bite into. One of my friends got a very good beef dish, spicy with lots of sauce, and that was good, and the grilled shrimp were delicious, but it wasn't enough to save the meal. Overall, if I want good sushi, I have a few places under my belt that I can get good sushi at and frankly, this would never be one of them. The price was okay but the quality of food was lacking and I wasn't too impressed. I was further disappointed because it was a first time experience for my boyfriend and I don't think he was terribly impressed either. Oh well, I'll have to take him to Makimono next time! read more

My favourite AYCE sushi restaurant in Durham! I've been coming here since it opened and like the variety. This is a great "starter" sushi place if you want to bring non-sushi eaters as there are a lot of other options available. I mostly go for lunch as it's the best value, but I do like some of the extras on the dinner menu (the beef tataki for example is delicious!). Unlike some other AYCE restaurants, they don't often bring you the wrong item or miss anything. The staff aren't the warmest people (not a very smiley bunch), but they get the job done. The prices are low, so don't go in expecting 5 star sushi. If you're just looking for tasty food for a really good price, this is is the place. read more

This is the absolute worst sushi restaurant I've ever been to. We had ordered a sushi set with a hand roll and inside the hand roll we found a short strand of hair in it which was absolutely disgusting and unsanitary. To top it all off, they had the audacity to question us saying the strand of hair was from us when NONE of their kitchen staffs were wearing hair nets. Their staff also had terrible attitudes and could not get our order correct even after we had pointed out the exact item we wanted to the waitress. We were given dirty looks when we asked them to go back and get the proper order to us. This place is a sorry excuse for a sushi restaurant and I would not be surprised if you receive food poisoning from their food as their fish did not look fresh at all and their sushi were served warm on warm dishes. Perfect way to get contaminated sushi. Eat here if you want to receive food poisoning and terrible service. Otherwise, avoid it like the plague. read more

Dinner on a week night was pretty decent at $19 per person. We were stuffed silly. The salmon sashimi was tasty and I enjoyed the cooked dishes. I wasn't the biggest fan of the sushi but for the price and service I enjoyed it and I didn't dislike the food. Went there yesterday and I will never go again, I thought since it was so busy it HAD to be great but the crab is disgusting and after two sushi rolls I felt so sick. The only thing I liked was the seaweed salad, but come on how could you mess that up?! Also brought us items we never ordered !! NEVER AGAIN. My friends and I will be sticking to Kakemono. HORRIBLE. Like many others have noted, customer service needs major improvement. I can't even comment on the quality of the food because we sat and waited for 40 minutes without anyone even acknowledging our presence. It was a busyish night, I admit, but it would have been nice to at least have someone come up and reassure us we are not just being ignored, bring water, idk.. Instead we had servers walk past us during the 40 mins, staring at us in the most disinterested way possible. What a waste of our time, needless to say, we had enough, got up and left after fruitlessly waiting to order for almost an hour (again, with the staff simply staring at us on our way out). Their business hours list that they are open till 10 and they do last call at 9:30 which is understandable, but all the chefs were out smoking at 9:10 when I showed up and they wouldn't let us go in because they didn't want to make food. My wife and I, we love sushi and have hit most places. For the beginning this was the go to place for us. Sometimes it is a miss mind you. Depending on the timing. I used to take my family here when it first opened, but stopped going mainly because the service was so bad. After hearing how busy the place is and that the service had dramatically improved we decided to give it another try tonight. While there are more staff now and they are quicker with the service, they are not at all friendly or courteous. But that's not the worst of it, the food quality has gone from average to outright awful. There's no other way to describe the sushi other than to say it's absolutely the worst I've ever had. The food was ohk but was really pricey...they no longer have all you can eat (lunch) which was cheaper. The place wasnt busy so I got my orders pretty quickly... Our favourite sushi place. We find ourselves craving for their sushi every couple weeks at the very least. I have been a regular over a long time now and have taken many friends to Tokushima. We have enjoyed the food and the friendly service. The nice part is that if your friends don't like raw fish, there are so many other dishes (meat, noodle, grilled, vegetables) that they have been happy to come again. Yea, during lunchtime it gets a bit louder sometimes, because it often is full with college and university students (they know a good thing when they see it )so its wise to make reservation. read more
