It saddens me to write this review because this was one of our favourite sushi spots in Pickering and one that we kept on our regular rotation during Covid to make sure we did our part to help them get through it. Unfortunately, over the past year, we have come here less and less because of "shrinkflation". I understand the price of everything has gone up and I can somewhat stomach that but when I'm paying more and getting less, I struggle to justify it. Sadly though, when we came here last night to get a takeaway, we were really disappointed that the quality of food has also taken a steep decline. The fish was not fresh and the rice had a musty smell and flavour to it. Even the spicy salmon rolls and california rolls left a lot to be desired. Overall, everything just lacked freshness and flavour. Needless to say, I did not enjoy my meal and I will likely be looking for a new sushi spot. The owners are such wonderful people though and they have fed us so well over the years that it just breaks my heart to see this decline. I hope it can get turned around. read more

Such wonderful owners here! We ordered from here on a Tuesday evening and ordered two party tray Bs. Since it was a weekday, it wasn't too busy and our order was ready in about 20-30mins. The owners were so nice and gave us lots of variety and even gave us extra pieces! We really enjoyed the different types of sushi like the seaweed salad rolls, eel rolls, surf clam sashimi, octopus sashimi and sushi. Everything was fresh and tasty. The restaurant probably has around 10-15 tables that can fit 4 people (more if the tables are combined). Prices are great and the customer service is excellent! Owners are super humble and were thankful for us supporting their business. So glad to have found a sushi spot in the area. We'll be back! Thank you Sakada Sushi for the great experience. read more

I've been here twice now, and my experiences were completely different. The first time, Wendy was working and she was absolutely amazing. She was patient, helpful, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcomed. Honestly, she's the reason I decided to come back a second time. Unfortunately, my second visit was very disappointing. There was a man working who was extremely rude and argumentative when we asked simple questions. Even after I clearly said we were dining in, he started removing items from our table before I had even begun eating. It felt rushed and uncomfortable. On top of that, he was on his phone the entire time from when we walked in until we left watching videos instead of paying attention to customers. I do want to mention that the cook did a great job, and the sushi was excellent. The food quality itself was not the issue. However, customer service makes a big difference, and this experience really took away from it. I hope management addresses this because the restaurant has potential, especially with staff like Wendy. read more

I decided to try out this place since I was craving sushi. I got the following: Spicy Salmon Roll (6pc) Dynamite Roll (6pc) Yam Tempura Roll (6pc) All for $13! definitely a great price point. The only drawback is that I was slightly disappointed to see that there wasn't any spicy mayo or spicy sauce included with the Spicy Salmon and that the food didn't have much flavour to it. Was looking for a sushi spot in the Durham area that offered dine in and ended up here thanks to Yelp! It's a fairly small spot but the moment we walked in and started looking at the menu, the prices were too good to be true ($14 all you can eat lunch and first pop free) we had to do a double take. We're not from the area so this was a little weird for us. Nonetheless, I think for the price, this is a great spot to satisfy your sushi cravings. They're also not stingy when it comes to ordering teriyaki dishes, portions are better than many other places I've been to for sushi to be honest. My cousin told me about this place so I figured I'd check it out for dinner. First impressions: this place looks family owned and operated. There were no specific signs saying that, just a feeling. There were lots of neighbourhood kids coming and going while I was there, ordering mostly takeout. They have a fairly big all-you-can-eat sushi menu, lunch specials, dinner specials, bento boxes, and more. Lots of choices! I chose a dinner bento box with teriyaki chicken and beef. It included miso soup, rice, salad, two spring rolls, salmon sashimi, and California rolls, a great value for only $14. These portions were large, larger than most Japanese restaurants I've been to. Everything tasted good. The meats were nicely seasoned and cooked. The California rolls, while not the prettiest, were larger than average and made with fresh ingredients. The sashima was also fresh With good service, good food, and cheap prices, it's easy to see why I saw so many kids coming in. There was one blemish on my visit. They started mopping the dining room floor while several diners were still there. They put out the appropriate warning signs but the smell of the chemicals was a bit strong. Bad timing. It was a turnoff. Come for good tasting cheap food and good service and you won't be disappointed. read more

We have lived here in Pickering for almost 30 years. Sakada is within walking distance from our home. Unfortunately with Covid19 we have not eaten in or ordered out much. Last Monday was my birthday and we had not eaten take out Japanese food for 1.5 years. Only home cooked. I thought we would try Sakada, being local and extremely convenient. If it was good, we could order more often. Unfortunately, although Sakada is inexpensive, the food is very bland tasting. The chicken teriyaki was tasteless. The Tonkatsu was dry and very tough. The Sushi rice on par with Grocery Store quality. Overall very disappointing. I would rather order from somewhere else and drive further away. read more

Hands down the best bang for your buck AYCE. Lunch AYCE is only $14 and dinner AYCE is $22, which is ridiculously cheap in the GTA. The wide selection and quality is worth much more than what it is priced at. Obviously you are not going to get Michelin quality sushi at such a low price - so don't come in expecting that. What you can expect are fresh, homemade dishes made with love from a small family owned and operated restaurant. The service is exceptional, they treat each and every customer with care and compassion. The food came out at a very fast rate even though the place was packed during lunch. I love a good, hard-working mom and pop shop. Would highly recommend this hidden gem to everyone, it is worth the drive from Scarborough or Markham. Update: 10/30/2020 I don't understand how people could give this place a 1 star review. If you didn't like their food then 2 stars is fair but what on earth were your expectations? This restaurant is priced ridiculously low for both their AYCE and a la carte menu. Tiny sushi joint well worth the price! I came here starving at lunch time and opted for their AYCE (only $13pp). While the lunch selection is much smaller than their dinner option, we opted for this as you can get much more than a bento box's worth of food for an even cheaper price. Talk abut a deal!! However, we noticed the majority of their customers ordered takeaway rather than dining in with us for this amazing deal. HIGHLIGHTS: You'll definitely get a bang for your buck with the miso soup. Even though we ordered this item through the ayce menu, I found the portion was HUGE (came in an extra large bowl, about the size of two regular soups) and was not overly salty. I also quite enjoyed the california and rainbow rolls - these rolls came with huge pieces of avocado in them which is quite rare for must ayce places. The raw fish was quite fresh as well. Minus two stars because service was a bit slow (our tea was only refilled once at the end of our meal) and food quality wasn't the best albeit decent (deep fried items like tempura were wayyy too greasy). Overall, I'd definitely come here for takeaway if I'm craving sushi as these prices and quality are a lot better than the grocery store sushi next door, although I likely won't be coming back to dine in. read more

Only reason for four stars is because they didn't check the order before giving it to me and luckily I asked and they had shorted me an order of dynamite rolls, but which was fixed before I left. Quite disappointed with my take out order tonight...I ordered the 28 pic sashimi combo asking for no white tuna and told them they could replace with anything else...somehow, they "forgot" the octopus too. (See photos). The sashimi was decent (being in a plaza in Pickering), but I felt like they totally missed out on the details...need to serve what you state in a menu, unless you sell out, then at which point, advise the customer. When I proposed this spot as a lunch date to my friends, I described it as "suspiciously cheap." Contrary to my fears, this turned out to be a solid option for AYCE sushi in the east end. I especially loved the tempura and the fried scallops, as well as their giant bowls of miso soup. The lunch menu (for the low low price of $13) doesn't offer sashimi, but there are a good variety of rolls and other offerings. You even get your first pop free! This is far from peak quality sushi, but you get more than you pay for, which at most other places would likely just be food poisoning -- and in this case, the value far exceeds the price. The service is good too. The place itself is clean but no-frills; it filled up fast though, for a late Saturday lunch. They also offer lunch specials at crazy prices. Worst sushi ever! I right this review as I'm waiting for my bill it was so bad, I rather go to the mall or to metro next door and get some sushi. Rice had too much vinegar making it very sour, the rolls fell apart, the seaweed was chewy as if they tried sealing the sushi with water? I had their teriyaki it tasted like they used pure soya sauce, so salty and not sweet at all. I'm still have room for more but I couldn't fathom eating another piece from this restaurant. SAKADA! SAKADA! SAKADA! Cheapest sushi place in pickering, but still top notch! My favorite thing to get there is the Crab sushi pizza. A yummy deep fried crispy rice base, with crab and spicy mayo on top...mmmmmmm. Lunch specials are so great because it's like $5 for 12 pieces of sushi. Sakada kills it in all ways! But try to refrain from going around 11-12 because that's when the high school kids swarm like it's the watering hole. The miso soup is really good, addictive teriyaki chicken and rice, and a nice selection of tempura for a great price. I prefer this as a takeout place as it is large inside but a bit dated on the decor so not really a date night choice for me. Unfortunately, there is no delivery option. I was very excited to find this place so close to home, even though it took me a while to finally visit... It has great value and an extensive menu! I was a big fan of the chicken katsu (chicken cutlet with katsu sauce) and enjoyed sampling the sushi my wife ordered. I would definitely recommend for takeout or dine-in (wifey got confused and we forgot to tip... will make up for it next time). My only suggestion is that the chicken cutlet be cut into larger pieces. That's mostly a recommendation of nostalgia though, my favorite plate lunch place in Hawaii (BBQ Kai) cuts their chicken katsu into larger pieces. Otherwise... Amazing! read more

The salmon sashimi was nice and buttery :) ...And I ordered take-out for four people, and it came out to $39 because of a cash discount. $39?! Who the heck can argue with that?! - My Dad is a fan of the BBQ shrimp on skewers. So am I. Nom nom... Definitely a go-to for my fam for Japanese in Pickering. I actually didn't know this place existed until I had a pamphlet delivered to my house. The dinner bento boxes are what really caught my eye. $12.99 is a great price and on top of that, the variety and combinations available for the bento boxes made me pick up the phone to order. With a lot of other sushi places you're limited to one main meat choice (example: salmon OR chicken OR beef) but Sakada offers options like chicken teriyaki AND salmon in one box that falls under the $12.99 price. The boxes at Sakada also came with a miso soup, green salad, 3 pieces of salmon sashimi, 6 pieces of california roll (cucumber, avocado, crab meat, fish eggs), and 2 spring rolls - just an absolute mountain of food. I've noticed that other restaurants will provide one of either sashimi or a roll and when a roll is offered, it's usually just a cucumber roll or plain salmon roll. The fact that both sashimi and a maki roll were offered was awesome. There was also no "filler" item like fruit which I thought was great. I ordered for take-out and was quoted an estimated time of 15 minutes for 2 orders of bento boxes. My food was immediately ready for pickup when I arrived and the staff were friendly. When I started unpacking my food, I could see the care taken to prepare my take out order. For fried items, steam holes were cut into the boxes and a layer of oil absorbing paper was laid underneath. The food was also looked appealing - it looked fresh and was laid out nicely - it reminded me of what it might look like if I dined in. This might not be important to a lot of people but it's nice to see that a restaurant didn't haphazardly throw together my food because I'm a take out customer and thus the wait staff don't need to work for that tip. In terms of the taste, everything from the salad to the fish was fresh and tasted great. The teriyaki sauce was flavourful and the dipping sauce for the chicken cutlet was awesome too. I came here again last night for dinner and ended up trying a bunch of different stuff off the menu. This time I ordered the salad, an order of spicy salmon rolls, avocado rolls and the house sakada roll. I called my order over and they told me 15 minutes; so about 15 minutes later I walked in and my order wasn't ready. They weren't even busy, there were two tables eating in and another person waiting for takeout. They did provide me with some magazines to flip through but if they intend to increase their business, they should get used to traffic. The salad was great, just like the last time, and they had packaged the dressing separately as to not make the salad mushy. The spicy salmon rolls were okay. They weren't really spicy enough, some pieces had good spice and most of them had none at all. I'm not sure what was going on there, but the rolls weren't really wrapped tightly enough and the temperature was weird. I think they were using freshly made rice because they were a little too room temperature. The avocado rolls were good, nice size but same thing with not being wrapped that well. The sakada roll... was different. This was NOT what I was expecting but I tried it anyways. Far too much cucumber on the outside; this is the kind of thing you would order if you had a table of 5 people so that each person only had one. I found that the cucumber overpowered everything else and the spicy mayo that came with it didn't make much sense. I'd avoid ordering this again. Overall, this was an okay but kind of mediocre experience for my second time around. I probably wouldn't bring my friends here but it will stay in my takeout rotation because I love sushi and its so very close to home. I'll keep trying different things off the menu so don't be surprised to see another update or two depending on what I get. read more

Busy takeout...not sure why food.... I found the food was bland and disgusting, I ordered shrimp udon and the shrimp was freezer burnt over cooked so it was extremely hard so the fried calamari. Had lots mix ups ordered two things twice and didn't even get it. The salmon had hard fat in it.. The menu is very small.... on top everything they added 10 % Tip to my bill then charge tax on the tip and food. What a scam. This is the third consecutive day of grabbing sushi from this spot. They have a $5 lunch deal, 2 rolls (12 total); such a great deal! And the sushi is really fresh. I will say, it's not the best sushi I've ever had, but it is really good and well worth the price. They have great bento boxes for both lunch and dinner. Their spring rolls are the bomb. My fiancé loves their chicken, beef and salmon teriyaki, whereas I'm not a fan. The salmon is quite thin, their beef is chewy and their chicken has an off taste to me, but he swears by it so, I guess you can make your own call on it. Great student specials, and you don't even have to be a student to get them, or maybe you do and they just think I'm a student, not sure. read more

Decided to eat here after seeing the good reviews on Yelp while on the hunt for a quick sushi fix. I arrived to a very outdated interior although clean. We decided to order all you can eat. For the first order I ordered the spicy Salmon, Green Dragon roll, spring roll, grilled salmon belly, house salad, teriyaki chicken. We were treated to very sloppy put together sushi, the spicy Salmon roll was actually not good at all which is surprising as even at the worse sushi restaurants I've been too, the spicy Salmon roll has always been somewhat edible, the salmon belly wasn't grilled as mentioned on the menu, it was deep fried and then pooled and covered with grease, the green Dragon roll was missing the sauce and the avacado wasn't ripe and tasted sour. The spring rolls were good but expected for deep-fried frozen food and the teriyaki chicken was sub par, even the dressing on the salad was very little and lacked flavor. You can tell that the chef has lost all passion for his work at this point. We decided to leave and asked if we could pay for what we ordered, she then tried to charge us full price, I then asked if we could pay for what we ordered. The total came out to $44.87! On top of this, she went back behind the counter and decided to start bad mouthing us and staring at us as if we couldn't hear what they were saying, my wife started to feel very uncomfortable and we left. Food was better than expected, quick and hot. But the service was not that good. All of the staff stood by the front talking and laughing, hardly bothering with the customers. Granted, it was only my friend and I dining at one table and another group of friends at another. Also, we weren't offered a drink. We had to get up and ask ourselves. My wife and I went for the "All You Can Eat" lunch for $11.99 per person on July 3, 2013 around 1:20pm. The restaurant wasn't very busy. All You Can Eat is advertised from 11:00am-3:00pm. The waitress seemed nice at first. Our food was hot and better than expected. I asked for ice, extra lemon and had to ask her to replenish the ginger and wasabi, I mean no disrespect, this has been the case at the other Japanese Restaurants we've dined. We finish our first serving and expected she would return, she didn't. This was about 40 minutes later. She checked on other tables, took walk-in/take-out orders. It seemed she purposely found other things to do not to return to our table. I went to the washroom. As I passed by the front, I said to her, we would like to make our second order please. She came with the bill. I told her that we weren't ready for the bill, we wanted to make our second order. This was around 2:15pm. She told us the hours for "Alll You Can Eat" has ended. I was of course surprised, then referred to the their All You Can Eat lunch menu and showed her the time that states 11:00am-3:00pm. She went and talked to who I believe is the manager. We figured, this was an honest miscalculation of time on the waitress's part. He came over and said the same as the waitress and added that the waitress has been back and forth 20 times getting things for us. I relaxed, smiled and said, I think 20 times is an exaggeration, and said, she came to our table three times, which was when I asked for extra lemon and that was requested during our initial order, I requested that our ginger and wasabi be replenished and ice because my water got warm due to her not returning to take our second order. He told me that their prices are some of the lowest in Pickering. She has been back and forth, back and forth. I was unsure where he was going with that, but said, If you are referring to gratuity, I have no problem paying gratuity when I receive good service. I brought to his attention their lunch menu and the time, which was around 2:30pm, which contradicted his claim that the All You Can Eat had expired. He then said, well pay what you want. I decided to entertain that and said, okay then, how about I pay $20. He said, if you pay $20, I'll called the police. I chuckled and thought, if my wife wasn't with me, I'd tell him, call the police. I told him, this is not about the money, it is the principle. You advertise the All You Can Eat lunch from 11:00am-3:00pm and you should honor that. I paid him the $26, he brought back my change and repeated that the waitress was going back and forth, and their low prices. My wife said to them, we were sitting here waiting for the waitress to return but she didn't. I thought to myself, my wife and I have more class than this, I'm done. I said to my wife, honey, let's go, while he was still talking. I said to my wife, how's that for adventure. We had a good laugh afterwards. That was the worst customer service I've ever seen.
