One of the few sushi places on bloor street west in Etobicoke. I got the order super quick and the staff was very nice. The taste was just ok, have had better dynamite rolls. The tempura shrimp inside was crispy and rice to filling ratio was decent. I really enjoyed the salad and California roll they threw in for free. But there's better dynamite rolls out there. I'll start by saying their selection of sushi is very good, and the staff are super friendly and helpful. They recommended specific fish for the day based on freshness and quality, and it did not disappoint. The "Maguro" (Tuna) was the best I have had in a very long time, and the guest I had with me who had lived in Japan for many years agreed. Their chefs know what they are doing, and are masters of their craft. The wasabi was also very fresh and delicious. True wasabi, a breath of fresh air compared to what most restaurants are using these days. The food I had gets a 5/5. Truly delicious and I would recommend it to anyone. However - here's where the one star gets knocked off. Their atmosphere looks dated, chairs and tables are old and need help. I have been to this restaurant many years ago, in the 1990's, and It still has the same decor. It's neat if you like history, as it's a time machine, but some things really should be updated. For those who like history, this is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Etobicoke, and used to be "the spot" to go. You needed reservations to get in back in the 1990's-2000's. Cups and plates had some miles on them, and the specific tea cup I had imparted an odd stale taste to my tea. Slightly off-putting. If the restaurant is reading this, you have a phenomenally talented group of chefs, who clearly love what they do. Do not lose them. Your staff are friendly and helpful. I truly appreciate this kind of service. But please - if you have the financial means to do so, update the decor, cutlery, flooring and seating arrangements. A complete renovation is in order. You also need to have better lighting installed, the dark dungeon lighting is dated. If you are able to achieve this, you will have one of the best sushi restaurants in the GTA. Thank you! read more

Excellent fresh sushi, sashimi and friendly service. Decent prices and it's not noisy! My sashimi boat was ample and fresh with a large assortment of sashimi, not just 4 different items. Also had a hand roll which was excellent. The salad that came with the sashimi was a large bowl, not the tiny bowl of salad like at most places and the miso soup was quite different although lacking the seaweed usually found in them. read more

Been coming here over 10yrs, always consistent and great service. Probably hasn't had a good deep clean in decades, just they're just too busy making great, affordable sushi, but IMO, the patina shows how well-loved this place is. Our host sort of tallied the bill and punched everything into the machine before we could add the tip which was a little confusing at first - did he add his own? I said what about tip? He said - no tip, we weren't very good tonight. Seriously, everything was great! Service was a little slow only cuz they were slammed and he was running the floor and takeout by himself. We were here for my coworker's birthday. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced and come in a larger than usual bento tray. The miso soup was okay, not too salty and had the little mushrooms in it. The tempura was fresh and crispy. The bulgogi was hearty and plentiful. I was not the biggest fan of the iceberg lettuce salad. It was filling lunch. A decent amount of food for $10.95 ($12.37 with tax). The owner Charlie was very rushed as the restaurant was busy, so we didn't get much service. But I'd re-visit this place! read more

Just went back again, and it was wonderful. You really get some quality rolls and the little starter salads are nice a crisp. I love the dragon rolls especially, but their spider rolls are also quite good. We got in just before the dinner rush and our server switched on this little neon palm tree and we thought it was pretty funny it was as if to say, 'let me set the mood with the nifty blue tree' - lighting aside it nice and cosy restaurant. Service is always great. They're just not bothered by looking cool or appearing a certain way, the food speaks for itself. So go, enjoy the free tempura yams and all the amazing rolls and plus the tasty little orange slices, for they give you for dessert. read more

We love this restaurant. Great teriyaki chicken, great tempura vegetables. Our son loves the Bento box. The service is great and if anything is ever missing from our order, the owner delivers it in no time. They leave sweet notes on the order and always include free items. Our fave restaurant in Etobicoke. They've made pandemic life much more tolerable. read more

Gojima used to be such a good restaurant. It was a go to for me and my friends in the 2010's. I recently moved back to the area and was excited to visit them once again. Such a disappointment on my first visit. I decided to give them another shot in case they were just having an off day. Big mistake on my part. The tempura specifically was heavy and oily and they don't seem to know their portion sizes. The tempura dinner is approximately $23 for 6 pieces of shrimp and assorted vegetables. I received 3 pieces of shrimp (small shrimp) and 3 vegetables (for $23). I ordered the same thing again on my second visit and this time I received 4 shrimp and 5 vegetables. It was still wrong. The menu clearly states 6 shrimp with the order! Also the tempura sauce is sickeningly sweet. I'm a big fan of tempura, but this restaurant's offering is so bad, I would willingly forgo eating tempura again for the rest of my life if it meant I had to eat it from Gojima. Screwing up both orders sadly isn't only inherent to Gojima. I'm finding that everywhere I order from these days is messing up at my expense. It has become so frustrating, I'm considering stopping eating out or ordering out for the foreseeable future. Believe me, that's a huge decision for me. I eat or order out about 4 times a week. Everywhere you turn the media is encouraging us to support our local restaurants and leave our servers big tips. I am more than willing to do so, but not for the food and service I've been receiving over the last year. Take heed restaurateurs, I'm not the only customer who feels this way!! read more

There aren't that many good reasonably priced sushi restaurants in Etobicoke, so Gojima stands out. The food is at a reasonable price point for the quality and the lack of competition in the area (~$16-20 for a dinner set, $10-12 for the premium rolls, $4-8 for the 'regular' ones). Miso soup was a bit bland, but our rolls were all fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. Complimentary yam tempura didn't hurt either! Clearly a lot of care and thought goes into this restaurant, from the decor to the food. The owners are very friendly and clearly have a rapport with their regulars--a lot of couples were sitting at the sushi bar and chatting with the chefs during their meal. read more

Everything was okay up until I found a piece of rubber band nestled underneath the salmon teriyaki. When I pointed it out to the owner, he apologized profusely and offered me two tangerines and had me pay $10 instead of $13. Very mixed reviews on here about this place. I was brought by a friend and really enjoyed it. We had the tempura to share and it was delicious. A couple of very big prawns and then some fried veggies. I love love love tempura and was not disappointed. I had the spider roll. It was very tasty. A little less meat than other places but plenty of fresh vegetables in the roll. My friend had a salmon Maki roll and was very happy. We got a complimentary pitcher of cold green tea and a complimentary salad with some sort of fishy dressing. It was salty and moreish. The server then brought us a complimentary salmon roll. 8 pieces of spicy fresh salmon with a crunchy shredded topping. They were so nice! All for 43 dollars including tip. We rolled out the door we were so stuffed. When we paid the bill we each got a free sweetie. You couldn't make it up! Unreal. We sent at 5 pm and it was very quiet but my friend is a frequent flyer and said it's very very busy at lunch time. The lunch deals looked like great value. I couldn't say a bad word about this meal. Staff did not harass or annoy use and we're quietly attentive. Recommend this place. Highly. read more

I just got back to civilisation and I looked rough, six months no haircut and no shave. Long scraggly grey hair and a bushy beard. My pants were ragged and my shoes were well ventilated. I was giving off a bit of a wild bouquet. I sat down at the bar and Charlie the owner came up to me. At first, I thought he was going to ask me to leave. No street people here, I thought he'd say. He just looked at my clothes disdainfully, he lingered his eyes on my holy shoes and then looked at how close I was sitting near the door. He must've figured me for a dinner and a dasher. He sighed wearily, "What can I get you?" I gave him a long list. What size saki would you like, he asked? "The large one, of course". I smiled. Charlie went off to the kitchen to prepare my food. When he came back, his demeanor had changed. He brought me a bottle of some new beer/saki concoction. He started bringing me dishes I didn't even order. Old Charlie just kept piling the food and drink in front of me. I just ate and ate and drank and drank. It took me a while to realize what was going on. Charlie, the proprietor, who makes the best Japanese food in Etobicoke, is a real Christian. He figured I didn't have the money for what I was ordering but he decided to fill my belly anyways. Been here a few times as my office is nearby. Took my team there for a team lunch. I have had better experiences there before my most recent experience was disappointing. I ordered an expensive 'Love' boat filled with rolls and sashimi. The rolls were ok, as expected. The sashimi was disappointing in terms of portion as it was paper thin. It is as if they split one regular piece into four pieces. Ended up still hungry afterwards. read more

Such a peaceful atmosphere at Gojima. It's a family-run, high calibre japanese restaurant. The fish is always VERY fresh. The service is impeccable. I agree with the other reviewer who said that it's reasonably priced, as well. I can feel the stresses of the day melt off of me when I sit down at Gojima, and it's very obvious that they mean to have you feel that way. Ask for the white tuna sashimi! read more

This place has good quality sushi at an acceptable price. The lunch boat for two ($30) is one of my favorites. The service is extremely friendly yet unfortunately often amateur. Over the past couple years they have had a few servers that barely understood English. They will very often screw up an order. I suggest sitting at the sushi bar to take out the middle man - the sushi chef is very experienced and never screws up. If you can't sit at the sushi bar make sure you point to items on the menu as you order them or there is a very good chance you will not get what you wanted. This place would have scored much higher if service errors were not so common. read more
