Last night my wife and I arrived for a 6PM reservation on a Friday night. The small but funky restaurant was full but our table was ready for us. Despite every table being full the two servers in our area made us feel like we were alone in the room. They kept the tea hot and Sake full. We had three Maki rolls, two from the daily specials. The lobster roll was excellent and the others very good. With Misu soup a salad and lots of sake dinner with tax and tip was less than $140 for 2. We left with a smile and a promise to return. read more

The black cod sushi ($10 for 2 pieces) is an interesting take on the fish, the nigiri torched tableside so the fish's fat begins to melt forming slight layers in the cod. Being a denser fish, it does need a fair amount of flavour and while the sweet soy was a start, it needed something else for interest. After the experience, I'm still on the fence of whether a nigiri is the best use of this prized fish. My preference is still for the baked miso marinated black cod ($15) where the fish is hot and flaky and infused with a slightly sweet umami flavour. The palm-sized portion is just enough for sharing amongst two people. Sushi Bar's other a-la-carte nigiri is just as good with large pieces of barbeque eel on the unagi and a thick slice of ruby red tuna on the maguro (both $7 for 2 pieces). Displaying the lobster on top of the lobster roll ($18) was a great idea as it becomes the first thing you taste, and diners can see the full tail in its glory. However, it was already overcooked and blowtorching it at the table made it even more dry and chewy. Ideally, they should undercook it to begin, and the torching will help heat and finish off the doneness at the table. It's a dish with promise and the thin cucumber lantern a great idea for a beautiful garnish. Starting every meal is a bowl of rice crackers that arrives with drinks, a pre-pandemic tradition that I'm glad has been kept, providing something to snack on as we peruse the menu. A new addition is an amuse bouche of seafood, squid, and seaweed salads, enough for a bite each to enjoy while the rest of the meal arrives. As the temperature drops, the complimentary starter is sometimes a rich hot bowl of miso soup with cubes of tofu and seaweed flakes. A welcomed respite after a cool walk to the restaurant. With a variety of maki available, the black dragon ($17) was an interesting take on the fancier dynamite roll. In this case, sweet-glazed barbeque eel, tempura bits, fish roe, and green onion wrapped around the shrimp tempura. It's a colourful creation offering a variety of textures and flavours and it's ideal that the pieces aren't overly large so that they are enjoyed in one bite. The red dragon ($17) is just as good, substituting the barbeque eel for salmon instead. If you're in the mood for shrimp tempura ($8 for 3 pieces), I'd recommend having it in maki-form as the fried shrimp by itself is underwhelming, the batter too thick and the temperature tepid at best. Upsold to the tuna tartare roll ($10), we should have stuck with the tried-and-true spicy tuna ($8). In the tartare, the tuna too pulverized and the filling including dreaded tempura bits that causes the roll to become gummy. It also needs more heat to be considered spicy tuna. Despite their name, Sushi Bar also makes a variety of non-sushi dishes. You get a hefty portion of hamachi kama ($19) with the full portion, a meaty cut of the fish's jaw. A thicker cut, there were parts of the fish that could have been done a touch less but being a bone-in piece, it can be hard to gauge. Nevertheless, the skin was crispy and the fish hot and delicious. Served with a radish ponzu soy sauce, a bit more salt sprinkled onto the fish would help it pop. read more

A hidden gem sushi joint with superb sushi at an affordable price. The staff is friendly, helpful, and generous. I was not expecting such great sushi for a spot that we randomly stumbled across. My family and I decided to have dinner here after another sushi place down the road was takeout only. Some of our favorite dishes were the sashimi yuki, hamachi kama, lobster roll, and sashimi dinner. All of the sushi looked aesthetically pleasing and tasted very fresh/wonderful. The inside is not very large so it wouldn't be great for a large party but definitely can fit a table of 6. They also have a full bar with beers, saki, and some high end whiskeys. How can my favourite Japanese place be out of business.. Then I happily realized they moved to a new location, just 3 doors down... And of course I need to come here for a visit! This review might be a little bias as I never even ever look at the menu whenever I eat at The Sushi Bar. Just show up and sit at the sushi counter and just eat whatever served to me. And now I can even drink my sake here?! I just love this new location, so spacious and nicely decorated. There are quite a few sakes offers here and some even not on the menu. Chef looked at me looking at the Sake menu, he said Hot or Cold? I said Cold and the pretty waitress just shown up mysteriously with 3 sakes for me to try... Just like magic! Came here for a sushi making class during lunch hours. It was a very fun experience and the teacher/chef did his best to explain the process to us. Interestingly, they closed the whole restaurant for the sushi making class, which makes one wonder if they have lost potential profit. We were taught how to make California roll, hand roll and regular seaweed roll. Everything is laid out on the table for us to make sushi when we arrive. I felt that the table was a bit small but it could be that we were not experienced in managing a small space efficiently. The ingredients were fresh and we can request more if we want. Everything we make we can take them home. The chef kept asking us if we want some other ingredients but since we were such amateur I can't really think of what ingredients can go into a sushi. Perhaps next time. The chef was proud of his own way of cooking the sushi rice. He was happy to share how he only use this particular cultiva of rice and the ratio of vinegar to rice. He is the only one who cooks the rice in the restaurant, no one else. Overall a great experience. read more

I really like good quality sushi, so I've been trying to scout out all the good sushi places around my neighbourhood! We ordered the sakura sushi platter (35pc) and several stand alone dishes. The quality of fish on the platter varied: Salmon: above average Tuna: not good, did not taste fresh Butter fish: good White tuna: average Shrimp: good The cali, spicy salmon, and rainbow rolls were good. Though these rolls are not traditionally japanese, I still enjoy them greatly! We also got an unagi onigiri and unagi (eel) sushi a la carte. The unagi was good. A bit salty, but the texture of the meat was better than I expected. The sushi pizza was a last minute addition made on impulse. I thought it would be similar to the sushi pizzas (not so great) at ayce sushi joints. However, the sushi pizza here surprised me. The crunchy rice used to make the "pizza" was a nice complement to the spicy mayo fish roe "toppings". The decor and service were good. The servers were attentive and came around often to fill our glasses and ask if we were doing okay. In light of the other facors, I will give them the benefit of the doubt on some of their fish qualities. Hopefully they will have better tuna when I visit again! read more

They moved their location about 3 doors down but it still doesn't change my rating. This is the only place I come to for sushi. I hated just looking at a sushi roll and gagging but it all changed when I tried their salmon teriyaki rolls. AMAZING taste. I also love their vegetable fried udon and tempura dragon rolls. Prices are reasonable and the staff are very friendly and polite. Sometimes they do some special orders not on the menu for regulars. Will definately keep coming back! read more

Not a very good experience here with the food, although service was excellent. I tried tobiko yuzu sushi, grilled black cod, cold soba, and onigiri. The yuzu taste was a bit overpowering, but interesting and different. The grilled black cod was tasty, but had two small bones in it, which can happen, but really shouldn't. The soba was a mess, a bunch of soggy noodles in a bowl with the sauce already added, and very mushy tofu cubes. Finally, the onigiri was a do-it-yourself effort, as I was presented with a rice triangle on top of a sheet of nori with some spicy tuna on top. Very trendy spot for sushi! I was very impressed with my Chirashi Don that came with 9 thick slices of sashimi with some tamago and 2 small pieces of unagi! The rice was flavourful and had sesame sprinkled all over it. While I wish I had more sashimi, for $18, it was a good value - especially since the service was good and the ambience was nice too. My sister ordered the unagi don and her fiancé had a bento box which came with a giant green salad and a small bowl of miso soup. **No photos because the restaurant is dimly lit ** Overall, the food, service and environment is worth coming back. You also get to take home 1 Japanese candy bar!!! On a Friday night, we didn't have to wait long. Sushi Bar is hands down my favourite sushi place right now. If you follow my profile you'll know I eat and review Japanese food a lot. This is the place I compare them all to. The sushi is well portioned and reasonably priced for the quality you get. The staff are the absolute best. Incredibly courteous and friendly and they remember me every time even though I don't come here that often (once a month?). They give me complimentary appetizers and have comped my ice cream. I make sure to tip them as well as I can. Dr. Sushi knows his stuff and I don't even scrape out the wasabi under the fish at this place since he portions it just right to complement the taste of the fish. We ordered an omakase with customized fish. The fish was very fresh and the portion of the dishes were quite large and very generous. Service was quick and attentive. The vibe of the restaurant was very relaxing but lively. the two favourite dishes we had were the monk fish liver and the sea bass. Both were very unique plates and had great pairings. The scallops with roe on top was my favorite piece on the sashimi platter. However, I wish the salmon and the tuna sashimi were cut into three pieces instead of being served as one large one. The lobster was delicious but I did not enjoy having the large amount of wasabi in it. Typically cooked fish should not have wasabi on it so this was quite unconventional. Each pieces of the nigiri had lot of wasabi in it and I wish it was more toned down. I enjoyed the waitress torching the nigiri pieces in front of us though ! Overall, I would want to come back and try other things on the menu but not necessarily have the omakase again. The food was still very delicious and enjoyable. read more

Oh No! We will never come back to this place! Their food was extremely bad! My friend and I orderd Tendon from regular menu. The Tendon sucked! Only 3 small shrimps and Tenkasu(crunchy deep-fried tempura dough) were on small amount of rice. No miso soup came together. Wait! Tenkasu on rice? No way! Real Tendon comes with big shrimp tempura( of course) and some vegetable tempuras on rice! Also, the shrimp tempura was obviously from frozen! It was totally different food from real "Tendon"! The taste was awful! I was so surprised when I found many yelp user rated this place 5 stars. This place does not deserve even 2 stars! I saw a lady working at sushi counter dealing with sushi with long pink manicured nail! It is unbelievable! a head chef or restaurant owner allow anyone who handles food to have long nail? No way! I obviously didn't enjoy this place as much as everyone else. I think three stars may even be a stretch - just another average Japanese restaurant in my opinion. I had a Sushi combo special for 24.99. The salad and Miso soup starters were standard. The Chicken skewers (3) were just terrible - all fat and grizzle, yuck. The best way to describe the sushi is "OK". I was not a big fan of the sushi rice, way to much rice vinegar. The fish was fresh but the final result falls well short of Toronto's best. My combo at $24.99 was not worth it at all. I must admit the service was definitely above average. Our server was fast, efficient and very polite. I also liked the Japanese style decor, very comfortable and the restaurant is large enough that it doesn't feel overly crowded. This is really a overwhelming restaurant. The price is a little bit pricey regarding to the food. I ordered the seafood rice. Seafood is overcooked, and it does not match with the rice. It is like two separate dish, stir fry seafood and rice. Also, they charge extra 1 dollar with brown rice. The waitress did not see we don't have napkin on our table. Not worth to come if driving that far.... Not even a place to have a quick lunch... This is hands-down one of the best sushi/maki places in the city. And I will tell you why. I love the taste and texture of the rice, the perfect degree of tightness of the rolls, the freshness of the seafood and the amazing service. The atmosphere is also quite lovely--Dr. Jimmy, sushi master, built most of the furniture himself and puts a lot of care into his craft. Some sushi places make their rice overly sweet, vinegary, or compact, which is not the case with Sushi Bar. It is subtly vinegary, extremely fluffy and has the perfect texture as it enters your mouth. I used to come here once a week for 2 years (this was 3 years ago) and I just went back two days ago and the excellent taste and service is still the same. I have NEVER had a single roll or piece of sushi here after which I thought, "this might be just a little fishy" which happens often with other sushi places, but not at Sushi bar. My favourites happen to be the banzai roll and bc roll, which is butterfish and white tuna. The mix of ingredients is just heavenly and the avocado is perfectly ripe. I also enjoy the tuna tartare. Jimi is one of Toronto's best kept secrets. For years he's been known as Dr. Sushi. His spot is a fun sushi bar that's casual with lots of Japanese curiousities around to look at. Jimi's sushi is incredibly fresh. The popular rolls and sushi are there on the menu but go to the more traditional menu for something different Takoyaki Balls are a favourite as is the ochuzuke. Jimi's wife Jue is lovely. Order a yuzu liquor and chill. It's always a good night here. read more

Came here for a sushi making class for my sister's bachelorette. Although communication to book/confirm the class was a bit slow, the actual class experience made up for it. Despite the fact there was only 6 of us, they shut down the entire restaurant just for our class. The class was very well organized, casual and fun. Jimi was super informative, patient and funny. They made sure we had plenty of ingredients and plenty to eat. There was lots of leftovers to take home. They took pictures for us and even gave the bride some sake tasting samples. Great place to learn how to make sushi and also just for dining. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for an interesting and unique experience. read more

I ordered the vegetable udon meal - are with a bowl of salad and spicy tuna maki (6 small pieces). I also shared a plate of spicy salmon pizza with my friend. Price - $18 tip and tax in. Pizza was tasty but a little expensive. Salad and maki were generic in flavour and appearance. Udon was less than desirable and contained very little vegetables. Sushi was fresh. The pieces were big. The food was really good. Salmon tartare was tasty with the tempura bits. Nice presentation. Torch the salmon sushi it was perfect. It gives it a different taste to the salmon. Really nice place with a relaxing atmosphere. Prices are not expensive for what you are getting. Waitress was welcoming. Chirashi was good but I had better before. You do get a lot of pieces. Salmon dragon roll was really good too and there was 8 pieces to the roll. Even got complimentary ice cream.
