Overall a good experience. The tempura is crispier and heavier than I'd like but the little details in the plating, ambiance, and service was great. What a neighborhood gem! Small little Japanese restaurant tucked away on a plaza off York mills. Love the interior with partitioned tables and rooms. Very cozy setting for quiet dinner with a few friends or large gatherings. The sushi quality is amazing. There are. Was looking for a place to get a sushi platter this evening and stumbled upon Hamaru! We ordered a medium sashimi, sushi, and maki boat party tray (30 pcs sashimi and 30 pcs assorted nigiri sushi and maki). We were able to easily order on the phone and had a smooth pick up. Cash discount too! The tray had a nice assortment of sashimi and nigiri pieces. There was a tempura shrimp roll and california roll. I ordered a yam tempura roll on the side and the tempura stayed crispy until we ate (30 min later). One thing to note is the nigiri pieces have a dab of wasabi on the rice already (authentic!). I heard great things about the service here and my ears didn't lie. This is a Korean owned Sushi restaurant and the ajummas here are SUPER kind, sweet and attentive. They'll have you smiling as you enter. We ordered a sushi boat for 3 people. The fish was sliced well and the rice ratio was perfect. The rice itself was flavourful, sweet and vinegary. Very little soy is necessary. The fish was slightly under room temperature, wasn't sinewy at all, and was tender. I'd come back here again if I were in the area and craving sushi. Proper booth seating with a nice interior. There's plenty of choices available on their menu and the portions are quite generous for the price. I ordered the beef bulgogi bento dinner for lunch and it was enough to keep me full all day long. Everything in the Bento had amazing flavour and was very well cooked. Came here for a family dinner on a Tuesday for 5:30pm, it wasn't busy at all, even when we were leaving, but we were able to get a nice big table as we had made reservations in advance. Be careful when coming here because the parking lot is really small and it's a bit difficult to get into since there is a lot of traffic and has only one entrance. There is some parking beside the building though. We got the sashimi and sushi boat which was $105.95 and served around 8 people. The food was okay, it wasn't high quality or anything, but it did satisfy that craving for sushi. It was pretty standard for the GTA. We headed to Hamaru Sushi at 4 p.m. for a really early dinner. The online ratings for this small Japanese restaurant at a strip plaza next to a CIBC were very high and thus worth checking out to fix a sushi craving. Not surprising as it was so early for dinner service (and late for lunch service), we were one of the only ones here when we walked in. We decided to order the small boat set which included 21 pieces of sashimi, 20 pieces of sushi, and 8 pieces of maki to share. I love ordering sushi boats because there's so much variety and the presentation is always pretty! First, we were served a small complimentary bowl of soup noodles (I believe it's called "SoMyun Soup"). I always enjoy these "noodle crunch soup" where the noodles are thin, the soup is umami, and there's little pieces of floating tempura bits which are soggy yet crunchy. There are many other restaurants that also serve this exact noodle soup appetizer complementarily before the meal. Not long after ordering, our small Sashimi Sushi and Maki Boat arrived! It was beautiful! There were various pieces of sashimi, sushi, and the maki roll was a Dynamite Roll. Yummy! The cuts of salmon sashimi were nice and thick -- exactly the way I like them. It's best to eat all the items sooner rather than later because the longer they sit in the boat and warm up to room temperature, the items don't taste half as good as when they're freshly brought out. The wasabi here wasn't too spicy and melted too easily into the soy sauce. We were stuffed by the end but we ended up finishing the entire boat of fish and rice (49 items in total!). At the end, we were given complimentary ice cream as well! There was a choice between vanilla or green tea ice cream. I chose the former while my friend chose the latter. This was a really great and solid Japanese restaurant for sushi and sashimi! The decor of Hamaru Sushi was also nice. It reminded me immediately of Osaka Sushi Japanese Restaurant in Markham where they also have tables in the middle of the restaurant with private rooms on both sides of the restaurant. read more

Cons: - I took 1 star off because what I ordered wasn't consistent with the menu description, it should include 6 of the California roll but instead I got a single hand roll. I'm not sure if the in store menu has changed but this was based off the online menu. - my friends ordered a Chicken Donburi, which was a cheaper item that had more vegetables but got a more expensive Chicken Katsu instead. This is my go to sushi place because it's closest to my house. They do offer take out, and if you pay in cash you get a 10% off your order. They have a wide selection on the menu. I love typically love either the chirashi or the haedupbup. Both are a mixture of chopped up sushi, except that the former is on a bed of rice while the latter is on salad and comes with a very spicy Korean sauce. The rice is always done nicely here, and the fish seems like pretty good quality for the price, so I would definitely recommend! read more

Lunch Special till 3 pm but sadly I just missed that by 5 minute or so. (They should have put that in their menu as of when it is offered) I ended up ordering a dinner combo of Sushi and Tempura ($19). The sushi was well made and shari rice was balanced. Sadly the shrimp tempura has this really thick and soggy batter that would have made this a 4 star experience. It is though a good value for the price. This not an Ayce, and not a high end sushi place. Don't expect cheap cheap sushi. This is well priced sushi for what you get. Got the small boat sashimi, sushi, and maki. The slices of fish is very generous. Pictures do not lie. The nigiri rice and fish combination is well balanced, where the rice is not too cold and hot which holds well. The roll wasn't out of the world or enormous but was exactly what the boat needed to compliment the meal. Also threw in some chutoro x3, which pretty much tasted like a otoro! Also got some BC uni on the side and I have to say it's better than getting it at taro's sushi. So fresh as if it was freshly scooped out. Don't know if we got lucky or not on this one. First time coming here because of a recommendation. I gotta say.. I was pretty disappointed. The menu lacked non-sushi items and everything was pretty expensive. After we ordered our meal sets (combos), the miso soups and garden salads came out quick. But then the rest took 30-40 min after that. Then when the food finally came, they forgot one person's entire order. But they didn't admit it, we saw them pointing at our table to the chefs from a distance. So another 15 min. Over an hour since we sat down. No apologies given. Then a friend joined later and got some sake. Their bill came up to $7 but wouldn't let him pay by credit card because the minimum is $10. I'm pretty sure this breaks credit card merchant contract. Also it's bad for return customers imo. read more

Then they brought out Grilled Salmon Cheek for us. Super nice of them. The Salmon Cheek cooked perfectly, it is fresh and tastes delicious! My wife loved it! Spicy Salmon Hand Roll came. We find there's more portion in the hand roll than Gonoe Sushi. We loved it!!! The star of the show is the boat. Very beautiful! The sushi chef decorated very nice and tastes wonderful! I know this restaurant usually gets high scores, but I have to give it 2 stars. The dining environment is pretty comfortable, but the food and service were not that good. My friends and I ordered a medium Sashimi tray for dinner (about 40 pieces). There were around 6 kinds of different fishes. However, we felt fish bones on 2 kinds of the fishes, and veins on the other 2 kinds of the fishes. Service was OK. But the server misplaced our order for desserts. When we asked for change, the server said she ordered another dessert for us, because the one we ordered originally was sold out. And they did not explain it to us in advance. Ordered take out and not really happy with what I received. I ordered the Diablo roll and it said on the menu that it was made with Jalapeño peppers. When I brought it home, the roll had pickled banana pepper instead. Such a weird taste, never had sour sushi before. Definitely do not recommend coming here. I've only had takeout from here and usually just order the standard sushi, sashimi, maki combo. It's excellent. Consistently fresh and high quality with thick cuts of fish.
