I came to The Tombs to watch the tennis match but ended up staying for the food--and I'm glad I did. The brisket sandwich was outstanding: generously portioned, tender, and packed with flavor. At $22, it was worth every penny. I swapped the fries for a Caesar salad, which was fresh and a nice complement to the meal. We sat at the bar where Kate, our bartender, took excellent care of us. She was friendly, attentive, and very accommodating, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere has that classic DC bar feel--lively yet laid-back. If that's your vibe, you'll feel right at home here. I'll definitely be back, and the brisket sandwich will be the first thing I order again.
In honor of my friends 21st, we had to start the day, and end the day, and The Tombs in Georgetown. We all started with delicious boozy milkshakes. I got the White Russian, and it was super delicious!! I could drink so many of these!! We also tried various breakfast options and shared some crab and artichoke dip. Our server was extremely kind, it was her first day, and brought out a brownie with ice cream to continue to celebrate my friend. The Tombs is a fun place to visit if you are looking for a pre-tailgate meal, as the football game later that afternoon brought a lively crowd.
Was served the worst reuben of my life here. No dressing, barely any sauerkraut, and what sauerkraut there was tasted like soggy dog food. The meat also tasted bad-- very unflavorful. Highly disappointed.
For a basic "university local bar" is as good as it gets. Down dodgy looking stairs to expansive well appointed sports bar with heavy boat club ambience. Good service with mixture of students and visitors. Menu good for such a bar and good bar choices. Surprisingly there is a real active fireplace. Tome beer ok but nothing special. Brisket with spiced fries just the right volume. There is a happy hour but watch out for karaoke night!parking ok if you are lucky.
Overall a great dive. Service is great, menu with a good variety, and Tombs Ale is a must. Decent prices. Paid street parking can get crowded at peak times. A bit noisy but fun.
My friend and I came here for an early dinner. This is the college bar of GU apparently so we figured we'd give it a try. The restaurant is downstairs and it's what you would expect for a pub almost. Casual, noisy got big screen tvs everywhere. For drinks we got the bold rock cider. When I gave the waitress my ID, she was very sassy and without even giving me a chance to say anything she said "oh no baby this is a fake" and was examining it in depth adding in "she even tried that" and walked away with my ID to the bar. I guess she had never seen the new VA IDs before which I've had for over a year now but that was my first time of someone ever thinking my real ID was a fake lol. It was comical too because I had just turned 28 a week ago so I guess I should take it as a compliment I look under 21. Thankfully the bartender knew it was real and I got my ID back. Besides that interesting encounter, the food itself was really good. I got the bbq pulled pork sandwich fries and the texas toast was fire. My friend got the smash burger with a salad and she said it was really good too. We were stuffed!
Great local pub. We were seated quickly for lunch and our food came very fast. I got the turkey sandwich which I really enjoyed, especially with the chili mayo. Bread was perfectly toasted! It's kind of underground so it's a darker, smaller vibe. Overall great food!
Came here with a large group before the first day of GU's undergraduates classes so it was packed with students. I got the summer chicken rice bowl and it was great, however chicken was a little dry, but a good portion of chicken. It was very busy but service was great and efficient. They do have daily specials.
The best. Walk down the steps and back in time to your college days. We have been going to the Tombs since we were in school. Then it became our neighborhood joint many years later, and we still come back even though we don't live here anymore. Best burgers, Reubens, wings...you get the idea. Served by cute and friendly Georgetown students. Now the salads are great too. And it's probably the last $8 glass of wine in town. The milkshakes are amazing too. Just go early before the students take over. One of the greatest places in Georgetown and always packed after the 5:30 Holy Trinity mass - a neighborhood tradition.
Nachos: Picture this. You're in love. You know it, your lover knows it. It's mutual, requited. Neither of you admit it, you just express it in every breath, every movement. You've been roaming around, soaking in the summer sun. It's fun. It's adoring. God it's a thrill. The bickering, the laughing, the bus rides, the city strolls, the entire buzzing street crowd just completely dissipating into background noise because nothing exists but the shared intensity between the two of you. And as you're living it, you know people would kill for it. It's electric. The kind of passion where you can't get enough of eachother, the kind where you know you're made for eachother, the kind where it kills to know there's no way in hell it's ever going to last. And so you're torn. Torn between loving it and leaving it. Torn between the entanglement and the unraveling. And between the loving and the living, there's all the places that become yours. The shared memories, the shared presence, the shared being. The shared ice cold glass of water in the insistent heat, the insanely. incredibly. absurdly. delicious plate of nachos. and you're not sure at all whether this was the best plate of bar nachos you've had or if your senses are heightened and everything is ten times better with your lover by your side. You're not sure if this bar you stumbled into is the perfectly, intentionally, fatefully, specially curated setting for this moment, or if you're just over the moon. You're not sure if they just mumbled an "I love you"- the music is blaring, the people are talking, the kitchen plates and silverware are clinking in the distance, or maybe its just your own thoughts transcribing what you've been dying to say. All you know is it's summer, you're young, and you've got so much love to give. And you've accepted the ephemeral reality that is this life. Everything is yours to feel and nothing is yours to keep. And there's nothing you can do about it except love it and appreciate it as deeply, genuinely, and as wholeheartedly as you can. Because this lover of yours is yours in this moment. And you may never get to say you got to keep it, but boy oh boy when you had it. Oh, others can only ever dream of it. And how precious it is to love and to let go. How bitter, how beautiful, how destructive, how raw, how invigorating, how incredible, it is to be. To be young, to be old, to be in love, to be in pain, to be in a college bar on a random Friday night eating nachos with your lover. All else: this bar is the college bar of dreams. it's for wasting away unapologetically. And god i thought the nachos were delicious until they handed me an ice cold Diet Coke on the side, tasted so good together I could've died. I was just on a high. Shoutout to the sweet waiters who checked in consistently. All my reverence is yours.
Family recommended this spot for lunch and it was awesome! We were able to get a table on a Friday at the lunch hour right away. Our server was so knowledgeable and attentive. He shared the history of the restaurant with us, which was cool to learn! I opted for the falafel pita wrap with a side mixed salad for my meal and it was so tasty. My husband chose the turkey sandwich and loved it as well. They do not have parking, but there are street spots available all around. The vibe inside the restaurant feels like a historical lounge/bar and is so fitting for Georgetown. They do offer alcohol but we didn't try anything during our visit.

I have greatly missed the world's greatest college hangout. I am happy to report it is now back in full force. Not even the COVID-19 global pandemic, the most devastating event in my lifetime, can KO a "Legend." I had the shrimp and gris for brunch with a little tabasco which was outstanding. The coffee is always good but not strong the way I prefer it. The prices are up very slightly from where they were pre-COVID, but certainly below much of the DMV. The unmatched atmosphere, friendly service and the delightful Georgetown student who was our waitress made for the best Sunday brunch. The Tombs is on my list again for Thanksgiving and Christmas when I return to my birth city. I cannot wait to get the chili, Tombs burger , and Chicken #1 on future visits. When you are a Georgetown DoubleHoya & Bleed Hoya Blue and you have a morning run along the Potomac-Across Key Bridge-Sprint up the Exorcist Steps-I can definitely say it does not get any better than a Sunday brunch at the Tombs! Please support this great restaurant where I have never had a bad meal. If you like American food--burgers, salads, great pasta and breakfast-the Tombs is the place to go when in Georgetown! Hoya Saxa! read more
It's been a while since last eating at the Tombs. A place a good friend introduced me to many years ago. It's a good option especially if you're wanting to watch a game and down a few beers in this Georgetown "Cheers" pub. The old wood, vintage posters and photos along with the plaques with patron names all over the place give it a unique vibe. Service was attentive and prompt as always. Had the veggie burger with sweet potato fries and my boss had the salmon salad. Our consensus was both very good solid dishes. Not a bad place to eat especially if you're taking in the row homes in N Street. read more

At the top of the 75 concrete steps, built in 1895 and featured in the 1973 movie "The Exorcist" is a restaurant/Pub known as the Tombs and also a location from the film. I wanted to visit here since I saw it on the list of filming locations for the movie. You have to go down a couple of sets of steps to get to it which might explain the name. Inside, It's a nice historic looking space with a vintage style. The menu is simple and affordable. The environment is cozy and not too loud, and my meal was delicious. I had my son's favorite, the Reuben. #theTombs #georgetowndc #filminglocations #theexorcist1973 read more

The roasted pepper soup and grilled cheese w. pepperjack cheese is amazing. This was my 2nd time frequenting this place and I wasn't disappointed. Next time I go I want to try their beyond burger. I went with a couple of co workers for lunch and no one had complaints. We also tried the totchos as a table and they were delicious. Being seated wasn't a tedious task and the food came out relatively fast. I'm sure this won't be my last time visiting, nice gem in the Georgetown neighborhood. read more
As a Georgetown student, this fantastic underground spot was my home away from home. A staple of 90% of Georgetown's student-body by either working, eating at, drinking too much at.... the Tombs is THE spot to see, be seen, have fun and eat with/by Georgetown students and even professors. A staple of Clyde's Group, Tombs was without a doubt my favorite spot to go to as a student. For food, the Tombs is the cheapest out of all Clyde's restaurants with the same quality you can be sure to receive at a Clyde's restaurant. Even more special? The fact that Tombs offers discount specials depending on which day of the week you go there. My favorites? Half Price Burger, Beef Rice Bowl and the AMAZING Chicken Parm with Spaghetti. If you are there for some food staples, go straight for the Crab Dip or the Mac and Cheese bites to start. Then, if it's not a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, go straight for the Salmon with Zucchini and Farro, Chicken Tenders, and/or the Beyond Burger. For dessert, get either the Brownie (make sure you ask the to warm it up), the Cookie Skillet and their INCREDIBLE seasonal fruit pies. For late night, get the Mozzarella Sticks - period. Looking for a dive/college bar vibe stay from 5-9PM sitting around the bar and get to know the amazing bartenders. Looking for a delicious low key lunch between classes, hit up Tombs from 11:30 AM-2:00PM. Looking for brunch, go over the weekends for a menu which includes Eggs Benedict and other brunch staples. Looking for a fun night with friends tombs is ALWAYS your spot from 10PM on, when most of the tables are removed and there is a bouncer at the door and only people 21+ can come in. Sticking to the tradition of themed nights comes my favorites: Trivia on Tuesdays starting at 10PM, Wednesday Senior Night, and Thursday-Friday are for dancing. This establishment will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart and after going there for almost every day during my Senior Year, and knowing most of the staff it was most definitely my home away from home. Food Specials: Mondays - Half Price Burgers Tuesday - Cheesesteak Wednesday - Chicken Parm Thursday - Rice Bowl Friday - Meatloaf Sunday Supper - Prime Rib Drink Specials (10PM to Close): Mondays - $2 Natty's & $3 Bourbon Drinks Tuesdays - $8 Coors Light Pitchers Wednesdays - $12 Palm Pitchers and $3 Vodka drinks Thursdays - $3 Bud Light Bottles and $4 Blue Pear drinks Fridays - $4 Fire Ball Shots Saturdays - $4 Fire Ball Shots Sundays - $10 Select Bottles of Wine (5PM-Close) read more

I've been a frequent visitor to Georgetown over the past 5 years and I just recently found out about this place. A bartender at a good spot in Rosslyn told me about it and I had to check it out. So my cousin and I went over the Key Bridge on a Sunday early evening. The place checks out as others have reviewed, definitely an old school dive vibe inside. You can feel the history sitting at the bar, even the bar stools give me a hundred years old. Our bartender John was very welcoming after I told him its our first visit to the place. We got a few drinks and ordered some wings. They have a fun menu with nightly drink specials. The wings were spot on and I could see how the other items could be a hit. Looking around the place it had a very diverse crowd. Obviously college students but also old timers, business folks and professional yuppie types like us. I could see this place being a regular hangout and a fun place to meet some interesting folks. I def recommend a visit to this spot if you're in the area. Shout out to "John", he made our visit extra. read more

One of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Came here with my father as he recommended the burgers and was not disappointed. Correctly cooked, seasoned, and topped with a thick slice of cheese and fresh tomato and lettuce. If you're in Georgetown, this is the place to visit for the quintessential burger. Décor is all preppy Georgetown U sports memorabilia and press clippings. Great spot, I'd return. read more

Beloved watering hole that makes you feel at home. We had the crab and artichoke dip, fried "hot" chicken sandwich, and grilled cheese with fries. Friendly and helpful waitstaff with a sense of humor. Came back at night to find a live DJ and flip cup tournament. Forever the best bar in DC. read more

Tombs is a pretty nice spot, you pretty much get anything you get from Clyde's there because they are related. Their steak is a 10/10, incredibly soft but feels a little too buttered. If you're looking for some basic American meals, don't overlook tombs. read more
I heard Tombs is a Georgetown college bar, so I thought the food and service would be bad here. Maybe that's just a UVA bar problem. Idk if I can say wahoowa anymore, after having a life changing experience at Tombs. I never liked bar food, until I tried Tombs. Maybe it was the lack of oxygen in my brain because I came right after a brutal workout at the exorcist steps. It didn't involve an exorcism. Or maybe the food was truly good. Anyway, I was a big fan. I got the chicken Parmesan. It needed more sauce at first, so I asked for more and they kindly brought some over to me. After that, I was super happy with the food! Like I said, life changing....who goes to a bar for FOOD? Not uva kids, but definitely Georgetown kids. I also tried my friend's beef nachos. Aka I ate a lot of them because when there's food in front of me, I just eat. They were good too!! My friend liked her salad, although it looked like rabbit food imo. Friend: "are you going to write a shitty review of my college bar?" read more
I really dig The Tombs. This was the location for the gang in St. Elmo's Fire way back in the eighties. It was really cool to check it out. We stopped by during the day and had the house brew known as Tombs Ale and it was really tasty. The bartender was sweet and attentive and the lunch crowd was diverse-students and professionals. The basement bar and restaurant has a rowing motif and decor. Lots of wood. read more

As is the case with many mediocre DC restaurants, I was lured in by the really cool name. And it IS a cool environment - underground, very cozy, bricks and a huge fireplace, etc. My food and drink were mainly disappointing, though. While my fiancé apparently loved his burger and my nachos were fine, the chili I ordered as the other half of my meal tasted like straight up ketchup. I don't know wtf they did, but there was definitely ketchup in that chili, and it definitely did not work. Drinks - the Hoya cider literally just tasted like fireball. I tasted zero apple. I tried the spiked pumpkin spice latte too, which just tasted like coffee. I didn't taste any pumpkin and barely tasted any alcohol. So either my tastebuds were way off today, or they truly have no idea how to balance or blend flavors here at all. I don't have a cold or any other type of taste-altering illness, so I'm going to have to assume it's the latter. :/ In all fairness, their apple pie WAS delicious, so that was one tiny redeeming factor. read more

The Tombs checks all the boxes. Great ambiance! Great service! Great food! Check check and CHECK! Can't wait to pop back in next time we are in DC. A definite repeat. read more
This is a Georgetown institution. Yeah to the person who just pops by here, it is just another average pub. I think someone made note of this already. But um, this is a block from GU's main campus - of course you'll see this place pretty much filled with students, alumni, parents and some area locals as well. But in terms of the vibe - this is a great place to get that GU experience. The beers here are pretty cheap (can't complain about a $3.65 pint of local draft beer) and the food is actually quite tasty. For brunch they even serve some free tasty cinnamon coffee cake, which hits the spot. I've had a lot of the bar/pub fare here but personally I like their burgers a lot. The meat is always cooked right, tastes juicy and I love the trimmings of the bacon burger with onions. MMMMM! Even the veggie burger here tastes decent. I've always been a fan of the warm/welcoming decor, complete with fireplace and also lots of relics of Georgetown's old school sporting heritage. The servers are friendly and it's nice to be in the company of a active crowd here. Again, chances are if you didn't go to GU you might not fully appreciate how often we used to come here as students (and even as alumni) and relished in the vibe - but I also think it's still a nice place to visit if you happen to be near campus and want some decent food. The place can get loud, so it's best to come with a group of friends to add to the boisterous atmosphere. read more

June 2019. I had the French Toast with bacon for brunch. French Toast: The subtlety of the cinnamon was perfect. The bread was slightly soggy with egg. Another 30 seconds and it would've been perfect. The apple topping was good. Overall, a slightly above-average dish that was worth the $12. Bacon: The bacon was so over-cooked, it was brittle and one bite shattered the entire strip. Tasted burnt. Not pleasant. Service: The poor bartender was by himself and the restaurant was packed, so service was slow. But he kept a smile on his face and sincerity in his voice. Atmosphere: Even though I was solo, I should've gotten a table instead of sitting at the bar. A few minutes after I arrived, some female students sat down next to me and were SO loud, I put my earbuds in to drown out their nasally sentences that all seemed to start with "Like, oh my god you guys..." Not overly impressed, but I see where this establishment would be a Georgetown student's commonplace. read more

What a solid hidden gem in Georgetown! It is underground, so there may be no phone service. Other than that, the food was quite satisfying, and their drinks are pretttyy cheap, considering we are in DC. My coworker took me here and we got fish tacos and the crab cake. My coworker enjoyed her fish tacos and it was pretty filling. The crab cake on the other hand seemed a bit small for my taste and wasn't that filling. However, the coleslaw, fries, and crab cake overall were pretty tasty. They also had a Wednesday special of chicken pasta which looked amazing, and I was debating between that and this crab cake entree, and I wish I went with that. All in all, I do love the atmosphere here and the food all did look pretty good. Will be coming back here again to try more entrees and to definitely try out some of their appetizers. read more
