We recently tried The Toasted Yolk Cafe for the first time on a weekday. The place wasn't busy, but the service was slow. Maybe they were short-staffed that day. Once we received our order, everything was tasty. I ordered The Yolk Lover's Breakfast with the French Toast. The bacon was good and crispy. We also had the Breakfast Burrito. My husband enjoyed it, but said the hash brown casserole was "just ok". The place is bright and open, with plenty of natural light. So, to start off, my previous experiences, started off good and sadly this was the final culmination of from my first time here was top notch across the board, food, service environment, and each time, though the food stayed great, service, in terms of timeliness and demeanor, had a steady decline, nothing horrible review, they should take the reviews, they've received, and right the ship. Maybe because they have enough visitors, for whatever reason. So to keep to the facts, my GF explained to the server about her allergies (bad bloating to gluten severe, life threatening when exposed to grapes and shellfish) the server mentioned the fruit medley is mixed together but will ask them to cut fresh strawberries to avoid any issues. We get our food which was good of course but not fruit yet, we figured they were doing as he said he'd asked. The strawberries arrive after she had about half her meal, we were chatting, so we weren't worrying at all, so when the fruit came, she took sip of water then had a little, in minutes she started grimacing, I asked she feared there was cross contamination. Even worse possibly as she truly looked at the strawberries and shown me, they looked as if they were separated as they looked a bit mushy as in juices9 their fruit medley has strawberries, grapes and cantaloupe. I'm a bit worried as she drank both the rest her h2o and mine and then went to restroom due to stating she felt nauseous. I asked for more water and a manager from one of the front desk girls who help with wait times, that was walking by, she kindly said ok, I didn't do a time check but notice the guy that brought my drink earlier in the Hawaiian shirt walked by a couple of times, and another man who wore a light tan pullover style zippered sweater. after their casual walks back and forth, I saw my server approach, I waved him to come over, my gf was in the restroom for at least 3-5 min and now wonder if she is ok, as he comes over, I state firmly, "I need a manager and a glass of water now, I did not raise my voice to avoid a scene. About 30 seconds later a bald gentleman approached, I honestly didn't care about his name I was just concerned for her health, I explained what happened about grapes possibly being crossed contaminated, he says he keeps fruit separate (so either he lied or the server lied or did not know, my gf worked in the service industry and servers help at times so again someone either lied or doesn't know. At this point my gf arrives after a female did go check on her at my asking, he reiterates to the fruit policy, and she tells him the server said the fruit medley is mixed together. He was silent but tried to halfhearted restate the policy but confused how it still could have happened. During our dialogue I could see from peripheral vison the tan sweatered man leaning on the wall legs an arm crossed, I didn't look up to his face, for felt OI would have gotten agitated with his facial expression. I ask the manager who the man was, he states he's one of the owners. I explain to him his demeanor and overwatch posture was unnecessary and as a former multi deployment combat vet I am sensing his posture as an attempt to be intimidating. He stated he was just making sure things are ok, I explain that if that were the case he could have intervened or allowed you to resolve this unsupervised. He is not helping the situation, I go on to remind him that Africans in the USA have enough imposed stigma from outside elements, his demonstrated behavior does not help. The manager asks him to pick up the tab I state I never asked and I will pay for our meal, I just need to make them aware to not be complacent, I work at UAB and did not want to spend my Sunday at the busiest E.R. in the state. He insists and I accept because I felt my anxiety start to swell and also didn't wish to be in handcuffs for disorderly conduct, or violence. I asked for 2 to go boxes, packed and we prepared to leave, the owner, the sweater guy then walks by, I didn't acknowledge him for concern, of the overwhelming violence I know would have erupted, had we locked eyes, my gf needs me by her side not in a cell. The dismissive, condescending, nature of the manager and the owner creates a trickle effect on subordinate staff that significantly hinders an establishment's reputation. Most businesses within 1st five years, they I believe are on year three and only have 5 reviews with a total 3.0 rating, Birmingham is a growing vibrant city , with a eclectic and VAST food variety to include the massive variety downtown, The leadership would be served well to remember they are not only brunch place in the immediate area and downtown is competitive a new higher caliber Mexican restaurant opened, literally, a 5 min walk, 1 min drive from them and came here to support a familiar face. Since I am new to the area I decided to ask her questions about the newly development of businesses in this area primarily food spots. I politely asked her to sit down to just have a couple of words. She sat and I asked a couple of questions. About the area. Then, within 10 seconds of the conversation the "manager" walks up and points to the front door and says to her I need you back at your station. She excused herself and he walked away. This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of going to The Toasted Yolk Cafe. This place really impressed me from the time I walked in the door to the time I left. Walking in, the place was booming and busy, but we were seated within minutes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I loved the painted walls they had a mural-like feel to them. The staff was great. I sat and observed everyone for a while, including the owner and two managers, and man, what a great team. This is a fantastic Black-owned business that deserves to be packed every day I mean, a line out the door! Now, let's get into the food. Since this is a brunch place, I naturally had to order from both menus! The first dish I ordered was the bacon cheeseburger. Let me start off by saying you get what you pay for here. The prices are reasonable and affordable, and the portion sizes are huge! Now, back to the burger this thing was massive and juicy, even with it being cooked well-done (my fault, I didn't specify medium-well). It was still good nonetheless. Not much more to say about it, but that's not a bad thing. The burger gets the job done. Solid 8/10. The cheese grits, y'all, were so good a perfect blend of cheese and creaminess. Each bite had that slight black pepper kick. I cleared that bowl in seconds. My only complaint was that it needed just a pinch more salt, which I added myself. I really like this new spot! Decided to try it out for lunch and it was great option. It was Friday and busy but sure the $5.50 mimosa contributed to this. The environment is very inviting and very nicely decorated. I love the wall art and should have taken more pictures. The service we received was good and very quick. I recently visited The Toasted Yolk Cafe and had a pretty mixed experience. They don't take reservations, so we added ourselves to the waitlist about 45 minutes before arriving. Even with that, we still had to wait about 30 minutes after checking in to be seated. It was very packed and loud, which made the wait feel even longer. Once seated, service was very slow. We waited around 15 minutes before our waitress brought waters or introduced herself. We started with sangrias and the churro-style donuts. The donuts were comped for signing up for promotional emails and were really good, especially with the caramel sauce!! For entrees, I ordered the Yolk Lovers Breakfast with hashbrown casserole and a pancake, and my friend got the Double Decker Omelette. Once the food finally arrived, it was actually very delicious -- everything was flavorful and cooked well. That said, we arrived at 1:30 and didn't leave until around 3:30, and the long wait times throughout the experience just aren't worth it to me. This was a wholly unpleasant experience with the exception of a very busy but kind bartender named Deonte. They were most certainly understaffed and we could see the literal yards-long, foot-high piles of dirty dishes in the kitchen every time the door swung open. I told my wife, "This is not gonna be quick," and I was right. Our food took more than 45 minutes to get to us (crazy!) and when it arrived, the shrimp were so off-smelling that I sent it back and asked for a refund. I did enjoy the portion sizes they're very generous so you definitely get your monies worth. The signature dish(shrimp & grits) is what I ordered and I must say they delivered on the signature dish. The service wasn't the best. I assume they were short staffed being the bartenders doubled as waiters. After waiting over 10 minutes someone eventually came to the table to take the order. After another 30-35 minutes the food came out. It was just sat down and before I could ask for syrup the waitress was gone . So I had to flag another down who was polite and brought warm syrup. Toasted Yolk is a restaurant chain serving breakfast, brunch, and lunch in what I would describe as a slightly upgraded diner-style setting. It's a vibrantly decorated space with good natural light. As diners usually depend on their fast and friendly service, today's experience unfortunately did not measure up. As we entered, we were prompted greeted with a "how many"? Our party of two was seated at a table for four and our server arrived shortly thereafter. The menus are large and rectangular shaped with an almost overwhelming amount of choices. We decided to keep it simple and ordered basic pancakes, turkey sausage, hash brown casserole and scrambled eggs. Our food arrived about 10 minutes later, but our actual server did not reappear until we almost done with the meal. The food was fresh and well prepared except for the pancakes; one plate had a nicely prepared fluffy golden pancake, while the other looked and tasted overcooked. When we mentioned this to our server, she just walked away. We were done eating and about 10 minutes passed as we were waiting for her to return to hopefully bring the bill, but then noticed her leaving the restaurant and walking away down the sidewalk in front. Still no one came to explain the situation. We then asked another server if a manager was on duty. The young manager finally arrived about 5 minutes later and he explained that our server had decided to leave for the day and that we had been assigned another server who had not come to the table. He asked if everything was okay with our meal, and noted the burned pancake, offered us togo waters, and recommended we reserve any tip for the new server who had never come to our table. Food: We shared the two-donut starter, and it was HEAVEN. We shared a Country Fried Steak breakfast with hash brown casserole. Excellent but we still had 1/2 steak we took home. The mimosa my wife head was top drawer. The coffee I had was surprisingly good. Service: We sat at the counter because there was a 1.5 hour wait. I have witnessed nothing more than a slow slide from the merely tone deaf & mediocre to borderline hostile service. I've never had any issue with the food. I entered at 2:25. They are open until 3:00, but how long do eggs take? Right? I was dumbfounded when the "hostess" eventually tore herself from rolling silver with her back to the door from the opposite side of the dining room and greeted me by coldly asking "I guess it's never too late for brunch eh?". WTF? 15 minutes later my coffee arrived and I placed my order. The waiter appeared to have never actually read the menu, and I thought I was going to have to explain to him that the words "substitute"and "a side of" did not mean the same thing. After finding the remains of the last diners meal stuck to the table and moving my coffee, water, creamer etc. to another table without the waiter offering any assistance, I began to understand that passive aggressive communication wasn't just the hostess's domain. He simply informed me that "You can move to another table" while walking away. After my two eggs over easy, cheese grits, bacon and a side of french toast arrived sans the sour dough toast I had substituted for the included biscuit had arrived. I ate them without the sourdough toast because the waiter actually argued with me about what I had ordered! His first clue that the french toast was à la carte and not a substitution should have been when it was preceded by my saying "substitute sour dough toast for the biscuit". His second clue would have been when I said "...and a side order of french toast." By 3:15 (for only twenty seven bucks plus a measly and completely undeserved 10% tip) I was no longer imposing on the staff of The Toasted Yolk with my presence. Service was slow and inattentive. Food was unsatisfying. I got the toasted yolk and it was overcooked. The bacon was undercooked. My husband's sausage seemed like the frozen kind you can get from Walmart. My husband, daughter and her boyfriend got coffees that were not drinkable. There was not much ambiance.
