I ordered the soba noodle bowl with cilantro avocado slaw. It's a bit spicy but i'd say that spice is more for the flavor and not unbearable, i don't like spicy at all but i'll tolerate this. The noodle bole includes low mean noodles, peanuts, red pepper flakes and can add chicken for an additional charge. It's right around $9.00 and again, for the amount of food, i'd probably want to just go to a restaurant and pick up take out so i wouldn't be hungry after the meal.

You would think, after 30 years I would have tried every place in Birmingham, and you would be wrong. To set this up, I love fine dining, steakhouses, Oyster bars, Sandwich shops, and McDonalds. What I really love is great food, comfort food and a feeling of warmth. It does NOT have to have a white tablecloth, but it does have to strike a cord usually of a past memory. That is my setup. Gilchrist has been where it sits in Birmingham, AL for a very long time. When my daughter wanted to take me there, I fought her because we were downtown at the time. All I asked her for was a GREAT BREAKFAST sandwich. I get to the place, and I instantly feel in love. Everything was old, potato chips lined up on the side wall with lots of candy by the cash register. Two table of men sitting just talking all about my age (I am old) or older. The bathroom was through the kitchen. On the side counter was two huge stainless-steel bowls with the remnants of Egg salad and Tuna Salad. I knew I was IN THE RIGHT PLACE. I ordered a comfort food breakfast Sandwich. Toasted Whole Wheat Toast, Egg, Cheese, Bacon and Mayo. I love that kind of sandwich. I was NOT disappointed. Now I want to go back for lunch for egg salad, tuna Salad or chicken salad. How did I miss the cultural gem all these decades. Want fancy, go somewhere else. Want history and taste, come to Gilchrist. I found my new place. Eat well, drink well and enjoy life.

I just got too small pie so we could each have one to ourselves the only thing I think I would've liked was possibly a lime on it, but the graham cracker crust was delicious. When I order from here, I do online ordering so I can just go inside and pick it up, which is what I did this time around. The restaurant was clean. There was a few people behind the counter. I would love to see them add mobile ordering in the future so you could order ahead or have your drink brought to wherever you're working in the library. I've been twice now, and both times I ordered the Golden Hour Latte. It's excellent--the cold foam is incredibly thick, and the flavor and texture are spot on. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Noir. On my first visit, I also tried the Chicken Pesto Panini with the pasta salad. The panini was delicious, though I'd personally prefer a different cheese than mozzarella. The real surprise was the pasta salad. At first glance, I wasn't sure I'd like it, but after one bite, I wished I had ordered a second container to take home. I don't usually enjoy creamy pasta salads, but this one completely changed my mind. The staff have been friendly, attentive, and happy to offer menu recommendations. On one visit, I arrived about 10-15 minutes before closing, and they were still welcoming. They explained that food service ends an hour before closing, but drinks are available until closing time. They currently follow the Hoover Library's hours and are open Wednesday through Sunday, with plans to expand to Mondays and Tuesdays once they have enough staff. When I tell you this place is SO GOOD! Let's talk:…read more 1. Atmosphere: the first thing you notice about a restaurant is the cleanliness and being a bartender myself, I pay extra attention. So walking in and seeing a spotless floor, clean tables, chairs, counters, etc. was an immediate green flag. There wasn't a crumb, sesame seed, or wrapper anywhere. Moving on to the actual vibe, it's so cute! A greenery wall with an LED sign is on the right and a cool mural wraps around the left to the front with pictures and even definitions for words and phrases you'd hear in Hawaii. The staff they have are super nice and knowledgeable, answering every question thrown at them with a smile and serving food insanely quick. It is a smaller storefront so there is limited seating and its counter serve so they run your food out to you (just a heads up if that's not the route you're looking for). 2. Food: Uh, YUM?! They have bowls you can choose from or they have build your own bowls that provide endless possibilities. I'm an Ahi Tuna fanatic so I opt for that in a rice bowl and a plethora of toppings. When I say you can actually TASTE the freshness, it's to die for. Like I'm actually obsessed with how crisp the veggies are, sweet the fruit is, and how delectably the tuna melts in your mouth. I took one bite and thought I was in Oahu for a minute (sadly I'm still in Alabama, oh well!). My son also loved his shrimp and crab on rice. But don't worry! They have chicken if that is more palatable for you. Only downside was they don't offer a kids portion for anything other than chicken but I promise you, that wasn't a complaint of mine for long once my son absolutely obliterated his meal (the fact that y'all made something so good that my six year old ate every bite impressed the heck out of me!). 3. Price: AFFORDABLE AS HELL. I expect to spend $45+ on us to eat stuff this good at a counter service place. After tip we didn't even spend $38. With endless toppings??? Dude, y'all have made a regular out of me. Seriously y'all, if you haven't tried this place: RUN DONT WALK. It's phenomenal!!!
