It was a happy hour end-of-the-work-week "brah" night out. As an NKOTB, I had no clue where to go, so Braddah Sly was like a guru guide and we ended up at The Temple Bar. It's not your typical cubical and space is limited, so when you get there at the right time take a moment to chill and let time fly bye... It's a cozy place to watch some games or people cheerfully walking along downtown Hilo's Farmers Market. The cocktails are sanctimonious, the prices are honorable, and the service is venerated. It was one of the best pious happy hours of my life. Naturally, I gave into temptation and indulged in their bon viveur pu pu's. Two mischievous angels popped out and landed on my shoulders. One tempted me with the Caprese Bites and each one was a delight, especially with a swirl of prosciutto. The waitstaff were polite but unprofessional sitting down at our table while taking our order made for an uncomfortable experience. Portion sizes were SHOCKINGLY VERY small. The $42 "8oz" steak was nowhere near 8oz, and the sashimi was sliced so thin you could practically see through it. Most dishes seemed portioned for someone on a juice cleanse. We discovered this cute little place on a quick search for something light to eat and drink. Oh boy, I'm so happy we got to try the tapas here. The oysters and ahi are so fresh and flavorful. I love that both of these dishes have jalapeños in it and the pepper took it up a notch. The last/third tapas we tried was the pork belly and it was also delicious...though we were wishing they had sprinkled in some jalapeños in this one as well. A little gem in Hilo! Every chance we come to Hilo, I always want to try new restaurant. This is such a cute place! Small, cozy and relaxing ambiance. We tried these: kumamoto oysters, torched tako salad, Belgian mussels with extra order of toasted sourdough bread, garlic shrimps with side order of fried rice. The Temple Craft Beer & Wine Bar is downtown Hilo's newest drinking establishment with a modern and clean vibe. Located in the old Mason Temple next to Jackie Rey's Restaurant, it's easy to locate. Parking is across the street in the public lot, but it's probably better and safer to take a ride share here. The Temple has eight beer taps with an equal amount of draft wine taps coming soon. In addition they have bottled and canned selections. The room has high ceilings, with a long comfortable bar including outlets below. High top tables are strewn about with a square of low tables and sofas in the corner. They also have a large kitchen for food. Soft opening was in June 2019, with more coming. It's a great start for a new concept business in Hilo. read more

Trying to switch up date nights in Hilo from our usuals and decided to try out The Temple Bar after looking over their food menu, so much options! Located next to Jackie Rey's on Keawe Street, the inside gives off an upbeat lounge atmosphere. Slightly dimmed lighting but more than enough ambient light all around, I think there was 3 tvs with different channels (one was on a food channel that inspired us to order a lot lol), and the furniture and decor gave a classy but modern feel. Going on a Friday night, we weren't surprised to find it super packed and we didn't think ahead to make reservations lol. We got seated at the bar tho and went to town on ordering. Decided on the ceviche (not pictured, was already feeling tipsy lmao), the oyster mushrooms, and the taco plate. Super simple street tacos but the carnitas was cooked perfectly so it tasted amazing! It comes with 3 tacos and you pay an upcharge to add another taco, but unfortunately they won't let you mix and match the meats between tri-tip, carnitas, and chicken. The oyster mushrooms came in this super creamy Marsala sauce, we ended up dipping the tacos in there too lol. The ceviche was nice and fresh and came with enough chips. For first round drinks, we got the Lime INda Coconut and the Sakura Dobel. Pretty pricey but innovative drinks and great flavors. Lovely plate for date night (if you don't mind a little bit of noise) and hanging out with friends! read more
