    Burger & Truffle Fries

We've been here before and I really liked their burger! My husband liked his French dip though he said next time he'd ask them to leave the cheese off which to me is weird but that's him. They must've been short a cook because we had to wait a while for our food though they apologized constantly. We like the setting, overlooking Hilo bay and it's not overly 'loud' as some lounges. The 'free drink' was nice, too (lol). It's nice to be able to stay at the Hilo Hawaiian and just pop-in to eat something in the same hotel without spending too much money next door at the restaurant.

We did not feel like driving anywhere so we went here for dinner on a Saturday night since the lounge/restaurant is located in the Hilo Hawaii hotel where we stayed. We started with two margaritas, one on the rocks, one frozen, and they were among the worst we ever had. They used real lime juice, which was good, but they had very little tequila and the wife's on the rocks was mostly ice and very little juice. My frozen tasted like ice. Neither one of us felt anything from them. Moving on to the food, I had the Italian beef sandwich and it was excellent. The meat was sliced very thin so it was tender and the toppings were spicy as advertised. I got au jus on the side for an additional $2 and it was a great accompaniment. The side salad was good. It was not exactly what I had at Big Al's in Chicago, but it was a competent rendition. The wife got the mushroom burger and loved the quality of the beef. Very lean and no gristle. The beef was local grass fed and you tell the difference. The burger was one of the best she had, even if it was cooked to well done instead of medium as requested. We had some desserts--ice cream, macaroons, and cheesecake, so overall it turned into quite the nice meal. Service was friendly and efficient. The view from the lounge cannot be beat. We were really pleasantly surprised and would eat there again.

Much better service than the steakhouse right next door and the steak cooked the way I asked. I wanted peace so I got it take out for my room. I had a cappuccino another morning from here which was pretty good. The better option if you're staying at the Hilo Hawaiian.

    Chicken karaage

I ordered the chicken karaage, and it was incredibly dry --so dry and hard that you'd need teeth of steel to chew it. The French fries were overly crispy and salty to the point of being inedible. Overall, a very disappointing experience.

This was a very quiet Sunday Nite. Friends ordered: Prime Rib Poké Baked Fries Konâ Kampachi Poké And caprese Our drink of choice was the Perfect Lilikoi Maragarita Our Server was awesome, Friendly and helpful. Our server came over our table and said " Harold Kama Jr. wants to buy us. Round of drinks?' Then 10 minutes later, Harold Kama Jr showed up!! What a blessing ! Mahalo nui loa Harold for drinks and Desserts too. Many blessings unto you!

We had a great happy hour here! Friendly service and great recommendations! And they even had Harry Potter on the tv!!!!! 50 points to ravenclaw!

We seated ourselves and a waitress came to greet us and handed a food and drink menu. She did informed us that the kitchen would close at 9pm and we arrived around 8:45pm so we just made it. I ordered the pork belly BLT with a side salad and an order of onion rings. I ordered the specialty drink called Luella. Our food was yummy. The onion rings really hit the spot. The Luella was strong and fruity just the way I like my alcoholic drinks. We listened to 10 minutes of live music and at 9pm the live music stopped. I did notice a sign about a 2 drink minimum during live music but we weren't bugged to order another drink. They do serve a light breakfast and coffee, lunch and dinner. Overall, the food and service was good. I will probably be back for a cup of coffee.

    Bacon Mac'N Cheese

Ambiance is amazing! Views of Mauna Kea and Hilo Bay came in craving Clams and Mac N' Cheese and was pleasantly surprised both dishes was on point!

Granted, the outside looks a little rough. There's mostly neon signs looking out at you from the dark inside. When you walk in, you'll notice the floors are concrete and that there are pool tables. Walking in, it seemed like the place has seen better days. However, looking at everyone in the bar, they all seemed like someone you could easily strike up a conversation with. My boyfriend and I were mostly looking forward to trying a margarita. We both ended up with a POG margarita. If you're unfamiliar with what POG juice is, it is Pineapple, Orange, and Guava juices mixed together. While the margarita was very strong, overall it was a delicious drink! We even got to try Lihing mui powder. If you go, look it up and ask for a glass rimmed with it! There is no air conditioning within the bar but we'd been there after sunset and didn't really feel hot. The bartender Kya? Kia? was so wonderful! After checking out the reviews, I did see some negative Nancy's on the platform talking about how this felt like a 'locals only' place. When I walked in, I made sure to strike up conversation with Kya and asked how her day was. Everyone on the island realizes you are probably vacationing. I was treated so wonderfully and Kya even gave me a recommendation for a hike in the national park. Be so kind to people and you will always make a friend! If dive bars are your thing, definitely check out Margarita Village! The margs are plenty!

There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

The big letdown was the ambiance. We were seated facing the street and parking lot the entire time ...no view...., just sad street. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype. Not terrible, but definitely not worth going out of your way for. The staff were all very nice though. Service friendly.

My wife and I stopped by for pre-dinner drinks and we absolutely loved the drinks that we were able to try out. I started out with a cocktail called the "Spam Dram", a crispy Spam fat-washed barrel-proof bourbon, combined with seared Spam and nori syrup and topped off with a spam musubi garnish. As one might guess, this drink was presented in a spam musubi tin, and atop the bed of crushed ice was an *entire* spam musubi. The drink was a perfect representation of spam musubi in a glass -- sweet, savory, and full of umami. Props to whichever bartender put together this creative drink. The next drink I ordered was the "Smoky Bear", another bourbon based cocktail. This one had bird's eye chili essence in it, and was much closer than your traditional Old Fashioned, except it had an incredible amount of smokiness and a punch of heat to it as well. If you enjoy stiff drinks with complexity, look no further than this cocktail. While we were seated at the bar, we overheard somebody close to us mentioning a password special that had been posted on the Instagram page of The Hidden Nene. We checked their latest story posted two hours earlier and the password special for the day was a "fizz me baby one more time", a strawberry and yuzu gin fizz. My wife ordered this cocktail as her second drink and loved how refreshing the drink tasted. Overall, if you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to check out The Hidden Nene if you're in Hilo.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.
