Local dive bar for regular Pau Hana's! This place was made for the local aunties and uncles. We came here after work on a Friday Night. Right away Aunty Joy greeted us with her pretty smile! Got us our drinks and gave us pupus! She made her rounds regularly and talked story with us between rounds. So sweet. Had live music playing and had the most fun time with the later waitresses that came in for their night shift. This is a mom and pop dive bar. Less Michelin star and more homey feel. I can't say enough good things about this place. Free pupus, karaoke, fairly priced drinks, you can sing karaoke in the main public bar area or privately in their karaoke room. All the staff are so nice, including the security. I feel so safe, that I've passed out in the bed of my truck and the staff kindly put me inside my truck. Truth. I typed in dive bars in Hilo. JoAnn's Lounge bar popped up. It's one of the better places I've chosen. One drink deep and I was offered a remarkable plate full of food. Met dude named Hale. Love the cozy feel of this bar! The service was great. They offer free pupus to enjoy along with your drinks. There are booth tables, but still sort of have your own privacy with the tall backs. There's karaoke where you can sing directly from your own table by just requesting your song to be added to the queue. It was fun to just be in the environment. My dirt cheap well drink would've been $8 after surcharge I don't understand any of these good reviews, it's like they are fabricated lies. There is one talking about karaoke and $3.25 well drinks all night on Friday. Another talks about this being a family oriented. This place is a complete sh*t-hole. Dark, dirty and they're total shisters. I ordered a well drink since I saw review said the prices on those was $3.25 all night on a Friday night...total lie. After starting at another bar, the next place to visit on my visit to Hilo was Joann's. The wonderful thing about visiting a small town is the fact that everyone has pretty similar opinions on places. We wanted to sing some karaoke and everyone consistently said that Joann's was the place to go on a Friday night! I'm glad this joint is located where it is. This building used to be home to the Fun Factory and McDonald's, a childhood memory. Without this place, the building would look like a ghost town. When you walk in, you'll notice the place is pretty drab. Green tables, dark carpets and Hawaiian print show how outdated this place really is. The bathrooms are in a weird area, always full because they were busy and not the nicest facility. Look past all of that and you would probably have a great time like I did. The cocktail waitresses were super efficient and frequently visited our tables for continuous drinks. The place offered free pupus, or appetizers. The food was actually good! Fried chicken, meatballs, edamame and more. Lots of different foods paired very well with any kind of drink you were enjoying. The drinks were reasonably prices. I paid $3.25 for vodka sodas all night. The karaoke was a little long of a wait. When you sign up, you can choose 3 songs at a time. When it's your turn, you get to sing all 3 songs before handing off the mic. It took about an hour for our turn. Thank goodness I was with great company. Being that Kim's closed down for good, Joann's is a great alternative to visit. Whenever I'm back in Hilo, this is a place I will definitely visit again. You grab a seat and more than ten pupu plates arrive at your table. I don't mean popcorn either. Poke, chicken katsu, shrimp, lau lau, etc. As long as you have a drink, the pupus are free. The wait staff also are on top of everything, clearing plates and refilling drinks as soon as they're empty. It is a karaoke bar and therefore very loud. We practically had to yell across the table to have a conversation. Also, the talent was less than. Perhaps it was an off night, but it was very hard on the ears, both noise level, and tone deaf wise. Probably not a place I would hang at for more than a few rounds but I will definitely be back because of the pupus and service! read more

Joann's is like a bar/lounge/karaoke kinda of place, that can be surprisingly busy any day of the week! They keep the pupus (appetizers) coming, and they change them up from day to day...(oh yeah the pupus are free!) you just pay for your drinks brought in by very pretty and friendly waitresses. Joann's is frequented by local police officers, city workers,and just people nearby who want to come in and have a drink and chill with co-workers and friends. Music is playing and once folks get a few drinks in them, they don't mind doing some karaoke. The mood is fun and easy going there, and the pupus are great! They can having anything from : chicken wings, lau lau, kimchi, grilled chicken, etc. its all good! Super local karaoke bar, with free pupus. The pupus were not bad. Lots of song choices and way lax. The bartender/server was awesome. We had a crazy group there on a Sunday night after the Merrie Monarch craziness and they totally accommodated us and put up with our shennanigans. Ample parking in the parking lot. I remember back in the day when it was the movie theaters and Fun Factory upstairs, and McDonalds downstairs..and Fiasco's across the street. Those were the days! I know 3 stars isn't much of a rating but it is super divey so don't go in expecting much. This was fun. The lounge (not quite a bar, not really a restaurant) was located in an interior area of an industrial building. It had Hawaiian print booths, old dudes at the bar singing karaoke to old songs by Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie (and weirdly, these guys were very good singers!). After the 2nd round of drinks, the waitress brought over 9 complimentary plates of pupu's, which was outrageous. There were cut up hot dogs with sauce, mystery meatballs, poke, a rice spagetti, spam and green beans, chicken with sauce... etc. It was all fun and different and weird and wonderful and I'm so glad we went. read more

Decided to try somewhere new so me and a few friends went Joanne's! After a few drinks they provided us with pupus for free which was very good. The waitress Kristine was very nice and constantly checked how we were doing and if we needed anything. Only gave 4stars because drinks that were ordered didn't seem as if they were made correctly.
