A friend that used to go to college in Hilo recommended this place as it was across the street from the Edith Kanakaole venue where we were attending a benefit concert later in the evening. ATMOSPHERE: It reminded me of a mix between a Korean and country bar with squeezed-in, button-studded booth seating, and dim lighting. It looked shady but was the total opposite, and was very clean. Truly a local watering hole. MENU: App-sized fare of sashimi, chicken wings, fries, steak, calamari, and shrimp. BEVERAGE: My Bud aluminum bottles were $3.50 a pop and were ice cold. Good deal! We all did shots of lemon drop that were refreshing and not too strong. FOOD: Sashimi - $12. The small plate of ahi were fresh and came with the usual shoyu-mustard sauce for dipping. Steak - $15. Though the menu didn't state "sizzling", another table's one was but ours was not. No biggie as the bone-in New York was perfectly seasoned and cooked exactly to our medium request, and sliced. Highly recommend. Wing Dings - $12. I'm not sure how many came in the basket but the one I tried, definitely frozen, was crispy with a savory seasoning. Because we ordered more than 2 beers, we were treated to a generous spread of complimentary apps. What the? You'd NEVER get that anywhere else!? I was told that's what Hilo bars are known for. We received 3 pieces of chicken wings that were seasoned differently from the wing dings, a plate of kau yuk (Chinese pork), kalua pig & cabbage, karaage chicken though the batter was a bit undercooked, and a green salad. Thanks for that, Peggy's! SERVICE: 2 younger female servers helped us, one friendlier than the other, but we're both good. The elderly male dish washer employee was very friendly and pointed bme in the right direction to the restrooms when he saw I was lost. OVERALL: Quaint vibe, cheap beer, good food, great deals, friendly service. Definitely was not on my list of to try's but will be recommended to others! read more

Extremely disappointed with our experience here. My family and I came in expecting to enjoy our night, but it ended up being one of the worst bar experiences we've had. We went up to the bar multiple times and were refused water 3 separate times. We also tried placing a food order, but the bartender told us food orders had to go through the server -- the issue was that no server came to our table for almost 2 hours. We were basically left sitting there unable to order. To make things worse, when it was time to close our tab, it took around 30 minutes just to get our cards back. The bar also felt extremely overcrowded to the point there was barely room to move around safely or comfortably. I understand places get busy, but being ignored, unable to order food, and waiting excessive amounts of time for basic service is unacceptable. Overall, the bartender experience and service completely ruined the night for us. We won't be returning. read more

Came in on a Saturday night to sing karaoke with friends and have some drinks. The place was mostly empty when we got there. We never got the songs that we paid for. The staff just kept playing their own stuff which is fine, but not if you're charging people for stuff you're not gonna give them. Also the drinks were very watered down and the staff had a very poor attitude even in lieu of the service they were not providing. And all with a spending minimum? For what? Being ignored? My husband and I both live on Oahu. We enjoy dive bars and hanging out with locals whenever we travel. The reviews weren't promising, but we understand that sometimes places like this get a bad rap because some people may not understand the local culture. Well, I'm disappointed to say the reviews were right. We left a popular spot with overpriced drinks to come here, thinking it would measure up to our favorite dives on Oahu. Strong drinks and friendly service with Aloha are the two basic requirements for a good local dive. This place had neither. The service was bland unless they knew you, and the 2-count pour for overpriced drinks was an insult to injury. They had two vodka selections--two! That wouldn't be so bad if Tito's wasn't priced like Ketel One. I actually have no idea what it cost because we didn't receive an itemized bill. The environment was okay. I enjoyed some of the karaoke being sung in the background, but I would not return here. I'd rather grab a bottle from the store and share it with friends at home. read more

Free pupus with karaoke! Say less! Before coming here, I didn't realize pupus were free in most bars in Hilo and Peggy's is no exception. They've probably been around longer than I've been alive because there are regulars who have frequented Peggy's for years. Everyone knows everyone here and they treat everyone like family. Pupus are free, yes, but that doesn't mean they're not good. They served poke, Mac salad, vegetables, noodles, etc and they were Ono!! You still have to pay for their other pupus (like fries, chicken tenders) but the pupus are great and you can ask for more as long as you're drinking. Their drinks are good too. Affordable and not super pricey. This place is not fancy at all and has a more homey feel to it. Highly recommend if you need a night out with friends that's very low key but fun! Karaoke is a dollar per song and you give to the waitress to input your selections. It is a shared/community karaoke so no private rooms here. read more

I'm not a big drinker, but they have pretty good pupus. On top of our drinks we ordered the sashimi, fried mandoo and the chicken wings. The sashimi was a great value that we got 2 orders. We had an older couple serving us when we first got there. They were really sweet and friendly. After being unsuccessful in finding a place in Hilo town showing the UFC fights, my bf and I decided to drink our sorrows away at Peggy's Place. There were a few other customers in the bar as we entered and sat in one of the booths. We waited for a few minutes before someone came to get our order. Their drink selection seemed a little more limited than most of the bars that I've been to and their pupu menu was pricey ($6 for fries, $12 for calamari!). Other customers (maybe regulars?) seemed to have free pupus but it was never offered to us. Probably won't be back. read more

THEY GIVE OUT FREE FOOD!! AMAZING. Well apparently not that amazing if you're from Hilo, because apparently that's the situation. You buy drinks, they feed you. And I'm not talking nuts and chips. We got Pork Tonkastu, Ahi Sashimi, Fish Cakes, and like 4 other things! WTF? The staff is super nice and on top of their game. We had 1 server which took care of an entire room and was quick and friendly. I'd hire her. Apparently this place used to be something else, and was run down and dingy. But they slapped a new coat of paint on her, bought new furniture and now is called Peggy's. It's awesome. Oh people also sing really old Kareoke songs, but whatever. I'm eating free food. Went to this place to watch a basketball game. When we arrived, all the TV's were set on the Football game. We asked the server if we could change the TV near us to the basketball game. She said, "no, sorry" and walked away. By then she had already taken our drink order. When she returned we quickly asked for our bill to find another bar to watch the game. She said our bill was $9.50 and to charge on the credit card, it was a minimum of $10 so she said, "can I charge $10 to your card?" By then I was taken aback at how this place was being run. I would not recommend this place. Coming from the west side of the island where tourism and hospitality is key, the service here was something that I am not used to. read more

1st of all, I'd have given Peggy's 5-stars if the male bartender wasn't so rude. I could tell that he wasn't just having a bad day, it was clear that he's always an ASS. Get rid of him and you'll have a more satisfied clientele. That being said, the upgrades are incredible, the place is clean, plenty of TV's, and they have Redd's Apple and Strawberry Ale on special all the time. There's hardly any info online about this bar and grill -- the most I could get was a very simple Facebook page. That doesn't stop it from being a hot spot though. The lady at Dollar Rent-A-Car suggested this place as a "chill bar for younger folk". Spacious place with plenty booths. Got some karaoke going on in a corner. No bar menu. Five of us went in for a drink to cool off from a hot day. Three beers and two mai tais. Drank Longboards that were advertised at $4. Paid bill but did not look at itemized prices. $34 for 5 drinks in a no-frills bar. Paid near resort prices. Not bringing friends there again as long as same owner. This was about noon, when we were the only ones there. And no, didn't get pupus as looks like we needed to order more. Understandable. Many other places friendlier with better views that can justify steep price. read more
