Our usual hotel in Hilo... Been coming here for years whenever we are in Hilo. Located on Banyan Drive, next to Liliokulani Park and Coconut Island. Also walking distance to Suisan Fish Market. A nice quiet area of Hilo. Hotel interior was refreshed probably over the last 10 years and it looks clean. Outside is a little dated, but totally okay. Upon check in, we were given two $10 meal discount coupon for the hotel restaurant, and used it for breakfast the next morning. Restaurant has nice views of Hilo Bay. Also there is a small enclosed bar area with nice bay views across the main lobby area. I think of the three hotel on Banyan Drive, this is the best one and have been satisfied with it ever the years.

Found Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Southwest Airlines while booking my flight as I wanted the points. Out of all the hotels that were available, this was the most reasonably priced and looked clean. I needed a room with two double Beds that could sleep four people. Hotel is close to the airport. Plenty of parking. I believe the resort fee was $40/ Night but you can park anywhere. They also have a parking garage. The hotel is right next to the Liliuokalani Park. Great for those Thales early morning walks with the other morning peeps. The lobby is a wide. Friendly staff and has a lounge and restaurant. Upon checking in, I got four free drink tickets and a free breakfast for each day we were staying at the hotel. You need a key to get up to the room at all times. When we got the room, the first thing we checked was the number of towels. So we called and they brought us more within a short time. The room is big and spacious for 4 people. There's a refrigerator in the room. Ice machines are only in the 6th and 8th floor. But you gotta go early because the other guests took all of it. The grounds are great. No hot tub to soak aching muscles after the days adventure. The pool has a beautiful view of the bay. They do have a gym that is a separate little building outside of the parking and on the main street. Hotel is close to other restaurants and short drive to Downtown Hilo. Hilo Hawaiian Hotel was a great experience and would be staying here again.

A room overlooking Hilo Bay and Coconut Island? Beautiful! Getting up to see this reminds me how much I miss Hilo. When checking in, me and my hubby got 2 comp drinks, plus $10 off per day off their WSW restaurant. Since our room wasn't ready when we checked in, we took advantage of the drink - yummy. Our room had a king size bed. It seemed pretty standard, but had lots of room to walk around and didn't feel stuffy. Will stay here again when in Hilo.

Spectacular in every way! Only one issue (not Hilo Hawaiian's fault) I did book on Priceline and they don't tell you clearly you have to pay a $35 daily fee upon check in. So that cheap price you got on PL ? For me it was $350 extra. Next time I'll book direct. Room was immaculate. Included a mini fridge. Crisp linens. Nice patio and I really enjoyed the pool. Walk to coconut island and the Japanese gardens. Just gorgeous! I do wish we had a bay view, I peeked at one and view was incredible. Our room had a garden view which was above the front side of the hotel. It was fine. I decided not to ask to switch rooms because front desk staff were so nice and I didn't want to be a complaining guest . The staff were all so lovely. Sadly, I did witness a few rude guests. How annoying! I mean we are literally in paradise... live Aloha when you are in Hawaii, people! Loved the free breakfast, and the Happy Hour is awesome- on Fri Sat nights they had terrific local live music. We ordered appetizers and beers and it was fine! Free parking. Filtered water to refill your water bottles. Very thoughtful touches And the lobby is just beautiful!! WiFi isn't the best but it works. I did not try the Steakhouse but it looked nice. Prices were moderate. We LOVED our stay at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. We love Hilo. I recommend.

It's been over 10 years since I've stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was recently there for a one night staycation. There has been a major update renovation to their rooms! The beds especially are so comfortable and the rooms clean and inviting. A Continental Breakfast is now served between 6:30am to 10am. Although it's limited to coffee, fruit, juice, pastry and cereal. It's a thoughtful addition! Thr staff of the hotel is very welcoming and helpful. The cocktail bar & lounge has a very good happy hour with very reasonable prices. The continental breakfast is also served here and there is a nice ocean view. With Kama'aina (local resident) rates, it is a very affordable. The location on Banyan Drive in Hilo is convenient. Highly recommended!

We were very disappointed with our stay. We came to the Big Island hoping to catch episode 40 and ended up getting back to our room late. I went to adjust the thermostat and noticed ants on the wall and ground. The next morning when I went to the front desk, they offered to spray the room for us. I went to tell my husband but decided I didn't want to be in a chemically room and when I told them never mind, they switched our rooms. However, this room also had ants. We didn't have any Wi-Fi in our room. Something about a storm in Oahu knocking out a tower. I also thought it was icky that the lotion was used in the new room. And to top it all off, check out is at noon. So why did housekeeping open our door before 9 am...even with the Do not Disturb sign on the door? For the price of the stay, we for sure didn't expect all of this.

What a good night's sleep I got here! It's been over 10+ years since I last stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in sleepy Hilo town. Yes, at night in Hilo, you can probably hear the lovely sounds of the croqui frogs. Some folks don't like the noise, but as for Bruddah man, I don't mind it at all. When I pulled into the hotel parking lot (in the early evening), I could hear the chirping noises of the croqui frogs. As for my accommodations - My hotel room was nice & comfy. Looks like the Hilo Hawaiian hotel has done a great job with securing the building, as well as maintenance of the hotel room. The hotel room had your standard amenities - coffee maker, refrigerator, hair dryer, large screen T.V., iron and ironing board. The hotel also provided soaps/lotions/shampoo/body wash. In the morning, there was a complimentary continental breakfast provided by the hotel. The simple continental breakfast consisted of - fresh fruit, oatmeal, pastries, juices, & hot coffee and tea. The room rate was very reasonable at ($169.15) per night, and after adding all the various taxes, the room was just under ($200.00 bucks). The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel also had a Kama'aina Special - No Resort Fee. All you have to do when checking in is provide a valid Hawaii ID/Driver's License for proof that you're a Kama'aina. Parking is free, but it's first come, first serve basis. I had a great night's sleep at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, no road noise, or honeymoon noises (see my review from the hotel I stayed at in Kona, Lol!). The bed was very comfortable, and there were many electrical outlets available so you could charge your electrical devices. I would say the highlight of my hotel stay was the spectacular ocean view from my hotel room! If you take a quick look at my pics, I'm sure one can appreciate this hotel.

10/11/24 Hilo Hawaiian Hotel 71 Banyan Dr Hilo, HI 96720 I stayed there for six nights in October for a high school reunion. This is the place where the locals stay when in Hilo, it's lower end than it's neighbor hotel but not by much in my opinion and a better value. There is ample self parking. There is a small unattended swimming pool at the back of the property. There is a well equipped modern fitness shack outside the front of the hotel on Banyan Drive. My Banyan view room was spacious with a workstation desk, cable TV, coffee maker and mini refrigerator. There was no microwave. The AC worked as expected. The only thing that didn't work was the AC outlets in the lamp bases that did not make contact to my plugs. The internet WiFi worked well and was on the slow side but I'm spoiled by my fiber internet at home. Room service was every other day which is fine with me. The staff was friendly and helpful. The included Continental breakfast was feeble with two bakery selections, one or two fruits, inconsistent oatmeal, juices and coffee. But it's better than nothing. A solid hotel and good value. Definitely will stay here again.

It's a nice hotel but I'd say the three and a half stars given by Yelpers is about right. The lobby is very attractive. Open aired from front to back. Very nice staff, from check-in, to the bartender, to the bell hops. It's all self parking, which is fine, especially because there's no charge. That's rare! And they have both outdoor and underground parking. They also have coin operated clothes washers and dryers. The pool is decent, nothing special. The view is nice... sits right along Hilo Bay. It's walking distance to a few restaurants and parks. But mostly you need to drive. The rooms are spacious and clean. That's probably the most important thing. And we had a room with a view of the bay, so can't complain about that. The serve "continental" breakfast, but don't get your expectations too high. It was coffee, tea, juice for drinks. Apples, banana bread, and some pastry for food. Oh, and some very watery oatmeal that I think they mis-cooked? Overall for the price and amenities, it's a nice place.

What an amazing stay we had here in January! Clean rooms, great location, beautiful grounds and attentive staff. Very much enjoyed my stay. Decent pool and gym, close walk to restaurants, downtown Hilo and a lovely quiet beach. The Continental breakfast was the only thing that was not my fav, not much to choose from. Fruit, some pastry, coffee, juice and oatmeal. Was hoping for something more traditional for the islands. I would without doubt or hesitation stay here again.

Visiting Hilo on a business trip, first time in a long time and we decided to stay at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was surprised it has been a while staying in a hotel on the islands and was quite surprised that they had to bell service and rooms are not cleaned or service daily we arrived on the 25 of July and was told by the front desk they were not cleaning the room if you run out something let the front desk know other then that they will come in on the 27th to empty your trash and change towels only. The hotel is okay, front desk staff one person was not the friendly maybe she had a bad day. Parking they have 4 different parking lots and the one on the side the same level as the hotel is very tight, so if you don't want nicks on you car better to park in the lower parking stalls. The Continental breakfast was ok, but if after eating there by the 3rd day found out they would discount your bill $5.00 total of $10.00 for a couple in a room off the restaurant bill if you want eat a set meal. Which we did and it was much more enjoyable. And less crowded, if there is no room you can take out your continental breakfast to your room or eat it in the lobby.

Sia at check-in was fantastic. Gave me a great room with a beautiful view. I met Mathew the bartender he was awesome. I love staying at the pool hardly any people now the steakhouse not so great service was horrible. Never checked on me. Food was called. It was my last night. I thought I was gonna have a great experience. The manager didn't even ask me how my dinner was. That was my only issue with my say otherwise, everything was fantastic.

Up until recently they allowed self parking across the street in another lot. Sorry, $30/day plus tax plus multiple tips/day and the loss of valuable vacation time standing in line waiting for valets to get the car is a non-starter. They have PLENTY of available parking space here, this is just a money grab. They also changed up the breakfast offering. Hilton offers an $18/day/guest benefit to purchase food, instead of setting up a continental breakfast. This used to work well when they setup in the lounge area with grab and go offerings reasonably priced, like spam musubi, pastries, fruits. But no more; now the only offerings are the vastly overpriced Ka Lihikai restaurant, and you cannot get breakfast there for anywhere near $18. The lovely morning coffee service that they used to have in the open air lobby has moved to a claustrophobic little meeting room. Art - sad to report that they're removed the ultra-classy Kim Taylor Reece B&W Hawaiian culture photos and replaced them with ordinary tourist-grade photos. The price felt fair overall, but I think many reviewers weighted the cleanliness and renovated…read morerustic aesthetic too heavily. Having stayed in 2-5 star hotels across the U.S., this property is a good example of how subjective hotel ratings can be. Hilo simply does not have the newer luxury resort inventory you find on the Kohala Coast, so don't assume another hotel is upscale because it has "Grand" in the name. I can understand the appeal of its boutique-style, active-traveler, eco-conscious, customer-friendly atmosphere, hence the skewed 5-star ratings. Our biggest disappointments were room size, cooling performance, and noise/poor acoustic privacy. I'd still give it a low 4 stars because of the location, cleanliness, Aloha atmosphere, and staff friendliness. The property offers very basic accommodations in what resembles an old Travelodge/Motel 6-type property but cleverly renovated. The owners clearly understood that with clean rooms, vinyl plank flooring, fresh paint, and updated furniture, and a hint of a Zen/Environmental/Aloha vibe, they could offer a strong alternative to Hilo's aging high-rise hotels. While there are wheelchair ramps, the property has three stories and no elevators which means you'll have to carry your luggage up the stairs for most the upper floors. Some rooms face the inlet/ocean across the street fronted by a very old looking fish pond, while most others look across to each other with a small garden areas between or the decent pool area (no hot tub.) There's free lobby coffee in a large pump dispenser since rooms lack coffee makers, plus complimentary bikes and paddleboards. A very small lagoon beach is directly across the street, with two decent restaurants within a stone's throw. Downtown Hilo is about a six-minute drive but probably not walkable for most people. Rooms are compact, and the bathrooms are tiny with no exhaust fan. The bed leaned softer than average, and the TV was smaller than most modern computer monitors. The A/C struggled with Hilo's humid climate but managed to keep the room barely cool enough for comfortable sleeping. Shower pressure and temperature were acceptable, though the showerhead sat around chin height for me at 5'11". The biggest drawback was noise and lack of sound privacy. The glass louver windows provide almost no sound insulation, so you hear everything outside your room -- kids running the halls, conversations, foot traffic, and nearby guests. Anyone outside your room could easily overhear conversations inside. There's also noticeable jet noise due to the airport proximity, though fortunately I don't recall hearing flights between 10:30 PM and 6:30 AM. Rates are typically less than the nearby aging high-rise hotels with more upscale branding (and more uneven reviews). If SCP is at least 20% cheaper than those competitors, it's probably the best value in Hilo. If it fits your budget, I would opt for the ocean view rooms with the balconies at the SCP. The hotel appeared to be finishing renovations on its last older rooms during our stay, so many of the older 1-2 star reviews are probably no longer relevant

There's no front desk so figuring out the code to your door can be a little challenging. I recommend calling well in advance to get any similar questions answered. The room was very clean and attractive. The mini-fridge was also most welcome. Terrific location and reasonably priced.

I totally went off of Yelp reviews in choosing a place to stay while in Hilo…read more Okay, I also researched the place to make sure it was legit. As far as booking a room, its really easy. You do it online and you get to chose which room you want, granted it's available. You pay a one night deposit to hold your reservation. I emailed Neil to see if he could run the balance so that way the room was all paid up. No problem, he emailed me back letting me know that he could do it. After you've booked you receive an email with your confirmation number. DON'T DELETE THAT EMAIL!!! You'll need the last 4 digits to get into the main door AND your room door. There is no front desk and no one there to check you in or out ... or so we thought .. read on ... When we arrived in Hilo it was well past 6pm. What I didn't expect was for Neil to be there waiting for us. But there he was! He helped us get in and told us where we could find restaurants for dinner and told us about Pauls Place (which is directly below). He's really a nice guy! I was not prepared for how awesome the room would be. Honestly, if you can forgo all of the luxuries of a resort .. you will love it here. It is in downtown Hilo, a block from Hilo's Farmers Market, and close to literally everything. Our room that we had was room 5, which consisted of 2 queen size beds, private bathroom, a huge closet, flat screen tv, ceiling fan, a small fridge, a coffee maker, small dining table and a lounger chair .. oh did I mention we had an AC in there as well. Which, really wasn't needed since Hilo is always cool in weather at night. There's also free wifi if you need it. The room was clean and it was definitely quiet at night. I read a few reviews where they stated that the bathroom shower would leak out water when showering. Although our shower was huge and the ledge thingy on the bottom wasn't 'tall', we didn't get any water splashed outside ... maybe we were more careful? Idk, but if your not having some huge water fest in the shower there shouldn't be any water flooding your bathroom floor. The beds were comfortable and I honestly didn't want to get out of bed every morning. We never had any issues with noise in the morning. Pauls Cafe downstairs wasn't too loud. But, you know it's morning and all the noises start in the AM just like at home .. plus we were already out and about by 7am. Go figure ... Check out is at 10am, but if you need to extend the time just call Neil! I would most definitely stay here time and time again. It was really great to not stay in a big hotel and I felt very comfortable there. Recommend them? Heck yes!! Side note: We weren't able to try Paul's food while there :( So we plan to on our next trip there! 10/100 Challenge 2018

Nothing good to say about this place…read more We couldn't stay because it was bad from the moment we got there. Hot water would take 15-20 minutes to get to the shower. No ice machine, no internet, no TV, no place to set your luggage except the floor. The pictures must be old because when we got there it was more rundown. Stairs were sketchy and the place really needs some work all around. Unsure why anyone would give this place a 5 star review when I am giving it one star because you have to give something. Do not make a reservation unless you want to give your money away because they have it posted that if you have a complaint about this place built in 1911, it will not suffice to get a refund of your first day if you don't cancel 24 hours prior. I highly recommend asking to see your room and tour the property before choosing to stay there so you know what you are getting yourself in to.

It is only a few blocks away from the famous Farmers Market and lots of dining places around. It is also one of the few places in Hilo that is pet friendly and allows pets to stay. We always bring our two dogs with us when we visit so we don't have to board them while we are gone. Their amazing breakfast is really a fine example of what a real B&B should serve. For this stay they had fresh fruits, eggs, potatoes, breads, yogurt, juices and coffee. Everything was prepared by Carolina who was our host. She was so accommodating and attentive. She made an extra effort to allow us an early check in. We will be back again when we come to visit Hilo. Also, please note that they have a Kamaaina discount so be sure to note the request in the comments section when you book the reservation.

They had everything we needed for a comfortable stay (including air conditioning), and it was all done with great style (Matthew, the owner, has a fabulous decorative sense). The house keeper, Carolina, was sweet and a great conversationalist. She and Matthew talked to us about our plans, making sure we hit the highlights of Hilo. The house is located a few blocks away from downtown and very convenient to everything we wanted to see and do. There is plenty of street parking, and we felt safe in the location. To top it all off, the food was fabulous. They were very accommodating to dietary restrictions, and made sure there was lots of fresh, local produce for their guests. My partner and I hope we are lucky enough to return for another stay at the Hilo Bay Hale Bed & Breakfast.
