This hotel may not be for everyone. For our trip it was very good and the best accomondation option for us in Hilo. The Good - The SPC is in a great location for visiting Volcano National Park. It is an easy 35-40 minute drive. The SPC is also close to waterfalls, botanic gardens and a short drive to downtown Hilo. There is a beautiful Japanese garden within walking distance and also a really nice walking path along the bay. There are coffee shops and good places to eat also within walking distance. The hotel is basically a converted eco friendly motel. There is plenty of free and secure parking, something not easy to find in Hawaii. Our room was clean and spacious enough. We had 3 adults in a two bed room. The bathroom was tight but not problematic. I am 6 feet tall and had zero issues. The rooms have in wall AC. This wasn't an issue for us as the the November nights were cool and we used the quiet and charming wooden overhead fan. Our room was on the first floor and we had a very nice pool view. The pool is quite nice and serene and so are the gardens. Our beds were comfortable. Complimentary coffee and filtered water are given in the lobby. They also have bikes and paddle boards available. There are events on different days. When we arrived there was a really good female singer playing the ukulele. The Not So Good - As others have written, the hotel is within 1/2 mile of Hilo Airport and on a main road. It can be loud. If one is a light sleeper, the SPC is probably not for you. We were early risers to get to Volcano National Park or other attractions so it did not bother us. The SPC is not a high end resort, it is mid range plus hotel. It didn't have the price either of a high end resort. We would return to the SPC hotel if we ever got back to Hilo. We loved the Big Island and Hilo was a really nice contrast to the Kona area. Both areas have a unique charm and vibe.

I really love this hotel! It's very clean and comfortable, staff are friendly and helpful. It's close to a lot of restaurants, bars and close to beaches. It's about 45 mins to Volcano NP. Close to Old Down Town Hilo (5 mins drive). Going to repeat it again staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are very clean!

The old Hilo Seaside Hotel on the corner of Kalanianaole Highway and Banyan Drive, across Reed's Bay prime location central to Hilo staples like Ken's and The Ponds Restaurants. The hotel itself consists of buildings with a central tropical courtyard or the swimming pool. Small gym, bikes to borrow, a mediation and common area. The room was clean and cozy. Much effort made in reducing carbon footprint by having the ability to open windows instead of only air conditioning. **note to management, please ask your cleaning staff to keep their voices down as their yelling between rooms are NOT conducive to sleeping in or quiet time.

Amazing stay! Grounds are a beautiful blend of indoor and outdoor living giving you the classic Hawaiian experience. Rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Located next door to Coconut Grill and around the corner (walking distance) from the famous Ken's House of Pancakes! There were free paddle board rentals and we rented them for a cruise around Hilo Bay where we saw so many Honu! Ample parking and centrally located to get around Hilo!

Beautifully decorated lobby that was a fun hangout spot

Cutest boutique hotel in Hilo. So happy I found this location in a pinch. The lobby had lovely music playing every evening that truly set the mood of how Hawaii should be felt.

There are 3 hotels in Hilo: Hilo Hawaiian, Doubletree (Grand Naniloa), and SCP Hilo. I've stayed at all three so when you compare SCP against the other 2 hotels, it falls short. However, I don't think it's fair to compare this hotel to the others because this property was formerly a motel type of place that's been recently upgraded. It's a small boutique hotel and it's fine. You have a two story walk up in one (Hukilau) section, and then just a one story building with a pool in the middle (kinda gives a Melrose Place, the tv show, vibe). No elevators, valet, bell boys, spa or room service here. Everything is pretty much self serve, which was fine for what we needed. PARKING You can park on the street along the pond, or there's a lot in the back. Do not park on the street closest to the koi pond in the area that has "no parking" signs. CHECK IN Staff is super helpful and friendly. Complimentary coffee at front desk. Water filter/dispenser is available in lobby. Lobby is nice and peaceful with hammock chairs overlooking the koi pond. POOL When we went, there was a raging kids birthday party at the pool with tons of kids and people. I don't know if they rented it out as a venue or if all those people were actually hotel guests, but they had a table with food and snacks and cake and everything. It was super loud and if you get a room surrounding the pool, you will hear it. I saw one lady complaining that her room was not a "peaceful room" as described on the website. She was furious and it was hilarious watching her. FYI This is not the Ritz Carlton! There's going to be some daytime noise if you're around the pool. NOISE Speaking of noise. Look at the map, this hotel is next to .... the airport. Hilo is not a big airport but big planes with engines fly here, starting around 5:55a or so lol. If you want a really quiet room, the Doubletree Grand Naniloa has ocean front suites for $$$$ that are super quiet, you can't even hear the coqui frogs in that room. Or just get earplugs and anticipate the noise. Or just wake up when that first plane comes in and go outside and walk, it's such a pretty area of Hilo. FITNESS CENTER It's a small room with 2 peloton bikes and dumbbell weights plus an area to work out. No treadmill or machines. It's okay. If you want to run just go outside and run the loop. RESORT FEE $10 I wouldn't call this a resort. But there is a $10 daily fee for all the amenities which I think is fair. Parking, coffee, water, paddleboard rental, pool, use of the gym, lounge areas. ROOMS The rooms are small but have enough. Ours had 2 full size beds, a desk, a refrigerator, and a bathroom. All the essentials for an overnight stay. No complaints. Pillow was kind of wimpy but I slept. RESTAURANTS There's a restaurant next to this place called Coconut Grill, but we walked to Ken's Pancake House. There are a few eateries within walking distance but you really do need a car to see Hilo. Would I stay here again? Yes. Just adjust your expectations of this place and it's a great location and the place itself is newly upgraded. If you want a big hotel, this is not it, but if you want a smaller boutique hotel, this place is great.

Very nice and helpful receptionists. The place is clean, calmed and beautiful with a nature relaxing atmosphere. However, room walls and windows look super old. Noise gets through very easily. Rooms have been renovated and are nicely decorated but you can still feel the old and the job on some of the renovations is very poor. I thought it would be right on the water but it's actually across the street from the water. Place is decent and we had a pleasant stay, just wish it was by the water and nicer rooms with better renovations that would make it look more expensive.

Is this a monitor or TV
    Pereze L.

Public areas are well presented. The rooms are lacking. We had a king room with a 13" monitor. Bathrooms so tiny your legs hit the door when seated on the toilet. The mini fridge leaked water and the window AC was super loud. No sitting in the room beyond the bed. Oddly enough only half the room had furniture.

First off, super friendly staff. Very welcoming, informative, and kind. The facility itself must be pretty old, but it has been refurbished with modern touches. For example, there are bikes and paddleboard's available for a day use (first come first serve). There are two pelotons in the gym. They offer meditation and other activities by the pool. Guests are even given samples of kombucha upon check-in. There aren't a lot of new hotel/resort options available in Hilo. The vibe here sit somewhere between a nice hostel and motel. Our unit 110 was tucked in the corner, so maybe not as loud as the ones right next to the pool however, noise travels pretty easily throughout the nearby rooms. Cleanliness of the room, linens, and bathroom were acceptable. The parking lot is tight and choppy in some spots. At over $250 per night in the off-season, I don't find this to be an incredible value. We needed a place to stay close to Hilo airport, and this served the purpose

Drove to Hilo from Kona and didn't feel like driving back after a long day. SCP Hilo Hotel had the right accommodation at the right price! We called as we were having dinner, contemplating whether we should call around for a room or just suck it up and head back. This was the second place we tried (after Pakalana Inn, since it was closest to the restaurant we were at) and, to our surprise, they had a room available for a very reasonable price! The receptionist was welcoming, helpful and friendly. She hooked us up within minutes and we were able to enjoy our dinner. Upon check in, we noticed that the hotel was under new management. We've stayed here before, but there was a new energy and modern flare. We were greeted right away and checked in within minutes. There was a coffee/tea and kombucha bar in the front, along with resources for entertainment and classes offered by the hotel, including 'ōlelo Hawai'i. As we walked through the halls to our room, we noticed new lighting, the modern decor, and well-manicured grounds. The room was clean, contemporary, and refreshing! Whoever took over management did a great job incorporating Hawaiian culture and education into the experience! Hulō!

Up until recently they allowed self parking across the street in another lot. Sorry, $30/day plus tax plus multiple tips/day and the loss of valuable vacation time standing in line waiting for valets to get the car is a non-starter. They have PLENTY of available parking space here, this is just a money grab. They also changed up the breakfast offering. Hilton offers an $18/day/guest benefit to purchase food, instead of setting up a continental breakfast. This used to work well when they setup in the lounge area with grab and go offerings reasonably priced, like spam musubi, pastries, fruits. But no more; now the only offerings are the vastly overpriced Ka Lihikai restaurant, and you cannot get breakfast there for anywhere near $18. The lovely morning coffee service that they used to have in the open air lobby has moved to a claustrophobic little meeting room. Art - sad to report that they're removed the ultra-classy Kim Taylor Reece B&W Hawaiian culture photos and replaced them with ordinary tourist-grade photos. Pillows huge and firm (not good) hard as rocks. You do get a minifridge, but no microwave. Lovely views of the working Hilo Bay, pool, and Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa.

The room was clean and had everything we needed. We booked a room facing the water and the coconut island which was a lovely view. You can hear through the wall quite loudly but if turning on the fan constantly helped drown out the noise at night. One is detached from the house and is rhe smallest. The larger room is located at the entry to the house. It appears that it is a converted living room with a 3/4 bathroom. No tub. The room is decorated nicely in island style and sconce lighting. Nice large flat screen tv on the wall with a swivel. A/c in the room if needed, cieling fans, and a couple nice couches. There is a refrgerator in the room that has a small freezer. There is a microwave on the lanai and a barbeque that can be used also. The breakfasts are outstanding and consist of papayas, mango, bananas, apples, dates and kiwi. In addition Steve makes waffles, and brings in bagels and sweet rolls on alternate days. Theres also, Coffee, yogurt and three types of dry cereal. The grounds are lush and well maintained. You have full access to the pool and hot tub. Theres also a koi pond. The lanai is about 35' x 35' big and really nice with many chairs to lounge on and chill... The only negatives i can think of is the water pressure in the shower is really low and the towels are pretty thin....these things are not deal breakers. Steve and Su are great hosts and we definitley reccomend the Orchid.

Easy walking distance to almost everything. Our room had a nice view of a park and we could see the ocean/bay, too. My only (minor) complaint involves checking in. There's no front desk so figuring out the code to your door can be a little challenging. I recommend calling well in advance to get any similar questions answered. The room was very clean and attractive. The mini-fridge was also most welcome. Terrific location and reasonably priced.

You do it online and you get to chose which room you want, granted it's available. You pay a one night deposit to hold your reservation. I emailed Neil to see if he could run the balance so that way the room was all paid up. No problem, he emailed me back letting me know that he could do it. After you've booked you receive an email with your confirmation number. DON'T DELETE THAT EMAIL!!! You'll need the last 4 digits to get into the main door AND your room door. There is no front desk and no one there to check you in or out ... or so we thought .. read on ... When we arrived in Hilo it was well past 6pm. What I didn't expect was for Neil to be there waiting for us. But there he was! He helped us get in and told us where we could find restaurants for dinner and told us about Pauls Place (which is directly below). He's really a nice guy! I was not prepared for how awesome the room would be. Honestly, if you can forgo all of the luxuries of a resort .. you will love it here. It is in downtown Hilo, a block from Hilo's Farmers Market, and close to literally everything. Our room that we had was room 5, which consisted of 2 queen size beds, private bathroom, a huge closet, flat screen tv, ceiling fan, a small fridge, a coffee maker, small dining table and a lounger chair .. oh did I mention we had an AC in there as well. Which, really wasn't needed since Hilo is always cool in weather at night. There's also free wifi if you need it. The room was clean and it was definitely quiet at night. I read a few reviews where they stated that the bathroom shower would leak out water when showering. Although our shower was huge and the ledge thingy on the bottom wasn't 'tall', we didn't get any water splashed outside ... maybe we were more careful? Idk, but if your not having some huge water fest in the shower there shouldn't be any water flooding your bathroom floor. The beds were comfortable and I honestly didn't want to get out of bed every morning. We never had any issues with noise in the morning. Pauls Cafe downstairs wasn't too loud. But, you know it's morning and all the noises start in the AM just like at home .. plus we were already out and about by 7am. Go figure ... Check out is at 10am, but if you need to extend the time just call Neil! I would most definitely stay here time and time again. It was really great to not stay in a big hotel and I felt very comfortable there. Recommend them? Heck yes!! Side note: We weren't able to try Paul's food while there :( So we plan to on our next trip there! 10/100 Challenge 2018

No ice machine, no internet, no TV, no place to set your luggage except the floor. The pictures must be old because when we got there it was more rundown. Stairs were sketchy and the place really needs some work all around. Unsure why anyone would give this place a 5 star review when I am giving it one star because you have to give something. Do not make a reservation unless you want to give your money away because they have it posted that if you have a complaint about this place built in 1911, it will not suffice to get a refund of your first day if you don't cancel 24 hours prior. We always bring our two dogs with us when we visit so we don't have to board them while we are gone. Their amazing breakfast is really a fine example of what a real B&B should serve. For this stay they had fresh fruits, eggs, potatoes, breads, yogurt, juices and coffee. Everything was prepared by Carolina who was our host. She was so accommodating and attentive.
