Location is amazing. Staff were very professional, friendly and awesome. They accommodated us to store our luggage's in a unit hours before check in. Definitely a place we will come back to

We stayed here for one night while spending 2 days on the Big Island. The cottage is a bit hard to find; we had to stop at another place to check our directions. Turns out we passed by it a few times already but weren't aware since we had expected the cottage to have a sign (it doesn't). The innkeepers were not there to greet us when we arrived which made things a little confusing. After parking our car in the shared driveway, we walked around back and surveyed the place. We located our rooms and the communal kitchen, which appeared quite dirty. Probably harmless, but I would not be comfortable cooking in that kitchen! Speaking of cooking, we did not get the family cooked breakfast everyone else seemed to get in other reviews. I feel like I totally missed out!! The rooms themselves are decent enough, with comfortable beds and free wifi. The bathrooms were mostly clean (dust and dirt in the corners) and fully stocked with all the usual necessities. We met the innkeepers on our way out after checking in, and they seemed friendly and recommended things to do, places to see. Overall, a good place to stay while in Hilo if you just want a comfortable place to sleep and are not expecting the Hilton, but not the easiest to find.

Oh my, where to start? Maybe I should start with the not-so-good to get those out of the way first. 1. The property is just a renovated house with carport driveway, and the sign is small so you are most likely to miss it. Sign is lighted after dark though, it is written on a turtle shaped short white post, refer to the picture I posted for better reference. Luckily it is located at a dead-end street so you know you are on the correct street. The house is right after the big sign for Arnott's Lodge when you come in on Keokea Loop, the very inconspicous house right after that sign is your destination. 2. Room is not very soundproof, the jalousie styled windows doesn't help either. So the frogs croaking away at night might be a big issue for light sleepers, so take that into consideration when you are booking. 3. If you are arriving after 8pm, you most likely won't be greeted by the owners for the check in process. There will be a printed welcoming letter taped to your room door, but you have to use flashlight or your cellphone to see it since the porch isn't lighted. All instructions will be on that paper, so check in is relatively hassle-free. The owners live right next door, so if you need them for anything they are nearby. 4. Driveway can park two cars, and it is on a first come first serve basis. So if you are the third party, you will have to park on the big grass yard at the front. Just watch out for the tree, and if it rained, watch out for muddy grass lawn. 5. I don't think there is room service, but you can also double check with the owners on that. Now that is done, let's talk about all the PROS! We reserved two nights for room #7. Island style decoration with lots of windows. Ceiling fan and air-conditioner available. We didn't use the AC but owner said it works fine, you just need to give it a bit time to work its magic and you'll have an air conditioned room. 1. Very homey and welcoming, amenities include: coffee maker, two mugs, a small fridge, a small dining table, TV, closet space. The bathroom has some cute decorations and in general it feels as if we are staying at a friend's place instead of booking a hotel room. 2. Wifi available, though signal is a bit slow, but it works and it is free. 3. Hairdryer available, body wash is provided, but no shampoo or conditioner. Huge stand-in shower with pedestals. Showerhead is actually the take-off type, so cleaning those hard to get places is much easier! 4. Back patio has chairs and a small table so you can enjoy the nice big back yard. Back patio leads to a separated room that is the kitchen, with working stove, stocked with pots and pans, dinnerware and such so you can cook some light meal if you desire. Just remember to clean the dishes well! It is a rainforest and insects are plenty. 5. Breakfast is provided at the kitchen in the back every morning starting from around 6am. The first day owner provided canadian bacon and home backed sweet bread rolls. Eggs were DIY. So we made scrambled eggs ourselves while another room made sunny-side ups. The second day owner said to make lives easier for us and so we don't have to wash any dishes, she made our breakfast and put it in to-go containers. Second day's breakfast had: half of a papaya, sliced strawberries and a lemon wedge, hash browns, scrambled eggs and sausage patties. Home-cooked meals that are both healthy and delicious! YUM! 6. The back yard is HUGE! So many fruit trees too! There are coffee, cacao, papaya, apple banana, pineapple, mandarin oranges and some other ones that I don't recognize. They also raise their own chickens, so the eggs we had for both mornings were fresh out of the pen! 7. They are located in a dead end street. At the end of the street to the left is a small access road that lead to a beach. Beach is closed after dark and opens at around 6-7am. So 2minutes walk from the cottage you can have a nice quiet beach with the view of the Hilo Bay. There are also several beach parks within walking (or driving if you so prefer) distance from the cottage, and they were all great spots for sunrise, turtle spotting, sunbathing or any other beach-related activities you do desire. 8. Pet owners rejoice, for this is a pet friendly facility! We've seen two parties with huge dogs on our second day here, so for people who love traveling with their furry family members, another place on your list! Friendly owners, great breakfast, homey welcoming rooms and great location, we've enjoyed this place so much that we are already planning on booking it again for our next visit.

They really make the hotel what it is. Room - we had a standard king room. Great views overlooking Hilo Bay. The room was very clean and comfortable, perhaps the only downside was I couldn't get the air conditioner down far enough because I like my room really cold. The in room coffee was actually pretty good, but you can get better coffee in the morning at the restaurant for free. They give us lots of towels. No complaints about the room.. Food and Drink - we were out and about the whole time so we didn't actually eat any meals at the hotel, but we did have drinks at the lobby bar. The drinks were good and stiff, and the bar had great views of the bay. It's a nice place to unwind after the day.. Parking - we chose self parking, it's cheaper than the valet service. However, the self parking lot is actually across the street from the hotel. It's not a far walk by any means, but the self parking lot itself is basically gravel and can be uneven in spots. At night that parking lot is somewhat poorly lit. If I'm someone who has mobility challenges or balance issues, I would not park there because I think a fall is a possibility. Location - back in the day, Banyan Drive was really a nice hotel district. There are many decent hotels which catered to a lot of local people. Over time many of the hotels there became rundown, and frankly the Grand Naniloa is probably the nicest property in the area. The area around hotel is by no means sketchy, it's quite safe to walk around at night. Ito has an underrated restaurant scene. Lots of good places to eat. Talk to the hotel staff they will tell you where to go. It's about 45 minutes to an hour to drive to the volcano. Closing Thoughts - the hotel is not perfect but it's still pretty good. Some parts of the hotel need some work. The elevators tend to be a little older, I think they could expand their food service options. They really should do something about the self parking lot at some point. Would I stay at there again? Definitely, I stay there because the staff is terrific, and the rooms are clean and comfortable, and if you're visiting Hilo, it's a fine location.

Well after years of me giving 5 star reviews here, recent management and structural changes here…read morehave soured the experience, and we likely wont be returning. #1 change is the forced $30/day Valet only parking. Up until recently they allowed self parking across the street in another lot. Sorry, $30/day plus tax plus multiple tips/day and the loss of valuable vacation time standing in line waiting for valets to get the car is a non-starter. They have PLENTY of available parking space here, this is just a money grab. They also changed up the breakfast offering. Hilton offers an $18/day/guest benefit to purchase food, instead of setting up a continental breakfast. This used to work well when they setup in the lounge area with grab and go offerings reasonably priced, like spam musubi, pastries, fruits. But no more; now the only offerings are the vastly overpriced Ka Lihikai restaurant, and you cannot get breakfast there for anywhere near $18. The lovely morning coffee service that they used to have in the open air lobby has moved to a claustrophobic little meeting room. Art - sad to report that they're removed the ultra-classy Kim Taylor Reece B&W Hawaiian culture photos and replaced them with ordinary tourist-grade photos. Pillows huge and firm (not good) hard as rocks. You do get a minifridge, but no microwave. Lovely views of the working Hilo Bay, pool, and Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa.

John is also one of those rare people you meet in the service industry that isn't just into making quaint small talk for the sake of it. He doesn't robotically recommend things everyone knows about. He really knows every nook and cranny of the island! Everyone else we told about our hiking trips on the island just met us with puzzled looks. John had done those hikes and had useful information to contribute about those hikes. Stuff you couldn't get with just a Google search. I LOVE competent and friendly people that know exactly what they are talking about! Everyone we interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely kind. A special shoutout to Charla at the front desk. She was professional, patient, and handled a difficult guest with grace while still making everyone else feel taken care of. Employees like her really make a difference. The location is beautiful. The ocean views are amazing, there's plenty of parking, and it's a nice area to walk around and enjoy the scenery. Our room's AC worked great, which was much appreciated after spending time outside. The hotel itself is clean but could use some updating. I think it would be nice to modernize certain areas while still preserving the Hawaiian history and charm that gives the property its character. There are also a few maintenance items that could use attention. For example, our towel rack was very loose and some bathroom finishes were showing wear. We also really enjoyed WSW | The Steakhouse. First off, the Lobby area is absolutely beautiful and parts of the Restaurant is still under construction. However, the rooms are dated.. extremely dated. We had three rooms for our Family, all on the 8th floor, and our room smelled of straight mildew as soon as we opened the door. Unfortunately we couldn't keep the door open to air it out as it was also extremely humid and there were swarms of termites on the balcony. The wallpaper was bubbling all over the walls, and the rug and chair fabric looked as if it were better to just toss. The minifridge was also busted.. it would freeze all our beverages that weren't placed in the freezer. Annoying but I'd rather it be frigid than warm. The bed was very comfortable and clean.. as well as the bathroom. No signs of rust or mold. No bugs were seen in the room. Front desk was flustered when we checked up, there were a lot of activities in Hilo town this past weekend so although they weren't overly friendly, they weren't rude. Parking is onsite but of course first come first serve. It's nice that they have a garage under as well but if you miss snagging a space, there's street parking. It was a great visit for us so we do recommend it if you get your room at a decent rate. The price felt fair overall, but I think many reviewers weighted the cleanliness and renovated…read morerustic aesthetic too heavily. Having stayed in 2-5 star hotels across the U.S., this property is a good example of how subjective hotel ratings can be. Hilo simply does not have the newer luxury resort inventory you find on the Kohala Coast, so don't assume another hotel is upscale because it has "Grand" in the name. I can understand the appeal of its boutique-style, active-traveler, eco-conscious, customer-friendly atmosphere, hence the skewed 5-star ratings. Our biggest disappointments were room size, cooling performance, and noise/poor acoustic privacy. I'd still give it a low 4 stars because of the location, cleanliness, Aloha atmosphere, and staff friendliness. The property offers very basic accommodations in what resembles an old Travelodge/Motel 6-type property but cleverly renovated. The owners clearly understood that with clean rooms, vinyl plank flooring, fresh paint, and updated furniture, and a hint of a Zen/Environmental/Aloha vibe, they could offer a strong alternative to Hilo's aging high-rise hotels. While there are wheelchair ramps, the property has three stories and no elevators which means you'll have to carry your luggage up the stairs for most the upper floors. Some rooms face the inlet/ocean across the street fronted by a very old looking fish pond, while most others look across to each other with a small garden areas between or the decent pool area (no hot tub.) There's free lobby coffee in a large pump dispenser since rooms lack coffee makers, plus complimentary bikes and paddleboards. A very small lagoon beach is directly across the street, with two decent restaurants within a stone's throw. Downtown Hilo is about a six-minute drive but probably not walkable for most people. Rooms are compact, and the bathrooms are tiny with no exhaust fan. The bed leaned softer than average, and the TV was smaller than most modern computer monitors. The A/C struggled with Hilo's humid climate but managed to keep the room barely cool enough for comfortable sleeping. Shower pressure and temperature were acceptable, though the showerhead sat around chin height for me at 5'11". The biggest drawback was noise and lack of sound privacy. The glass louver windows provide almost no sound insulation, so you hear everything outside your room -- kids running the halls, conversations, foot traffic, and nearby guests. Anyone outside your room could easily overhear conversations inside. There's also noticeable jet noise due to the airport proximity, though fortunately I don't recall hearing flights between 10:30 PM and 6:30 AM. Rates are typically less than the nearby aging high-rise hotels with more upscale branding (and more uneven reviews). If SCP is at least 20% cheaper than those competitors, it's probably the best value in Hilo. If it fits your budget, I would opt for the ocean view rooms with the balconies at the SCP. The hotel appeared to be finishing renovations on its last older rooms during our stay, so many of the older 1-2 star reviews are probably no longer relevant

Many of the individual rooms have no TV, microwave, ac/heat, mini fridge, or kettle/Keurig in the rooms. Fairly Spartan, but the rooms are clean, the staff is great, the bed is comfy, and there is a decent but limited hot breakfast included every morning. When we went there was a choice between egg scramble, breakfast panini, and French toast. There's also a communal area with a coffee machine and hot water kettle. Instant oatmeal, muffins, juice, and breakfast bar snacks are included. There's a fridge with bigger snacks and cold water for purchase. You're really here for the waterfall and the natural serenity. And both are wildly spectacular. The waterfall is huge, multi-tiered, strong even in the dry season and you can see it from the dining area and several of the rooms. Inn policy is to check in with the innkeeper to see if the water is safe to enter but even if you don't go in, it's relaxing to just read on the deck to the sounds of the waterfall. There's kayaks and standup paddle boards for rent. The water is cold even in June but it is quite refreshing to take a swim in. Do not drink the river water and avoid getting any in your mouth or eyes. For the outdoor enthusiasts, they offer repelling down the waterfall. The Inn does sell day passes to non-overnight guests but waterfall activities have a few morning hours exclusive to overnight guests. When we stayed, the Inn had low occupancy and it was nice having the morning waterfall all to ourselves to paddleboard and swim. There are two trails on the property that both lead to the waterfall. There's also a covered open air structure down river with seats to enjoy nature. Buddha statues are placed along the bamboo trail. Both trails are pretty easy and it's hard not to feel some sense of calm with this much lush jungle. Totally a place you can just peace out, write your novel, read, or just commune with nature. Parking is included in their shared lot. Coqui frogs are out of control and it can be quite loud. We didn't have problems sleeping but you may want to bring ear plugs. Bring bug spray for the mosquitos, slippers/flip flops or water shoes for the waterfall pool and hike. There's a communal box of supplies containing mostly sunscreen. The drive to and from the Inn is rather sketchy as it's through rural Hilo with no street lights, several blind turns on a 1.5 wide road with often very overgrown plants on both sides. Vehicles have to pull off into dirt or plants to let another vehicle pass. Do not recommend driving it late at night, especially when it is raining. There's also the main gate to the Inn and a main gate to the rural road right off from more urban Hilo that closes at night, but also can be opened with the same code you get from the Inn. If you're a nature lover and love waterfalls, you'll find this place absolutely enchanting. But if you're looking for a Waikiki style experience, you'll want to look elsewhere.

Chef Lisa is a culinary artist, as well as brilliant chef! We felt like we were lucky tasters on an episode of Master Chef. We all got to taste Hawaiian delicacies that few others on the mainland have ever tasted. Chef Lisa was super gracious, generous and modest. She taught us a great deal as she warmly explained each course table-side. Her love of food and Hawaiian culture translated into divinely delicious dishes. Breakfast was a bowl of fresh fruit - lichee, mango, papaya, kiwi, grapefruit, melon - along with juices, lemon-infused water, tea, and fresh-brewed coffee, followed by something more filling, like banana-macadamia pancakes, quiche, French toast, or scrambled eggs and bacon. But the best part of breakfast was the conversation - with our hosts Gay and Koa - who we had all to ourselves for three of our four mornings. We talked for 2+ hours every day about Hawaiian flora and fauna, music, arts, history, language, and culture. Gay danced the hula for us and Koa played his favorite Hawaiian songs for us. They showed us their workshop - where they teach how to make feather leis, woodwork, ceremonial masks adorned with coyote teeth, traditional weapons made with tiger shark teeth, and countless other Hawaiian artifacts. I can go on and on, but that still won't do justice to what our stay meant to our family, so I'll share photos of what our girls wrote in their guestbook. Thank you Gay, Koa, and Hilo Honu Inn for a lifetimes worth of special memories. We will be back to stay with you next time we visit Hawai'i.

One is detached from the house and is rhe smallest. The larger room is located at the entry to the house. It appears that it is a converted living room with a 3/4 bathroom. No tub. The room is decorated nicely in island style and sconce lighting. Nice large flat screen tv on the wall with a swivel. A/c in the room if needed, cieling fans, and a couple nice couches. There is a refrgerator in the room that has a small freezer. There is a microwave on the lanai and a barbeque that can be used also. The breakfasts are outstanding and consist of papayas, mango, bananas, apples, dates and kiwi. In addition Steve makes waffles, and brings in bagels and sweet rolls on alternate days. Theres also, Coffee, yogurt and three types of dry cereal. The grounds are lush and well maintained. You have full access to the pool and hot tub. Theres also a koi pond. The lanai is about 35' x 35' big and really nice with many chairs to lounge on and chill... The only negatives i can think of is the water pressure in the shower is really low and the towels are pretty thin....these things are not deal breakers. Steve and Su are great hosts and we definitley reccomend the Orchid.

Easy walking distance to almost everything. Our room had a nice view of a park and we could see the ocean/bay, too. My only (minor) complaint involves checking in. There's no front desk so figuring out the code to your door can be a little challenging. I recommend calling well in advance to get any similar questions answered. The room was very clean and attractive. The mini-fridge was also most welcome. Terrific location and reasonably priced.

I totally went off of Yelp reviews in choosing a place to stay while in Hilo…read more Okay, I also researched the place to make sure it was legit. As far as booking a room, its really easy. You do it online and you get to chose which room you want, granted it's available. You pay a one night deposit to hold your reservation. I emailed Neil to see if he could run the balance so that way the room was all paid up. No problem, he emailed me back letting me know that he could do it. After you've booked you receive an email with your confirmation number. DON'T DELETE THAT EMAIL!!! You'll need the last 4 digits to get into the main door AND your room door. There is no front desk and no one there to check you in or out ... or so we thought .. read on ... When we arrived in Hilo it was well past 6pm. What I didn't expect was for Neil to be there waiting for us. But there he was! He helped us get in and told us where we could find restaurants for dinner and told us about Pauls Place (which is directly below). He's really a nice guy! I was not prepared for how awesome the room would be. Honestly, if you can forgo all of the luxuries of a resort .. you will love it here. It is in downtown Hilo, a block from Hilo's Farmers Market, and close to literally everything. Our room that we had was room 5, which consisted of 2 queen size beds, private bathroom, a huge closet, flat screen tv, ceiling fan, a small fridge, a coffee maker, small dining table and a lounger chair .. oh did I mention we had an AC in there as well. Which, really wasn't needed since Hilo is always cool in weather at night. There's also free wifi if you need it. The room was clean and it was definitely quiet at night. I read a few reviews where they stated that the bathroom shower would leak out water when showering. Although our shower was huge and the ledge thingy on the bottom wasn't 'tall', we didn't get any water splashed outside ... maybe we were more careful? Idk, but if your not having some huge water fest in the shower there shouldn't be any water flooding your bathroom floor. The beds were comfortable and I honestly didn't want to get out of bed every morning. We never had any issues with noise in the morning. Pauls Cafe downstairs wasn't too loud. But, you know it's morning and all the noises start in the AM just like at home .. plus we were already out and about by 7am. Go figure ... Check out is at 10am, but if you need to extend the time just call Neil! I would most definitely stay here time and time again. It was really great to not stay in a big hotel and I felt very comfortable there. Recommend them? Heck yes!! Side note: We weren't able to try Paul's food while there :( So we plan to on our next trip there! 10/100 Challenge 2018

No ice machine, no internet, no TV, no place to set your luggage except the floor. The pictures must be old because when we got there it was more rundown. Stairs were sketchy and the place really needs some work all around. Unsure why anyone would give this place a 5 star review when I am giving it one star because you have to give something. Do not make a reservation unless you want to give your money away because they have it posted that if you have a complaint about this place built in 1911, it will not suffice to get a refund of your first day if you don't cancel 24 hours prior.
