First time coming to The Tavern and it didn't disappoint. Just to get into the building you get to walk up a charming cobble stone sidewalk that decorate the outside of the restaurant. Upon walking in you feel embraced by the tavern charm. We chose to eat outside because the weather permitted. They have a spacious patio equipped with an outdoor bar area as well. We ended up getting their Onion soup, stuffed salmon and a pan seared ribeye. read more

Wow this is the oldest Tavern in the state and the food they are pumping out is amazing. My folks found this place and raved about it so I said ok I'll try it out. Everything I order even the water was outstanding!! I wish I could have visited more often but they were closing for renovations and wouldn't open before my trip was over. I'm definitely going to plan a trip back and can't wait to see what renovations they've done. It's such an old place that the floors are uneven. If you have a chance to stop by make a reservation ahead of time and make sure you bring an appetite because you'll want to eat everything on the menu. read more

The tavern established in 1779 is a wonderful architectural historical place to eat. The food is amazing and our server was so prompt gracious and courteous. We were here because of a bereavement of a lost loved one so we had a rather large party. we were upstairs in a clothes room next to a door that led outside a couple of the guest in our party wanted to smoke a cigarette so they went outside, where there was no customers insight, and actually a place where employees smoked and put out their cigarettes we went to the very end of the deck and make sure that the smoke that we blew only went One Direction, and that was away from the building itself However, a waitress that worked here came and was very, very rude and discourteous to one of the guest who was smoking, and instead of politely asking her not to, she barked at her like she was a little child and made her feel very, very belittled. It was very unacceptable and service from a place such as the tavern totally out of Character. Aside from the food, which was excellent by the way, they need to work on educating their Service waiters and waitresses on how to be kind and approach guest in a very professional manner take this advice. read more

Definitely one of my top 10 best restaurant meals ever. Even the best restaurants can be "off" on one or two dishes, but not this night. Each dish and side dish realized its full potential. My wife and I went for our anniversary and started with drinks, no appetizers this trip. When my old fashioned came to the table, I had my doubts. There was a whole wedge of orange, two cherries and a bit too much ice for me. But the flavor was outstanding. Perhaps a flavored bitters? It was very tasty. Salads were basic, crunchy fresh, and my blue cheese dressing had generous chunks of blue cheese. My wife had a Caesar salad which she loved. We shared two entrees with Brussel sprouts and spaetzle for sides. If you don't like brussel sprouts, eat these anyway. The sauce and seasonings are perfect and creamy. The spaetzle was so tender and buttery, and covered with a mushroom gravy... That's German comfort food! Sea scallops au gratin... my wife said were the best scallops she's ever had, I agree. Large scallops creamy sauce and crispy bread crumb topping. The stuffed filet mignon had a great grilled beefy flavor, stuffed with shrimp, bacon, and cheese, with a marsala reduction. The prices are very reasonable for this caliber of food. The decor... Well, it's a late 1700's colonial tavern, how cool is that! We ate upstairs in a small quiet room with a fireplace and only one other couple. Service was great from the time I made the reservation until we left. Our server missed little things that we overheard from other tables - what kind of butter it was, describing the specials, and only listing two sides when there were actually more. We were stopping in Abingdon for a night, and so had to give this place a try! I was attracted to it because of its history and stellar reviews, and I have to say it did not disappoint. We ordered the smoked salmon appetizer, the stuffed filet mignon, and the rack of lamb. Every course was perfect - even the butter that went on the bread was phenomenal! It's a little pricey, but the portion sizes were huge and everything was done perfectly. The wine list was also impressive: I ordered the petite Syrah with my meal, and it was excellent. I took off one star because of the COVID protocols. The front of the restaurant had several parties waiting when we walked in, and felt very crowded. While there is a huge courtyard area, the patio they are using right now for the winter is totally enclosed, so negates the benefits of being outside. Our waiter (who overall was fantastic) asked if he could take off his mask when explaining the menu. This was very different for us from Charlottesville, where restaurants ask the patrons to also put their masks on when speaking with servers! We appreciated him asking though and everyone walking around the part of the restaurant we were sitting at were masked the whole time. read more

We had a very delicious meal along with a great variety of craft beers - local and international. I started with the Ferrucci special, which was a large portion of steak, with blue cheese and some delicious reduction. This was some of the best steak I've had in my life. We also had French onion soup, which was uniquely flavored and delicious. I want sure about the Swiss cheese on top, but it paid well with their seasoning. Are you sure the entry of jäger schnitzel, which was good, but overshadowed by our appetizer. I was too stuffed to eat dessert, but we took home a creme brulee. when I ate it a few hours later, it was still delicious. read more

We were seated upstairs and on a Tuesday evening we had the room to ourselves. Very mixed review from here; overall we felt very rushed. Some meals are meant to linger. By 6p the light through the window blinded several in our party. No one offered to accommodate us. For the wait staff: we don't care what other tables you have or where...please make the table feel like we're THE only guests you have. Never asked if we wanted another cocktail. We had dinner here the evening of 12/9. This is the oldest building in Abingdon and the history is fantastic. The menu has numerous, great dinner suggestions. I had the Weinerschnitzel, which was excellent. My wife had the filet and it was also excellent. As you can imagine, the place was slammed on a Saturday night. The service did not suffer from the number of customers. Chris Earp was our server and he was top notch. He could work at any restaurant I have had dinner in. Welcoming, had command of the menu, conversant and very attentive. I would recommend this restaurant based solely on Chris' performance but, the food is that good also. They were very busy, perhaps short staffed and we simply felt rushed by our waiter and maybe just due to how busy it was and we sat nearest to the door, so lots of foot traffic in and out. The food was good, not amazing, the prices were quite high for the quality of the experience. I want to encourage others to try it, as it is a very interesting place with an equally interesting story. Lots of history in this joint. We've been coming to the Tavern for YEARS for their wonderful German fare. The inside is as historic as it gets, and the outside is even more beautiful with the new patio. The waitstaff is friendly and courteous. I can't speak to the whole menu or if we hit the Tavern on a bad night, but my friend and I were very disappointed this last visit. We both had the Wiener schnitzel which is always tender and moist. This time It was pounded so thin you couldn't even see veal when you cut into it, and it was dry as a bone. We had dinner here the other night and it was very good and our waitress, Carly, was very sweet and attentive. However, the three young cute girls that greeted us and showed us to our seat had on clothing that looked like they just stepped off the school bus. Short shorts and T-shirts. Totally out of line with this historic restaurant. And on top of that one of the diners that came in and sat close to us actually had on flannel pajama bottoms as their attire. Why don't nice restaurants like this have somewhat of a dress code? Come on, pajama pants? Ball caps are bad enough but this is a little too much. My wife and I had Dinner at the Tavern and the food was outstanding, my wife had the stuffed Filet and it was very good, the flavors were great and the filet melted in your mouth, I decided to go with the Prime Rib and had it grilled and the texture and taste was amazing I believe the best part of our evening was the service and our waiter Avery He made was feel Special and I can complement him enough. We had such a wonderful evening that we returned our son who was in the area working and loved it. He ordered the Black &Blue Filet and he said it was the best he ever had. I've eaten at the Tavern several times and considered it a treat. I dined there tonight and it was such a disappointment. I appreciate all of the hurdles they are going through during Covid, but so are we, as customers to venture out. Tonight we went there and it was such a disappointing experience. Do not claim you can make a drink I ask for, serve it in the wrong glass with ice and expect me to like it. I ordered Jambalaya and it was not good. It was way too hot (I've had many versions of this dish, so I kinda know what is good ). And the crawfish that we're supposed to be I. The dish were brought to the table at least 15 minutes after it was served???? Glad to be out of there tonight and could not find the silver lining. read more

Can't believe I haven't ever reviewed this place because we have been coming for several years now. We generally come on a special occasions because it isn't the most expensive restaurant we have ever eaten at but it isn't close to cheap either. It is always a mixed bag on our meals and the wait staff. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable but for some reason we always end up with the "Why didn't we get staff that the table next to us did?" On this trip we felt like we got looked over or forgotten about for bigger tables. We would have definitely ordered a lot more drinks if they had checked in more often. As for the food on this trip...we ordered our normal items. For a starter we got the tomato, prosciutto, and mozzarella. I should have sent it back because the prosciutto had an odd taste. I don't know if it was bad or just a different brand. From now on we will probably skip the appetizer portion of the meal here because that is the only one that fit both of our tastes. The main portion of the meal was an one order of crab cakes and one stuffed fillet both with the sour cream and chive mashed potatoes as sides. The mashed potatoes were really dry and pasty. I wish I had stuck with my normal side of mixed vegetables. We ordered the two main items so that we could split the plates and get a surf and turf vibe. The crab cakes were a bit off from their normal glory. The only way I know how to describe it is that they had a "fishy" seafood taste. They were good but not great. The definite star of the meal was the stuffed fillet. I don't understand how they can get a fillet that tender and tasty. This was a definite middle of the road experience. I expect more from this place because of the price and longevity. I do like that they now try some different dishes, are constantly playing with the flavors of butter, and keep rotating drinks. read more
