Typically I would do as I said I would and give a restaurant a second chance, however that will not be happening here. Our friends recently went for dinner and, if you can believe it, received even worse food and service than we did. When they asked to speak with the manager one never came. They sent a follow up to the owner who then accused them of trying to get something out of them and said his food was perfect. He also said that if they can't afford to eat there they should not come there and that they do not know fine dining. Here is a little piece of advice from me - I know fine dining and this lackluster food and service is not it. Face the facts - repair your building, train your staff, hire a decent restaurant manager and work on your kitchen. read more

The Tavern turned out to be a wonderful place where the food is incredible and is equalled only by the ambiance of being located in the oldest building in town! The fillet medallions melt in your mouth and the drinks are perfect and strong!! The tomato mozzarella & prosciutto salad is seasoned perfectly, making an ordinary dish a surprise star of the nite! This business dates back to 1779, 343 years ago! The interior maintains much of it rustic charm, and the food and service are excellent. Everything we ordered was exquisite, including escargot and duck breasts. We were surprised to see the extensive menu included German dishes not often offered. Outdoor seating is available. Traveled 2 hours to meet a friend here for dinner. I had called a week in advance for reservations and was told that the only time available for that evening was 5:30 pm. Entrees are served with a salad and bread. The bread was chewy and warm and served with whipped butter. The salad itself was boring (mixed lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, grape tomatoes) but all the salad dressings there are homemade- the orange balsamic vinaigrette was very good . I ordered crab cakes for my entree which were bland without the remoulade sauce served with them. Now for the wine list... it was actually pathetic given the "upscale" price of the entrees $28-50 range. I chose a glass of red wine which was served in a white wine glass and chilled. I would choose another place in Abingdon if you're interested in fine dining. read more

This is an interesting restaurant, in a truly historic building. The building was created as a tavern in the 1700s and, despite several iterations as differing businesses and domiciles, is once again a tavern. It is suitably noisy, dimly lit and infused with several hundred years of service. The tables are comfortable, the service is quite good, the food is also quite good (and displays a certain Teutonic bent, courtesy, I imagine, of the German owner) and the prices are high. We both started with salads. They were wonderfully fresh and crisp. My wife ordered the trout, which she said was good. I had a different experience. Despite growing our own beef, I am currently on a vegetarian kick...so, I asked for the stuffed mushrooms, followed by the vegetarian pasta. I am new to all this, so I inquired as to the ingredients of vegetarian pasta. The waitress informed me it had pasta, vegetables and...Italian sausage. I was intrigued. Knowing a thing or three about beef, I am quite sure sausage is made from the very style of methane farting, poo machines that inhabit our farm. Perhaps those clever little Japanese buggers have invented some sort of tofu cow, a type of which I am unaware...so I asked. Nope...it's regular cow. So, how, I asked, is this vegetarian? Well, I was told, at The Tavern, 'vegetarian' means "no added stuff". HMMM...no added stuff like vegetables, spices, cream, Italian sausage or pasta...in my pasta? So, we took the shovel away from the waitress before she could dig the hole any deeper. And, it must be said she was otherwise a very good waitress. The pasta, complete with dead animal, was very nice but, if you are a committed veggo, The Tavern is not the place you should be visiting. Otherwise, for non-veggo normal types it is really a very good, though quite expensive, restaurant. read more

We celebrated my sister (Dee Dee)'s milestone birthday at the Tavern on Saturday, July 9, 2022. What a wonderful experience! Everything was exemplary! The food, the atmosphere and the service were top of the line and made for a very memorable celebration! We are all from out of town... Illinois, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. There were 10 in our party and we sat outside under the pergola with lights. It looked like something out of a magazine. Chris was our waiter and he did a superb job. He got into the spirit of our party and set the mood for an enjoyable evening. Chris was knowledgeable, efficient and the right mix of professional and friendly. Not easy to do with a large party. The food was delicious. Also, although we didn't order dessert, we were surprised with three selections from the dessert menu.. courtesy of The Tavern, Chris the waiter, and an incredibly sweet regular patron of The Tavern who sent over a dessert out of the goodness of her heart! It was magical!! We will definitely keep The Tavern on our radar, and hope to visit again. read more

If you are concerned about COVID this is not a good choice. The entire time our waiter served us he wore a very saggy mask that NEVER covered his nose. The manager should be more on top of ensuring safe public health practices. read more

This is a great restaurant with high quality food. I'm a filet snob and The Tavern filet is impressive. I had reservations last night, first time here, and made reservations for brunch before I left. Dinner was amazing. The stuffed filet with marsala sauce is wonderful. I tried spaetzle for the first time and it was good. The creme brûlée is wonderful, perfect consistency and great flavor. Served correctly at room temperature as well. My friends had the crab cakes and lamb chops and everyone's plate was cleaned! Brunch was great also. Filet for breakfast... yes! Waffles and French toast made with crepe brûlée mix satisfied the sweet tooth. Peach Belinis and mimosas too! Great place and I can't wait to come back! read more

This place was so phenomenal! The establishment is historical and extremely charming. The pricing is relatively HIGH, but I enjoyed my experience. The service was so-so(our server Emily was quite inattentive), but we were asked by a manager how our food was. The New York strip steak was T H I C C and delicious. It was the first time I didn't need A1 sauce in my 24 years. They have a honey chipotle orange sauce to dip the steak in and it was lifeeeee! Highly recommend for dates. I always like The Tavern not only for the food, but for the atmosphere of the 1779-era building. I asked for downstairs seating when I made reservations for 8 and our table was ready when we got there. Chris, our waiter, was excellent and made good recommendations about food and wine. I passed on my usual Martini or Manhattan in favor of a beer since I knew that I'd have German food. I had planned to have the wienerschnitzel, but opted for the jaegerschnitzel which was excellent. I had the potato soup instead of a salad. It was large and would have made a meal by itself. Oh, well, that way I was able to take some home for later. We were there on a Thursday night and I am a bit worried as the crowd seemed sparse. In past visits the place was always crowded no matter the night. In fact, in 2015, two of us couldn't even get reservations. I hope it'll be around for a long time. read more

Held a business dinner at the tavern and everything was top notch. The server was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and fun to interact with. The food was better than I remembered from my previous visits here (it has been at least four years). We had a large group and they put is in a private room, which was a nice touch. The appetizer sampler with shrimp, oysters Rockefeller, salmon on toast, and baked Brie looked like something out of a culinary magazine, and it somehow all tasted even better than it looked. My entree was the culver duck breasts, and I give that a 10/10. Most places skimp on duck portions, but not here. It was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth it was so tender. My wife had the stuffed filet and the one bite I had was killer. She thought it was delicious. We will definitely make a point to visit the Tavern more frequently! read more

Very disappointing. The building is in need of some extreme TLC. I would go as far as to say if this isn't done in the next few years the building would be most unsafe if not condemnable Our server forgot to bring out our appetizer and our round of dinner drinks, to accompany dinner. While visiting the town of Abingdon we heard that The Tavern was not to be missed. It was difficult to get a reserva, so be sure to call well in advance as they are very busy. Needle to say, we were not disappointed! The bread and butter was wonderful, kind of a sweet, honey butter on crusty french bread. The entrees come with a mixed green salad which were simple but fresh and the Orange Balsamic dressing was delicious. I had the Black and Bleu Medallions: two, four-ounce carefully selected, hand cut black angus beef medallions blackened in a cast iron skillet topped with bleu cheese crumbles and Port wine reduction with adorable little carrot balls swimming in the sauce. Oh my goodness! So good! The husband had Culver Duck Breasts: two, six-ounce tri-colored peppercorn encrusted duck breasts, served with a whiskey sauce and fingerling potatoes on a bed spinach. The Tavern is a very charming restaurant located in the heart of quaint, historic downtown Abingdon, VA. Being the oldest of Abingdon's historic buildings and one of the oldest west of the Blue Ridge, The Tavern was originally built in 1779. During it's more than 200 years of existence, it has served as a tavern, overnight inn, and even a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. You may sit on a bar stool or at a table that once graced notable guests such as Henry Clay, Louis Philippe (King of France), President Andrew Jackson, or Pierre Charles L'Enfant who was the principal architect of Washington, D.C. It is owned by Max Hermann and his lovely wife. Max served 20 years in the United States Air Force before retiring and relocating to Abingdon. Being a native German, you'll find several German brews on tap at the small, rustic bar that is just off to your right as you enter. On tap selections include Franziskaner, Spaten, and Warsteiner. However, when in Abingdon, do as the locals do and reach for a delicious pint from Wolf Hills Brewery which always has a seasonal brew on tap. You can't go wrong with the Troopers Alley IPA. If you arrive later in the evening, you may also run into a few of the players, hanging out after a show, from the local Barter Theatre. Apart from the rich history, the unique ambiance of The Tavern only adds to its charm. The juxtaposition of the old and new combine for a rather surreal experience as you gaze into the eyes of your lover or take in the view of historic downtown Abingdon from a table located upstairs. The low hanging ceilings and uneven doorways are subtle reminders of another place and time. Just don't get so lost in the moment and your surroundings that you forget to enjoy one of the many amazing dishes on the menu. I can personally vouch for the stuffed filet mignon. If you are looking for an especially romantic evening, ask for the "Love" table located upstairs. You'll have to experience it firsthand to learn why it is labeled as such. This was our 2nd visit to the Tavern. I had the trout dinner and it was very good and enough for two. My husband had the Jagerschnitzel and it was good also. Fresh bread and homemade butter was great. We also shared a lovely cream brûlée. Our waiter was very attentive. On the dessert menu there was a request made to include an extra $10 tip for final drinks for the crew. This seemed excessive to me. We prefer to leave a nice tip for our wait person and not an extra group tip. read more

I hate leaving negative reviews but I'd like to spare someone from a sad experience like ours. The staff and service was top-notch and ambiance was charming; however the painfully-overpriced food was nearly inedible. The Tavern' has the $$$ price-tag but the culinary aptitude of Applebee's. My friend's shrimp Po'boy sandwich ($25) had shrimp that had not been de-shelled or de-tailed; biting into the sandwich and it crunched like there were roaches in it and it had to be picked apart. Really? The margarita was from a cheap mix. (which I'm down for on a taco Tuesday for $5, but $15?) My entree was smothered with cheap gravy from a powder-packet to cover the taste of freezer burned pork loin. ($30) We each ordered an entree and one drink, and our total was $90. I don't mind spending $100 on a fine dining experience but this was not fine-dining. read more
