Out of the ashes of the Pizza Prince, comes Viva La Pizza! -- steps off the Manhattan Ave G at 186…read moreNassau. Open less than a year, the restaurant seems to have settled into its menu. They serve round pies with various toppings. A plain slice runs $4. The crust is well stretched, crispy, with little sign of a gum line. The pizza has solid structure but is likely a young dough, without much development of flavor. Normally that's more than okay if the sauce and the cheese can shoulder the flavor duties, but this is unfortunately where Viva La Pizza! falls short. Cheese is a decent quality -- grease is not an issue and the ratio with sauce is well balanced -- but there is minimal flavor or depth. In the mouth it feels right, but it doesn't deliver much beyond a full stomach. A couple spots to sit, including a seat at the window where the crowd across the street at the liquor store occasionally puts on a show, but this is more of a grab-a-slice-and-walk joint. Open until 3 a.m., long past some other nearby spots, it's clear who their demo is. Earlier in the evening, most locals are looking at options such as Russ' and Original Greenpoint as preferred, tastier choices. Final rating: 6.5/10 -- but with a definite path to improvement.

Most Italian food I feel like is not worth the price, but I think all the main dishes here are worth the price for a very decent portion. The short rib and chicken parm are very big. Short rib, lamb papardelle, and lasagna were the stand out dishes to me. I think appetizers were pretty standard, nothing special. EXCEPT-- the oyster mushrooms, sooo good I could eat the whole plate. The sauce for the mussels is really yummy and garlicky. The give you bread, as much as you ask for. The chicken parm isn't the most crispy but it was very tender and thin and generously filled with sauce and cheese. Carbonara was also pretty standard. The gnocchi texture was melt in your mouth and pillowy but the sauce was kind of weird, like very dill forward.

This restaurant sticks and focuses on the flavors without frills. Good portions as well for the price! Calamari: delicious and crispy. Branzino: Sooo goode, especially for the price (~$30). Truffle pasta: Creamy, delicious and pasta is cooked al dente. Pizzas: Good if you appreciate more doughy crust. Service is pretty quick and the waiters are good at giving recommendations. We had a larger reservation but there was ample seating for walk-ins as well. There is also a small bar/counter. If you're looking for a solid local italian spot, this is it.

I don't know if this is the same food truck that is making trips around Dumbo, but there was a…read morePonti Rossi truck in downtown Manhattan that I tried today and boy did that turn out to be a huge mistake. There was no wait so my food came out pretty quickly and the price was reasonable (about $10 for a pasta dish) and the guy behind the counter was nice, but those are the only positives. I ordered the orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage, and I can say with absolute certainty that this is the worst plate of Italian food I've ever had. The pasta was completely overcooked and all of the noodles were stuck together, the broccoli rabe was just frozen and reheated, unseasoned broccoli and the sausage resembled a mystery meat that I believe I was once served in school for hot lunch, terrible. As a sauce, there was a combination of oil and some kind of cream/Alfredo sauce that tasted like it came out of a jar. And to boot the food was barley warm by the time I got back to my office (it took a total of 3 minutes for me to get back to my desk). I don't normally rant on yelp like this or go out of my way to slam businesses, but this dish was so awful it felt necessary. I am hoping that maybe it was just this particular dish or that the cook is having an off day because generally the truck seems to get good reviews. Ultimately though this experience has really tainted my experience with this food truck so I won't be returning.
