If you are about quantity vs quality welcome to Mecca. If you are looking for anything close to resembling flavor - keep on moving. The "beef bulgogi" the supposed star of this show is literally a heaping pile cold,flaccid, flavorless, damp ( dare I say boiled?)meat served up like yesterday's trash on warm rice that you can't access due to the heaping pile. This place is very "eh". Essentially, their food is mostly dry and bland. It doesn't really compare to the other korean places in the DFW area. If you want korean food and have a car just drive to Carrollton to get some better food. I would only eat here if you're in desperate need of a quick korean bite. read more

You know, I hate giving hole in the wall places a bad review..but here it goes. The food is actually pretty darn good here, even the side dishes. I started going there at least once a week last year..they get a seal of approval from this fob fo sho. Some of their dishes taste a lot better than some places near H-mart/Royal. Plus, the young workers at the cash register are usually really sweet. They also give you a small discount if you pay in cash. So...why only 2 stars? The older ladies that work there are rude, especially one particular one...short, chubby, and short haired one with slanted eyes. I don't expect them to bend over backwards for me but they never acknowledged me even when I smile. I put up with it because I wanted to eat the food but I reached my limit around November. I was waiting at the counter for something and the lady straight up ignored me and asked the young girl at the cash register what I wanted in a very rude and annoyed tone. Uhm...I'm sorry, am I inconveniencing you by eating at your restaurant? Do you not see me standing in front of you? Why should I pay my money and feel awkward eating at your place? They also started being really stingy with the side dishes. The young girl who used to hook me up with more side dishes pretty generously at the front told me when I asked for the 3rd time (honest to God, she barely gave me any the first and second time, so the 3 servings added up to normal one serving size) she hesitated and told me that they only refill side dishes once, but she will give it to me this one time. I don't know if the old ladies said something to her but yeah....side dishes are supposed to be unlimited, it's in our culture. There are no signs stating this either. I understand how businesses try to make profit as much as possible and they don't want to give away too much "free" food, but I did not leave with a good feeling that day...and I have never gone back. This place was a delightful little surprise. After driving one hour thru traffic on I-35W to get to my sister's graduation, and sitting through it for another hour, my family and I just weren't ready for another long haul through rush hour traffic at 5pm on a Friday evening. My sister, the person of the hour (or day), wanted some Korean food and Yelp directed us to this neat little place, just .2 miles away from the UNT Stadium. It sits in a little itty bitty parking lot shared by a barber shop and gas station. My parents were totally confused but followed me out of the car and into the restaurant anyway. Czen is set up so that you go up to the counter, order your few and pay first, and then they bring your meal out on trays - kind of like a food court joint. In my case, I ordered for a table of 10, and they were very accomodating. The gal at the counter helped bring our food to the table and followed up with us on refills of rice. When you're done with your meal, you have to return your tray and empty plates to a cart, but she was cool and let us leave everything on the table. Absolutely wonderful service. The quality of the food matched the level of service we received. Everything was delicious. My parents never ate Korean before so I ordered a conglomerate of dishes to share: kalbi, mackerel, croaker, spicy tofu soup, dumplings and jabchae. Along with all the side dishes, there was plenty of food and everyone was content, including the picky kids at the table. The students and staff have a gem right within the school grounds and I'm jealous. read more

I'm a newcomer to Denton, and happened to see this little gem tuckered in between a gas station and a dorm at the UNT campus. I'd passed by it many times, but it's "interesting" location and homely exterior kept me at bay until I finally looked it up on Yelp and found good reviews! And I was not let down! The first day I went inside, I noticed very basic decor and accommodations -- but clean, and somehow, made you feel comfortable... Like you were in someone's home. You order from a counter and pay immediately, and when your food is ready, they will call out your order or deliver it to your table. The food was pretty darn tasty! The food was hot, savory and filling. I often find places that sell the exact same quality food, but for much higher prices! Plus the girl behind the counter was very helpful and SO so sweet! After my first day there, I came right back the second day! The girl recognized me and gave me a knowing smile... She knew I was hooked. Of course, this isn't the best Korean I've ever had, but it's still quite good for what you're paying -- no complaints here! Overall, great Korean food at a convenient price without having to drive out to Carrollton/Hmart for your fix. read more

After having really awesome Korean fusion up in Minneapolis last month, I was thinking of making some kalbi. This meant a trip to the Super H Mart was in order, but it's Saturday, and I just didn't have the energy to deal with parking, crowd, the drive. Perfect time to try the new Korean place. We really enjoyed what we got. The kids ate the dumplings and egg rolls. They tried the japchae, but I think it had too many veggies for them. (Good for our lunch tomorrow, though.) My husband's short ribs were nice and tender. A little more onion would have been nice, since the ones on the plate were really good. (I stole two pieces and almost had an Oliver Twist moment.) The sizzling bibimbap was great. Within minutes of coming to the table in a hot pot, the rice on the bottom was wonderfully crispy. The egg was fried, so if you like the poached egg, make sure you clarify that. They served us 7 types of banchan with the various dishes and all were good. I especially liked the pajori and kelp noodles. I agree that the kimchi was spicy, but not to the extent that I didn't eat it...I just mixed it in with a little rice. The dumplings were good; the egg rolls were standard. Totally killed my diet, but it was worth going off the wagon for. We're excited to go back...not sure if I'll try something new or not, given how good these things were. I'll probably try to get my husband to order the bulgogi, just so that I can try that. read more

Everyone has different tastes, but I don't get the hype for this place. I ordered their Eagle bugolgi box. It technically came with three sides, but the portion sizes for these were very small. We're talking three tiny broccoli florets for one of them. Admittedly, there WAS a lot of bugolgi and rice. The bugolgi was made from very low-quality meat, though. It was at least half fat. I think I chomped down on some cartilage at one point. read more

I've been to Czen a couple of times now. It's great Korean... for Denton. I live in downtown Dallas and I still think the Asian Trade District at Royal is where the best Korean places are (Koryo Kalbi, I don't care how many times you rename yourselves, you complete me). Trust me, I'm always willing to try a new Korean place, so finding Czen was a treat since I come up to Denton quite a bit now. The first time my friend and I shared kalbi, dolsot bimbimbap & some dumplings. The kalbi was flavorful if perhaps a touch on the sweet side. I would have preferred a leaner cut, this meat was rather fatty. I do know that we Koreans love our fat, so this may have been more homestyle than I had anticipated. I doubt I'll order it from Czen again. The dolsot satisfied my "bowl of savory stuff" cravings and created a properly crunchy rice crust, yum! It's super hard to screw up dolsot bimbimbap because every place serves it slightly differently. I'd definitely order this again. The dumplings were good, but definitely not great. I'm not sure what it was but they just seemed a bit bland--not bad, just not memorable. The second time we ordered fishcake soup, pork cutlet, and kimchi pancake. Whoa, way too much food! We had no idea the fishcake soup would come out meal-sized since it's listed as an appetizer and not with the other soups. The fishcake soup was yummy, the broth was light and I'm like a crack addict for fishcake, so it really hit the spot. The kimchi pancake was tasty. The pork cutlet was only so-so-- tad on the dry side and again, the sauce seemed too sweet. The counter service is very sweet and friendly. I will echo everyone else's complaints about the water cups--why must they be so tiny? Also, the banchan, which is the deal breaker for some people when it comes to Korean places, is rather mediocre. The kimchi was very meh--not spicy, which is like blasphemy! I don't think we even got banchan the second time and we only got 3 kinds the first time. Monday, June 18th, 2012 (We went at noon, lunchtime) I wanted to try something new so I suggested this place to my supervisor (Who had never experienced Korean food before). They are a new place and I suggest that you give them a try. Overall our experience was enjoyable, rather pleasant and humbling. SERVICE: Upon entering Czen, you can find your own seat. There are no waiters so you have to go up to the counter to order your food. They accept credit card but if you pay with cash, they offer a 5% discount on your order. So bottom line, bring cash. They don't have any paper menus yet so you'll have to look at the chalk board near the counter. The silverware and the plates are authentic in Korean cuisine (Metal Chopsticks). One of the workers there told us that they are still working on the menu and hopefully they will be able to provide smaller portions at a lower price (Probably a Lunch Special.) Overall the staff was friendly and nice and they are more than willing (and knowledgeable) to help you if you have any questions about the menu. The food took a good amount of time to get to us (Not too long where you are waiting forever and not too short to think that it was premade and microwaved). FOOD: If you are concerned about MSG, don't worry it is not in their food. They noted that all their broths (Chicken, Beef, or fish?) are homemade with the bones of the animals. They also informed us that they buy their vegetables locally from the farmers market. They seem to try hard at being a "Down to earth" eatery. I ordered the R4 Mapa Tofu (Mapo Tofu?), I've had it before and I wanted to see how this compared with it. The order came with four sides and a bowl of miso soup (Since they give you all these sides it doesn't hurt to try them). If you want more of a side you can request it and they will give it to you (No extra charge). The Kimchi was pretty good but if you are sensitive to spicy food, it is spicy. The miso soup was a miss for us; at best it was luke warm. I feel it could have used chunks of tofu in it and served at a hotter temperature. As for the Mapa Tofu it is made with pork and the tofu is served in bite size pieces. The dish doesn't hit your mouth and explode with flavor but it will play in the background with a layer of spice (if you can see what I mean.) My supervisor ordered the Bimbibap. Let me tell you that it was pretty exciting when it came out. It crackled like a plate of fajitas and the presentation was great. I didn't try I but my supervisor (Who never had Korean before) said that it had good flavor. It also had an over easy egg on top (which I absolutely love!) VERDICT? Czen is still growing and evolving. They are eager for customers to come to their door and they seem more than open to accept any suggestions that you may have. I say give them a chance! read more

There are fewer and fewer "hole in the wall" restaurants left in Denton as excellent as this one. Don't be nervous about the location- in a strip with a gas station and a hair salon on the edge of UNT campus. I'm not Korean so I have no idea how authentic the food is but it's delicious and they always provide a more than generous portion at a very affordable price. The owners are friendly, and they have reserved parking which is a lifesaver that close to campus. I hgihly recommend popping in here on a cold day in the winter and grabbing a bowl of ramen. read more

I love this place. I never ate at the old Bulgogi House that used to be here, because when I finally got around to trying it, they had closed and been replaced by Czen. I decided to give it a try, and was delighted by the Spicy Pork Bulgogi. This was my introduction to traditional Korean cuisine, and I really fell for the flavors as well as the presentation - I adore the side dishes! The experience was enhanced further by the decor and atmosphere of the, admittedly small, dining area. I'm not familiar with very much of the menu - really just bulgogi and ramen - but everything I've had is great. The "lunchbox" serving of certain meals is a great deal, too. I usually order the regular dinner portion, and get at least one-and-a-half meals out of it. If you pay with cash, there's a small discount on your check, which is pretty cool. Czen serves tasty food that, at least to this Korean-neophyte, is exciting and makes me want to try more! I love bringing friends here. I got a sizzling hot pot bibimbap to-go from here and was pleasantly surprised. The tofu was nice and firm and the flavor of rice and sauce was very good. The fried egg on top was a bit overdone but I did get my food to go and didn't eat it till about 30 mins later, so part of the fault could have been mind. Food was pretty good. Close to UNT. I walked with my boyfriend and it took us about 5 minutes. Service was pretty slow tho. It took quite awhile for the food to come out. This time I wasn't bothered by it because we were all chatting and meeting new friends. But I noticed a lot of other customers continuously looking around and waiting for their food. The young man at the counter also seemed pretty flustered and in a hurry. Now for the food, I had the bibimbap which was pretty good. Fried egg was a bit oily.Tried my boyfriend's ramen, also not bad. A bit spicy for him but he kept chowing down. Also ordered the pan fried dumplings. Which had a nice crunch. The menu here has changed since the last time I went, it now appears they have begun serving sushi. The food was excellent, though the menu has been given a trim and my beloved bibimbap only comes in beef or tofu versions now. My husband ordered his usual bulgogi bento. Czen is the only Korean place you'll find in Denton, and it shows. It's tucked in the corner of a gas station parking lot just off the edge of the UNT campus and would be packed out by 30 people. Most recently I ordered the sunduboo jigae for dinner. I had a conversation with the lady how I wanted it extra spicy - specifically, so spicy that I would cry. What I was served was the mildest I've ever had. A generous dash of sriracha made it palatable but still not what I hoped for. It's just as well that it wasn't at all spicy, though - the only water cups are tiny! They also offered only four different banchan with dinner. The kimchi was very good (though also not spicy), but I was disappointed by the rest. No odang, bean sprouts, mook, or anchovy - any one of those would have satisfied. I wouldn't accuse it of being good Korean food, but it's Korean, and the best you're going to get in Denton. When you've got the cravings and can't drive to 635 & Royal or Plano, Czen will take the edge off. read more

I was informed that extra rice and any sides were unlimited and free and i took full advantage of that. She told me that they were from scratch as can be but, some of the ingredients were simply unavailable in a reasonable distance. Was here earlier today for lunch. The last time I came here they were on point with everything but since then it has only gone down hill. The side were poorly seasoned, especially the kimchi, the other side consisted of pickled beets I think, which I had no issue with but the last side was chopped Vienna sausage in red pepper...really disappointing. The miso soup lacked both portion size and flavor, being really watery. The main dish I ordered was the pork cutlet, which tasted dry and had very little flavor besides a small amount of American BBQ sauce they provided on the side. Staff was nice and the place was clean, but I come to restaurants to eat not look around. So I'll come back in a couple months and hope that by then they will have fixed these issues. read more

A great asset for the UNT crowd. Attached to a gas station and next to West Hall, it is a little tough to notice if you weren't really looking or knew of it prior. The food though..excellent. I no longer have to drive all the way to Carrollton for Good Korean food. I had the grilled mackerel and it was seasoned and cooked to perfection. My 7 year old had bulgogi and loved it. Her meal also came with miso soup which she raced about. All meals (I believe) come with a side of rice and all of the kimchi trimmings. Prices very good; my meal was 8.99 which is extremely good for Korean food considering I spend 15 easy on one meal in Carrolton. There is a great variety to choose from. Space is small, but you can get it to-go if needed. My new go-to for fresh, well-seasoned Korean food. read more

Absolutely love this place. All of the staff are friendly and the owner always remembers me and makes conversation with me. The food is great, it tastes just like traditional Korean food and you get a lot. The prices might seem expensive but since it comes with so much food, it's well worth it.
