I have been here twice and it's decent. The food tasted good, the server are very kind, but I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars for a few reasons. 1) the sashimi is very thick cut. I appreciate getting a sizable piece of fish but the thickness has me questioning the chefs technique abilities. 2) the portion sizes are underwhelming. Some of the rolls are a good size, some are small. One dish we ordered was a small portion of food on a large plate that had a dried green herb sprinkled around the edge of the plate. It wasn't very appealing but it did taste good. 3) one of the sushi rolls I order unfortunately did not look the image on the menu. Sushi tasted great! Happy with what we ordered. I was disappointed when it came out covered with a sauce that looks like strawberry jelly. We asked the server what that was since it wasn't included on the menu and she said it was teriyaki sauce? Seems strange to me, never had this from a sushi place before. We sat down and the staff was quick to help us. We ordered appetizers and took a look at the menu. The wait staff brought us some Miso soup and our drinks. Shortly after she brought us our Gyoza - 5 pcs deep fried dumplings with Dipping Sauce. They were crispy and flavorful. I have eaten at a lot of Sushi restaurants and this rates one of the lowest. Nothing special about the atmosphere. The sushi was ok but nothing special at all. We had the California roll and the Volcano Roll. I've had lots of different Volcano Rolls and this was the worst. It had tons of chopped onions(which I DONT like). I am extremely confused about the reviews on this place. I don't feel like I'm super bougie about food, but this sushi was just not good. We were in Denton for the day and decided to try it out based on reviews. First glance isn't super reassuring the restaurant itself is really old and gives a fast food vibe. Either way we decided to give it a chance anyway. The service was amazing, we were given a free miso soup. It was ok. Then we ordered the gyoza. Normally gyoza is pan fried and there was no description to state otherwise, yet when we got it , it was deep fried. Not a huge deal, it didn't taste awful but it was very greasy and I probably wouldn't have ordered it if I had known. It almost had a panko batter around it. Secondly most of the rolls are fried, and I ordered the sunrise roll and it literally had nothing in the inside except a small piece of tempura shrimp and crab meat on top. The sauce they put on top was almost like a sweet and sour? Nothing like the picture- and the roll itself was tasteless and underwhelming. My husband ordered the Hiroshima roll based on reviews and it was deep fried, but it was so large and bulky it was hard to eat and the flavors just weren't there. Neither of us ate more than a couple pieces of our roll. I hate writing bad reviews but the excitement we had for this place based on the reviews vs the experience we actually had just really bummed us out. Tldr - management is demeaning and creates unsafe, hostile working environment for the employees and customers alike. food is mediocre and obviously reheated and the "sushi" is westernized. There's no reason to even consider this place for your next meal. Today, the owners verbally berated the server in front of all the customers and staff, called the server a whore for wearing makeup and continued to verbally harass them, making everyone in the restaurant so uncomfortable! It was incredibly shocking. It is so unprofessional to make harsh personal comments about your employees appearance, let alone in front of all your patrons! How unexpected. The unfortunate server had to run out the back door crying while the manager lady yelled at them. This is a server who I have seen there for years and they have always taken good care of folks and always gets them squared away, so it was nauseating and appalling to see the management treat their long-time workers and staff in such a demeaning manner. Management letting it fly in front of a restaurant full of customers, especially in such a small dining room of maybe 8-10 tables, is just unfathomable, you can only imagine how they speak to their staff when the customers are not looking. The food was mediocre anyway, the friendly staff is a big reason why people come here so, I hope the bosses know they are running their own business into the ground by alienating their staff and humiliating them in front of customers. I have noticed the place seems to have a high turnover rate over the years as there's always new faces and hiring signs... the bosses are apparently pretty well-known for turning customers away and regularly giving people a hard time, according to these reviews at least... The place is great if you love cream cheese, pre-frozen and then reheated in the microwave entrees, and fried "sushi" if you can really call it that... the real reasons to go were for community and supporting local businesses, so now that has been squandered, we will be taking our business to the place conveniently right across the street. Picked up a 20-piece sushi plate and shrimp/vegetable tempura dinner for my son's birthday dinner. While the sushi was ok, the tempura was just awful. The only decent "tempura" was the onion ring; the shrimp was just breaded shrimp and not prepared in a tempura batter at all. The tempura dipping sauce was just SALT which made bad fried food even worse. Miso soup was missing from the order, but honestly probably wouldn't have tried it after the rest of this dreadful meal. Will be looking for a new sushi place in Denton. I don't know if this place is under new management, but it sure didn't taste good like the last time we were here several months ago. The tempura is by far the best of any sushi joint I have tried. My orders have been accurate and well packaged. Someone at work recommended I try this place. So I dragged my husband to go try it out. When you're on the university driving east you may have to slow down cause it's slightly tucked behind some trees. But if you miss it it's an easy turn around. We walked in and were told to sit anywhere we wanted to. As we were waiting for our server to come, which wasn't long at all, we were able to admire all of the neat decorations. Our server got our drink and appetizer order and gave us time to really explore the menu. We ordered gyoza and started with waters. They were so fresh and had such good flavor, they even have some sesame dipping sauce that came with it, a-m-a-z-i-n-g!! As soon as she brought it out we were ready to order so I ordered the sashimi bento box and my husband ordered the California Roll Lunch Special. It's a good spot for sushi in Denton! They are fast with the orders and we usually get ours Togo within 10 minutes. I love their chicken fried rice! It's really flavorful and big portion. Small little sushi place with great food! We stopped in for a quick lunch on a weekday afternoon. Service is fantastic, the waitress was very attentive. Lots of options for different rolls, but you have to put everyone's order on one card, so make sure you all agree before putting your number down if you plan on getting more than one of the same thing. Someone else in our party got one of the lunch boxes, which had a really good amount of food - she wound up sharing with the rest of us, so be aware before you order too much if you're not into that heavy of a meal. The rolls are good sized, about the standard for other sushi places I've been to. Soup seems to rotate through every day, but the miso soup that afternoon was good. This was also my first time eating gyoza, which I do highly recommend. The place is quaint and a little crowded but everybody was extremely friendly; loved that the whole staff greets you as you walk in. Before we even ordered food, the waitress brought out our drinks and some miso soup, score!! After scouring the lunch menu we decided on the sushi bento, the sashimi bento, the teriyaki beef, and chicken udon soup. The food came out in about 15 minutes and was fabulous!!!!
