Went in last night at 7:45 PM with my wife for dinner. Asked for 2 seats, together at the bar and took our place. 15 minutes later we walked out. Not even a "sorry were busy but will be right with you". Not even an acknowledgement that there were even two new customers sitting there. A group of two couples arrive about at the bar about 10 minutes after we sat down and were acknowledged and served promptly. Not a good experience at all. read more

It is rare for me to leave reviews on restaurants but after the experience we had here today I just have to let people know how I'm feeling. We frequent the Stiles Switch BBQ joint on north Lamar but living in south Austin it can be quite a trek. We decided to try the new location despite the reviews we read. We should have listened and went out to the original place. I ordered a 2 meat plate with ribs, boudain, potato salad, beans and a sweet tea after the cashier said what bbq joint DOESNT have sweet tea. I should've known when we got the sweet tea that was really just plain black tea with no sugar it was going down hill. After that we got complimentary hush puppies and those were actually really good. About 10 mins later our food came out. I started with the boudain that looked amazing but was mushy and tasted terrible. I was a bit taken a back but you know what that's not usually what I get at the original location so I moved on. The ribs which I have faithfully gotten every time I've been to Stiles Switch on Lamar were terrible. They were unseasoned, tough and looked like they had been sitting out for some time. I was really disappointed in this. I figured okay maybe it's just this one rib but nope it was so bad I couldn't finish the second one. Lastly, the sides, which I was hoping could be the anchor to this meal were so bland I had to check if we were at the right place.Then to top it off they have this weird system were you pay when you order but sign the bill after you've ate I'm assuming to tip the waiters. Dude made 3 authorizations on my card and then had to ask for another one and still messed it up. To say I was annoyed when I left this place wouldn't even suffice. I guess my expectations were too high, I was expecting consistency even with the switch being a new take on BBQ. With all that being said, we will NOT be back to this location and I don't think i tou should waste your time. read more

We've given this place 2 tries and have been disappointed each time. Boudin is WAY to spicy and their "Cajun" food is over seasoned. Everything is over salted. We will go to Salt Lick for bbq that is consistent and delicious. The only reason I gave 2 stars is that their staff was great! read more

Beautiful new restaurant with some of the best BBQ in Austin (which is saying something)! The brisket, chicken, and mild sausage are killer. Wow! Wow!! Hot and new doesn't do it justice. Hot- yes! New: Yes, unique, and the Bomb!!! We went there for brunch. Yes, brunch- and what did we get? The best bbq besides Stiles Switch in Austin, however this location is completely different. We had excellent bbq brisket, ribs, breakfast, and desserts. The sides and the dessert are soooo unique and delicious. Who thinks this up??? If I lived in this area, I'd go every week. Seriously, every week to try each and every item. At our table of nine, we each got different meals and tried each other's food. I can't believe this place. Thankful for good bbq and food once again from the Switch. Definitely make this a destination point. The guys in our group are BBQ enthusiasts and have gone all over TX. We all voted five star bbq and unique spot to revisit over and over when we visit! What a great dining experience! My boyfriend and I were blown away by the high quality of meat, the creative use of Texas BBQ and Cajun influence on the dishes, and ohhh the banana split and cocktails made us want to stay all night. If you like really spicey food and really salty food, this is the place. My husband usually adds salt to all his food. He simply could not eat this.The flavor was delicious and the ribs meatly and juicy, but potato salad, ribs, brisket and cabbage just too salty for his taste. Came in after church and had a wonderful meal on Sunday. Favorite side was the corn casserole. The server dropped off a sample of pulled pork that was so delicious that we ordered it. Three meats and two sides were perfect for two adults and two kids. Waitstaff couldn't have been nicer. They have high chairs and booster seats. Interiors are cool. Really enjoyed the meal. I ordered the gumbo, it was very salty it had no vegetables in it or rice. It came with crackers they were tasty but way too salty. My husband wanted a slice brisket sandwich and they don't offer one,so he had to make one by ordering sliced beef and bread. My wife and I went there for lunch a couple of days ago. We were not impressed with the food. The brisket was very dry with very little flavor in our opinion. BBQ sauce wasn't like what I think a Texas BBQ sauce should taste like. Grits were very bland. I love grits and eat them often, albeit most of the time in GA or TN where they know what grits are supposed to taste like. I liked the potato salad but my wife likes Salt Lick's potato salad and was not impressed with the version served here. We didn't feel that it was too pricey...our lunch, including a beer was less than $40, including a tip. But, come to think of it, $40 for a meal that didn't impress IS too pricey. However, we did like the ambiance. Nice building with a great location. Well, we've tried it. And...sadly...we probably won't be going back. read more

Last night was our second time to dine at The Switch and we actually chose it over the Salt Lick, which we also love which is saying a lot! Honestly, we have been pleasantly surprised with the food, service and atmosphere there. The restaurant has a great feel and a very appealing, simple design aesthetic. The complimentary hush puppies are such a nice treat and the food really delivers. Our aunt visiting from Holland was astounded by the size of her smoked chicken piquant...she even took a photo to show her family back home! It was super fun when the owner, Shane Stiles, came over to ask us how our meal/experience was so far. He even offered to give us a Pit Tour, which we would love to do on our next visit. I have ordered the two meats BBQ plate both times, which is really too much to eat in one meal, but I love having left overs for later. My picks for the sides are the potato salad, jalapeno cheddar cheese grits and sweet corn casserole. My husband had the frito pie and said it was very tasty and would order it again. The food here is great! However, we went on a Friday night and overall it didn't seem well run. It took longer than they said to be seated, so I went to ask the hostess where we were on the list... she had said it would be 20 mins and it was about 35. She was very apologetic and they seated us right away. Then it literally took forever for my wife's drink to come... long after mine. The main reason we went was for their amazing smoked turkey... but for the second time in a row they had run out of it! After we placed our order once again it took forever to come out. Our waiter was very apologetic but it was frustrating. Then they brought mine and my wife's food, but my daughter 's didn't come for quite a while. The waiter came and apologized and told us they didn't have a clean bowl for her gumbo... and it still took quite a while after that. The food was great, but overall the experience wasn't great. We will try it again, and hopefully management has the place humming along better next time. read more

Okay, so I must note that once I got my food it was actually very noteworthy, but first there are many things that need to be addressed. From least serious to most pressing, first of all, the seating/ordering method is confused. There are 2 employees standing up front waiting for customers and they hand you a menu and assign a table, like a good ol sit down restaurant, but you order from a cashier like a fast food joint. Then you have a server, but she is just there to get you refills and such. It seems like a good idea, but doesn't really work for the slower days where there are usually 3 people just standing around doing nothing. So from the start, a nice woman up front gives you a menu, then a separate employee attaches a sticky note to your menu with a table number, only to be taken off by the cashier 2 yards from where they put it on, then if you dont know what you want, you gotta stand around in the way of people in a narrow walkway to look through the food. This brings me to the menu, which was pretty ambitious and VERY overpriced. They need to have simpler menu items for those who just want to order a plate, not just ala carte, per lb prices for meat and then some sandwiches. We payed (after the tip) $50 for lunch for 2! That's outrageous! The food was good, but we didn't order caviar or truffles with it! Now here's the biggest problem- I ordered the Po Boy. I did so because I wanted a pulled pork sandwich, but there wasn't one. So I just decided to get this sandwich, but without shrimp on it (naturally it was expensive because of the shrimp included). Now, me and my dad are both allergic to shrimp, so we made it very clear to not include shrimp. We got the sandwich, actually very quickly, but to no avail, because right there in plain sight was a fried shrimp. My dad brought it back and told them it could've been very dangerous to serve that. One of our servers was very helpful and made sure they fixed the mistake. Someone else came over and gauged the situation, but instead of being nothing but 100% responsible and receptive, started getting defensive; yet another server came over and just brushed us off even though we were understandably frustrated. That's not our problem that the shrimp came out on a sandwich after multiple attempts to let them know the consequences. The first server maintained a helpful and friendly vibe with nothing but respect and attentiveness. Despite her best efforts, it may take some convincing to return again after those events. Note! The sandwich and corn casserole were very good, but at what cost? TL;DR: the food was good, but at the cost of a confused layout, an incorrect order which could've led to serious illness, and some impolite staff (not all, some). Maybe you'll have a better time than we did. read more

We live close to The Switch and would like to eat there more often. Unfortunately, once again, we were disappointed in the food and the service. There were three small pieces of meat on the frito pie and a few fatty pieces of brisket in the gumbo. It seems like they're trying to save money by skimping on the amount of food they serve. The waitress acted like she was in a rush to move us out even though there were few people dining on a Friday night. Unless they change the way they're doing business, The Switch will poorly manage themselves out of business. read more

Went here with high expectations on the third day that they were open. The hostess was friendly, and as this was our first time to a Switch, she explained how it worked. We had a little bit of a wait in line, not because the line was very long, but because there was only one person taking orders. My husband ordered a combo with beef brisket, ribs and sausage with cole slaw and gumbo covered potato salad. I ordered pulled pork with a side of dirty rice. We both had root beers. Our server was very friendly and helpful. First she replaced my root beer because it didn't taste very good. Never having that brand of root beer, I wasn't sure whether it was the brand or that it didn't have enough syrup. When our dinner came, she brought us plates and silverware when we asked. I liked the dirty rice and thought that the potato salad was okay. The cole slaw was awful. My husband did not like either the potato salad or the dirty rice. The beef brisket was excellent, possibly the best that I have had. After eating the beef brisket, we realized we were missing the ribs. Our server pretty quickly took care of that. Neither my husband nor I liked the ribs. They weren't meaty and were tasteless. The pulled pork was okay. Then I realized we were missing the sausage we were supposed to get. Once again, our server rectified that although we took it to go. The manager did apologize for missing two parts of our order and did offer us a free dessert but we declined as we were already full. Overall, I was very disappointed with the food as I was hoping for another good restaurant nearby. The service issues I attributed to it being opening weekend. We'll probably give it one more try and we will for sure buy the beef brisket for take out. read more

If you like salt, you will love this place. I really wanted to like this bbq joint. It's a great space and location. The service was even pretty good, but the food fell short. Everything, with the exception of the sweet corn casserole, was totally over salted. I was excited to order the po boy. The menu says that it has fried shrimp, pulled pork and brisket debris gravy......sound delicious. Well it turns out that it had exactly 3 small shrimp that rolled off the sandwich onto the plate. These weren't just any shrimp, the were cold and the hardest, driest, and most rubbery shrimp I have ever eaten. After eating the first two, I declared that the 3rd was inedible. The rest of the meat on my sandwich was a mixed bag. Some of it was tender delicious bbq, but there were some pieces of really dry meat on there. Note....I generally like bark....but this was a different kind of dry meat. Overall the bbq in the sandwich was over seasoned with salt. My fries were so salty that they were not edible either. My husband got the chicken wings and they were very dry and salty . This was his second visit. He wasn't very impressed on his first visit, but gave them another chance. His verdict....the 2nd time was worse. His advice was to park in their lot, open the door, take in the smell the delicious bbq, then eat somewhere else. We were very disappointed. read more
