Everyone with whom I communicated was professional and knowledgeable. They were able to refinish my bathtub and the entire surrounding area in one day, and it was ready to use the following morning. They were even able to move up the date when the work would take place! Nothing more for which I could ask. read more

I had hairline cracks in the bottom of my Whirlpool Bath. Now, the bottom of it looks great, matches the rest, and is slip resistant. Gunnar responded quickly and even tried to get the job done before the scheduled date. Unfortunately, my schedule didn't permit it. George arrived on time and was very friendly, explained the process, and cleaned up nicely. The service was excellent and I highly recommend The Surface Doctors. Deb read more

We LOVE our refinished bathtub! Gunnar responded quickly to emails and gave us a quote and scheduled our appointment. George was on time and very professional. Before our tub was a non functioning whirlpool tub in a mauve color. We wanted to replace the outdated whirlpool tub with a regular soaker tub, that would have cost several thousands. We got the same result and saved a lot of time and money by using the Surface Doctors. George was able to fill in the jets and convert our unused tub into a gorgeous fully functioning white soaker tub! We are SO happy. Highly recommend them. read more

I recently hired The Surface Doctors to resurface my kitchen countertops and kitchen backsplash. I live in a tiny condo with a galley kitchen and wanted a affordable "cosmetic" upgrade from what I have...peeling laminate counters with heat marks and a tired tile backsplash with old, cracked grout. The tech arrived about ten minutes early and was very courteous and friendly. My small dog is a yappy "pain in the arse" and he was very patient and stopped to pet and talk to her throughout his time at the house. The finished job came out lovely however I am anal retentive and extremely picky. I contacted Gunnar to address a few things I wanted to touch up and they agreed when the tech arrives in a few weeks to refinish my bathroom they will address and touch up areas of concern...again, I'm uber picky, this isn't a reflection on the company itself, I am the type of person that scrutinizes the tiniest of blemishes. Below is a before and after pic. I wanted a clean update, nothing fancy, just something durable and aesthetically appealing and I feel they nailed it! I'd definitely use them again and will be in December. If you aren't handy (I'm not) and want to freshen up your kitchen or bathroom within a day or two, this is a great company to work with! read more

SO best to write this review while the RAGE is fresh on my mind... I had an appointment with Gunner and the The Surface Doctors scheduled for today between 12-4pm. The appointment was for a chip repair in a rental unit of mine. The tech and I are in contact by phone around noon and we agree on meeting over at the unit at 2pm. I arrive at my rental unit at 145pm and as I am parking in a METERED STREET SPACE I get a call from the tech saying that he is delayed at his previous job and he will arrive instead at 3pm. Oh well... ok.. i just pull out my phone and begin the waiting game. At 250pm he calls and says he is 15-20 mins away. Of COURSE... this becomes 335 by the time he actually arrives at the address. I get yet ANOTHER call from the tech guy saying that the building has no service parking. I tell him yes.. this is CHICAGO and unfortunately free parking spaces have gone the way of the dinosaur. There ARE however TONS OF METERED spaces. I look outside the window of my building and can visually see 4-5 empty metered street parking spaces in front of the building. The tech sounds annoyed and says he will continue to "look for parking"??? I mention for MULTIPLE time effect... "park in one of the metered spaces!!!" I will pay for the damn meter... i don't care.. I have already taken off from work to meet this "technician". This is where it gets good... after 10 minutes the technician STOPS RESPONDING TO HIS CELL PHONE and i get a call from Gunner at the main office. He tells me that the "Technician" decided to LEAVE because he couldnt find parking?????????? WTH??? THIS IS CHICAGO... if you are going to do business WITHIN city limits.. EXPECT TO HAVE TO PAY STREET PARKING!! this isnt like the suburbs... CHARGE customers for the parking expense if you like or not.. that is your choice.... but dont FREAKING STAND THEM UP AFTER WAITING ALL DAY just because you cant find a free parking space and then proceed to ignore phone calls???? Gunner could have sounded ANY MORE disinterested with the fact that his "technician" blew off an appointment and then drove away without a word. His response was merely "It's been a crazy day... yea i guess he shouldnt have left" STAY AWAY FROM THE SURFACE DOCTORS... There are PLENTY OF OTHER REPUTABLE businesses on YELP and ANGIES List that deserve your time and hard earned money!! read more

We are in the process of a bathroom remodel, and decided our cast iron tub is in such good condition we'd simply have it reglazed. We are mid-remodel, which is not the recommended time to reglaze the tub, but Surface Doctors agreed to do so as our contractor is on a break from the job for the holiday week. Steve was here two days ago and did a great job and was done in just about 2 hours. The tub looks fantastic! We are to let it cure for 7 days before cleaning it, which is timely for our contractor's start date the following Monday. Thanks so much for working within our schedule and for such a great and reasonable price! Our contractor has been warned per Steve's instructions - cover it and don't mess it up! He (our contractor) plans to refer other customers of his to Surface Doctors as well. We'll update our review if there are any issues in the future, but we anticipate none! read more

I had them come out and do our bathtub with tile surround and ceiling as well as, the fiberglass shower stall in the other bathroom. They arrived on time and worked straight through until it was completed. The process took a very long time. The tech was actually here 13 hours. I felt bad for him being by himself and working so long without any breaks. Otherwise they were courteous and professional. The results are amazing. It looks like brand new. I highly recommend this business instead of putting in new fixtures. read more

I would definitely use them again. The only complaint I had was the appointment was for between 1- 2 pm. They didn't show up until 4ish. Good price, so far quality work, and quick work . Took between 3 to 4 hours to strip old paint and add new paint with slip free bottom. Recommend read more

Marc the service technician who did my work. He was on time & very polite. He repaired my soap dish in my fiberglass tub like it was brand new. Gunnar was also very pleasant to communicate with. I sent him pictures & he provided me with a price & that was the price. No so called extras when Marc came out. You need some good quality work done, call The Surface Doctors!! read more

I had my bathroom re-coat 8 year ago now I am remodeling the bathroom At first we agreed on re-coat the area around the vanity and bathtub for $475 ( the 3 side walls is still very good) but the technician came and told me that there would be a different between new and old color. So I decided to do the whole bathroom for $1025. At first look he did a very UGLY job, he tried to correct them but it still UNACCEPTIBLE. My old shiny walls are rough, not shiny and there are several spots of old color. The vanity area and bathtub are even worse. I do not want to show picture because the new technician (I requested new one) came to correct the work a week later. After long talk he re-coated bathtub, vanity area and some parts of the wall AS NEEDED. he did very good job on his part, the area that he did are shiny and smooth. So it looks OK white but now I have both good smooth and shiny area mixed with bad rough and not shiny walls (he told me that he would do the whole wall but apparently he did not). The second technician asked me how many times I want him to spray my bathroom, my simple answer is just make it right one time! read more

Great job refinishing our whirlpool tub on 9/23/19. George had the work done in a few hours and it looked magnificant. Thanks K & M

I was visiting my old auntie out in Chicago, to help her clean up her house. One of the first things on my to do list, was fixing her expensive damaged bathtub! I called the Surface Doctors, to fix a large chip on her beautiful vintage bathing tub. The service went great! The repairman was right on time, and got the job done promptly. We even asked them to come a 2nd time for polishing & buffing, and they didn't even charge us extra! My auntie now knows who to call next time something comes up with her fancy bathing tub, so I don't have to fly out again from CA! :P If you live in the Chicago, IL area and need bathtub repair, be sure to call the Surface Doctors! :D read more

As we all know, makeover shows are immensely popular on television these days, especially when it comes to DIY and home improvement. The challenge for busy executives or homeowner's who work is entrusting your home improvement to just any contracting company. Fast-forward to my family's current situation: We purchased a "new" ranch in Lake County, circa 1968., great "bones," outstanding floor plan, all the right stuff. Except our dream home was dreadfully outdated, not uncommon but begging for attention, especially the master bath and guest bathrooms. The guest bath for example, had a long-outdated avocado colored tub, surrounded by aqua and white mosaic tile, probably cool for 1968, but woefully outdated in 2014. Our Master bath had an ugly gray basin, dirty beige tile and outdated fixtures. Having owned multiple properties for year's, I know how costly reconstructing a bathroom can be and needless to say, with the guest bathroom being an even larger, greater endeavor, the cost to remodel two would be cost prohibitive for certain. One of my best handymen suggested contacting Owner Gunnar of The Surface Doctors. This move turned out to be one of my best decisions of the year! Gunnar stopped by personally to evaluate our needs, providing expert guidance and actually assuring my wife and I that rehabbing two entire bathrooms was an unnecessary waste of resources. Introducing our family to the joys of resurfacing saved our family literally thousands of dollars-easily, while taking both bath's from outdated and ugly to gleaming and nothing short of spectacular! For example: Our guest bath was resurfaced in white on white, making both our tub and shower walls/mosaic tiles looking brand, spanking new! Having recently repainted and having added new light pendants, a new Corion counter and cool new hardware from Home Depot, what could have easily cost us $10,000-$14,000, only cost us in the hundreds-money well spent transforming our guest bath to shiny and new. For our Master bath, having finally removed the wallpaper and having our painter repaint it in a beautiful Florida Keys teal to go with white wall tile, we decided to get really creative and asked if Gunnar had the creativity to see our vision become a reality. Gunnar enthusiastically took our Master bath under his wings and what was once the ugliest gray basin in Lake County, suddenly became the most decorated, without going over-board. Our basin now matched our walls, while our shower tile gleamed in newly sprayed, resurfaced white to match our tile walls and flooring-stunning. Since Gunnar and The Surface Doctors undertook our project, not a day had gone by where friends, family and guests don't comment on how gorgeous our "new" bathrooms look. Everyone thinks we remodeled them, when in a day and a half, The Surface Doctor's made over both bathrooms with an amazing transformation, unheard of! Our family went from practically embarrassed for guests to use our bathrooms to proud to show them off. The recap: Owner Gunnar cares about his valuable customers. Will personally ensure each customer's satisfaction or he's not satisfied. Will save the average customer thousands in rehabbing costs by simply professionally resurfacing entire bath's of any size. Your friends and family will be envious of how up to date and beautiful your "new" bath is! Before wasting or spending cost prohibitive amounts on reconstruction, one call to Gunnar and The Surface Doctors will make your bathrooms right. Plus: He's attentive, cares about his customer's and quality control. If there's any aspect of your tile, tub, shower, etc, don't hesitate to contact Gunnar today. read more

If I could give them a review with no stars, I would do that! These are the worst tub refinishers and I am still paying for their incompetance a year after they performed their work for me. Their work was subpar leaving gauges and areas of the tub without color. There were also several areas of the tub that had very rough areas, so rough that they were actually uncomfortable to stand on when showering. I hired another company to try to repair the inept work The Surface Doctors had performed and the new company stressed how bad the previous work had been and then went into how much they were going to have to charge me to strip the previous work so they could refinish. DO NOT HIRE THESE HACKS!!! You will be paying for it for years to come. read more

I was and am disappointed in this company. I tried to write a review a year earlier and it was not accepted. I am trying again. I had my tub, the tile around the tub and the sink resurfaced. The sink was not properly covered and the tub peeled within a couple of months. The tile is now peeling. This process was done May 19, 2015 and it was a waste of money. I recently had a plumber in and when he saw the work he said it was not done properly. He knows of another company that does this process and the end result is superior to this company. I feel you are gambling with this company and wasting your money if you decide to use them read more

Great communication, very reasonable price, friendly technician. I am very pleased with their service and would recommend them.

The Surface Doctors did a great job refinishing our cast iron tub. Prior to refinishing, the white finish was wearing away around the drain area and there was some rust around the drain. There were also other minor imperfections/discolorations other places on the tub. Now, it looks like new! We were able to use it the next morning, and the price was reasonable. The owner and staff were pleasant and responsive to phone calls. It's been a few weeks, and it still looks beautiful. We highly recommend The Surface Doctors. read more

Surface Doctors did a great job refinishing my 25-year-old tub that was cracked and rusting around the drain. Gunnar was always polite and answered all my many questions over the phone. Nick, the technician, was very thorough and personable, and was attentive to all the issues I pointed out. The tub looks so good now it's a pleasure to use. Also, SD put on a new drain stopper and ring which covered my old, beat up drain. It shines again! We would use SD again. Sue read more
