Came here last night for dinner as I was craving some ribs and have wanted to try this place. They have outdoor seating but we sat inside (need a mask to enter and they temperature scan you before you sit). Waitress was attentive and friendly. Bread basket came with 4 pieces and 3 pieces of cornbread. They were warm but not piping hot like I would have wanted. One thing I dislike is when any place serves warm or hot bread with hard cold butter. Took a few minutes for water and beer but eventually came. Our salads came with the meal. They were good and nice portion size. The house dressing was very tasty. My wife got the 1/2 rack of St Louis ribs. They were decent sized but smaller than I usually see (almost same size as the baby back ribs). They had plenty of sauce and were cooked nicely. The only issue was the meat was a bit tough and had a bit of a tug to them. Overall not bad but not great. I ordered a full rack of baby back ribs. The ribs were ok overall (would give a 3 out of 5 rating). They were not piping hot, the sauce was bare and some parts of the rack were overcooked causing them meat to be dry. The sauce was very good but no where near enough. Personally I don't like too much sauce but mine were dry. I asked waitress for a side of sauce but she brought BBQ sauce and not the rib sauce. Some bites were tender and other parts had some tug. Baby back ribs should be super tender where the meat falls off the bone but these did not. Normally I choose baby back over St Louis anyway but in my opinion my wife's ribs were better than mine. Just weren't cooked right. Overall I would give a 3.5 but I can't. Supposedly this place has been here for a long time and I just found out about it from my boss. The moment you walk it you can tell the place got some mileage to it. The decor is mostly all wood and pictures of places from the past. The food prices are extremely fair and they even have deals such as ribs and lobster for $20. The BBQ sauce is the main reason why The Spare Rib has remained in business for over three generations. The bbq is not your traditional dry rub, fall off the bone bbq you'd expect in the South. Although the ribs and chicken are certainly some of my favorite items to get at The Spare Rib, the menu is full of choices. Portions of the food and prices have changed over the years, but I imagine that has something to do with the cost of running a business nowadays. Service always remains impeccable and the food never fails to satisfy my cravings. While the food and service have remained consistent, The Spare Rib definitely has lost some of its spark. Back in the day, it would be impossible to get a table for dinner on the weekend with lines out the door. I remember going to their old Hicksville location and it was packed as well. Now, the restaurant is empty on the weekend. Either the pandemic hurt them, the owners are just slowing down, or Americans are eating healthier (don't think it's the last one). My wife and I are long-time diners at TSR. Their food is excellent, and the wait staff is very accommodating and nice. My only problem is that they constructed the booths with very thin people in mind. Riblets were tough and had tiny slivers of bone throughout them. Like nail clipping sized pieces of bone. Fried chicken was good meat was juicy and tender Half rack of ribs were not tender. You would think a place called the spare rib would have fall off the bone tender juicy ribs but not the case here they were a dry and meat stuck to the bones. Table covered in dirty food chunks and sauce sprayed with cleaner. The table still had the salt and pepper shakers on it and the bus boys just sprayed them as well (would you like some chemicals with your S&P?) Most menu items comes served fresh from the deep fryer. Quality is mediocre at best. The burgers tend to be a better option and would recommend sticking with that. They are usually big, juicy, and quite good. Ribs (their specialty), tend to very grizzly. Steaks are way overpriced for what this is. I dined for the first time in awhile yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the updated decor. Really nice dining environment with lots of leather added booths and dark woods. The bar area was also quite nicely upgraded and would return for their 2-4-1happy hour (M-F, 4-6)for drinks and an app. Had Great South Bay on tap, so that was a plus! This restaurant is great! I loved eating here. The food was great. The portions are good! They gave us bread to start out and the meal came with a side salad and a side. The atmosphere was good. Dimly lit but not too dark. When I walked in and saw the sign outside I knew I'd love the place. It's nonsensical all the restaurants that discriminated against you know what status over the past two years and seeing this sign outside made me smile. We need more unity, less division. I always used to come with parents on a Saturday night for a nice dinner out and now here I am, 25 years later, back at the spare rib with my co-workers and friends. The lunch deals here are perfect. I usually get the riblet lunch which comes with a side and a salad. They also have different specials every week. The fried chicken is out of this world. It takes 20 minutes to make so you will have to wait a little longer, but it's amazing. All the ribs, BBQ chicken and extras are delish and come with a ton of food! They have an amazing creamy garlic salad dressing here so make sure you ask for it with your salad. The only thing about the spare rib that isn't out of this world is the desserts. They're okay. I've had them all and they're very good, just not omg amazing like all the other food here. I've been going to the Spare Rib for more than 30 years, specifically for their Baby Back Ribs. I am watching the sad decline of what once was a look forward destination. But alas they have seen me for the last time. Nothing worked! The house salad is now comprised of the poorest quality lettuce, including other poor quality ingredients. The entree, which at one time came with potatoes and usually an interesting side, now gives you the choice of either or. The side of glazed carrots, was something that you would serve a farm animal. The rack of baby backs, was dry and tasteless, far from what barbecue should taste like, which is mouth watering. Any little extra was up priced.
