I've been shopping with Ashley since at least six years ago when she was at a local Campbell farmers market!! I came across her amazing CBD bath fizzes after surgery and my friend recommended a bath fizz with CBD to help ease my pain from stitches and release the stitches themselves. As I shopped at the zero source, this pop-up shop ended up having an actual storefront and has been getting bigger and bigger over the years! I'm so happy for the owner, as well as all the local vendors that have shelving space within her store! I love the idea of reusable products and not creating so much waste in our world! I've tried almost everything here, except for the toothpaste, pills! I need those for camping!! Every employee here is always helpful and friendly, and they always know about everything in the store! I especially love the CBD oils and those really help my chronic pain!! There's also a great section with candles, as well as sage, for the perfect housewarming present and cute little stocking stuffer like presents if you just need some thing here and there. My new favorite are there shower steamers!! I'm currently getting over a sinus infection and bought a pack of the shower steamers for $20 and those completely open up my nasal passage when I go to sleep at night!! if there's one thing, I'm a sucker for, it's zero waste boutiques. The sales associate was so friendly, and happily answered any questions I had about the products. There were many, many options for bath and body products, so maybe do some research before coming! The only recommendations I have for the business is to increase the amount of community jars + make them more visible in-store, and also to provide testers so that you don't have to make a full commitment (or I only get a tiny bit and have to come back later). I don't live close by so I'd love to support the business by buying more, but it's hard when you can't try the products! I ended up grabbing a sunscreen and some face lotion. Love this store, sad that it down sized but I'm still here to support. I did have body soap bar on my list to get, but the bar soap prices look like they went up so I passed on it for this visit. The Shikai body lotion is really good and very moisturizing. I always come back for more. My fave is the coconut but all the scents smell so good! Puretergent hand soap in lemongrass is my first time trying it. Smells really good just like fresh lemongrass. Brush with bamboo toothbrush. It's a pretty good toothbrush as many bamboo toothbrush I've tried are too soft and I feel like they don't clean well. These bristles are firm enough but safe on your gums. Love how it's compostable! We definitely need more zero waste stores! Yes, prices are a bit higher, but it's worth it or environmentally friendly options that are readily available in store. This place is also a small business, so I feel good about supporting that too. I walked around and was impressed by the options! Another reviewer seemed to list out the selection really well. I would attribute them having a more limited selection available because of space limitations - I spoke to someone who was very sweet in saying they listen to customer demands for their inventory and try to incorporate them whenever they can. They focus on stocking local items too which is great. I got a travel size David's peppermint toothpaste and it's working really well! I'm curious to know if at this time they switch out their products often or not! I could see myself trying new brands or different kinds of items. Pretty store but someone reminds me the 'save the planet by buying more stuff' mantra. All these giant bottles filled with soap...I wonder if people who go and refill cannot buy themselves the industrial ones (like the ones corporations use, I am use they sell 5 gallons of liquid soap somewhere) and refill themselves at home. I don't see the hype in this. Nice candles, flower bundles, bamboo toothbrushes and very pretty cosmetics in wood packaging. Now to browse and buy some specific item, like a locally poured candle, but I would not go all the way to refill my soaps, plus I find it more expensive anyways. The mission of the shop is spot on, but the prices are too high for me to make it a regular stop. When I first walked into the store, I was immediately impressed by three things: the heavenly smell (even through an N95 mask), the wide assortment of products available, and the friendliness and high level of service from the staff. There was no shortage of items here to make you think about how you could reduce waste in your everyday life. There were kitchen gadgets to replace Ziplocs and plastic wrap, lots of bars of soap, a wall full of refill bottles, and lots more! I was truly impressed to see the breadth of products in this small space. In the end, I bought about $60 worth of products, including soap, body wash, shampoo, and sunscreen. I really like the Oneka cedar-sage body wash and the rosemary-mint shampoo I bought. I found the store-brand hand soap to have a nice scent but to lack a little in lather. The bars of soap were very fragrant, and I have used a couple as gifts. The one big downside of most of the products is the price; ounce for ounce, every product with a few exceptions is priced among the most premium type of product in its category, but often with the scent and performance of products available at a much lower price point. This is particularly surprising because these products don't need special packaging and labels, which should reduce the cost! In my mind, sustainability also includes an economic dimension; by putting prices out of reach for most people, it takes away from the mission of the store to reduce waste and have a positive impact on the planet. I would definitely go back to the store, if for no other reason than to get some inspiration or to make a gift for someone, but I hope that in the future the store offers a line of products for budget-minded shoppers to make it a real phenomenon. A couple of logistical notes: I am glad I was the only one in the store because the system of weighing containers, filling, and then re-weighing was heavily dependent on the availability of the staff person and the iPad. Finding The Source Zero was a bit challenging for me since I was coming in from the market. So incredibly happy to see San Jose get a zero waste store! For the longest time I've been seeing one of my favorite modern calligraphers on Instagram who lives in Miami share her visits to different zero waste stores and the day has finally come -- San Jose gets one of its own. Warning: the store is surprisingly small (but very cute and cozy). But like many say, we don't need a hundred people recycling perfectly, but a thousand people recycling imperfectly. Smaller is better nothing, and a bunch of little shops are better than just one big one. It is located downtown which means parking can be hard to find, and if you park on the street you will have to pay for it, but there is a parking garage right by the store and I believe they do validation. I didn't park in there though because I wasn't sure if I would be buying anything, so I parked a street down for $2/hour. I feel like a lot of people would ask why you would take the time to go out to a store like this when you can find everything on Amazon for a potentially cheaper price and even have it delivered to your doorstep, but two great reasons -- 1. As someone who goes here, you are taking action to help the environment, so going here would reduce the packaging Amazon would use to deliver your products. Of course, you'd have to account for the fuel you use to get to the store if you're driving. 2. Support your local small businesses!! The aesthetic of the store and the friendliness of the employee is everything you'd want and more. Worker was very helpful with the questions we had and great with checking us out. As a beginner letterer/modern calligrapher/artist myself, this is the kind of business I'd love to one day work with. I love everything that this shop stands for - offering plastic alternatives and more environment friendly products for individuals to use in their everyday lives. They also moved to a bigger spot! Still in the same area as their previous location, walking distance wise. Understandably some of their items are more on the more expensive end because of the time and effort that goes into the production of those items. One of my favorite things were when they had wooden utensils and glass boba straws in stock. Still a beautiful shop and great concept. I am grateful to have a zero waste store near me! This place is located inside San Pedro Square (90 minutes free parking available) and is easily accessible. The selection is pretty good! They have: All purpose cleaning products Laundry products including soap, softener, dryer balls, lavender Dish cleaning supplies including soap, brushes, and sponges Unpaper towels Beeswax wraps Bathroom cleaning powders and liquids Menstrual supplies ranging from cups to reusable pads Hygiene products: tooth care (brushes, floss, powder), makeup, brushes, lots of shampoo and conditioner items including liquids and bars, mineral sunscreens Wooden utensils Metal straws Vitamins? Maybe not so much vitamins as supplements of some kind Candles Pet care items (limited, but cool to see!) The staff are friendly and helpful. If you're not familiar with how this type of store works, this is what you can know: Come prepared with your jars/bags whatever so they can fill whatever you want. Bring different sized options depending on what you need (Like you may want lots of laundry detergent but only a small amount of sunscreen). A staff will fill your items with as much as you like and you're all set to pay! Another note: Not purchasing is the first "R" of the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Greenwashing your lifestyle through consumerism isn't the top hope. I understand we need to hold large corporations accountable for their crimes against the earth, but if we also look to our part then not buying is better than buying. This seems most clear with things like: wooden utensils, glass containers, etc since you probably already have utensils at home you can just pack and use, and reusing a container you already have until you can't anymore is a great way to go before upgrading :) It is a bit pricier than if you were to go to some place like Costco or even Grove, but if you're able to add it to your budget I appreciate taking away the packaging and shipping associated with buying it elsewhere. 4 stars instead of 5 only because I would love to see more cleaning/home options including: floor concentrates, maybe beeswax to "refresh" my beeswax wraps that I made, etc. I understand they cannot have everything and I appreciate the supply they do have, and hope enough people continue coming here so there is more room to continue growing :) read more

No sign of any workers but product was outside the door so someone may have been nearby? Waited for 20 minutes and decided it wasn't worth my time. Several others were waiting as well. Can't say I like this store much anymore and will likely take my business elsewhere. To the owner: Ashley, the last time I came was 05/03 at about 1ish. There was a sign someone would come back an hour later. That doesn't seem reasonable to me. While I understand it's a small business, please consider changing your hours if you cannot accommodate them. I have never had an issue like this with another business, small or big - where about 70% of the time I came to shop it was closed when they said they would be open. I did a ton of research online and the prices here are comparable if not cheaper than online plastic-free shops. By shopping here you reduce your carbon footprint because no one has to drive the package to your house! I bought the Hamby bar shampoo and conditioner- both worked great and will last a long time. SO MUCH TO LOVE about this place. I came to Source Zero with the intention of getting a good haul, and boy I could've bought the whole store if you let me. My favorite part of the store is the liquid refill station. They have everything from shampoo, conditioner, sanitizer, body wash, etc. They carry all kinds of brands to suit your wants and needs. The best part is that they charge per ounce so you can bring your own container and fill it with your favorite. Or, you can try just a few ounces to see if you like it. I feel strongly that many of our department stores should adopt this model. I would pay a little more to have less waste, and to reuse containers if I could. What's cool about this place? They try to carry local products. That's right! You will find locally made candles, soap, food wraps etc. Who doesn't want to support local?! I use to do it online with Fillgood but I can never tell if it will be a product I will like. This store has testers, so you can try before you buy. I love this store! It's nice that there finally is a zero waste store in San Jose and it's also right next to my job. I love the convenience. The workers are all so helpful and kind and always able to give insight on zero waste living. I don't have anything bad to say about this store except they randomly close. The hours are posted on the door and I keep coming within those times, but it's hit and miss. At first, I let it go. The second and third time a note was posted, which is understandable. But today I came at around 12:20 pm and again at 1:10 pm. A note wasn't posted and I'm assuming it's too early for a lunch, considering they open at 11:30 am today. It's just mildly annoying when I come in with a bag full of jars clanking around, to have to walk back empty hbded Maybe just post on the door an eta or note letting customers know you will be closed. They have an assortment of self-care items (bamboo toothbrush, biodegradable floss, tooth paste tablets, shampoo bars etc) There are bees wax (and vegan friendly) wraps as well as other reusable food storage silicone bags. They had an assortment of cleaning brushes, cloth paper towels, reuseable earswab (Last swab) and period devices (the cup, thinkx panties) among many many other things packed into this little shop (while still being pleasing to the eye) They also have an assortment of bulk refillable liquids such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, rubbing alcohol, detergents, etc. DON'T FORGET to give them your container to weigh. They will fill what you need after to make sure you don't get charged for the weight of your container. Forgot to BYOC (bring your own container)? No problem! They have a box of donated containers you can fill and take with you. Also thank you for having everyone spray their hands with sanitizer prior to entering the shop. When I found out that this store sold dandy roots candles I decided to make the drive from south San Jose. There was plenty of parking in the garage on a Sunday afternoon. Upon entering the store I felt as if I was in a hostile environment, the worker constantly looking over my shoulder without offering any help. In the end, I decided to buy the candle because I like to support small businesses. But even the checkout process was horrible, there was no communication nor customer service skills from the worker. This is a great place and I'm so glad we stopped by. I only got a couple of items while we were here but I'm definitely going to come back to pick up some Christmas gifts later on. There is a great selection of household goods and beauty/skincare goods and they a BYO container section for pay-by-the-ounce liquids which is great for cutting down waste. This is is best shop to find your zero waste swaps, or for the environmentally conscious consumer. This shop is something you can't miss if you're in the area or are traveling here. First of all, the prices are really affordable, being eco-friendly doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money, I've learned you save money overtime with reusable and good quality items. They have a fantastic refill station for shampoos, conditioners, body wash, moisturizer, hand soap, dish soap, even face masks and witch hazel. Tip: bring in your own containers or extra bottles lying around to use them for the refill station, they won't charge you for the weight of your container only the product, but if you don't have any containers they have some. They have stuff for the kitchen like produce bags, strainer bags, straws, boba straws, cups, stasher reusable bags in place of ziplock bags, sponges they have silicone,I believe, covers for your food instead of tinfoil. They have bathroom things like a safety razor, reusable period products, toothbrushes,toothpaste, toothpaste tabs, floss.
