The Social Study is such a cute, underrated bar in the city! I love their selection of drinks and the aesthetic retro decor. Amazing date night spot and open surprisingly late. :) They have a wide array of wines, beers, and signature cocktails. I got their hot apple cider and it was good! It wasn't strong [:(] but it was definitely delicious [:3]. The chairs built into the wall were a little uncomfy but they looked so chic. The bar projected an anime on the wall on the night that we went and it made for a great vibe. Service was a little slow (it seemed like it was only one person servicing the whole place) but they were friendly and attentive! I first heard if this spot from a co-worker that insisted we try this place out. I purposely avoided looking up reviews on the place because I wanted to form an honest and unbiased opinion. TL;DR: cute spot for quick drinks, they only have wine and beer but they have some interesting combinations for cocktails We stumbled into this spot after walking around Japantown and needing a bit of a breather from the crowds after lunch. This is a super cute spot closer to the Fillmore side and has a good amount of people in there without feeling too packed. Service is friendly and efficient. You order at the counter and can either sit at the bar or carry your drinks to seats. The set up is really cute and the mismatched furniture suits the vibe. We've tried a variety of drinks, from beer and wine to some of the cocktails. They also serve tea and espresso drinks, so their espresso martini has a fresh shot of espresso! The list is quite extensive so I'm sure there is something for everyone. They serve food as well but I haven't had a chance to explore that side of the menu. read more

Came here for HH on a weekday. It's a good intimate space if you are coming in a smaller group but the place itself is intimate and chairs are somewhat uncomfortable. It's nice for conversation but wouldn't stay longer, Our group was 3 which already felt cramped. They do have board games and happy hour food options. Staff was friendly it was good crowd inside. Paid street parking available which I believe ends at 6 pm but can't remember from the top of my head. Sanfrangria was a watered down from the ice. I really love the concept of this hybrid study/social bar but the execution fell a little flat for me. I've been here a few times and the vibes are very cozy, but the tables don't feel big enough for any studying (some really barely fit a laptop). They're also very strict about no laptops after 5pm which is a bummer as they could have probably capitalized on more customers who are looking for a work café option open in the evening. Socializing wise, it's a cute spot with a fun menu. I like the winetails (some are like fizzy ciders) but I'd stay away from the sangrias (way too sweet and doesn't taste fresh). I would order everything again except maybe the ginger limeade. I do think likely I just received an accidentally watered down batch, because it tasted more like flavored water than a limeade. Really cute cafe/lounge near Japantown. My friend and I ducked into this bar on a rainy afternoon to grab a quick drink before dinner. I love that they have wine and soju based cocktails if you're looking for a lighter drink. I got the yellow diamond with white wine and prosecco which was great and really bright with the orange peel without being too sweet. The interior is cute, but you can't really sit on the chairs on the wall because they're so small - and the interior is very woody and chunky, so it doesn't feel comfortable. This place is so cozy! My bestie and I decided to stop in for a drink after dinner in Japantown. It was busy, but still relaxed enough to grab a seat at the bar. This place served cocktails with beer, wine, soju and sake bases. I got a tequila infused sake drink with sage and honey, and my friend got a Prince inspired drink with plum notes. Wanted to find a cafe and space to do some work in and ended up checking out The Social Study. To my pleasant surprise, there was so much room to sit, a menu full of food and drink items, and the warmest staff. You'll notice when you sit that laptops and work computers are not allowed on tables after 5 and you have to order another item after 90 minutes of sitting. I actually don't mind these rules since I very rarely get work done at a cafe, plus it gives me a reason to try different things on the menu. The Social Study is one of those special spots I kinda want to gate-keep, but I won't because they deserve the applause. We came in on a weekday to crack out some work on our computers, before their 5pm lap-top ban that's enforced in most areas including the bar, making way for their after work bar crowd, for which they lower the lighting and turn on a movie from a projector that plays on a brick wall. Posted up at the bar, we ordered their cheese plate / small charcuterie, honey latte and Americano. The honey latte goes well with that delicious platter of goodies. I'm sure wine would pair well too. It was Taco Tuesday, so we took advantage and enjoyed their three veg tacos with a beer of choice from their tap. The guy at the bar (who is awesome) told us that the lady who makes their tacos used to own a nice taco place, and the quality and craftsmanship of these tacos speak to that. Ambiance is very weird now - they had last call when we walked in at about 9pm, and then bartender stood at the door and held it open until everyone left at 940, making patrons wait outside for the Ubers we'd ordered. Posted hours were 1030pm? She let a few people stay sitting at the bar so seemed like they maybe just wanted to close it up for a private party. This is my second time this week visiting The Social Study. Both times they've played some awesome music! It sets the tone in this really unique bar. The service is pretty quick, and they serve beautifully crafted drinks, and fresh real food. I'm pretty sure all orders are fresh made upon order, no microwaves. I ordered cookies and milk and the cookies baked for about 10 minutes and served super warm. I was in remote work mode heaven with that little treat! By 5pm computers are not allowed at the bar. Along with the mixed drinks they have coffee, a pretty good list of beer by the bottle/can, some on tap, and wine by the glass or bottle. They also have a kitchen that serves up snacks (it seems a little later in the afternoon). I ordered the chocolate factory beertail, the yellow diamond winetail, and tasted the red corvette winetail. Winetails were a bit sweet, but I still enjoyed my yellow diamond. The chocolate factory was similar to an espresso martini but made with Guinness. Came here on a Thursday night and it luckily wasn't too busy! You order at the bar and the seating is first come first serve. It is a smaller place so may be hard to find a table when it's busier but was pretty easy in a Thursday night! They have games available to play which was really nice and the ambience was nice. For drinks, my friend and I ordered the Fillmosa which is Prosecco and tangerine juice, and Little Apple which is Prossseco and Apple juice. These both were really good but I recommend the Little Apple if you want a drink on the sweeter side. I walk by this place all the time, I think the decor is pretty neat and it seemed pretty inviting to people who want to work or hang out. I came there for the first time today during happy hour, the dude at the bar was courteous and helpful with the menus. The beer selection wasn't too impressive but I get the feeling that most people come in for wine or cocktails anyways. I took one of the side tables and had a drink; barely enough space to sit with all my stuff but I wanted to chill out before I head over to the airport. I needed to finish a couple work items as well so I took my laptop out and asked for the WiFi password. Again, nice interaction with the fella at the bar, this place was gaining rapport with me. I was considering staying for a bit and ordering more. Then, a lady who had been serving tables exclaimed to me, rather rudely, that there are no laptops allowed after 5, and it was almost 6. This soured the whole visit, as there were multiple opportunities to let me know before causing a bit of a scene with people looking over. It was embarrassing, I wish I saw whatever sign said that. I should know, as I walk by this place all the time. I could've been doom scrolling my phone instead as I was alone but I don't know what difference it makes. Regardless it could've been delivered better, Ive received the same comms plenty of times before in other places. It made me feel that I was not their desired clientele, and that this place would only treat people well if they are familiar with them. That last part is just some conjecture but I feel bad that that is even my assumption given the experience. When I searched for bars to work from, this place came up and I honestly thought that yes, this is a bar that I can chill and work and it's called "The Social Study" so perfect! However, I was disappointed when I saw that you can't work at big tables or bar area after 5pm. They don't allow laptops on there. The only tables you could work from are the most uncomfortable and smallest tables ever. It completely defeats the purpose. I thought this was a work/study bar??!! I added some photos of those seats.
