I was lucky to be invited to one of the preview nights for this place last week. The Smoke Haus has two other restaurants in Cardiff and Swansea and I was intrigued to see what their first venture into the Midlands would be like.
We arrived to find a graffiti'd stairway which takes you up to a spacious restaurant. It is housed in what used to be Tin Tins restaurant in Brindley Place, one of the prime dining locations in Birmingham.
The restaurant itself is designed very much on an American theme, there is a large bar with screens showing sports and the music (which can be controlled by the customers via the wifi apparently) is very much based on American rock. The seating is a mixture of booths and tables and the restaurant has a capacity for 150. The walls are filled with framed pictures of famous film, music and sporting icons and there are also lots of graffiti tags on the walls and pictures.
Our waitress introduced herself and left menus with us but failed to mention what we could have as part of the preview evening. After enquiring we were told by the owner Jayne that the food was free but we had to pay for drinks. Having seen pictures of the food portions in the press we resisted the temptation to go too crazy and ordered a portion of nachos with chilli to share to start followed by a hot dog and a donut burger for main. I also had a strawberry daquiri while my friend opted for a coke.
Our nachos arrived quickly and were tasty, the chilli was flavoursome and quite spicy. Once this was taken away, our mains arrived quickly and the portions were ridiculously large (see my photo for evidence!). My hotdog was tasty, my only criticism is that the bread roll wasn't up to much, like something you'd get from a supermarket and it quickly disintegrated into crumbs. The Donut burger actually had two full donuts as the bun and I was assured that it was very tasty. Needless to say, neither of us could finish our meals and both passed on the option of dessert due to extreme fullness!
Whilst I am always very grateful for a free meal, I'm afraid this place didn't really blow me away. The food was tasty enough and good value for money (if you can manage to eat it all!) but in my opinion there are places in Birmingham (both restaurants and street food vendors) who do this kind of food better, hence only three stars. I really wasn't that keen on the interior either, the graffiti tags everywhere struck me as trying a bit too hard to be cool. I don't think I'll be rushing back unfortunately. read more
