Yep - really really really like this place, they just do it so well! Usually the best places in life are worth going off the beaten track for and this little gem is hidden under some railway arches near a train station. Think "I might get stabbed down here, but it'll be worth it for the awesome prize" The 'awesome prize' is a fairly concise but fantastic burger and fries menu with great beers from Siren and tasty pop (Root beer for me!) I had the doughnut burger with bacon and cheese, very nice, very unhealthy but oh so good to taste! The crazy fries I had (can't remember the name, they were just the ones with everything on) were fantastic too - loved the kick. Overall £15 each for burger, fries, drink and a tip - well worth it too as all the staff were super friendly. Oh yeah - great tunes too!

Having tried the Original Patty Men's burgers at Digbeth Dining Club, I was very excited to finally visit their new permanent location! The location is a bit confusing and off the beaten path for folks who may not be familiar with Birmingham geography (tucked in a railway arch on a street with not much else to speak of). If arriving on foot, the area might feel a tad sketchy for someone navigating alone at night. But the space is really awesome! Anyway, onto the important part... as other reviews make clear, the burgers are really amazing. The Original Patty Men knocked it out of the park by making the juiciest, most scrumptious burgers in Brum. They don't skimp out on the buns either... the bun (not the doughnut one, sorry) I had was moist and fluffy-- I find a lot of burger places think of buns as an afterthought... not here! OPM's spiced fries topped with slaw are really good as well ...honestly, my only real complaint is that when my food was gone, I was still hungry for more! The kind-of-cons: On a Friday night, the place was rammed and it didn't feel like they had enough staff (I think there were only 2 people working the tables, and one was also working the bar). On the plus side, the staff were INCREDIBLY friendly, and even though it was crowded, once our order was taken the kitchen cranked those burgers out in a very respectable amount of time! For a stripped-down burger joint it *is* a tad pricey compared to other similar places, but I'm happy to shell out the few extra pounds because those burgers are just so damn good! A must-visit for any burger lover in Birmingham!

Seth S. and I finally made it to OPM to try the burgers. After sampling almost all of the loved burgers in Birmingham, I can happily say OPM make my favorite burger. We went while 2 festivals were going on in the area, so there was a bit of a queue. I didn't love standing outside for 20 minutes, but the food is worth it. People after us chose to crowd inside and made it hard for people to leave - so don't be a jerk - if there's a queue keep it orderly mmk. Whoever decorated OPM needs to come to my house. The cow Mary with her little burger heart kills me (in a good way). I think I've shown my picture of it to 10 people so far this week. OPM is hipster goodness to the core - sheet metal, Edison lights, folding chairs, wood building materials, jungle tag art, and cool beats sum up the vibes. We were seated at the bar top. I like the stools - not too hard and comfortable enough that I didn't consciously think about being on a stool the whole time. Our servers were both super friendly and the food came out pretty fast. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, spiced fries, and a slice of chocolate oreo layer cake. I asked for the cake to come out first because life's short and you should eat dessert first. This is not the area where OPM shine. It was a box cake mix and came from the freezer. Pretty average. BUT the burgers. Oh my the burgers. That delightful burger took me back to my childhood. The meat is fresh, perfectly balanced, seasoned, and cooked on a grill-top. The toppings were masterfully executed and the buns are buttery, fluffy brioche, also grilled for maximum flavor. The spiced fries taste like you're licking the state of Louisiana. Deeeelicious y'all. The spice definitely creeps up on you. It's got a nice warm kick. I'd highly recommend OPM. It's nestled on the other side of the train underpass from Selfridges - just down from Moor Street Station. It's unassuming and a little hard to find from the outside. Go ahead. Knock three times on the super secret black door, you'll be glad you did.

Original Patty Men have been supplying Birmingham's street food scene with awesome burgers for some time, including their famous krispy kreme burger. I've somehow managed to miss them and so tonight was my first OPM experience. Birmingham has been lacking a restaurant where you can get filthy street food burgers. You can get some great burgers from the pubs and there's plenty of chains. But there hasn't been anywhere to get an oozy, dirty street food style burger before now. Luckily for us, OPM have opened a little restaurant under a railway arch behind Moor St station. It's not the most pleasant area at the moment, it's quite dark and grim. This could have lost it a star but realistically someone has to be the first to set up in an area. I like the idea of the railway arches being used more. The place itself is fashionably stripped back, which suits the location. There's lots of tables and seats so it will be able to seat a fair few people. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and offered a table by our friendly waiter. He was great throughout the whole evening, really relaxed and able to chat about the drinks and food. You wouldn't have known they have only been open two days. The drinks menu is beer heavy as they have partnered with Siren brewery. There's lots of interesting bottles, cans and draft to try as well as a few soft drinks, wines and spirits. I had a very interesting sour peach beer. Food itself was perfect. I went for a classic bacon cheeseburger. Oozy and meaty with pickles and mustard to sharpen things up. The bun was great too, not too heavy. I had mine with plain skin on fries but you can also have them with spice powder or topped with coleslaw etc. I tried a bit of the krispy kreme burger too and it tasted like what dreams are !made of. So having that next time! We all shared a kit kat brownie to finish and this was lovely too. Highly recommend finding this place- it's 2 minutes from the bullring and so worth it. Three drinks, burgers and fries plus a brownie came to £50.

Original Patty Men (@OriginalPattyM) have been a feature on the street food scene for a few years, garnering a reputation for some of the best burgers in the country. Now they've partnered with Siren Craft Brewery to open a permanent site in a railway viaduct arch behind Moor Street Station. The menu is simple. 5 different burgers, 4 made with their signature aged beef patties, 1 for vegetarians. 3 varieties of handcut fries. Beans and slaw. Fans will be glad to see the infamous Big Verns Krispy Ring, a bacon cheeseburger in a doughnut, is present and I can confirm it is as exceptionally good as ever. I also had some spiced fries which were also excellent. The burgers range from £6 to £7.50, and the fries from £2.50 to £3.50. (the vegetarian burger comes in a yoghurt buttermilk bun and the beans are meaty, so any non-carnivores in your party might prefer the nearby Warehouse Cafe) Siren Craft have a couple of beers on keg, Liquid Mistress and Soundwave IPA when I visited. There's also a small but excellent selection of craft beers in cans and bottles. My Beavertown Gamma Ray and Soundwave IPA were both great beers. Wine, spirits and soft drinks round out the beverages. It's a small place, I think less than 40 covers, and i'm sure it's going to be popular. It was busy when I visited at about 8.30 on a Thursday evening, but the service was fantastic. The opening times are 11.30am to 11pm Thursday to Saturday, and 11.30am to 10pm Sunday, closed on Monday to Wednesday. Birmingham has become overrun with mediocre burger restaurants charging inflated prices for overcooked, underseasoned burgers in stale buns. O.P.M. is the real deal. You will not find a better burger in Birmingham, and the pricing is very competitive. Shaw's Passage might not be the most glamorous location, and the decor is on the basic side, but the welcome is warm and the food and beer exceptional. In short, go.

I was massively looking forward to trying out Original Patty Men's new restaurant and I was not disappointed. Hidden away behind Moor Street Station this place is a real find. I actually took my Mom here the other day and in true motherly fashion she could not decide what she wanted to eat so I did the order for us. I ordered two of the bacon cheese burgers, a side of spiced fries, a jalapeno slaw and the bbq beans with bacon. Everything was amazing but the starts for me as expected was the burger, it was juicy and perfectly cooked topped with a bit of salad a great sauces. I would recommend the slaw here also as it is rustic and fresh just giving your meal that bit of crunch. The Original Patty Men stall at Digbeth Dining was always a solid choice when it was there so I am so happy to see this place open up and be received so well by the Birmingham community. I can't recommend it enough. When you are next in town and looking for a filthy burger get down here and get one of the very best in Brum.

I finally made it to OPM this week and I absolutely loved it. It was Saturday night and we were out for my boyfriend's birthday. We were pre-warned by friends that a large group might not get in on a Saturday evening. However, we got lucky. About ten of us crammed in around one of the outside benches and had a great time. The menu isn't huge but it doesn't need to be. I chose the Big Verns Krispy Ring (an old favourite) and found that my memory just didn't do it justice. The mix of flavours in this burger work perfectly together, and the OPM patty is cooked to perfection. The only problem was that I wanted another one immediately! I also shared some spicy fries and ODB fries. The ODB fries come triple cooked and loaded with spice mix, jalepeno slaw, mayo and onion. They go perfectly with the burgers. There was a fairly large drinks selection. I chose wine but many of our group chose from the craft beer specials list and everyone had good things to say The interior of the restaurant is simply and modern, although the tables seat a maximum of six people. If you are in a group there are two large benches outside. It is under cover so you should be fine even if it is wet.

The first time I head about OPM was way back at the digbeth dining club. When they were flipping burgers outta vans. Since then they have managed to get a unit under and arch just behind Selfridge's carpark. Yes its off the beaten track but then sometimes those little good places usually are. The front of the place has a huge glass façade but no signage and you can't use the main door you have to use the side door. Be care full when you open the door though they have a steep flight of stairs going down as you walk in. So they have about 25/30 covers in the restaurant so its fairly small you can eat in or take out. They have about 3/4 burgers including specials with fries, special sides, coleslaw and lots of drinks on offer too. Its a very simple menu but it works well for what it is. When the food came the portions seem small on such a big tray that it was served on. But having said that I was full after eating my krispy kreme doughnut burger with bacon and cheese and OPM dirty fries were good too good portion size in the chips. Both tasted great the sweetness from the doughnut and the fat/ meatiness from burger complimented each other very well. It was about £12 each for a burger fries and a soft drink each which isn't too bad at all. Will come back again soon.. Hope they add something new to the menu next time..

Located a short 5 min walk from moor street station, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Brum city life. It's not often that you swipe on yelp and see so many full 5 star ratings at once, so I had to try this place out and decide myself. Well, the verdict I agree with everyone... YES this place is awesome, the menu is small but mate they do it so freaking well. The décor is what I like to call 'Hipster chic'!! . The fries are fried to perfection topped off with Siracha !! The burger is full or flavor and tasty goodness We chose -The special sprinkled with crunchy pork scaratchings -Bacon cheese With a fresh can of Cream soda, yum but I was a little sad that they didn't serve tea #heartbroken but none the less Well done OPM, after a run to work off that yummy burger I'll be back Have a good day everyone, thanks a bunch for reading

The original patty men menu, offers a range of burgers and sides and also a range of soft drinks and alcoholic drinks

This was my first time visiting original patty men after recommendations by friends that have visited previously, my overall experience has been 100%. The service provided was of top standard, spoken through the menu with the waitress (Eva) in which she offered her specials on the menu too! She also told us about herself about to start the Stoptober campaign to raise money for charity! The food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering which is a good thing if you just want something quick and easy (message me) ;) - myself and my daddy ordered the two specials which we split, having the thigh chicken burger and the spicy beef burger sided with a portion of naked fries and ODB fries! The food was pleasant to taste but I am more favourable of the spiced beef burger! I will definitely come back to visit, I recommend this place for anyone that wants a different experience on dining, a place that's local to the city centre with lovely staff! It's definitely a 5 stars from me.

    Donut burger. :)

I've been a fan of the OPM food truck at digbeth dining club for a couple years now, so I've been looking forward to trying their restaurant since I heard they started it up. First off, the food was excellent as always. I got the glazed doughnut burger, which is the best worst thing you will ever eat. It's not healthy for you in any way, but it's something you have to eat at least once. Essentially, this is a bacon cheeseburger but the bun is a sliced and inverted glazed krispy kreme doughnut. It's a fantastic combination of sweet, savory, and salty and I highly recommend it. They also sell a root beer, which I don't get to drink often in the UK, which complimented the food nicely (especially if you don't want an alcoholic beverage). The only downside to the food was that the burger itself was smaller than I expected considering that it cost 7 GBP. It cost the same price as the standard bacon cheeseburger, so I don't think the price is due to the cost of the doughnut. That being said, my wife's burger patty (she got the standard bacon cheeseburger) was bigger than mine so it may have just been the luck of the draw that I got a relatively smaller burger. Also, the restaurant itself is a little hard to find. It's nestled under a bridge in Digbeth around the corner from the back of Selfridges at the bullring. That being said, I had a great time at OPM and plan on going back! I recommend that you check it out.

Shit son. I can't even. Like totally. Srsly? OMfingG. Burgers. This place is painfully cool, painfully delicious and painfully not nearer to my house. Best burgers in Britain. Give these guys the $10,000. They even served me my burgs after closing times. That, my friends, is customer service.

Finally got round to trying OPM and was not disappointed. Bacon cheeseburger with ODB fries was superb. You get a pile of toppings on the ODB fries which was well worth the extra charge. Tried one of the regular Siren craft ales on draught which was excellent albeit quite expensive at £4 for two thirds of a pint. Top notch service as well and good music. Will definitely be back, highly recommended.

The burgers are a double burger as standard, and if you opt for a double burger - you get a quadruple burger. Well, blow me down... They make some seriously good grub. Me and Dan had perused the menu from Deliveroo and decided we would go for the set meal for 2 (coming in at £22.50 including delivery). This entailed 2x burgers (1x "Dirty Roo" and 1x "Just plain dirty") Burgers with 2 portions of fries and chicken wings. As we had, had a bit of back and forthing with Dirty Cow on Twitter, they had kindly offered to substitute one portion of wings for hot wings for us to try. Now, these were seriously good and recommended if you are ordering off the main menu. They were pretty saucy, but gave a good tingle on the tongue. Recommended for spice fans (but might be a bit hot if you the kind of person who prefers a korma). The food was well packed, all the different bits were separate and everything was delicious. We were so full, we couldn't move after eating. If you're hankering for a big, dirty burger on an evening, you won't go far wrong by giving these guys a try.

With the wealth of burger companies popping up in the street food scene competition is stiff and as we've been spoiled with some truly incredible burgers mediocrity really shows. But I'm delighted to say that this is far from the case with dirty cow. For £20 we were delivered two burgers, two portions of fries and two portions of hot wings. They graciously changed our order to one portion BBQ wings and one of the suicide hot wings and I'm so glad they did. The BBQ wings were smokey and sweet without being overly sickly like some BBQ wings and the suicide wings, oh man were they good! I love spice and for a moment thought these would get the better of me but I powered through and once I did the fruit spicy sauce came into its own - I even mopped up the remaining sauce with my fries! As part of the deal were two burgers: one your fairly standard beef burger topped with lettuce, pickles and tomato, the other with the same BBQ sauce as the wings, bacon and frazzles! You heard me... MOTHERFLIPPIN' FRAZZLES! This gave some really nice texture to the burger and this one was hands down my favourite. The beef patties were succulent and tasty, although could have been a little rarer in my opinion but that's not my call to make. A great addition to the Birmingham burger family and if you're down on Broad Street or in need of a burger fix at home then check these guys out. I imagine we'll see great things from them.

We ordered three plates of topped fries, two types of wings, and three burgers. I also ordered a session ale, that sadly I don't remember the name of. The place was busy, so service wasn't super quick, but that's not an issue. I had the traditional normal wings, which are fried in breadcrumbs, and served with an amazing tangy ranch style sauce. Cooked perfectly. There were also some of the Asian style on the table. Which were equally as incredible. The fries, were topped with coleslaw, slightly spicy comeback sauce. Wonderfully done. The burgers got thumbs up all around. There was a buffalo and two hot head, I couldn't sing it's praises enough. My favourite chicken place to date, has been crackbird in Dublin. This has taken its crown. Bravo. (The beer was great)

This has been one of our locations three times now, and I'm beginning to wonder why it's not been more. Service during the day is casual, sit where you like, here's a menu, back in 5. The food selection is BBQ tastic, and is served very similarly to the big states places, on a little red tray. Nice but small craft beer selection, nice range of cocktails and spirits. There's even PBR if you're looking for the complete USA experience. My friend always goes for the Buffalo Black burger, which I have to say is phenomenal. I've varied and gone for the brisket one, and the pulled pork meal. Sides include "loaded" chilli cheese fries - which deserve a mention on their own. Burnt ends (side of more meat please!) and 'slaw. It's all been good, I've not experienced a bad bit of food there. Price isn't bad, for two of us last time it was £45. That was for the two burgers, burnt ends, mac n cheese, chilli cheese fries, and four beers. I'd like to see something like a Nashville hot chicken plate on the menu with the BBQ stuff, but other than that, this place is wonderful. It sells all of the things I like. Bravo. This place generated a ton of buzz before the doors were opened mid November, so naturally I wanted to try it! After stalking their Facebook, it seemed the best time to grab a table and avoid long waits was right at opening. My dining partner and I turned up shortly after noon on a Saturday and were seated immediately. The first thing i noticed is how intimate the venue is. There really is only a handful of tables. We opted for our own high top table as stools aren't the most comfortable seating. The menu is simple and specific. I'd check it out ahead of time so you know what you're in for. I thought the servers were great. Timing of food, not as great. They were rammed but we were the first people sat for the afternoon so I'd expect less of a wait than 25 minutes for starters. We shared some wings and beef chili cheese fries. Now, I am from Buffalo, NY. The chicken wing capitol of the world. We invented and perfected chicken wings. Its hard to compete with our wings in this country. Back to the review, here the wings were left still attached which I kinda liked. Usually you find the drums and flats separated so this was actually a nice change up. I do think they needed more sauce. Ours were nice and crispy but dry. Overall they were a nice choice for a starter. Ooh and the cheese fries are lovely and served in a little baking tin. As for my main, I had a buttermilk chicken sandwich which was juicy and crispy goodness. The roll was a bit too hard for my liking. I left most of it on my plate. But the chicken was amazing. Random fact about me: I love pickles or gherkins as you Brits call them. It's always a nice surprise to see a place over here serving pickles. I asked for some on my sandwich and only got one tiny piece. Step up your pickle game Buffalo & Rye! I almost forgot to mention the cocktails!! Such wild and crazy concoctions here. I tried a grape fizz and red kool aid inspired drink. Grape fizz blew me away. Kool aid was a bit uninspiring. Not as sweet or flavorful as I imagined. There's also milkshakes that looked wonderful. Sadly I was too full for one. I really liked this place. Although I can't see myself visiting it as often as the other BnTs, it's still worth a pop in. Plan accordingly. It's busy!

I think I understand the point of Five Guys now…read more On Tuesday evening I was walking down Broad Street after an event with plenty of cocktails but not much food. I was considering popping into one of the various cheap takeaways down there but then I remembered: there is now a Five Guys on Broad Street. It's at the top of the road, near the cinema, which is a bit of a genius move. It's quick and easy to eat before watching your film. Note before. Please do not take your burger into the cinema. It's very white and bright in there. It's basically a burger fast food joint, but the aesthetic is maybe a little cleaner. The ones in Solihull and the Bullring are always full of teens but this was more relaxed, with about ten people in there. Despite it being around 10pm, it felt quite comfortable and relaxed. Saying that though, I took my food away as the bright white lights didn't make me want to eat. So, you order at the tills. You can have a burger, cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger or smaller versions of all three. There are a variety of toppings you can choose from, all included in the price. Chips are brought separately. If you're on your own you do not need a large, just have the small. Drinks are also priced separately. You may have heard about the FREESTYLE coke machine. It is quite fun. Once you've ordered, you are given an order number and then you wait at a different counter. I liked being able to watch the burgers get cooked fresh. My order was bagged up and the random extra scoop of chips thrown in and I headed off. Service was very friendly but not overly friendly throughout. It was pretty fun being able to eat it on my sofa. Pros: The burger was still hot, as it had been wrapped up well in foil. The burger was thicker and better than other fast food chains. The cheese melted perfectly. The BBQ sauce was serviceable. The pickle cut through the meat and cheese. The chips are really good- skin on fries. Cons: The bun is not very good. I've been spoilt with buttermilk and brioche and sourdough. I don't understand the extra scoop of chips. My small burger and small chips was £9.80. It's not a place I actually want to sit and eat, ever. OPM is cheaper and better. So while there are plenty of pros, so there SHOULD be for nearly £10. I feel I would have loved it when I was 14 but that's when I wouldn't have been able to afford it. I can't help feeling that all these people raving about Five Guys have never had a proper street food burger. I appreciated mine at 10pm when I was hungry and a bit drunk and I think that's what will take me back there.

The caijun chips are nice and have tried them before in another five guys restaurant, but yet again I feel that charging £2.75 for small Caijun chips is a bit too much. I don't have much of a sweet tooth but was asked by the lady serving me if I would like to try one of their special milkshakes so having heard good things about these from work colleagues I thought I'd give the Oreo milkshake a try. I was charged an extortionate price of just over £4.50 (I cant remember the exact price as it was a while ago now) for what was a normal Oreo shake which I have had in other Dessert Parlours for half that price. What I paid for small caijun chips and a milkshake was disgusting in my opinion as this is fattening fast food at the end of the day so the price should reflect that. They need to put their prices down because what they charge for what you get (mediocre tasting fast food at best) is not in any way acceptable and I did not like how the lady serving me was constantly talking to her colleagues whilst serving me, I would get in trouble for doing this at work and its very unprofessional.

There is plenty of seating, perfect for a pair or large groups. I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered the appetizer salad with pulled pork BBQ on top and shared a side of fried pickles. I was a little disappointed in the pulled pork. Being from North Carolina (home of pulled pork BBQ in the states) and eating at a place with smoke in the name, I was expecting smoked BBQ. The pork is just roasted like what you'd expect to come on a bap and lacks the tenderness that comes with slow smoking. The BBQ sauce at the table has a nice smoke flavoring added, so I was able to drown my salad in that for an approximation of the smoky flavor I craved. The salad portion is very generous and uses fresh veg. The fried pickles need a little tempura batter mixed in with the corn meal and maybe a little more time in the fryer for a better texture.

First of all, this restaurant is HUGE. Incredibly big and spacious, with an assortment of booths and tables and a huge bar. The decor of the place is awesome-- fun pieces of americana all over the place and funky graffiti all over the walls. But the highlight of every place is the food, and well, the food was just OK. I opted for a pulled pork sandwich, and a side salad instead of fries. The pork was good (mostly because they have a fantastic BBQ sauce) but definitely didn't taste slow-cooked. The salad was served without any dressing which was a bit weird, since it was huge and mostly lettuce. By the way, portions here- GIGANTIC. Come with an empty stomach! Neat selection of American beers. I don't know. I wasn't incredibly impressed, but my meal was satisfying, and the BBQ sauce is tasty. I'll have to try a few more things on the menu...

We both got an award-winning burger, and it was clear why they were award-winning. Juicy and flavourful! Based on that alone, I would rate this 4 or 5 stars - but the reason why I give it 3 stars is my perception of the lack of value. While the burgers are delicious, they aren't that big and the cost was quite high. For me, the gold standard in Brum is Five Guys, and while it is a better burger, it costs about the same despite being smaller. Sunday was the launch of XP at the Mockingbird Theatre. This is a geek themed event held once a night and is a bit of a mecca for all things board game, computer game, quiz and film orientated. Naturally we had to go. I am currently on a bootcamp scheme (see http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fit-body-bootcamp-birmingham for info), meaning I am on a strict diet of proteins, fats and No carbs. After consuming a smoothie for my breakfast and a salad for my lunch, I was starving hungry by 5pm. Everyone seemed to be either ordering pizza (a major no-no for me) or heading to Subway for their tea. I thought neither of these would be an option before a helpful person mentioned that Subway did salad bowls, problem solved... Or so I thought. Despite having all of the components of salad, Subway in Digbeth DON'T do salad bowls (and their staff are pretty unhelpful too). In a major grump, I left the store to see what else was on offer on the street. Right next door I came across Mother Clucker. Firstly, they scored a point for having a name that made me snigger, secondly... They couldn't have been more helpful if they tried. After a quick peruse of the menu I opted for lemon and herb chicken (which is served without skin). I asked if I could have some salad with this, after looking at me strangely for a minute - the guy said "Sure, we can do that. It'll be no extra charge". Winner. The chicken was cooked fresh for me as I waited and I requested some lettuce, onion and chillies (all I could have). I was even warned that the salad might be a bit rubbish as it's predominently meant for burgers, but I thought it was sweet that they warned me. My diet friendly feast was a budget busting £3.50. The guys that did end up going to Subway ended up pretty jealous of my dinner after all. This new kid on the block is sparkling clean, very friendly and super helpful. Will I be back? You can bet your bottom dollar I will.

I am used to so many great burgers as such affordable prices (even cheap in some places) With that said, Five Guys is quite average. Even in the States, Five Guys is generally not on my radar as a quality burger place I would consider. The other thing that puts me off is the fact that it is so expensive. £15 for a burger, fries, and a drink! What a rip off. Paying a price like that, I would expect a gourmet hamburger that is plump and juicy, not skimping on the size and cooked to perfection. But alas, even though it comes with two patties, it's honestly not much bigger than a McDonald's double. But despite all this, there is something will probably keep me coming back here from time to time - it's the only thing that tastes like an American burger around here. I guess they have that going for them.

Roll back to October last year and I was in London with the Yelp guys figuring out what to eat. As you can imagine, London has attracted many of the American burger bar chains, so you're pretty spoiled for choice in the Cap City. On our last day in London, we decided to grab an unhealthy lunch to keep us fuelled on our trips home. On recommendation, we tried Shake Shack, but I had also wanted to try 5 Guys (having heard several of my colleagues raving about their wares). This is why I was pleasantly surprised to hear that we were getting our own branch of 5 Guys in Birmingham. Being based in the Bullring means I was a little wary about how busy it would be of a lunch time, but at around 12:30 (when I had scheduled lunch with Elite Yelper Libby D.) it was pretty empty. The building is pretty massive and filled with booth and table style seating. It's decorated in white and red and has a proper "taste of the States" feel to it. The playlist is pretty good too! Everything from The Verve to Foo Fighters with plenty of "Long distance American Driving Music" chucked in for good measure. After perusing the "not so big it's confusing, but lots of choice available" menu, I opted to go for a cheeseburger whilst Libby went for a hamburger. Now, the nice gimmick of Five Guys is that you can have as many of the free toppings as you like (which, to be honest, makes the £8 price tag for a cheeseburger a little more bearable). Of course, I had to go "All the way" and try a burger with ALL of the toppings. We also went for a side of fries (Cajun for me and Five Guys Fries for Lib) and a couple of refillable sodas. Once you have placed your order and paid, you join a second queue which looks into the kitchen. The production line style kitchen is a joy to watch! With about 8 fryers, huge burger grills and watching everything be constructed; it's pretty impressive. I could tell when mine was being made as it barely fit into the foil they package in! Every burger has 2 patties as standard and you can opt to go bunless if you want to avoid the additional carbs. We received our order within a couple of minutes of paying and grabbed a booth to enjoy our lunch. My burger was a treat! Loaded with gherkins, cheese, onions, mushrooms and the obligatory tomato and lettuce; it was a total beast. The fries were pretty good too, although a little salty for my liking and just thrown in the bag rather than being served in a receptacle. The soda machine is an experience in itself! All sodas are refillable and there are 127 different types of fizzy drink to choose from! I went for grape Fanta (which I had never seen before) and Libby opted for vanilla cherry Coke. There are also complimentary monkey nuts of offer (if you have the smallest amount of room after your ridiculous burger). I was definitely impressed. The price for mine and Libby's meals was £24, which was quite steep for burger, fries and soda, however I wasn't then hungry again until around 10pm. I would definitely recommend a visit if you have a hankering for unhealthy, but I don't think it will be -too- regular an experience for me.
