The Ski Monster is a great ski shop, located near North Station, the North End, the Boston Garden, and the old, Government Center Parking Garage. For 40 years, I have patronized ski shops in downtown Boston; I'm trying to remember them, by name, and I'm struggling; I remember most, The Ski Market, on Commonwealth Avenue at Boston University, my favorite! Then, there was a ski shop by the Old State House, I don't remember their name, and another ski shop, on Commonwealth Avenue, near the BU Campus, heading out to Allston/Brighton (Wilderness House, maybe?). I liked all of them, although, The Ski Market was my favorite. The Ski Monster is very good. The shop is nice, their hard and soft goods are good, the staff are friendly and knowledgable. The Ski Monster's "Appointment Only" policy, is a little quirky, and takes some getting used to. We've not used the Ski Monster for ski tuning, or boot fitting. We love the precision ski tuning that the Wintersteiger Jupiter machine produces at Aspen East Ski Shop, in Killington. That machine is hard to beat, our skis come out, looking (and skiing) like brand new. It's nice to have a ski shop in Downtown Boston. The Ski Monster has many attributes. It's just not the greatest of downtown Boston ski shops of yesteryear; nor for that matter, can The Ski Monster compete with the once greats of Scandinavian Ski Shop, and Streeter and Quarles Ski Shop, in Manhattan. Heard about this place from a coworker! I needed my skis tuned and a pair of snowboard boots. I had to call and make an appointment which was very simple to do. I was suprised when they asked for a credit card number for cancelations and even more suprised when I read the fine print and the cancelations fee was $200! Nonetheless, the staff when I arrive was very friendly and informative! I was able to get a pair of boots and my skis tuned very easily! I was able to get everything I needed very quickly! Just bought my first pair of ski boots from Ski Monster with help from Joe who's really professional and patient. I was first deterred by its appointment system where they ask for credit card. But after calling in I realized it's more of a safety deposit in case you didn't show up. Joe measured the foot size first, and all the boots he recommended based on the measurements fits perfectly. All the reviews complaining about the reservation process are so ridiculous- you can make it an hour before you come in and it takes 5 seconds. If anything it helps ensure theres a staff member available to help you with your specific needs. Anyway- I had a great experience here! Derik was awesome and really helpful with helping me pick out snowboarding boots. I'm indecisive and he was super patient with me. Didn't pressure me into anything I wasn't feeling. The store itself just feels very classy and has a great selection. I have really small feet and it's the only place that had more than 1 option available. I love this place! I made two different appointments for a custom boot fitting (btw it was very easy) and each time i was treated at the front reception with happy and kind people. Ryan (my boot fitter) met me and he was patient, listened about my foot problems and worked on my boots with expedience. I actually asked him to do my right boot a second time and he had no issue at all. He suggested i ski on them for a few days and if i still had an issue to come back. I did exactly that and returned to have my right boot worked on again and he was more than happy to help me out. I was having issues with my feet sliding around and heels lifting out of my fairly new boots. A friend recommended Ski Monster in Boston. I made an appointment with Joe, an excellent boot fitter there, and the communication and appointment reminders were stellar. There is a great vibe when you arrive in the Canal Street shop, with friendly folks and great tunes. Joe was a great listener when I described my issues. He took my boots downstairs, where he added foam in multiple strategic spots and had me on my way in under 30 minutes. I had a great day on the mountain as a result of his adjustments! I will return to Ski Monster if I ever have any boot issues and will definitely buy my next pair of boots here. read more

Definitely not the cheapest place around but so far I've had a great experience with them. The staff are super knowledgable about ski equipment and are willing to talk to you in details about how gear before you buy it. They aren't pushy and won't try to talk you into buying gear you don't need, but they aren't the cheapest. You pay a bit extra here for service and expertise, but it can be with it unless you know exactly what you want. One thing that I found was nice was when I finally decided on the skis I wanted, they helped me get them set up with bindings and got me out the door in 15 minutes. I had called a few other shops out in the suburbs that said their turnaround time was a week to install bindings on new skis and they were farther away too. You can't beat these guys for convenience, expertise, and speed and a generally great shopping experience. On the downside, you need to book an appointment in advance. You can't just walk in. Somebody told me they plan to stay appointment only, even after COVID. read more

Bought a pair of boots 2 years ago, skied them incredibly hard, had an issue come up over a trip last week, and brought them in for adjustments. Thirty minutes of trying on and a few gradual adjustments later, we had a solution to try out, and a promise that I can come back to try something else if it doesn't work. Fully expected to pay for labor but turns out they actually stand by the $500+ boot that they sell you for the entire lifetime of the product. Never going anywhere else for ski equipment, you're royalty here. read more

I made sure to book the appointment when there were no events at TD and I was able to find street parking right across the street (even during rush hour!) They know their products ice cold, have reasonable prices, and are passionate about their customers' experiences. People like Eric, Brady, and Joe always go above and beyond to make their sometimes-nervous (ME!) customers feel comfortable and to earn repeat business. On top of their retail shop (sweet place right in the city and near the Haymarket Orange Line and Green Line T stops), they have terrific services like waxing/tuning, etc. -- and are some of the nicest people you'll meet. Be warned. I was utterly disappointed with my experience at this ski shop. The rigid policy of requiring appointments just to try on coats felt completely unreasonable. A friend recommended The Ski Monster to me and I thought I would try it out. I went in on Friday night about 15 minutes before closing. There were a few associates helping people, but a few were not. Those that were not, simply walked around me completely avoiding eye contact. None offered to assist with a boot fitting or to find someone that could. Instead, I tried on floor models for 15 minutes, obviously not finding the correctly fit boot. I then left fairly disappointed by the poor customer service. I am still in the search for ski boots, but don't think I'll return. read more

I love my ski monster! I have been using this shop for a couple of years now. I have never had a bad experience. The sales people are awesome. They remember me and my issues; they actually care! It wasn't easy to get the right boots for my feet, but they worked with me tirelessly until it was right. The boots we got me in were SO much more comfortable and skied SO much better than my prior ones. And I love I that they are experts. They give solid advice, because they are all snow sports enthusiasts. I've been to a lot of shops over the years. The Ski Monster is the first and only shop that has held my attention and earned my trust. I can't imagine going anywhere else. Ski gear isn't cheap, so the buying experience definitely shouldn't be! The Ski Monster business model seems to recognize this and delivered beyond my expectations when buying ski boots recently. The appointment system creates a comfortable atmosphere in which I felt that my needs were fully assessed and I was provided personalized boot recommendations. Never did I get the sense that I was being lead toward a boot that they were trying to get rid of. I bought a pair of Lange SX 120 boots earlier this year in the Boston store. The boot-fitter recommended the Lange boots and fit the liners to my feet. I wasn't able to ski at all in the Spring, so I finally wore the boots this week out west. The boots nearly ruined my trip. The boots were uncomfortable from the get-go. It felt like my feet were being squeezed all over and the pain only abated when my feet went numb. I tried everything to improve the fit -- putting in new footbeds, punching out the shell, etc. I found myself wasting hours of perfect ski days in the shop, waiting for my boots to be serviced. Still, nothing made the boots comfortable enough. The boot fitter out in Utah joked that the Lange boots would have been the right fit -- if I were on the US National Team. He said he skis 100 days a year and would never have chosen such an aggressive fit for himself. Finally, I gave up on the boots, swapping them out for a pair of rentals that fit much better. I wish I could return the Lange boots and start over. Unfortunately, it's too late for that and I will probably have to ditch them and buy new boots on my next trip out west. The Ski Monster is otherwise a good store, with a great selection of helmets, goggles, socks, etc. I also bought a Smith helmet and a boot bag and I'm very happy with both. I'm sure I will return at some point to buy more ski accessories. But I'm definitely not going back for another boot fitting. read more

Appointment only to enter the store for fittings and tunings. $60 for a premium tune, hands down got my baby back almost like factory new. The Ski Monster had such a ritzy feel when I walked in. With red velvet rope barrier, you'd think you were trying to get into a club. Except this club is for ski and snowboard! Everyone was masked up. Hand sanitizer everywhere. Limited street parking, but if you don't mind walking, Haymarket parking garage is a stone throw away. read more

I haven't skied in 10 years, and brought my old pair of boots to Ski Monster tonight thinking that they didn't fit and ready to drop serious money on a new pair. The guy at the front offered to help me right away even though the store was really busy (he turned out to be one of the owners.) I put on the old boots that "didn't fit" and he talked me through how they should feel, determining that they DO fit and just need some adjusting to be comfortable because I have large calves. You can tell there are lot of expert skiers and snowboarders in the shop, and I felt kinda stupid being like "how should these fit?" and "how should I buckle these?" but he was patient and helpful. He made some adjustments to the boots and showed me how I could do that myself later on. I really appreciate that I wasn't sold something I didn't need, even when I walked in practically asking them to take my money. I'll be back whenever I need something ski-related. I know it may seem a bit strange or not normal to shop for ski equipment in one of the most expensive areas in New England(Downtown Boston), but trust me don't sleep on this place! Believe it or not, I find the equipment prices cheaper here than I do closer up north next to the mountains plus the service is just as knowledgeable and helpful! One huge perk I like about this place is the tuning of skis and boards. They do a great job plus the price is good. Canal St. can be a difficult spot to pick things up but as long as you call ahead you can pop in and out and you'll be all set quicker than anything else. read more

Could not recommend Ski Monster enough, major shout out to Dylan. I purchased my boots here not too long ago, and needed a small adjustment. When you buy your boots from Ski Monster, any and all work you need to be done to them is totally free of charge, which is great for anyone who's planning on being in Boston for a while. I told Dylan what the issue was, he immediately knew how to fix it, and it was quick and easy. The staff is all incredibly nice, and the appointment system works great, as the shop is never overcrowded, there's always a great atmosphere. You have to pay full retail price on anything you buy, but the service you get here makes it all worth it. Sexist, dismissive - thanks for nothing George Completely dismissed my concerns when I told him about my safety issues and how my entire leg was numb. I told him the bindings are extremely tight to the point that I can't get in even with my entire body weight on the ski. I can't push anymore than my entire body weight now can I???! He's like, no see? I did it with my hands it's fine. I told him when I fell pretty badly they didn't come off, that means they are too tight. I had to complain 3 times for him to say "okay let me see if I can loosen it a bit" Now? They work fine. I don't need to shred my ankle just to get into the skis. Then, I told him something is off with the right boot because when I tried the boots and skis out for the first time, I started falling randomly. Just like that, no movements, nothing. I would fall, and then again and then again. Now I'm no pro skier but I can confidently go down greens and blues. I think to myself wow this is weird because I can turn right but everytime I even start to turn left - I'm on the ground. I knew it was a control issue. Then after a few failed turns my leg goes numb, completely numb. I'm bold enough that I'd at least make it down the hill before calling it a day but I had to get a safety person rescue me because I felt paralyzed in my right leg. I tell all of this to George in great detail and his response? "You need to hold you poles at 90 degree" I'm like bruh my leg was NUMB. He looks at me blankly and says "have you thought of Taking a class?" I keep telling him look I know how to ski I'm not a pro but Ive skied enough to know that I had no control in my right leg. He keeps looking at me blankly and keep saying poles. Now I have nothing against classes. I love taking them and I'm a big fan of perfecting your technique before trying out black diamond and beyond. But the fact that he just completely dismissed all of my concern regarding the bindings and the boots made me so upset. So I think OK let me go back on the mountain and try again because I love skiing and hate to have had such a bad time. Again I felt I had no control. So I push myself and try a little by little. it felt like I was learning how to walk again. After a few turns I realize my right foot was numb again so I try loosening the buckles but the top buckle was already at it's loosest. Then I realized every other buckle feels except the top one. So the safety guy tells me to leave it open and tighten everything else on the right boot. Suddenly I can ski again. Just like I was able to last season and the season before that. My circulation and muscles were completely cut off because of that buckle. What made me so mad is that I could have known this at the shop but George wouldn't even bother taking a look. he didn't even have me try on the boot when I told him the boot does not feel good. imagine you go to the doctor and you say hey my arm hurts and he doesn't even take a look and says have you tried running??? TF???? The way that he looked at me as if I was just some dumb person who didn't know what I was doing and was completely being hysterical, when I knew I was facing a ton of danger with that boot. So now I just ski with that buckle open. of course it brings about a host of other issues but to get that fixed I will be going to a different shop and really warn all the women.I don't think the other staff members are bad because they seemed fine but George buddy, put the sexism away. read more

I needed a new pair of ski boots (replacing an old beat up race boot) and after reading all of Ski Monster's reviews I decided to do some online research and check it out. As an ex-racer I had an idea of what I wanted to try/buy, as well as a pretty good idea on how my ski boots are suppose to fit. Turns out all of the boots I thought I wanted to try or could be potentially interested in buying were not the greatest options for me at all haha. I worked with Dylan and he broke down each of the boots I had researched and then brought out some that he recommended based on all of my measurements... After trying a couple pairs on and listening to Dylan explain the pros and cons of each, I went with one of his recommendations over what I thought I was going to buy. I just got back from my first few days on my new boots and they couldn't of worked out any better! Thanks again Dylan and the rest of the ski monster crew for hooking it up... Also, really cool vibes in the store. I will say it was a little busy on the Saturday I was there so I had to wait a bit for service... but the overall experience was worth the wait. read more

Ski Monster has managed to create a shopping experience even worse than COVID-19. I walked there and the store was empty except for a few staff and maybe a customer hidden in the changing room. The person at the door told me she could get me an appointment for an hour later but I couldn't come in to buy a simple ski hat. Said they put this policy in place during COVID and things were much better now. There was at most one other customer in the huge store. I said: it may be better for you. If you need to be fitted for boots, it is worth driving to a ski area. I ended up going to southern Vermont and got fitted at Sure Foot. It's worth it as I had a great experience there and was able to find boots in my size. I now realize what a joke it was to try Ski Monster - they make you think they're knowledgeable and give you one on one service, but they do not have a wide selection and didn't do the extra steps that help with getting a proper fit. Don't waste your time in Boston, go to a ski area that has shops that have expertise. read more

I highly recommend the bootfitting services here. I've outgrown my old boots and started racing recently hence I needed a boot with a stiffer flex. Eric, my bootfitter took time to explain the shell sizes, boot last and steered me towards an awesome pair of Lange RX 110s that were on sale instead of selling me the most expensive boots. They were 50% off because they're from last season. I ended up picking up a pair of new skis with upgraded Tyrolia bindings and he gave me a really great discount on accessories due to the ski purchase. The prices here are reasonable considering its location in Govt Center and I was able to find parking all 3 times I went there. The staff here is knowledgable, friendly and passionate about skiing. Overall the process took 90 minutes George had me try on four different types of boots and politely and thoroughly explained to me the pros and cons and technology behind the boots. this also included in 15 minutes of custom heat treating and 16 ounce beer to drink while I waited for the mold to conform to my foot. He also adjusted the DIN numbers of my skis and reminded me that i was shopping on a tax free holiday. At no point in the process did I feel like I was being oversold or pushed to make any quick decisions however the entire process was efficient and straightforward I could not be more satisfied with my experience at ski monster today read more

I've been a loyal customer, along with my whole family for the past few years, but latest experience was just simply ridiculous and believe me I am not going back. I needed a pair of gloves for the weekend, and as always stopped at Ski Monster after work - to be told that it is by appointment only. Now, I truly support protecting both their staff and customers in COVID times, and maybe limiting how many folks is in store at time, however there wasn't a single soul in the store! I get it if you want to have folks make appointments for boot fitting/shopping or ski tuning/shipping etc., perhaps for a personal shopper experience, but I can't even make an appointment just to buy a pair of gloves. Not to mention that they require a credit card to make the appointment and if you miss it, you are charged $200. Absolutely ridiculous! I have to be stressed if I will miss a train or get stuck in traffic, or have a bit longer meeting at work, miss an appointment and get charged $200 fee. Get a grip guys. read more
